Not sure if it's a computer, ROM, Phone, or app issue, but after a few minutes or so of being connected via wifi tether, it just stops working. According to the phone, I'm still connected, but the upload/download numbers reset to zero and pages stop loading in my laptop browser. The only fix I have is to disable wifi tether and re-enable it.
Any idea what would be causing this? I'm on Fresh 2.0d and have whatever version of wifi tether came on the ROM.

It's actually shutting off your data connection. If you take a look your data becomes dormant. If you turn of data and then turn it back it works again. I think it may be with the version. I just saw I had 2.0 and I'm going to put 1.6 back on. I'll let you know if it fixes the problem.
Here is the link for 1.6
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wireless_tether_1_60_htc.apk
If you put on your sdcard and install using a file explorer it will change the script that is used and work.
Actually, I just checked, and I'm already running 1.6. Any other suggestions? Haha
are you getting a or making a telephone call when it conks out?
R
When ever your data goes to 0 is Ev in status bar white or gray? Might try doing adb logcat when you start up wifi tether or when you have the problem. I don't know what is causing the problem, but whever I turn off mobile networks and turn it back on it works fine after that.
I'm doing a logcat and using my wifi tether right now to see if I still have the problem.
Might try removing the one off your phone and push the one from the link above.

I was having the exact same problem. Read the 2nd post..No. No calls or messages or anything when it happened to me.
Okay, here's the search I did with old outdated info from other phones that aren't relevant to my problem:
http://www.google.com/cse?cx=partne...9-1&q=mobile+network+repeatedly+disconnecting
Regaw's latest is what I am running. I am using wireless tether, the one that came with his rom, and it will lose internet connection about every 3 minutes.
Why is this a problem? Normally I use ICQ in my job, because I work online., I am constantly having to have people resend me messages and stuff due to this. It also interrupts and breaks any large downloads I do, normally larger than 10-20mb, and causes me a big headache when I try to work in FTP (for those non-tech-savvy, working in ftp is basically working on the guts of a website to make it work)
Are you trying to use your phone while you are tethering? I have only used wireless tethering once but I was playing with the options while I was using it and it wouldnt intermittenly lose connection. I just assumed it was because I was messing with my phone.
No, my phone is sitting on my stand, charging, and I have the wake-lock off so the phone sleeps. Did the same thing when wake-lock was on, too
Check your Wi-Fi sleep policy?
I am not sure if Tether over rides that or not. Maybe you have it set to a time limit. Just guess though, mine is flawless...as with every other aspect of my life...
I haven't used my wireless tether in a while, but I was also having this problem. After about 2-3 minutes of working it would stop. It appears as thought the data connection is dropping, because I was also not able to use the browser on the phone to connect to the internet. I had to diasble the data connection and then restart it. This solved the problem 95% of the time. There were 2 things I was going to try, but haven't. If you want to try them and see if they work and let us know, they are
1.Turn off data connection, turn data connection back on and then starty Wireless tether and then connect computer to Wireless tether
2.Turn off data connection, start wireless tether, connect computer to wireless tether, and then restart data connection.
If any of these work it may be possible to get a script or an app to do this.

What verison of wifi tethering are you using? I've had this problem before but that was using the newest 2.0 version of the wifi tethering. I reverted back to an older 1.6 version and i don't have any issues.

With the eris based ROMs I had no problem with using the 1.6 version, but after the Sprint leaked ROMs I have tried every version and still had problems. My solution works for me, but it is a couple of extra steps that I need to do that i shouldn't have to. It's just crazy how some peop;le have problem and others don't

dont have my phone by me... it's whatever version comes pre-packaged with regawMOD latest
I concur that it is weird how some people do have issues and others don't. I wish this app worked as well as the htc wifi tether app for the winmo phones.
Jerry43812,
I would just check the version then if its a 2.0 version uninstall it and then install the 1.6 version. If its the 1.6 version uninstall it and then reinstall. That worked for some of the roms that I've been using. I'm on the sprint leaked version now and it works just fine for me. I wish they would get the password working on it as well as hiding your SSID.
my friend had this problem on his hero until he turned on wake lock in the wireless tether app. leaves the screen on, but works
My captivate has a problem. It'll connect to WiFi no problem. Unfortunatly, after a while (could be anywhere from long 30 seconds to a few minutes) the WiFi stops sending data. I have to disable/reenable wifi to get it to work again. It still says connected to network, it just won't receive data.
Anyone know of this happening, have a fix, or maybe what I should look for that might be causing this issue?
I disabled recently installed running apps, no help.
I did try a speedfix last night, and it was unsuccessful, and I uninstalled it. Didn't test enough after that to know for sure if it was the issue, but I don't think so.
It was like, I was going through google reader, started a youtube vid, paused it, restarted it, and it wasn't loading. Just wouldn't load. That's when I think the problem started, and I haven't installed anything since then, that i haven't disabled/uninstalled.
Have you tried flashing the stock OS. Maybe this will help. My wifi has been solid so far but i will see if i get a problem like yours. Try reflashing. If it doesn't work post back.

I have the exact same issue on enterprise class cisco wifi APs. The only difference is the symptom is immediate, and not after an interval of time.

I'm thinking of this, but I don't know...
I have my music on my computer, I have my .apk's in a folder and my market synced with appbrain. Anything else I need to do? Will appbrain reset, and make me go find and reinstall everything?
What about the apps that I paid for, what happens to them?
Would be my first flash, and I'm thinking about flashing one of those I9000 roms, but that would be a last ditch effort. I really hope to avoid this.

It's an AT&T U-verse router, and only started a few hours ago, as near as I can tell.
I experience the same phenomenon of dropped wifi, and it occurs at any AP, but I have an interesting twist.
One time out of twenty when I start wifi, the 3g icon doesn't go away, but stays up on the status line with my wifi icon. On those rare occasions, my wifi stays solid for days. Unfortunately, it's random and rare.
same issue
My Wifi stops sending data and the 3G still shows. Sometimes restarting the router helps and sometimes nothing helps.
For anyone that might find this later, turns out (after two rom flashes) it was the router. I found this out when connecting my laptop to it. Surprised the captivate didn't admit it lost connection though.
I wish that were the case for me. My Captivate stays connected, but stops receiving at many different APs--Home, Starbucks, airport. I need a solution or a Scotch.
Peter
I had this exact problem, I tried a factory reset and it was still broken. I exchanged my phone and now it works perfectly holding a signal (except for enterprise 802.1x ap's which are known to be broken). (Also if you run dd-wrt check your logs for "deauthenticated due to local deauth", there is a problem with the wpa/wpa2 modules in either android or dd-wrt that they are not compatible with each other).
I actually found this searching for a solution to my own issue with WiFi. I actually fixed it while I was reading this. Unfortunately I have AT&T DSL with 2wire Modem. I went into the setting and setup MAC filtering and assigned it it's own IP. It has worked flawlessly for the past hour. I know this probably will not help when at other locations but at least at home I have a good connection.

Same router type as mine that lost it originally. Interesting, wonder if there is a connection? Or random coincidence.
I'm having a wifi issue as well, but not to the extent others have.
I connect fine, but it appears as though my data download speed is capped at <2mbps for both wifi and 3g?
My wife's iPhone is getting download speeds of over 10mbps on the same wifi network and >3mbps over 3g.
Is it worth flashing back to stock? or is this a known issue?
I'm running stock JH3 with SRE 1.2.1a with lagfix
I have this same issue and it's really random. Running JH2, sometimes it works on wifi, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes disabling\re-enabling wifi fixes it, but rebooting the phone always fixes it. Really frustrating...
I've tried tethering using foxfi (never works no matter which rom I'm on), android wifi tether (SSID doesn't show up 90% of the time), mobile hotspot (data connection drops out randomly), and native tethering in CM10 and I've always had problems.
I never had any issues on my past phones (Droid1, DroidX, Thunderbolt, Nexus, Rezound). Does anyone know why tethering is so buggy on this phone? Anyone have suggestions on which tethering app to use? The only way I can get the SSID to show up in android wifi tether is if I reboot the phone. I've tried all of these tethering apps/methods on beans, synergy, and CM10
My settings for android wifi tether are:
Device profile: Galaxy Nexus CDMA/LTE
Routing fix enabled
I've also tried
Device profile: Generic ICS
Routing fix enabled
Thanks
Foxfi works for me but for some reason I have to wait around 2-5 minutes for it to work

I don't use it a lot as I don't want to take too many chances with losing my unlimited data from a VZ TOS violation, but when I do use it it seems to work just fine.
I used it last night for a while at a meeting where somebody else needed an internet connection & it worked just fine.

Are you using a custom Rom? Could that affect it at all?
WiFi tether for SynergyRom is pretty buggy (wasn't working for me at least). But FoxFi was working fine when I tried it. Although like a previous post, it would take 2-5 minutes for it to actually start working :/

Thanks for the info on foxfi. I'll try using it again. I hope they can fix android Wifi tether soon as I use it every day: (
I have the exact same issues with Wifi Tether app. SSID likely to not appear but a reboot fixes it.
root6 ROM, same behavior stock versus having frozen a bunch of stuff. For quite a while I thought I had frozen something that made it work but after some tinkering I finally flashed back to stock and discovered that it's just unreliable. The only reliable answer for me is to reboot immediately prior to firing up the app.
I have found that my laptop causes a connection delay sometimes... it is that stupid windows "identifying network" thing and it will prevent internet connectivity until it finishes. I have not seen the missing SSID at all and I have used both FoxFi and the stock stuff. I use it quite a bit (at least 2 hours per day, sometimes as much as 9) so I have a pretty good amount of time with it. I disconnect and reconnect at least twice during that in a typical day as well (out of range, or just not using the machine so i put it in hibernation).
I am on Root66 and have nothing frozen.
I have no issues using Wifi Tether on my stock rooted ROM. Here are my settings:
Device-Profile: Generic ICS
Setup Method: Auto
Wifi Encryption: Enabled
Channel: 01
WiFi-driver reload: checked
MSS clamping: unchecked
Routing fix: unchecked
DNS: 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 (personal preference)
Disable Wake-Lock: Checked
Im using Foxfi....Works ok. I sometimes have to disconnect and reconnect because it seems to become inactivate. But its doing the trick till I get my home internet back up.
I too have the same issues as op. All of them are very inconsistent, its extremely annoying!
I am using a stock ROM. I use foxfi daily and have not had any problems or delays when using it. I have not changed any settings in the application itself other than changing the ssid. It only takes the 5-10 seconds to stop or start the tethering.
However WiFi tether on the S3 never worked for me.

I've been running CM10 on my HOXL for a while, but I noticed today that I couldn't connect to the wifi hotspot I set up on it.
I've been able to in the past so for the last few hours I've been trying every combination to achieve a working result like it was previously:
tried connecting to hotspot from several devices - none work
tried rebooting ALL devices (including phone) - still can't connect
I can connect to it as long as it's an open network, but this is no good as I want to keep the security on the hotspot
I can tether via bluetooth or I can tether using an app - but I don't want this, I want my wifi hotspot back
I've reflashed from fresh wipe - still can't connect if hotspot has a password
tried both security settings, neither let me connect (but again, open is fine)
I've reflashed back to the stock ROM (Telstra Clean ROM anyway) - this actually works, let's me connect via wifi hotspot with security
flashed back to CM10 afterwards - wifi hotspot doesn't work again.
So basically I can't connect to my wiFi hotspot if it has security applied, while my phone is running CM10 (nightlies)
Anyone share this problem / have any more suggestions to try?

Yup, been through there and can't find anything (at least through the few dozen pages I've skimmed). Odd thing is it WAS working up until yesterday with the ROM, now it's stopped working. I tried reverting back to an earlier ROM as well, no dice.
I can't post in the thread to ask directly in there either.
Have you been flashing nightlies? The latest updates have been generating new Mac address for your phone when you flash. Its cause several problems. I had to change my router to wepkey access only. Cause I have Mac filters on my router. Not sure if that helps. Good luck though.

Yeah, I read that too. But my phone CONNECTS to wifi fine, the wifi is WORKING fine.
The problem is when I am trying to set it up as a hotspot that the issues are occurring.
To reiterate: it's only when I have security set on for the hotspot that I can't connect to it. (But having an open hotspot is not suitable)
No clue... I just tested hotspot and connected my wife's iPhone just fine. However I had to do a reboot to get WiFi back. They are tied in. Sorry I could be more help.

I wonder if it would have anything to do with what radio your on? I all ways flash 1.85 cause it works best for WiFi and I don't have LTE in my area so it works well for my H. Not sure though throwing out ideas for you.

I have the same issue running cm10 so you are not alone. For as often as I use it though its not an issue for me. The chances of someone jumping on to an open AP I roll for 10 minutes is slim. In the end remember, this is a rom still under nightly development so turbulence is to be expected.

I'm used to the turbulence. I was rocking ICS on my Desire which was, buggy at the best of times, but I was pretty tolerant of it.
Have another ROM running on my Nexus7 as well.
Other than this the CM10 ROM is incredible! I'd love to be able to run the hotspot open, but I know it's get milked by everyone around me... I appreciate everyone's help so far, I'll keep asking around and trying different options.
I find it odd it's not happening for everyone, that it's only started happening recently for me (probably after I briefly tried paranoid android on the device, before returning to CM nightlies), and that it works fine again if I use the stock sense ROM (yuck.)

Last radio I flashed was this:
EVITA_Telstra_2.40_Radio_0.20os.32.09.15_10.113.32.28L
I *DO* have good LTE where I am, so I would LIKE to be able to use it...
Cue dumb question: I flash the ROM then flash the radio yeah?
Well, it woul;ld appear I'm not the only person facing this issue at the moment either.
Also appears that CM10 nightly might be having trouble flashing radios... stay tuned.
Exactly the same problem here. Have been dirty flashing the currently CM10 nightly every couple of days and as of 7/10 hotspot (with password) and usb tethering have been broken. Hotspot works fine without security though.. Flashed back to 2/10 and it's working fine, just have to put up with glitchy graphics a while longer
Yup you're right, I flashed back to 10/2 - hotspot works with security just fine.
How often are you checking the updates to see if the wifi hotspot works with security again?
Looks like it's all fixed with the 12 Oct nightly
