TF101 as a citrix thin client - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have gotten a TF101 to test it out as a supplementary mobile client.
We are running Citrix and I have a desktop published throug Citrix Receiver. I have found keyboard and mouse that works with this wonderful machine but I want to have an external display also.
But I find the HDMI support quite bad. The content fills more than the TV Screen and I cannot change the screen resolution. I would like to have a larger screen resolution on the external display but cannot find any way to do this.
I have a LG Optimus 3D phone and on that I can adjust a lot of options on the HDMI port so it should be possible.
One snag: I am testing out this to be used in large scale for hundreds and eventually thousands of users so this needs to be working on completely stock operating system.

Maybe the Asus HDMI to VGA Adaptor is something to think about?

Ok. I got this one and it almost fills my need. I need to get a higher screen resolution on the external display. 1280x720 is way to small for a permanent workstation. At least with the tools I use.
Maybe I just have to wait for ICS to get this working?

Are you trying HDMI on a TV or a monitor? If a TV does it look washed out and a little zoomed in? TV's have some over scan options that really mess with the signal from PCs. Look around the menu options of the TV and see if you can turn it off, alot of em can't tho. Just google HDMI PC overscan and you'll get a better picutre of what I'm talking about.
For res I don't think it can do better than 720 and I've never seen any options for it. I'd call up Asus if your going to be making a decision that could mean eventually thousands of sales for them.
Also don't forget that they said they're launching the Windows 8 Transformer this year. That should suit your needs beautifully.

How are you accessing your Citrix Desktop? Using the Receiver? Or is there another app specifically for Citrix Desktop access?
EDIT: Never mind, the VDI i was trying to access was taken down recently by the systems team. Do'h. Time to build a server.

Me personally I've been using the citrix beta app, seems to work better.

I tried with the VGA adapter on my 22" samsung syncmaster and the desktop filled the screen perfectly. Via HDMI to my 42 inch HDTV I got overscan problems.
It is though the monitor I need to use to acheive my goal of using it as a citrix thin client. I hope we can manipulate the HDMI output more in ICS. It would be nice to use the monitor's native resolution (1680x1050).

Agreed. It has more options and seems more stable. Go figure.

The TF101 does not support greater than 720p output for mirroring. No word from Asus if they will ever bump it up to 1080p capability, since the Tegra 2 already struggles with 1080p video playback. You should wait for the TF700T for full 1080p output.

Actually 1080p is not what I need. 1280 is more than enough horisontal resolution, but 720 vertical is too little. If it could output 1280x1024 on an external monitor I'd be very happy.
What I say is that there should be an alternative to mirroring on the HDMI port. With the dock and usb ports the interal screen could be switched off and a resolution of choice be shown on the HDMI-connected display.

Record HDMI?

Is there some way to record the HDMI output of the screen?
... but anything that's being fed through HDMI is also on the tablet. This is a little confusing. If it were an HDMI INPUT i could imagine the desire to record, but what exactly are you displaying on an external display that you'd need to record?

Yes and I'm asking if how to record that (like they can on the IPad)

It's easy. Why do you want to record your hdmi output of the screen?

Easy like? How?
Why... I can think of two reasons to do it, first if you are a developer the video of your app can be pretty awesome recorded that way, and after editing you get a nice trailer that will make people buy it. The other one is doing video reviews.
From my point of view it's NOT easy: you need an HDMI video capture device and a computer fast enough to handle the massive flow of uncompressed video... maybe the computer part isn't as difficult as it might seem, however the whole HDMI capture device will be around 200 bucks.
You could just get a screen capture app. I don't know of any off the top of my head, but you don't need to capture HDMI....you just need to capture what is being displayed on the tablet screen.

Hm, I see Hauppauge Colossus card has HDMI input - its unencrypted signals of course, but I don't know if the TF101 outputs encrypted or not?

Uhm, nice price. Not full hd, but especially if it's for 720p that could be a good choice... still I have to admit I'm not sure about the kind of output from the Transformer. My guess is that it's encrypted to allow viewing of protected content... but it's just a guess.
You'd think the tablet could switch to protected if it was showing protected content, but i fear you are right.
- YouTube: Asus Transformer HDMI Screen Capture
- YouTube: ..and the accompanying HowTo
Many these will help - the first one has some suggested capture cards in the flaffle
..also be aware of HDCP before parting with any hard cash!
Note: HDMI out reported not working with Google Video
Yeah, we need a capture card, we already got that.
And if that first video is to be believe the transformer is outputting encrypted rubbish.
The whole idea behind HDMI is to prevent digital copying. A compromise by the major studios mandated before they would release their HD digital content

False. The idea behind HDMI is to transmit high resolution imagery in a digital format.
Copy prevention CAN be employed, but it doesn't have to be.
(and of course if the sole purpose is to make a copy of some copyrighted material that will always happen, all it takes is ONE person to succeed then it spreads like wildfire)
The resolution the TF101 outputs to the TV is exactly the same as the resolution of the screen (save the 80pixel on the bottom) making the HDMI out 1280x720. If you record the stuff screen, it should suffice quality-wise.

Isn't it HDCP that is meant to prevent digital copying? And I believe HDCP is the reason why Panasonic LCD TVs are unable to show the output of the TF - am I wrong?

Sorry, I was typing that at 2 AM. If you record the stuff on the screen, it will be the same if not better quality than using a Capture Card to record the HDMI out simply because they're both 720p but recording the screen will not record the extra grain that resulted as interference when transmitting signal out of the mini-HDMI port.
I can't speak to the Hauppauge card specifically, but I own a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle, which captures HDMI just fine on other devices at up to 1080i / 1080p, and it won't work with the Transformer.

Yes, HDCP is the "High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection" whereas HDMI is simply the "High-Definition Multimedia Interface "

Don't know about that - it displays fine on my Philips.

That's depressing.
So the conclusion is, you can't record the screen?

One S video output resolution

Anyone who's got the phone yet tested if the One S outputs 720p through HDMI?
It's basically the only thing I can't find, I did however find that the One X does, but it has got a 720p screen itself.
Michael
Hello,
I have connected the one S to my sony HD TV.
the result is a bit disappointing for two reasons:
quality is not so good
latency for example when slide photos is high
I'm using a MHL cable from PNY:
PNY Adaptateur MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) vers HDMI®
supposed to be compatible up to 1080p.
I didn't check yet the format resulting from TV point of view. I will try to find that and tell you.
For photos on TV, the Sony and HTC integrated DLNA is far better but not working all the time(seems that the TV is not visible as DLNA client all the time)
Bonus question: Is there a difference from using an MHL-adapter og the wireless dlna thingy?
Probably more lag with the wireless. Its not the best i've used it on 1080p and 720p, I think its outputting the native resolution of the phone.
Anyone got some new inputs? Thank you

I am looking forward to getting a bluetooth keyboard&mouse combo and an MHL cable.
I am surprised that it doesn't do 1080p, I thought that was native to ICS and that the GPU/CPU is the same as the One X

Yeah I thought it could do that too, and the reports of lag when outputting is kinda strange. It should be fast enough at half of full hd..
I have tested again MHL after upgrading to 2.21. Now scrolling in the gallery is smooth and videos are read in full 1080p(recognized by the tv).
I even have tested games, it's awesome!

[Q] Android screen on PC (high fps)

Hi everyone, I have to do a presentation of a game I developed for Android. I wanted to show my phone's screen on my PC, so it can be showed in the projector. The problem is, all of the ways I tried to do this result in minimum fps, like 5 or 10, and obviouly, to show a game performance this isn't enough.
So, I ask, is there a way to show my Android screen on a PC with high fps? With som kind of wire or something to pass video channel? (my phone only has usb and jack outputs...)
Thank you all!
Well the only reason some electronics devices show 1080p or true HD images is that it has a built it port specially designed for its purpose. Which is to display images. Its called the HDMI port.
Phones on the other case is the maximum you can get. Since its the maximum amount of pixels it can display on the device. Eg the bigger the screen the more pixels you need for a crisp image. The smaller the screen the less pixels because we don't need that much. But if we enlarge it from a small device we get large pixels.
Unless you have a laptop, tablet or other mp4 I don't think you can get higher than 10 fps

I have been looking for the answer to the same question for a long time now. I wanted to post video reviews for apps but nothing works. Obviously Screencast is too slow and emulators are even worse. The only way I've come across that gives great FPS so far, is buying a Media Capture Card, and a decent HDMI one costs around $100. Too expensive IMO but if you don't mind spending a little, I suggest you check it out. I guess that's how the game-making companies must do it...Oh well, let us know if it works out?

HDMI video glasses with Android phone

Thought i would shoot this question out there while still continuing to search for the solution.. Has anyone had any luck with using HDMI video glasses with an Android phone using HDMI mirroring? I have a EVO 4G running Cyan 7, HDMWin for mirroring, Crazyremote for remote access to my pc, and now just looking for video glasses to use as a portable monitor for the HDMI mirroring. Resolutions less than 720p would be fine too if there is a portable way of converting the resolution to something lower.
Thanks.

Anyone connected the S4 with Bravia (or any LCD) via MHL? I have a question then.

Hi, I have a Sony Bravia W6 42" and I was thinking that if I buy a MHL cable for the S4, then I will be able to connect the phone to the TV and will be able to watch movies in full screen, those 1920x800 resolution ones which are normally can't watch in full screen, without those disgusting black bars!
My question is, what about quality? Will the picture quality degrade if I watch via MHL, than watching through a PHD or a Pen drive?
If someone has already experience in this matter kindly input here.
Thanks.
No one? I really need to know this.
Interested as well

I've used MHL on my S4 and my LG3DTV so I'll leave my first impressions. I'll try it again tonight to just be absolutely concrete but here's my immediate thougths.
1.) You need to make sure your MHL adapter supports the S4. There are some 5 pin ones and 11 pin ones. I have the Samsung adapter so I'm fine but make sure you get the right one.
2.) The black bars are part of the aspect ratio. Our screen is 16:9 so if your movie is 16:9 it'll fill the whole screen. Some movies use wider aspect ratios so you'll get the black bars on the top and bottom. I'll check tonight if you get the bars outputting to TV. I can't remember that.
3.) I believe there is some overscan (rather underscan) when outputting via MHL. It seems like I had a black border all the way around when I played a few games on my TV with MHL and a bluetooth controller (which is awesome by the way). Some HD games did fill the screen and was a pretty decent experience (NFSMW, A8, MC4, Osmos).
Again I'll test these out tonight and post some pics with my other phone so you can see for yourself before buying anything.

Ah finally someone replied. If I buy I will buy the original S4 MHL, that's not a worrying factor. But as you said, there's some under/over processing, hmm, that's what I was wondering! I mean if you clearly see picture quality degradation while playing via MHL in comparison to USB devices (PHD or Pen drive) then I will certainly not be interested, I will take black bars happily over a poorer picture.

picture seems to show nicely providing the res is HD (1920x1080) otherwise some pixelation (as TV and Phone is Full hd)
i get some lag when tapping the screen and overlay to pause skip video appears but when the overlay minimizes video starts again at normal speed.
sound works fine.
if phone is in portrait mode then ull have black on either side on tv .
ratio for tv 16:9 16:10 is fine
