So i was looking at the xda wiki for our device and noticed that in the specs that there's an FM tuner in our device but its disabled within the firmware. my 1st question is, is it true we have an FM tuner? and my second question is, if we do truly have an FM tuner that is disabled within the firmware, is there a way we can enable it so we can use it? i mean, if there is a way to enable it, why not use all the features that our phone has?
I think that the chip would have to be connected to the headphone jack so that when you connect your headphones they act as an aerial antenna. At least thats how my old hd2 worked. Im thimking that they left it disabled because they left out that connection. I wish I could say for sure but I'm not opening up my phone to check!

Here's a tear down of our device. Looks like the chip that does wifi & bluetooth is also a tuner:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-S-4G-Teardown/4977/2
We know the chip is there but if it doesn't connect to the headset jack its useless even with the correct firmware/driver. Imagine your car radio without an antenna... It just wont work. If the connection is there then it could work but just cause you have a fm chip doesnt automatically mean you can tune in. hope this helps.

a simple "no, it can't be done," would have been sufficient. thanks for the info though. just thought it could be enabled through code or something. guess not though. thanks anyway.

Actually, I was the one who updated that info on the wiki.
The fm chip is on our phone but it is 'disabled in firmware'. My question... hopefully answered soon... is it disabled in the broadcom firmware or in the bootloader (which initializes all of the hardware... like the bios on a pc... before it hands off to the kernel).

so if bryan is saying that bios is bootloaders for our device and raver is saying that it is definitely bios related, does that mean we can enable it somehow? sorry for being a pest about this, but I'm not a dev here otherwise I would do this myself (with a little help of course).

I'm working on u-boot in the background. It's lower priority on my list to the kernel and cm7, but it's on the list. When I get there, I definitely want FM support for our phone, and will do my best to make it work.

Out of all the questions I get, your question is a good one.
The thing is, not all dumb questions are dumb questions. They just may seem dumb to the person asking.

its posable to re enable it in there but it still will not work the physcial connection to the transmiter and the headphone / antennia jack would still need to be birdged.

What about the FM transmitter function of the BCM4329 chip? That sounds like a source for a lot more fun than just having the phone act like a cheap transistor radio.

It is also possible that what they mean by "disabled in the firmware" is the firmware that is loaded for the bcm4329 chip.
we load fw_bcm4329.hcd and a few other 'firmware' binaries. Its possible that these are the firmware fm is disabled in.

I got the phone last night...there is no FM tuner on it.
I am trying to find one similar to the one on the darkstone froyo build for the HD2...
I don't know if T-Mobile changed it, or if I am remembering wrong, but I am pretty sure the T-Mobile G2x features page used to list an FM radio, but it sure isn't there now. I remember being very excited about it because I use the FM radio on my Nexus all the time. This may be a deal breaker for me. Hopefully the dev community can get it working.
Also seems odd for them to not enable FM radio for this phone when the O2x has it and the Optimus T also has one.

I needed to use LauncherPro to find the activity. Just be careful, there is items that will completely up your phone in this menu and we don't have an nv-flash backup yet.
Try using the APK from the LG O2x. It should work, because the G2x firmware contains most of, if not all of the same framework the O2x features.

From what I've read the radios in the O2x and G2x are a bit different, so the FM capability could be different.
I think the Nexus One was also capable of Wireless N and FM radio, but neither of those were ever enabled.

Didnt work, tried it.
Realistically, if we're assuming that the radio is included in the hardware, but removed software-wise, then we should probably start with determining if we even have a driver for it or not. I don't have my phone yet, so can't help.
In all official listings before release FM radio was in the specs list. I hope they only remooved software.

This seems to be the similar problem that we had with Samsung Vibrant. Unfortunetly there was a hardware missing on Vibrant, but hoping it is not the case for G2x. Hopefully kernel fix and drivers, along with the apk from o2x would fix it.(fingers crossed)
And you all thought it wasn't gonna happen... ;-)
Stay tuned, Alpha release within 24 hours.
Samsung Epic 4G [SPH-D700] GRI22 Android 2.3.4 (Sprint Nexus S 4G Port)
VOIP / SIP / GTalk / Google Voice - Outbound and inbound internet calling
PROJECT FOCUS:
1. Deep integration between carrier(Sprint) and Google Voice for free voice calling, without using any of your mobile device's minutes with IP & VOIP integration to GV. Outbound & Inbound calls purely through Google Voice / GTalk using IP or SIP protocol. Also unlimited video calling, SMS, chat, etc...
2. Extend device beyond manufacturer & carrier's service level agreement, allowing the Samsung Epic to be a top player for time to come
3. Provide a base AOSP platform for CDMA Galaxy S & Future Samsung mobile devices
4. Give me another challenge I guess?
5. Give users the ability to flash directly to the boot, sbl, kernel, recovery, cache, and data partitions without odin or heimdall using flash_image and .IMG files instead of .bin, and finally be able to choose more than one file system during flashing, from within a recovery or android itself.
6. SECRET (Soon to be announced)
I want this to be more of a community effort, being that the development for the Epic is seriously lacking, well development. So please, I encourage suggestions and constructive criticism, keep the moronic stuff to a bare minimum if possible.
You don't like it, or have an issue? I don't care. I don't want to hear about it either. Get bent, and go install another theme and call yourself a dev.
First. No 3g?

Sarcasm not needed. Please please please please please don't ruin this for us with unneeded comments like that. I swear to god I'll shut down your internet connection.
The screen on question, was in fact, not related to the OP as it wasn't stated as an objective. And I don't care how it was worded, question or not, it was a request, plain and simple. This isn't a space for wondering about features. Its for discussion and discovery as directly related to the OPs objectives. Its what the old XDA used to be, from the archives that I've read.

everyone says it's "not connected", what if someone actually CONNECTED it?
What i mean is.. there's people out there who mod circuitry, and make thigns, like those arduino modules.
would it be possible for someone to soder/wire some connections to this radio chip so that it got power from the system, and worked?
for instance, the "wind" one seems to have SOMETHING working..
would it be possible for one to get it working themselves, and then have the system use it?
Am fm radio apk
I recently bought the oem Samsung infuse car dock. The dock is suppose to automatically switch the phone into car mode once the app is downloaded. Well it doesn't do this. I am currently rooted on stock Rom 2.3.5. I understand this function is built into the stock Rom for the skyrocket and may be built into a different build. What I am looking for is automatic switching to car mode once inserted into dock and audio out via the charging port. I know there is a Rom out there that supports the car dock. And I'm ready to flash it. Does anyone have any idea of a Rom that supports the car dock functions?

Its not necessarily a "ROM" that makes the car dock "work" . Yes there is an option to set audio out in the dock settings for samsung stock roms(though it has yet to be functional). I use the dock in conjunction with google car home(when i insert the phone into the dock it automatically sets it in car mode and you can customize what apps you want on it), one of the threads has info on it so search my friend.
Entropy512(Elite Recognized Developer for Infuse 4g) provides some insight into the dock
Entropy512 said:
In the case of Infuse and other devices which have proper dock support, the dock is specifically detected by the device based on the value of the resistor between the ID pin and ground. The state of USB pins 2 and 3 don't matter as these aren't even routed to the device - those pins get routed by the dock to the audio output jack, and the device routes audio to those pins when the ID resistor indicates a dock is present.
In this case the Skyrocket appears not to be handling dock presence at all.

which rom your using? lots of ics rom has wifi tether issues.
cm9 and aokp is okay,
I don't answer not becuz I dislike you.....but more becuz I don't tether,so I'm of no use for an answer on this subject.
As far as having alot of enemies...lol I think I've got ya beat there....
I used WiFi tether on CM9 with no problem at all. My usual Internet connection was down, and I used tethering as a backup. It took a bit more time to connect to the phone than to the router, but it connected in under a minute and worked just fine.

Lol I was taught that there are 3 types of people in this world....
1-that are suck ups.
2-those who like being sucked up to.
3-those like me that can't stand either one.
Im not supposed to wifi tether my device according to my new no cap contract so if that's important to you make sure you are aware of that when it comes time to renew or upgrade
I wouldn't say you guys are hated and or have alot of enemies.
Your merely misunderstood, and it doesn't help when there are the few with forked tongues that twist and manipulate what you say.
I see you two have some valid issues most of the time, but its hard to make your points when you are dealing with a mass amount of people that aren't educated enough to see them.

I'm having trouble using Wifi tether. When ever I try to connect I get an error that says "WTF!! Your phone is automatically shutting off the connection" lol it was pretty funny first time I saw it. The wifi tether signal still shows up on the devices I connect to but they don't register it. Is there any work around or fix? I used the roms codename and beam for this btw.

Going back to gb solved the prob for me oh how i missed this battery life. (btw bh the best guide to go back to gb from ics is fbs old kd1 guide using odin. Super easy and takes just a few mins. It has been the difinitive unbrick guide for me too. In my opinion one click has a high learning curve! You should point people to the link on your one click post as an alternative)

Gremlin remover is a great one-click back to rooted stock aswell
No learning curve .....just dl it and click it,nothing else needed

All you need to do is right click and select open with java.

yea but before that you need to set up command prompts and downloading a jig file program with it and some other stuff. with odin there's no need to use command prompts, you just download the tar pit and csc files and flash away. Practically unbrickable even if you take the usb during an odin transfer. I'm not saying one click doesn't work but I think it throws people off

wut?
You are confusing installing heimdall fully instead of using a one click. Only thing you need for a one click is java and to install the drivers. Nothing hard at all.

lol I think you're right..let me rephrase then. I view Odin just another option to root, flash, and unbrick your device. Why not include it as an option, I don't think it's obsolete just yet.
i see we r making headway here.
How much stuff do ya really need on your comp other than a simple one click odin program that will do what's needed without having to go look up another and so on just to get rooted stock....I've had issues with installing Java...my comp doesn't seem to like it or I don't seem to know what I'm doing with it....either way gremlin remover is one simple easy dl and 1 simple click that takes less than about 3 minutes to do whats needed
