Hey guys, my first thread here.
I owned Xoom for a while, when I updated it to 3.2 a while back I ran into an issue with Bluetooth tethering. I could tether fine to my Droid X but once I disconnect I would not be able to connect again until Xoom is restarted. Some of you Im sure know what I'm talking about.
So now I finally got ISC on my Xoom, everything is working great but the Bluetooth tether issue remains. It was a real disappointment as I was hoping Google will get their heads out of you know what and fix it. Is there a solution???
Here is a link to an issue posted on Google code page: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=18835
This is an old thread from xda: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174658&page=3
Thanks
I have ovta ics cant get any kind of tethering working. Damn u Motorola.
My Bluetooth tethering is working fine. I used to have to reset my Xoom every time if I disconnected on honeycomb but now I don't have to.
I'm using an Xperia play rooted with wireless tether for root app using the Bluetooth tether option in the app. I start that app and I'm able to connect, disconnect then reconnect my Xoom via Bluetooth at will now.

just tried connecting and disconnecting several times and still working. Typing this from my Xoom after trying it.
Are you rooted and using the wireless tether for root app? I don't know why it didn't work for me with honeycomb before using this same setup but it works now so I'm not going to complain.

I am not rooted and not using any app. My Droid x2 is rooted and I can use wifi tether app no problem. I like to have an option of using Bluetooth tether because the phone battery life and tempreture stay under control. When I was using honeycomb 3.0 and 3.1 there was no problem but with the release of 3.2 it was broken. Now the ICS is out and the problem is not fixed. WTF Google?

My Xoom is not rooted, but my Xperia play is rooted. I'm using wireless tether for root version 2.0.7 using the Bluetooth tether feature of it. My Xoom is stock ice cream sandwich, unrooted and now with ice cream sandwich on my Xoom, I'm able to Bluetooth tether without having to restart my Xoom each time like with honeycomb 3.2.1.

Thanks the_other_ray, I tried your method and it worked. I was also able to get it to work without the use of a third party app. All I had to do is to turn the wifi radio off and NOT put the Xoom into the airplane mode. If the airplane mode is on it will connect once but won't connect again. Leave it off and it connect every time like a charm. I guess I own someone an apology Sorry Google.
P.S. I ran a speed test and got 1.5 mbs down while Bluetooth tethered to my verizon 3g Droid x 2. Not too bad.

Nice, glad it worked out for you.
I didn't even think about the airplane mode needing to be off since I never turn the airplane mode on so I didn't realize that caused an issue. That's a good find.
1.5mb is about what I get which is good for streaming Netflix without constant buffering. Once I get a 4g phone, it's going to be game on!

Is your airplane mode turned off on your Xoom?
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
Wifi off, airplane mode off. Bluetooth on, pair both, then on the xoom select atrix and click on the settings icon to the right of it. Its no longer a wrench, instead it looks like settings button. That will take you to the next menu where you select use for internet access. Once the Bluetooth icon by the clock turns blue you are good to go. Hope that helps.
still nothing. while in settings it only says rename or unpair.
this is super frustrating. this is not what i signed up for. the point of a tablet is efficiency. this isnt efficient. why do we have to buy things and THEN find out certain perks dont work??
are we supposed to buy EVERYTHING, compare and then return what we dont want....that is so counterintuitive.

Hi,
I have the wifi-only XOOM (nonrooted) and a rooted HTC EVO. I can pair and connect each device with another blue-tooth device, so I know that both have blue-tooth working.
I can't get the Xoom and EVO to connect via blue-tooth. It says "paired but not connected" and when I try to click on it to connect it, nothing will happen (on other items it will search...then connect). The only options available to me are rename device and unpair.
I've rebooted, nothing works. I've tried the instructions for tethering, and just trying to get the blue-tooth connection to work.
1. Has anyone successfully paired the wifi only xoom with the evo?
2. Any ideas or suggestions for me?
Thanks. This is really frustrating because the tethering is the reason I bought the wifi only xoom.
Edit: I thought I typed this, but it is not showing. Somewhere on XDA are the instructions for wireless tethering, (sorry don't have link handy) and I have followed them. Doesn't work.
I rooted my EVO with CM7 and the Hotspot software came pre-installed. I just tether to my xoom with that, no problems. It's pretty fast on 3G.

My EVO has Myn’s Warm TwoPointTwo - [RLS 5 - 01/07/2011] which has the wireless tether built in. Is your xoom rooted or non? Mine is not.
yeah, it would be great if someone could figure out how to tether via bluetooth with an EVO to the Xoom; my wife has a non rooted evo, and a wifi only xoom, and wishes she could tether..
My rooted EVO does wifi tether easily to the xoom, but, it wont tether via bluetooth either; it shows "paired", but never connected..
Anyone figured this out yet?
thanks
same here. I have rooted Evo with vaelpak 3.2 on it and the wifi tether app works great but I can't get Bluetooth to tether at all. I hear that is a faster connection so I want to try it but the is no option to tether after clicking the wrench

I have the same problem running a rooted evo with MYN 2.2 RLS5. Paired but not connected is the only thing I can get. I download the newest wireless tether app and could not get it to work.
I can can tether using Wireless tether using an open connection but when I try to encrypt I cannot get it to work. I sure would like a fix before my trial runs out on the xoom.

I do not have an EVO, I have a droid OG , but ran into a similar problem. I made a video on the subject. I apologize if this does not work for you but try it out. I recommend unpairing your devices first and start where the video starts. I had to unpair to get mine working. Since your rooted it shouldn't be a problem and take a minute to try it out.

if your phone is rooted, its super easy to tether via wifi; hundreds of posts all over this board and the internet about it.
its tethering via bluetooth that doesnt seem to work on an evo..

Thanks, I find all of the tether wifi posts, and I can do that. I thought I had seen that some evo users were able to tether by bluetooth, but maybe not. Maybe when the sd card slot patch comes out it will fix it.
Hi All...
So after much wait, I decided to jump on the Tablet band wagon.
I opted to get a WiFi only tablet as I had all intentions to Tether my Evo (Rooted).
I am now aware of the Ad-Hoc WiFi issue with the Xoom after doing some research and all i can say is W T F!?.
Is there ANYWAY to get this thing to connect to my WiFi Tether Evo ?
I've downloaded the experimental 3.0 WiFi Tether app from Google code...The Xoom now picks up AndroidTether..but will not connect. Stuck at "Obtaining IP Address"...
I'm close to returning this thing...I was going to wait for the Acer Iconia to drop in a few weeks but got impatient...I might stick to the original plan...
Any Ideas ?
Does the Xoom need to be rooted to get it to connect?
WHATS THE DEAL WITH THIS?!
Thanks.
I don't have any issues tethering my wifi only zoom to my evo. I am using the hacked sprint hotspot app that comes in Calkulin's Evio2 rom. I think you can download just the hotspot app and install it on any deodexed rom.
Here is the link:

I'm running CM7 on my evo, and I use the built in wifi hotspot on that. I dont think the Evo hacks can tether 4g, but the 3g tether is great. Browsing speeds are fast and reliable, but I wouldnt use it for youtube or anything like that.
The Sprint HotSpot app doesnt tether 4G, right? Or does it?
I'm on CM7 RC4.

I havent even had a chance to enjoy the Xoom..what a headache.
Bluetooth tether doesn't work on the evo. I just use the hotspot built into CM7 on mine, never had an issue with it. 4g works too.

I literally JUST fixed my problem...
Just flashed over to a Sense rom from CM7 RC4..
The Normal WiFi Tether app (non-experimental) works just fine.
I'd love to stay on CM7....
if it werent for the quick tether i'd be on MikZ i think. It's stupid ammounts of fast and HTC has some of the best apps IMO
I had this exact problem last week. Neither the latest version of Tether, or the Experimental 3.0 worked.
I finally installed one of the fixed Vaelpak versions and it worked great. Let me know if you need the file and I can get it to you.

My rooted Evo running myn 2.2 RLS 5 works fine running unencrypted using wireless tether and 3g or 4g. A no go with bluetooth.
Encrypted tether is a no go also.
I am running Sprint Lovers ROM on my EVO and have no issues with tethering the Xoom. I have done it with both the modded Sprint Hotspot app and the WiFi Tether app.
Will the WIFI Tether work with a temporary root ?
Hi All,
I have a Rooted Droid Charge and I have the old Wireless Tether app on my phone. Can I "tether" my Motorola Xoom Tablet off of it? or is Verizon gonna know that I am doing that and charge me for it or cut my unlimited plan?
I hear people saying yes...they could find out and also no they can never find out...wondering if someone knows for sure
Thanks in advance
They definitely CAN find out, whether they will do anything about it or not is another question.
I use the free wireless tether to tether my ipad2 occasionally but I make sure not to overuse it like some posters do & I've never had a problem.

Hey man, I work for Verizon and I use the wireless tether free too. Theres been times ive hit high amounts of data and I never had an issue with Verizon. I use it everyday, including at my job because we have ****ty AT&T internet. My rep has told me they have ways to monitor 3G tethering but not 4G yet; as far as throttling goes. Anyways, if you want to use your tether to connect your xoom this is how you do it.
1. Download this app and install it. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta6.apk&can=2&q=
2. Open the app up, DONT DO ANYTHING YET.
3. Hit menu, go to settings.
4. Change the device profile to Fascinate.
5.Change setup type to the one that says Master.
6. Reboot your phone.
Now any device will pick up your hotspot. Keep in mind once you activate the tether you cant deactivate it and reactivate it unless you reboot! Itll just hang on you. So once your done using it, reboot your phone.
actually, use 3.0. its older but supports 4g and you dont have to reboot your phone every time. 3.1 disconnects randomly and you need to reboot every time you want to reuse it. just started using 3.0 and havent had the same issues. there was a thread i found that talked about this but i cant find it atm. if i find it ill post link for you.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...l?name=wifi_tether_v3_0-pre12.apk&can=4&q=3.0
edit - read this thread. this is where i got the idea to try 3.0 instead of 3.1. 3.0 seams to be working much better and I dont have to constantly force stop the app and reboot to get it to work every time.

3.1 supports my 4G though? Thanks though!
yes both 3.0 and 3.1 support 4g. Its just that 3.0 is less buggier. 3.1 will randomly boot you off the network and like you previously stated. you must reboot the phone every time or the app just hangs. 3.0 does have thous issues. it has yet to randomly boot me off. Nor do i need to reboot the phone after every use. i can just toggle app off and on and it works every time. no reboot needed. ive tested using both pc and xbox 360 and in my honest option 3.0 just works a lot better then 3.1. But by all means if you prefer 3.1 to 3.0 thats completely fine. its your phone. I was just trying to help possibly showing yall a easier way(no random disconnects and not having to reboot after every use).
As far as Verizon knowing if you tether or not. I dont know if they can track but i know ive never been charged for tethering and have done it for over a year now.
Verizon knows, however if you're not using ridiculous amounts of data they usually leave you alone.

Great Work
Hello:
Thanks all the developers for your wonderful work. Installed the latest cm7 20120506 on XT720 and it feels completely different and much better phone now.
Everything seems to be working fine except I am not able to get wifi tethering working on this phone. I do not know if it is my phone only or is general problem.
I did some extensive reading for tethering and it was mentioned that it should run in infrastructure mode. or putting "dun" in apn etc. I even tried wifi tether app also. On this phone, I did not see two options "MSS clamping" and "Routing Fix" which seems to be critical.
As a last resort I tried bluetooth tethering and this seems to be working. I did the following
1: Install PdaNet 3.5 and FoxFi on XT720 for bluetooth tethering.
2. iPad: Pairing and connecting with XT720 immediately started working.
3. Galaxy s2: Installed Pdanet Tablet and connected to XT70:
I would appreciate your comments on getting wifi tethering to work with CM7 7.0 version
Once agains thanks to the developers.

Has anyone gotten wifi tether to work on fp5? On 3.1 pre 12 (the one that worked perfectly before) my computer can see the network but it says limited access when I try to use it. On the latest one in the play store my computer can't even see the network and on the phone it says "tethering started with issues" in a toast notification.
So far I haven't had any problems with FoxFi. Computer picks it up and connects automatically.
Tweaked out on Circuitry
Had a hot boot when I turned it off but it worked fine
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
So far I found that tethering is nearly worthless on FP5. FoxFi won't allow me to connect the computer. Wifi tether will hot reboot when stopping sometimes. It will also actually spit errors and basically bork the wifi driver when restarting-- reboot required to fix it. Additionally, when it does "work", data stops periodically (likely sleep state issue-- which is probably a kernel issue) and only resumes when the turn the screen on. I thought about trying to find an app that prevents the phone from sleeping. This happens on the beta2-2 as well as pre12.
My nerd-rage got the best of me and I loaded up Froyo. No problems there. I have a CWM of Gummycharged Froyo and Tweaked3.0 and Tweaked 2.0, so far no issues restoring.
Tweaked 2.0 gave me the same issues as Tweaked 3.0.
I am using FP5 radios on Froyo with no tether issues.
This is absolutely not knocking on how great Tweaked is, it's just that something is preventing proper wifi tether.
Do you have disable wakelock unchecked?
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
I installed and tried out FoxFi. It works and it shuts down ok. The weird thing is I now have the native mobile hotspot icon in my status bar and in the notification pulldown. If I tap it in pulldown it takes me to Mobile Hotspot settings and there it shows itself to be shut off. Is there a process still turned on that I don't know about? I turned off FoxFi in Task Manager and tried to find Mobile Hotspot in Running Processes and Titanium. I found nothing by that name. Maybe there's another name for it.
I'm about to try rebooting the phone but I was hoping to find a way to shut this off without it.
Update: Rebooting does shut it off. Is there something I could freeze in Titanium to keep this from happening again?
Update 2: Looking through Titanium there are 2 Wi-Fi Access Points. One is labeled 101 and the other is XML. Might one or both of these be the culprit? Can I freeze one or both of them?
Ok Titanium won't freeze either of them.
Update 3: I think I know what I did wrong. I think I switched the computer to another connection without turning off FoxFi first. So it appears to work good for me. I don't think FP5 causes the issue we're talking about here.
I've used PDANet for a wired connection too. It works great. The problem there is they won't let you use it for secure sights without paying for it. They want $15.95. I'm not willing to pay that much for it.

It sounds to me like you are trying to mix and match kernels and roms. If you want your phone to work right you need to be on FP5 straight across the board. FP5 stock absolutely smokes everything that came before. Even FP1 PB&J on Ext4 is a dog compared to it. Then you run Tweaked 3.0 on top of that and you have a smooth, problem free phone. At least I do.

Disable wakelock seems to keep the display on, and I don't want to burn out the screen. That does keep the connection mostly stable, but I still have issues with hot reboots and not being able to start and stop the and restart the service properly.
In Froyo (and EP4D, I believe) wakelock can be disabled and tether works flawlessly.
Another issue I noticed is that on FP1 and FP5, uploads on the phone work fine, but uploads over tether will pretty much kill the connection until enough time is given without uploading data.

I noticed that mobile hotspot icon as well with FoxFi, but I never could get data through, even though I was connected to WiFi. I haven't had issues with PDANet, but yeah it costs money, and it is lame to be wired.
My issue with the Mobile Hotspot icon was that it stayed on after I'd shut off FoxFi. It didn't stay on as long as I shut down Foxfi before I switched my computer to another connection. The first time I switched it then shut down FoxFi after and the icon got stuck on. It went away with a reboot. FoxFi worked great for me. I even got 13MBps download speeds through it according to Speakeasy.
Actually I don't think of a wired connection as lame at all. If there's a choice between wired and wireless I'll choose a wire every time. It's secure. I almost lost my bank numbers to a thieving internet asshole once and now I'm very careful.

I've tried the most recent two PBJ kernel with Tweaked 2.0 and the stock FP5 kernel with Tweaked 3.0. Same thing. As I recall, Imoseyon 4.0 kernel works on EP4D with tether just fine. I've had better luck with Froyo though, but that is anecdotal evidence. I've noticed improvements with each newer baseband version no matter what ROM/kernel I'm on. I am nearly certain that baseband is free of dependencies of ROM/kernel.

Wireless is the way to go for me, then I can place the phone for optimal reception. With access control and WPA2 of Wifi tether, I don't see how anyone would be able to join your network. If you connect to some random wifi network, then you'll want to be cautious that someone isn't arp spoofing or packet sniffing.
I haven't seen an app that beats wifi tether, the customization is much better than anything else I've tried. I know there is a problem with FP5 base or the FP5 kernel with wifi tether. I just don't have the knowledge to troubleshoot it.
Thanks for the heads up on this. Runs perfect on my stock ROM.
