As much as I appreciate this, I find no way of doing some things in excel.
Can't see a way to format columns or rows,
formulas I presume has to be typed entirely.
I see one toolbar, but find no way to access anything else

The best document editor

Is Documents to Go the best document editor for android? Or is QuickOffice?

For me I found the best document editor is "Polaris Office". Unfortunately until today I could not find the document apk to install it.
Anyu developers here could help?
I need the apk file to install it.
Thanks.
found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045522&highlight=polaris+office
But when I installed it on my Nexus1 it only lets me log in to a Box.net account to see docs I guess.
No GDocs settings, no way to create new documents.
The Google Docs app has been released, which may be a decent, powerful tool one day, but in this first version needs some polish. Has a great scan ability using your camera which, after some improvements, could be the ultimate feature.

Best note app is here : onenote mobile from microsoft for android available

One of the most anticipated app for android from Microsoft is here
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.microsoft.office.onenote
Yes..
Tested on the tablet and it actually works with skydrive. No problem making a note with image and sync it.
One problem: It does not support handwritten notes from my win 7 tablet.
missing so many features
- Does not show handwritten notes.
- Notes made only go to personal web folder and not in the folder that i make a new one
- Selecting fonts and stuff like that are missing
- cannot add files
- no handwritten notes possible.
- Very very basic and disappointed.
I just need textnotes, so that's okay for me. I only need enumeration for hierarchical organization of the text.
I only work on a limited number of projects, so o don't necessarily need to be able to add files on the device, though this option would be nice.
Project notebooks wich i share with skydrive are perfectly synchronized both ways.
This app boosts my productivity ! So I'm kinda satisfied.
thanks a lot
Agree

[Q] Good ebook, epub organizer - ala iBooks or eBooks on Samsung Galaxy Tab

I've been looking for an app which organizes pdfs and epub documents and has a reader in-built.
I know iOS has iBooks and I own Samsung Galaxy Tab which had eBooks app - you can see all the recently opened files and it lets you open them too.
Is there anything similar for Surface? What are you guys using for PDFs?
I've tried PDF Touch, Freda, Overdrive Console etc but haven't found them up to the mark.
Thanks!
PS: I don't see a forum for posting Surface Q/A, so I posted it here.

PDFs open natively and the reader buit into the SAurface is actually pretty good IMO- Annotations, highlights etc. I open large Pdfs from the insurance industry and it does the trick so far..
Regarding a general ebook reader, I am not impressed with anything yet as far as being able to import in my own epubs (as opposed to Kindle and Nook, Kobo, etc which only let you read their conten)t - I have Freda installed and its just so so - It uses the Calibre ebook management system on a desktop Pc which is a hassle, and as far as I can tell there is no way to remove books from Freda once imported in - Not too many features
it seems like the ebook readers are always a hassle on these types of devices (same form my Android) - You always need to have like 3 of them loaded to cover everything if you have your own epubs, and other formats

The inbuilt reader is okay but not many features. I wish I could choose highlight colors.
On my Galaxy Tab, I have ezPDF reader - what I like is that it shows the recently opened file on a bookshelf. I don't care about the skeuomorphism but it would be nice to be able to see bunch of recently opened files.
On a side note, is there some setting where it asks me what program to open the PDF each time I try to open a PDF file? I know how to set the default program but depending on what I'm doing, I like to use different programs.
We should all contact the maker of Mantano Reader to petition for a WinRT port. The premium version is the best pdf/epub reader I have found for any mobile device yet.

There will be a couple of further releases in the next weeks - adding various features (including the one you mention - removing imported ebooks). In the current version, you don't need to use Calibre - you can also use a filesystem/SkyDrive browser, and Freda does register itself as able to open EPUB and FB2 - so you can open them direct from internet/file explorer.
I've posted more info on the Freda development roadmap here.

I have run into this while using your app and it is a great feature! Yours is the best epub reader available for the SurfaceRT, and I will be keeping an eye on it.

Is highlighting supported for epubs?

Well, once the next release passes through Microsoft certification (in the next few days if we are lucky) it will support bookmarks/annotations - so you can select a word, and associate some annotation text with it. Bookmarked words are shown with a diamond-shaped tag, rather than a highlight stripe, though. I have been looking at a feature that would let you select several words or a whole block of text for highlighting, but it's tricky to get right (mainly because the UI for selecting text is complicated).

Thanks for the info.
I'm not sure what kind of use case others have, but for me, highlighting is pretty important. I have PDF and epub versions of the same periodical and the only reason I go to PDF is so that I can highlight text.
Thanks for your effort though - Freda is an awesome app and I'm sure it will get better with your continued effort.

[Q] [office app] most complete one?

Hi,
I'm having some troubles about editing Office files (.doc, .ppt and similar)
I have tried Polaris Office, KIngsoft Office and Office Suite but I'm not satysfied by them, though Office Suite it's the best of this apps.
I work with complex documents files, so I need footer, correct paragraphs, tables, hyperlinks, differents type of effects on words, ecc..
Also, I usually edit files originally created with the standard Word or PowerPoint by Microsoft, so I need a great compatibility.
Have you any advice about which Office app is the most complete?
Thanks
ps. Sorry for my English
I personally like Quickoffice Pro because I think its the most complete. You should try it.

If you move to Quickoffice for Word files:
*header/footer will be view only
*you can follow but not edit hyperlinks hidden behind words (the difference between seeing http://www.... and "click here")
*you should be ok with tables, paragraph formatting, and formatting words (we have most of the basic options covered).
In Point files, our latest release includes the ability to view animations, shadow, and reflection effects, as well as covers all the basics for text mentioned above.
If you really want to know if your files work, you can always submit a ticket here with a sample file or two, and our team will test to make sure that you don't run into any issues.
Hope that helps
Would a VNC-type application work for you? As in Splashtop (I think this is included in Asus stock software: see MyCloud).
When format integrity is the most important thing and I have decent connection throughput, this is what I use. Wireless mouse makes a world of difference. Slow connection will make this frustrating to use, though.
The problems with Quickoffice are with footer/header and hyperlinks, as you said.

I have a decent connection, but I don't know what a VNC-type application is
I have an application called "MyCloud", but don't understand what's its function.
A VNC application allows you to view and control a remote PC via another device. So you would be able to edit your documents as if you were using your actual PC, but on the tablet.
I would recommend that you download Splashtop 2 from the Play store as I find it works better with the tablet and dock. The setup is fairly simple.
