Power+volume down is not working - myTouch 4G General

Hi,
When I click Power+volume down is not working.
Any ideas?

Turn off the phone.
Hold Volume Down.
Press Power, hold for a second. Keep holding Volume Down.
You'll get the menu.
Next time, you could look at Youtube guides, and see how people explain, what to press and when. It makes things more visible and clear.
Search is your friend.

Thanks.

You said your phone is unlocked. Make sure it is rooted. Download Terminal Emulator and run. One running type:
su
Hit enter. A box should pop up asking to allow or deny superuser access to Terminal Emulator. If that is the case, you have root.
Download Rom Manager and use it to install clockworkmod recovery. Once complete, make a backup in recovery.
Find a ROM you want, download it, snd use CWMR to wipe everything but your sd card. Then flash the ROM.
Remember, if something goes wrong you can use your backup.

mytouch root
I clicked in emulator su and i got message 'permission denied '.
After downloading clockModRecovery, i got a message that my phone is not rooted.
I have Visionary r14 on my device but did not use it yet, since i want to have clear understanding of how to proceed.
Please advise.
Thanks.

You have been on XDA since 2009, you should know bow to search and how to look for answers before posting a question. You need to go to the development section and check out ultimate s-off and the resource bible.

Use visionary to temp root. Then attempt a permanent root. I never remember reading that in the guide. It just said temp root, run gfree to get s-off and you're done. I rebooted and didn't have superuser, so I tried perm root and that did it.
You really do need to read though. People go to a LOT of effort to put those guides and tutorials together so questions like yours need not be asked.

thanks all. phone is rooted.

If it was s-off, all you had to do was push a custom recovery.img and flash a rom with root

Please do yourself a favor and install engineering bootloader. It'll save you from a situation of both recovery and OS borked, allowing you to flash through fastboot.

Hello everyone, I have found article while googling about how to unlock HTC SENSATION, if it is not against forum rules I can give URL, now I just give you pasted text...
How to Root HTC Sensation 4G
Posted on 19 June 2011 by Android Advice
These are the easy to follow instructions for rooting the HTC Sensation 4G. While we have had great luck with this method please be aware that you follow these instructions at your own risk. The HTC Sensation 4G is currently one of the most popular android phones of 2011.
Your device must also be s-off in order for the instructions below to work. Most of the Sensations are s-on although once we have found a way to turn s-off on all sensations we will add that to these instructions.
TAKE NOTE THAT THE HTC SYNC MUST BE REMOVED FROM YOUR PC BEFORE FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS. YOU CAN RE-INSTALL IT AFTER YOU ARE DONE ROOTING THE DEVICE.
Root Instructions for the HTC Sensation 4G:
1. Enable USB Debugging mode on your phone (settings … applications … 2. development … check USB Debugging mode)
3. Make sure USB debugging is enabled
4. Make sure you have an SD card formatted and in the phone
5. Transfer the APK on the phone and install it (download the apk here)
6. Open the APK and press the root button
7. Wait a few minutes and the device will reboot, be patient it can take a while (10 minutes or so)
8. Make sure the Superuser app is install and working
9. Congrats your HTC Sensation is Rooted!

I have not tested it because I don't now if this web page is safe, has anybody tested it ? ? ? Here is above mentioned APK (GingerBreak-v1.20.apk)
that cant be real.. what does the apk do?
Its not real, its already been posted and it doesn't work.
Phone needs to be s-off. So nothing interesting here. If you have an s-off phone you can flash a rooted custom rom and don't need gingerbreak
but if device is S-off doesn't it mean that it is rooted?
Correct (10 char)
But if you just want a "simpel" root and have no need for
flashing rom's and stuff, will it work then?

No, you still need android to be rooted with superuser and busybox installed. S-off just gives you permission to write to system and recovery so you can flash roms and a different hboot aka eng bootloader.
I was at least hoping for a temp root so we could at least disable the apps we don't need via titanium backup

Hi all
How do I check if my phone is S-ON or OFF ?
(new to sensation...)
Turn fastboot off in Power settings & power off phone. Then hold volume key & power button at the same time.
Thanks man, and for the quick reply...
I have S-ON, so how do I flash a custom ROM ?
you can't until we get an unlocked bootloader

You can't yet. We have to wait for the bootloader to be unlocked so we can root. HTC said they will send out an update or if one of the devs in XDA figures it out first. We just have to wait patiently.

permroot for S-off MyTouch 4G Slide

How i got perm root on my MT4GS (does not give S-off just permroot of an S-off device)
YOU NEED TO HAVE A S-OFF device!
1)Start off with a fresh install of the TMO 1.28 ROM
2)Used temp root from MT4GSROOT.zip Thanks TeamWin for the temproot method Here is thread for orgnial files)
open MT4GSROOT\ADB (on pc)
Make sure that you have USB debugging turned on (on phone) and drivers installed to PC
Run Fre3voMT4gS.bat (from MT4GSROOT\ADB)
3)check in ternimal ((on phone) need to install from market)) and see if you have root (I got permission denied)
4)ran superonclick with Gingerbreak exploit (thanks CLShortFuse for making this tool) (on pc) - S1C thread
open MT4GSROOT and click on Superoneclick.exe
change exploit to Gingerbreak
hit root
Installed busybox when asked by S1C
Run Su test and looked on phone and Superuser asked for permission
5)Tried opening a app that uses root (root explorer) and SU FC on me
6)go to market and make sure you had latest version Installed (i had an update I needed)
7)Update binary when opening SU for the first time
Allow the SU app SU priviliages (funny I know)
8)Open a root app (root explorer again) and SU asked for permission
Test for permroot
turned off fastboot
deleted a system/app file (in this case htcfmwidget and htcfmwidge.obex) -using the r/w option in root explorer
Rebooted phone and reopened root explorer and looked for removed files and they were not there
None of the tools that I included were made by me they were made by the people I thanked. I just wrote the script for the tools to work. go to their threads and thank them.
Disclaimer I am not responsible for breaking your phone, melting it, or anything that may happen when doing this. Remember this is your choice
I have been able to use Root explorer, Titanium backup, terminal emulator and was able to remove APKs from the system folder that I do not want.
This is awesome!

is it possible to extract the s-off boot-loader from a device with s-off already? My understanding of these procedures is rudimentary at best, but if my understanding is correct, the boot-loader is a specific partition on the device, if someone with an s-off device could copy that image to their computer or just a folder on their sd-card, it should be possible then to share that with others who could then write that image to their boot-loader partion using fastboot. or can you not use fastboot until s-off is achieved? i hate that i always forget these things once i have my device running the way i want it to.

In order to flash the s-off bootloader you would have to have a eng bootloader. to put that on you would need s-off dont you love loop 22
As for s-off it means you can flash what ever you want to your device and it will not check to see if HTC signed it and approved it for you
thanks for that works great!!!!!!!!! also mine is from a retail store same day it came out
is it possible to build a PG59IMG file and pack the S-Off hboot into there?? possibly use HexEdit to make sure the version numbers match so that the phone will think it's just a factory reset/update file??

I think just by making that one hexedit you instantly invalidate the sign on the the zip. Mainly because hashing the new file would give you a different result.
This mechanism actually prevents OTA updates from flashing if the file was changed due to (for example) corruption.
Not entirely sure but I think it's how it works.
That being said I was wondering what would happen if someone with an S-OFF hboot were to dump it and someone with S-ON would simply DD the right partition after achieving temp root.
On any normal computer that process would work. Wondering what secret HTC things happen under the hood though.

Oh ok. Thanks for clarifying that. I thought it would work because last time I did a warranty exchange, I had to return to stock but I had an ENG hboot and I was scared of bricking by using a factory image, so I took the factory image zip, unpacked it, "injected" the original hboot (which I hex edited to match the version number so that it'll take it as an update) and rezipped it and named it PC10IMG.zip. and yea I have a G2 but I want this phone :]

[GUIDE] How To Unroot And Then Reroot With 4.24.651.1

You Must Be Rooted With S-OFF To Do This!
Seeing how there is no way to root 4.24 yet, I thought I would throw a little something together in case anyone needs to unroot before taking their phone into Sprint. This will return your phone to stock with S-ON while leaving a backdoor to reroot with. I have tested this as best I can without actually upgrading my hBoot (I want to keep the eng hboot), but there are no guarantees you won't run into issues. You also must flash the modified PC36IMG before setting S-ON in order for this to work.
While it would be trivial to create a script to automate this process, I wanted to make sure you know exactly what this does so it is easier to re-root. Plus there's no fun in having a script do all the work.
I've included all the files needed to use ADB and Fastboot on Windows, Linux and Macs. They have been renamed to match the operating system (eg. ADB for Windows is adbw, fastboot for Linux is fastbootl) and you may need to set the correct permissions in order to use them.
You will need:
Unrevoked Forever - The latest version of Unrevoked's S-OFF and S-ON tools
E4GUnroot.zip - The modified 4.24.651.1 PC36IMG zip and an unpacked copy of Amon RA's 1.8 recovery
Basic knowledge about ADB and Fastboot

How To Unroot:
Make a Nandroid with the Boot, System and Data partitions along with your .android folder.
Make sure you have Radio S-OFF and not S-OFF from the ENG hBoot. If your bootloader shows SHIP S-OFF you should be good, if it shows ENG S-OFF then you will want to run Unrevoked Forever to make sure S-OFF is set from the radio.
Use ADB to reboot into RUU mode.
Code:
adb reboot oem-78
Once in RUU mode flash the PC36IMG. Be very careful that you do not interrupt it, doing so can easily result in the permanent bricking of your phone.
Code:
fastboot flash zip PC36IMG_4.24.651.1_Rootable.zip
Watch the output and make sure it completes correctly. If you get an error saying something about "remote 90: hboot pre-update" flash it again.
When it's finished flashing reboot and make your way into the Recovery.
Code:
fastboot reboot
--or--
fastboot reboot-bootloader
The recovery may show a green arrow for a few moments, wait for it to turn into the Red Triangle with an Exclamation Mark inside of it. Then push Amon RA's recovery to the phone and bring up the UI.
Code:
adb push amon_ra_1.8-mod /
adb shell "busybox --install /sbin"
adb shell "nohup /sbin/recovery &"
Now that the Recovery is up, use it to flash Unrevoked's S-ON tool.
You are now fully unrooted with S-ON! After you remove your SD card there will be nothing on your phone to show it was rooted.
Click to collapse
How To Root Again:
Reboot into the Recovery and bring up Amon RA's recovery.
Run Unrevoked's S-OFF tool to unlock the NAND.
Flash your Recovery of choice and use it to restore your Nandroid
And that's it! You should be good to go again.

Good job and very educated post.
Just figured it may come in handy to someone, I had to unroot mine a few times to take it in to Sprint and I always did something similar to this to make it easier to reroot. If you wanted too you could even restore your data partition from a nandroid and remove all the root apps, that way your phone is still how you like it just unrooted for the time being.
Thank you sir. Very informative and useful post..
I have a question about this since it seems what your describing may help me. Since I got my E3d I have been playing around with my e4g and I upgraded mt hboot not realizing it would turn s-on. I know I'm still rooted since i have flashed at least 3 custom roms since then. I am on cm7.3 currently. For my case would using the unrevoked s-on/s-off tool to turn s-off work?

[Q] Stock/Signed T-Mo roms to downgrade - Obtaining S-Off

Hello all, just got the MT4GS I have latest boot loader and update previous owner did it right before I purchased.
I thought we should get together and see what works and what doesn't.
I have tried the temp root method and SuperOneClick and the official HTC unlocker to no avail.
I know on some phones its possible to downgrade using some sort of official package or signed update. Is there such thing for our phone?
Threads I used for reference:

Anyone notice the MT4GS Bootloader Unlockable?
Poking at latest OTA update for fun and profit
[TOOL] PERMANENT-ROOT (NEW!) & Temp-Root (v2) for any MT4GS (Windows)
There has to be a way to get this done. I found a signed and stock firmware and instructions

To undo the update/restore the stock firmware that came with the phone:
(Note: this will only work if you are still S-OFF even tho you have the new HBOOT version. If you are S-ON with the new HBOOT, then at this time there is no known way to revert... hopefully we can get the devs. of Revolutionary, etc, to update the root methods. Also, if you want to update just to check it out, make sure to turn S-OFF first if you'd like to give yourself the option to revert later.)
1. Download the stock firmware package from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1178082
2. Rename it PG59IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard.
3. Boot into the bootloader('adb reboot bootloader' or power down the phone then hold volume down + power), let it read the update package, and press 'volume up' to update when prompted.
4. At the end it will prompt you to press Power to reboot. It scared me because when i pressed Power, the screen went off and seemed to not come back on, so i pressed power once again, and it booted into the system.
That's it! Just remember that if you do this, it will of course erase all your data... your phone will be like it was out of the box.

It won't work because the version is too old obviously. These are specially crafted archives with data in the beginning of the archive. You can't modify the android-info.txt because it throws off both winrar and 7zip.
I tried changing the version number in a hex editor. This makes the crc fail. Is there a way to just alter the crc to the new CRC? This way when HBOOT checks for the checksum it will pass and downgrade. I know for Unreal Tournament based games hackers would use a method called bytehacking where they are able to change certain values without upsetting CRC checks. Would something like this be possible?
I found a tool that recovers it and fixes it I have to try flashing in HBOOT but I doubt it will work I'm afraid the important data in the beginning. Maybe if I sign it, it will work?
The latest idea I had was using the OTA update, it contains a firmware.zip what if we modify the contents of firmware.zip with the contents of the stock firmware? You can flash using fastboot (i hope) as it will be formatted as an update and will downgrade the hboot as well.
are you S-ON? i mentioned in that post that it will only work if you happened to have S-OFF from before, which i did. but so far no one has been able to do anything with S-ON and the newest update. have you tried Tacoroot?
The search button is your friend ._., there are 5+ threads that share information and methods none of which work but the people on said threads are putting information and ideas out there.
Sorry noob question, just got the Mt4gs and It's updated to newest, how do I check if I am s-off or s-on? Also in short what does s-off/on mean? Thanks in advance.
Doubleshot on XDA App
Power the phone off with fastboot turned off. Or pull the battery when you power on hold the lower volume key and power simultaneously to boot into hboot. It will tell you S-OFF /S-ON. If you have latest OTA you're most likely S-ON.
S-Off: This term is used when describing the security radio. With S-on only signed ROMs may be flashed, when S-off unsigned ROMs may be flashed IE custom ROMs.

HYUH has also written a version of misc_version that writes to the correct partition for our doubleshot. Link here. Downgrade still doesn't work because when it checks hboot version it realizes its older and will abort.

My hboot is 1.45:0013 so I'm guessing I can't root my phone

correct. the only possible way to root is if your HBOOT happens to be S-OFF, in which case you could downgrade and then root. there is some work being done, but i don't know that anything has quite worked yet.
How do I downgrade software

Are you trying to root and if so just root the old way. I tried it and it works.

Does it day S-ON or S-OFF? If S-ON then you're stuck for now, until one of the tools comes thru.
Lol I'm stuck for now dang that sucks

There are extremely capable people working on it. Team revolutionary are aware of what's going on. Now its just a matter of being patient.

If you see S-Off on the bootloader screen, then you are S-Off, which is the ONLY thing that the Revolutionary method accomplishes. However, if you read the information on the site (the FAQ), it provides the file you need to flash to get root. Once you flash that file, you will have everything you need to start making backups, customizing, and flashing other software. The Revolutionary method is by far one of the easiest and best methods of obtaining S-Off for a device like the Tbolt.
