Hello, I'm new to the Android scene having come from the iPhone so have a few questions before updating my HTC Desire S.
I would like to install the basic non-branded version of Android 2.3.5 with Scenes 3.0.
What I have is a HTC Desire S on Orange UK, Android 2.3.3, Sense 2.1, software 1.47.61.1
Now before the update came out I rooted my phone with Revolutionary and am S-OFF
with HBOOT-6.98.1002 and RADIO-3805.06.02.03_M I also installed superuser and I was about to install a custom ROM to get rid of the Orange bloatware.
But would I be able to achieve this by just installing a RUU .exe, ie this one ?
RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.8_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_225161_signed.exe
or do I need to find the latest Europe ROM and flash with ROM Manager?
apologies for my ignorance I've been reading the forum but I'm still a newbie to Android, I would like to get some advise so I don't brick my phone

First if you run this RUU or any non brand specific over your branded phone you will brick it.
Second: using RUU /a proper one/ will bring you back to Stock, and you will lose your root and S-OFF. But in your case running RUU will brick the phone because you have a Revolutionary bootloader /6.98.1002/ which has a protection and cannot be overwritten with RUU.
Third - custom ROM is a modified software (which is always rooted) that can be flashed via custom recovery (look at the sticky guide for beginners) The RUU is a Stock software (used in the past by HTC for updates)
Anyway if you want to debrand you can do this with a Goldcard and the RUU, mentioned by you but an earlier version like 1.28.401.1 or 1.47.401.4 (they can be unlocked with Revolutionary, the latest - 2.10.401.8 cannot), then S-OFF and root again/flash a custom ROM.
You can use the latest with a Goldcard, but then to gain root you will have to use htcdev.com to unlock the bootloader (which will send info about this to HTC and probably void your warranty - during the process you have to confirm your agreement with that)
Thanks for the quick reply and heads up on the Goldcard.
So after some reading on the Goldcard I take it that all I have to do is make myself a SD Goldcard and have it in the phone, then run the 2.10.401.8 RUU this will install Android 2.3.5 + Sense 3 unbranded but automatically S-OFF & un-root the phone.
(I'm not worried about losing these at this time)
but do I need to change anything about my Revolutionary bootloader "6.98.1002" before doing the above ?
Cheers

Yes you should replace your bootloader with an Engineering one like 0.98.2000 (link in my signature) or 2.00.2002
you can use Android flasher for that (link in the Index thread)
Then I suggest you to use an older European version to debrand (1.28 or 1.47) instead of RUU and use custom ROMs in order to keep the S-OFF and root
There are plenty of custom ROMs based on the latest official Sense 3.0 that you can flash instead the original (and you will have no bloatware on it)
Thanks for the info amidabuddha. I will give it a try tonight.
Just a small clarification if there is a term confusion:
You should follow this procedure ONLY IF you want to debrand the phone completely (i.e. change the version to an unbranded of all system components: hboot, misc, etc.) on low level
In case that under debrand you mean clean OS, without carrier specific software you need just to flash any Sense 3.0 based custom ROM, flash with ROM Manager and you are done. Then if you don't like the Orange splash screen you can replace it with Android flasher to another. Basically there is no difference whether you are branded or not to use custom ROMs. Branded means that your system version will stay Orange with any ROM running on it.
So you will stay branded and you want to return to Stock someday you will have to use the Orange RUU (but this is healthier in order to keep your warranty)

hey there,
bought my gf a desire s to christmas. i, as a sensation user at the moment am very comfortable with development. flashing, adb, fastboot and things like that are working flawless.
as i don't have so much time to read atm, i have some questions concerning the way to set the desire s up. it was shipped with 1.47 rom, t-mobile branded, sense 2.1, android 2.3.1 and hboot 0.98.0002
i want to flash this rom: endymion sense v3.1 (android 2.3.5, sense 3.5)
i already achieved s-off with revolutionary, hboot is now 6.98.1002 with radio 3805.06.02.03_M. 4ext recovery 2.2.7RC5 is installed as well.
now i saw, that there is RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.8_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_225161_signed.exe availble. i also read in the forum, that this ota brings some parts for firmware, which are not flashed with a custom rom.
so would you recommend to flash this ruu first? wouldn't i lose s-off then? would i be abled to achieve s-off again after flashing this? also, for my sensation i would have to supercid first - i didn't read about this here in the forums.
what i would want to do:
1. flash RUU_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.8_Radio_20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M_release_225161_signed.exe
2. run revolutionary again
3. flash custom recovery
4. flash endymion v3.1
would it be possible this way? or would you recommend any other way to me? i want to have all firmware parts as up to date as possible before i flash the custom rom.

Cause you are already s-off I would say it's senseless to use the ruu first, because it would put you back to s-on like you suggested, but only if the revolutionary bootloader doesn't make problems.
There are many reports of problems with it and I would say you should replace it with the 2.00.2002 engineer bootloader.
before just flash a custom recovery (I would recommend 4ext touch) and if your done with the bootloader flash the ROM of your choice.
To get bootloader, recovery,... just look at the index thread at the development section, it's all in there.
The last step to achieve a full upgraded phone would be to update the radio to the latest version, this you will also find at the index thread.
Happy modding
Oh and welcome, sry^^

is there a guide you are referring to? i already got 4ext recovery installed, but i don't find any post concerning 2.00.2002 bootloader. if i flash this one i would stay s-off? and it would bring me all parts which i would be missing without 2.10.401.8 RUU?

Yes this guide is to "downgrade" (in fact it's an upgrade, even if the version number is lower).
Yes you would stay s-off.
No it not brings you all what is missing, just a part of it, the rest you get with flashing the radio and the rom.

It's not really needed, you can do it if it's in the zip (or better said if it's there it's done at the flashing procedure), but you're also good to go without it.
Hi at all,
I need to know if what i saying is right.
I Have HTC Desire S with original Rom 2.10.401.8 and HBOOT 2.00.0002 S-On
My goal is to install the Endymion
I read many thread and i understood that the curret way to do this is:
1) Downgrade My ROM from 2.3.5 ( 2.10.401.8 with HBOOT 2.00.0002) to a ROM 2.3.3 with HBOOT 0.98.00000 (Ex: RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.47.401.4_Radio_20.28I.30.085 AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199410_signed.exe)
To do this i need to follow the steps from 1 to 7 of this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20535265&postcount=26
2) Now i need to change HBOOT, Change Recovery and Root the phone. To do this i need to use Revolutionary tool for Windows from http://revolutionary.io/ and follow the istruction.
3) Now i can download the custom Rom and install using this way:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257731
Is It right?
Thanks
K.
100% right, just follow the instructions given by a particular ROM to flash though.
You can also look at HTCdev, but no point in using it (telling HTC you have voided your warranty) so I would use your method.
And 1.47.401.4 is Hboot 0.98.0002 (not that is matters though)
I have just done this this exact way and it worked great
Hi guys. I would like do the same thing with a Desire S, hboot 2.00.0002 S-ON.
After downgrading i'll have hboot 0.98.00000 S-ON.
Than, I should use revolutionary to get my phone S-OFFed and with a new recovery tool, is it right?! (Is there any guide, cause I'm a beginner...?)
Now, is my anroid 2.3.3 phone rooted?!?! So that I can install SU to remove app...
And now, if I would like to come back to android 2.3.5 with sense 3.0 rooted, can I flash a custom rom!? Or do I need something else, like installing clockworkmod recovery?
Thanks !!!

I would install 4ext recovery or the mentioned clockworkmod recovery.
After you have done so, you can flash any ROM (custom or not).
I prefer using a sense 3.5 ROM, but you can either choose sense 3.0 or AOSP.
But before flashing a new ROM you should always backup your system and data
Have fun!

Hi I am new to these things and my brother messed up my phone.
HTC Desire S Unbranded (Purchased in UK)
Unlocked
SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0002
RADIO-3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC-boot
Aud 22, 2011
Unlocked through HTCDev
Currently I have a custom ICS rom installed. All I want is a way to revert to Stock 2.3.3 Rom or 2.3.5 Rom so that I can receive OTA updates.
I have read my many ways on Xda but can't figure out which one is for me. I am new to this field hence need help.
1. find the correct RUU for your phone(a WWE version i think is what you need or use a goldcard)
2. lock your bootloader. fastboot oem lock
3. run the RUU

I have read about Gold Card procedure, just want to clarify that if I back to stock with Goldcard method will than I be able to get OTA updates?
2ndly how can I find a WWE version for Desire S?
Sorie but I am not much into these things so dont wanna mess it up, thats why asking before applying and in ur opinion which method will be easy
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506 - you can find all the available RUU's here. Eventually you can google the name of the file to find faster mirrors.
I really can't answer the OTA update question, but i think you can.
Try to read/search the forums, i mentioned this earlier, i don't think there's a problem undiscussed in here.
You can try to find your CID number (fastboot getvar all) and try to find the appropiate RUU, but i think WWE is what you are looking for
If you want to flash back to stock, I don't think you can the the updates because it is s-off I tried it but I rooted it via revolutionary. Nit sure if it the same with the htc dev unlock but it just stuck to a picture of a phone with a /!\ on top and it didn't update to sense 3.5
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA
There was never an update to Sense 3.5 to begin with.
You WILL get all updates if you revert to stock, no matter if S-ON or S-OFF.
Personally I think it's a complete waste of time, and I don't understand the authors of zillion "return to stock" threads lately. The stock ROM will be laying on XDA for download long before the OTA will reach most of them.
Yeah I mean sense 3 but I did go to my backup of my stock Rom and tried the update, it installed but I think it was because I was using cwm recovery but it didn't work no matter how many times I tried

Hello,
i am totally newbie here. Spent last 2 nights studying forum threads, but im still confused.
What is better to unlock via htcdev and remain S-ON and HBOOT 2.00.0002 or to downgrade HBOOT ?
I would like to tryout AOKP, Cyanogen and Fallout roms. Alternatively i want to try official ICS ASAP.

Unlocking via HTCdev leaves the phone S-ON. Therefore you always have to flash the the kernel (boot.IMG) from a PC via FASTBOOT when you flash a new rom with a different base. E.G. CM and Fallout. If the base hasn't change you don't need to.
If you downgrade and S-OFF your device you don't have to do that. Plus you can flash different radios (barely necessary).
HTCdev unlock is easier to do and gives you a lot of possibilities.
S-OFF is a little more advanced and there is a little more danger to brick your phone when you don't do it carefully.
Nevertheless I prefer the hard way since HTCdev is not the way I would go. Plus HTC knows that my device is unlocked.
Gesendet von meinem HTC Desire S mit Tapatalk
Agreed. Although if you're changing ROMs often then HTCDev is not the easier way. Flashing the boot.img can be quite a pain if you're doing it often.
There was a nice text about that in another thread.

Ok,
so what you guys are basically saying is, that when i unlock my phone thru HTC-Dev, the company knows about it.
From this point of view, it's better to downgrade hboot and S-OFF.
I have one more question - if original ICS for DS will be realeased, how can i install it ? Do i have to revert to original hboot and original sense rom to find the update and install then ?
You'll find it here ...
Finally i temprooted this way
Zergush & misc - to temp root and prepare phone to be downgrade
Downgrade to RUU with 0.98.0000
S-OFF & install ClockWorkMod Recovery
Install Cyanogen 7.2
As rom i chose Cyanogenmod 7.2 stable. I am unexperienced with custom roms and dont want to be disappointed by semi-functional ICS roms by now.
If you're going for gingerbread take a look at reaper as well. It's basically a much faster version of CM7
For now, i am going to stick with ginger till the kernel will be released and the roms fully functional.
In future i would like to test ICS roms, but after new kernel. And of course Jelly Bean, if someone port it.
Basically if i want to change ROM, i just put it in root of SDcard, boot revolutionary, wipe and install from ZIP ? Is that simple now, after S-OFF ?
Thanx for the tip to check out reaper, btw
Yep that's all you need to do. I have to say though don't be afraid to just make a backup of your current ROM in CWM and try out other things.
Dan-fish, thanks for all your help
But i have one more question. What is all that mess around eMMC chip ? How can it happen to me ? Often flashing, installing from zip or ?
No the most common reason is pulling the battery out while the phone is on.

Dear remusator..
I'm trying downgrade hboot from 2.00.0002 to 0.98.00000 but I could not.
Can you explane how you make downgrade?
My device is "UNLOCKED"
Hboot - 2.00.0002
RADIO - 3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC - boot
Thanks..
Mine was locked. Check the first post. I didn't unlock via htc dev, maybe that's the problem.
I followed these tutorials :
1, Downgrade ruu and hboot to make root possible
sw 2.10<= http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399331
sw 2.11>=http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443636
2, S-OFF

section How To: S-Off your device with Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool (For HBOOT 0.98.0000, 0.98.0002)
3, Choose rom you like and flash via recovery. First i tried was cyanogenmod 7,2. Then i made backup, wiped again and installed AOKP. I'm not going back )
While browsing forums, i found topic about downgrading while UNLOCKED. Search forums, i can't find it anymore.
Btw, check your software version - tutorials differ from sw version.
PS: don't be afraid. In my case, everything went just fine.
Stock Rom needed
Hi remusator, which stock ROM did you use?
I'm mostly finding a lot of dead links and very few live ones for stock Desire S Roms.
I have used quite - Fallout / AOKP / Cyanogen 7.2
But i returned back to Stock. I used pre-rooted. I don't need root at the moment, but the prerooted rom can run on custom bootloader.
I use 2.10.401.9 sw version, take a look here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480576
Before root my official rom was 2.10.401.8 - but the link here on forum is dead, so i decided to use newer 2.10.401.9 instead. I haven't found any bug yet. It seems to work fine.

Hi,
sorry for asking because the forums are full of information on how to root the HTC Sensation but I'm a bit overwhelmed and though I read through several threads before starting I just want to be sure I understand everything right and the information provided is still valid.
First some information about my phone:
My phone is completely stock and just arrived back from an HTC repair (no motherboard change concerning repair report). It's not branded (bought retail).
Android 4.0.3
Sense 3.6
Software version: 3.33.401.53
Kernel-Version: 3.0.16-g31a4fc7
Baseband-Version: 11.76A.3504.00U_11.24A.3504.31_M
Build number: 3.33.401.53 CL391535
Browser-Version: WebKit/534.30
HBOOT 1.27.0000
I'm on Windows 7 x64.
My goal is to install a JB ROM with root access.
I saw some all-in-one tools to achieve my goal:
[TOOL][2 DEC] HTC Sensation/XE/4G Super Utility (AIO) by kgs1992 v8.0
[TOOL] HTC Sensation 4G All-In-One Toolkit V4.0 [7-16-2013] [Noob-Proof]
Is it safe to use such tools, do they well in guiding me through the needed steps and which one is better/safer/easier/more up-to-date?
If going "manually" as far as I understood I have two choices:
1. S-OFF via HTC Dev unlock (auggie2ks guide)
OR
2. S-OFF via the new method HERE.
Which one is better/safer/easier? Will they work with firmware 3.33 (only 3.32 is mentioned)?
Concerning the 2nd guide the wire trick is easier in 1st guide? What else is more complicated there?
Now concerning the order of the manual steps and some questions (referring to [GUIDE] How to Root & S-OFF HTC Sensation - HBOOT 1.27.0000 & Firmware 3.33! and [GUIDE] Juopunutbear S-OFF (HBOOT 1.27.0000 with 3.32 ICS Firmware)):
1. Requirements:
1.1 HTC drivers (windows)
1.2 Enable USB Debugging
1.3 SDCARD ready to be wiped
1.4 Prepared paperclip
2. Steps to perform in that order
2.1 HTC Dev unlock (in case of not using the new method in point 2 above)
2.2 Temp root the phone by flashing Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
How to flash?
2.3 Flash boot.img from Stock 3.32 Rooted ROM in Fastboot
Currently I seem to be on 3.33 so which one to use and where to get the stock rooted ROM from?
2.4 Run Juopunutbear, follow instructions and do the wire trick
2.5 Flash custom recovery (4-EXT) with HTC Sensation 4G All-In-One Toolkit
2.6 Permanently root the phone with HTC Sensation 4G All-In-One Toolkit
2.7 Write Super CID
Do I need this (unbranded retail phone)?
Further questions:
I also read about some universal Firmware HERE. Do I need this when already on (stock) 3.33?
Do I need to flash some special radio (I'm in Germany)?
ROM decision:
After all the mess with S-OFF I'd like to install a nice JB ROM and would be very happy for suggestions because of the great amount of ROMs available in the DEV forum.
What features should I pay attention on (I noticed some problems on stock with free RAM and maybe for example there are some ROMs addressing this in some way)?
Thanks in advance for some hints
Regs,
slaecker

For rooting as S-Off, Unlock bootloader first and then follow auggie2ks guide for S-off as the wire trick is relatively easier than no htcdev unlock method.
If your goal is to only install custom JB Rom then you can do it by just unlocking bootloader and then flashing 4Ext Recovery via fastboot. For flashing Rom just enable smartflash in the 4EXT recovery tools option and you're good to go to flash custom ROM.
For rooting there is a permanent one click root tool present in ganeshp guide for S-Off(No htcdev unlock one).
For flashing universal firmware you need to be S-Off. If you plan to do so then do S-off now as Stock ROM is a prerequisite to attain S off.
For good JB Rom you have many options. If you want Sense based ROM then flash ViperS 3.1.2 JB with Sense 4+.

Hi,
many thanks for the reply.
I wonder what exactly is universal firmware and if I need it at all?
If I go for S-OFF are the steps I wrote above correct or have I mixed something or unneccessary stuff in there?
What about Super CID? What exactly is this and do I need that?
Concerning a good JB ROM I prefer non-Sense because meanwhile I like the feel of pure Android.

universal firmware is a patched firmware and you can flash it only when you are on S-OFF
if you go for S-OFF just follow only ganeshp's guide
supercid gives you the ability to install whatever ruu.exe you want

Yes, relatively they're safe. But I highly recommend not using them. They will unlock your device, but you will have a hard time maintaining it.

The wire trick will be a easier in method 1.
If you just want JB roms, and seeing as you are on 3.3x already, you need not change your firmware (s-off not needed for flashing roms). You however can update your radio if you choose to S-OFF.
With S-OFF, you'll have a easier time flashing roms though.

You should have a custom recovery by now. You can flash zips in it.

S-OFF is needed to superCID and to flash unsigned firmware and/or hboots. Unless you want to flash an ruu not originally meant for your device you'll need superCID.
