You need stock recovery to install software updates. Are you using a custom one?

When you rooted your phone most surely you installed a custom recovery (clockwork maybe). Read this guide for getting back to stock recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16862231

Can't find my current software version 1.45.707.1 under HTC Sensation in Android Recovery Manager... I guess, I'll have to wait until Android ICS update comes to HTC Sensation.

That won't help, you'll need the stock recovery to install that update as well.

Then what would be the solution?
I did Factory Reset the phone once and even after that, update didn't install. The phone was surely unrooted then. I explained this to HTC and they said that now i should wait for the ICS or i could bring the device to their lab, which i couldn't.

after rooting you should have flashed any custom recovery.please check your recovery . log to hboot and select recovery. i thing you got cwm or some other recovery. you want get your stick recivery after a factory reset.because factory resetiing mean deleting your data in your phone.
i am on the cwm recovery.i got the same update (14mb) and i tried once.it stucked in a window displaying a phone+exclamation mark(something like that)
anyhow, did htc tell you ics releasing date??

[Q] i9020A updating to 2.3.6

I really hate to do this, but i've searched for a while now and can't seem to find anything that matches my situation.
i'm on stock 2.3.4, but rooted with a different kernel, boot image, and a different radio flashed. I realize that i'm not going to be able to install the update directly from my phone, but I can't seem to install the signed update file through cwm or the stock recovery I just flashed. cwm fails with a status 7 error, and stock recovery won't even let me bring up the menu to manually install the update.
i'm just wondering if I should flash a stock rom with recovery and then try to flash the update that way, or is there some other way that I could do it? I don't want to lose any data from my phone, and I would flash the full 2.3.6 rom instead, but I can't connect to the download link in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664.
once again, I really hate to do this, but I am pretty much stuck right now.
thanks

[Q] Quick update question

i have rooted my phone and installed various roms via rom manager but am now using the stock xe room from my backup.
I want to be able to get the ota update but will i still get it while my phone is rooted etc?
my device says ***locked*** and 's' off
does this matter?
is there anyway to completley wipe the device and start all over again so it would be as if when i first got it so as to enable the new update.
thanks for the help.

Install the latest RUU for your device then you will be back to stock.
S-off will remain but this doesn't matter as it will not prevent you from recieving stock ota updates.
Thanks for the reply,
It now seems that somehow I have installed another Rom that I had previously downloaded from Rom manager and when I now try to find my back up of my original sensation xe UK sim free back up I can't find it anywhere.
Can anyone post me a link to the original xe firmware that I can download and then install from recovery and then I can get the offical ics update.
Thanks.

CWM & TWRP cannot access anything in recovery.

Hi all,
just bought HTC Butterfly X920D 3 days ago from a guy. I realise he has root this device bcos I cannot do OTA update. System check download the update but failed to install. After that I search for a fix n found CWM & Rom manager. I flashed recovery & try to apply the update manually buy CWM says E:Cant mount sdcard, can access cache, blocking device required. Then I look for another fix and arrived here. After all that mess, I tried to factory reset the device via setting in phone is but after resetting n restarts, my HTC is entering recovery again and I opted from the menu selected "boot systems now". It booted andall the contents is still there!
Looks like the reset function isn't working anymore. Any suggestions on what I shud do?
Thx on advance. Cheers
you have to install the original recovery before applying the OTA.
I have it here
Flash it via bootloader

Update: I send my HTC to a repair shop & pay them to do factory reset & unroot. Now I pickup the device & it has been unroot and stock roms again. The problem is it still cannot OTA update also.. I thought after return the phone to standard unroot & factory reset it will be able to receive update. No luck here.. any advise?
Waste MYR60 for this. That's about 20usd. Demmm

New m8 wants to update

I just got my m8 and want to s-off but I'm traveling and won't be able to figure that out until I'm back on my pc next week. The update keeps prompting me to take it. Is it safe to do so? Sorry if this was already answered trying to figure out the best way to browse with tapatalk.
I don't have root or anything yet...

I used Firewater's method for permanent root, s-off and custom recovery. If I allow my phone to update will I mess things up or lose root?
Same boat here... s-off, permanent root, TWRP
The update to 1.55 downloaded but when I tried to let it install it just rebooted my phone into TWRP and that was it. Rebooted back to system and I'm still on the 1.12.605.11 software. Checking software update status shows "Result: Update Failed,410"
N00bs. Lol. You need a stock recovery to flash an OTA. Also, I am s-off and I had a flashback to a stock recovery to flash the OTA . Everything is still fine and then I flashed back to a custom recovery no problem

Totally a noob here, How do you flash to a stock recovery?
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
You guys need the stock recovery in order to install the OTA. It won't work with a custom recovery, it'll just boot to the custom recovery and not do anything. You can install the OTA with s off and root but you still need the stock recovery. You install the stock recovery the same way as you did the custom. Adb -> flashboot flash recovery *path of recovery*.

You can install the update, and when you have the chance you can s-off using the weaksauce/supersu/firewater method. I picked up a new M8 a couple nights ago and took the update, and afterwards did the temproot/firewater method and it worked just fine. Hope this helps.
I flashed stock recovery and tried the OTA and it failed twice. I can't seem to get it on my phone through any of the methods for some reason.
In order to install update, you need to have STOCK recovery and STOCK Rom....NOT debloated or with mods....STOCK.
Again, you need STOCK recovery using a STOCK Rom.
If you have modified the system in anyway, it WONT work until you put it back to STOCK.

No need to take ota. Ota us our enemy. Lol. The ota has been pulled an you can simply flash the firmware an that's half of the ota an then flash a stock Rom based off 1.55 or install the backup that was posted of a pure stock 1.55 Rom. After those 2 things you will have the full ota. New radios everything.. flashing a stock recovery taking ota flashing back is not needed.

Thanks guys it was annoying having that update keep popping up and no real computer to lookup info or soff. As for getting updates after roming the phone usually just wait for authors to incorporate the updates. But I did not realize you can't have two recoveries like you can on Motorola phones which is good to know.

New to android here.
I rooted the device with WeakSauce and use Firewater for S-Off. I didn't flash any custom recoveries. I did freeze some apps with Titanium Backup. If I do the OTA, 1) will it work? and 2) will it remove my root and/or s-off?

I don't remember ever having to have stock recovery and stock rom for my old DNA to take an update. Normally devs would update their rom with the updates and all we had to do was fastboot flash the new radio.
