Can I recieve OTA updates with an unlocked bootloader? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Or will that cause issues? I'd like to set it back to complete stock, but when I tried locking it again it wouldn't start up. So then I unlocked it again, and its working fine. However I found in another topic that I need to flash the old software onto it. Is there a guide anywhere that would show me how to flash stock specifically?
Also, when I was trying to flash a new recovery earlier, it wouldn't let me. Is it odd that I could unlock/lock my boot loader in adb, but not flash anything?

Don't, that is Don't relock your bootloader unless you have flashed back to the correct stock images for your Xoom model. There are threads/guides to do that in General and in Development. But why not just try one of the rooted ICS roms like EOS?

Iv have the 604 usa Wifi only Xoom. I adb the stock file back to MZ604_HWI69 I Let it do the stock updates. I can get to 3.1 then i get the Green Android triangle. Try to do factory reset. Get Green android. Im not rooted. Does not matter if it is locked or unlocked it does the same thing. Im getting:
E: cant open /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/misc no such file or directory
E: failed to mount/ cach no such file or directory
E: cant mount cache/recovery/command
So i would say you can to a point. IM stuck at 3.1 with auto updates. Anyone know where i went wrong or how to fix this?

Try using these steps to get back to stock again. I just did it this morning and its working fine.

I just found this to about 30 min. ago.

SBF to 3.2 and it update auto to 3.21 and then update to ICS 4.03 form droid life. Very cool and running with out a problem. Must use a USB flash drive with cord to install 4.03 update. Its just like Galaxy Nexus Phone.

To answe your original question, if you are unlocked and running completely stock software (ie, no root, no nothing), you will be able to receive and apply OTA updates.

[Q] Part-Bootloop

Hello guys, I've got a weird problem. I messed around with my Transformer a bit, rooted etc on 8.4.4.11. CWM isn't working, and I can't even boot into recovery. It just sits at the "Loading recovery kernel...". Anyway, its freezing at the eeePad screen on bootup and doesn't do anything (this has stopped me from reflashing a blob, or Asus OTA updating). I've tried reflashing stock and rooted images quite a few times, but it always does the same thing. Now, I can get around the freeze by going to the hard reset screen and declining, and it boots into Android.
Whats wrong? Bootloader? Has to be something in startup, but I cant figure it out.
Re-flash using NVFlash method, in dev section (and don't forget to put the NVFlash ROM version in the folder)

Nope, that actually made it worse. Anyway, each root that I tried to go through did the exact same thing. Now it doesnt show anything on boot.
Is there some way to completely return it to stock? Just flash an official firmware pack with nvflash and have everything back to the day it was shipped?
EDIT: Fixed it, I had the wrong type of ROM unpacked. Thanks Bud.

How could it make it worse .... ?
What's the error you're getting while NVFlashing ?
For the stock, if you can't NVFlash a rom, you won't be able to flash stock too, as the process is identical

Really screwed up this time...

Well guys, I seem to have really done it this time. I was on 4.1.2 (9.16.6) on my HDMaxx and I was having problems gaining my root access. I used Voodoo to keep root and downgraded (while I was still on 4.1.1) back to 4.0.4 and gained root, then updated all the way back up. When I did the update to 4.1.2, I seemed to have some issues with root again. RootChecker said I have root, but all my root apps said otherwise, and I was unable to update SuperUser due to the fact that it was unable to get root access. I went through the post by Dan Rosenberg (http://www.droid-life.com/2013/04/0...r-hd-running-android-4-1-2-other-devices-too/) and it reported nothing but good news. Here's where the stupidity comes in: I didn't boot back up and test to see if the root was working. I was too excited by seeing that I could (finally) unlock my bootloader. I used the motopocalypse tool, and BAM! No recovery, no rom, no nothing. All I have is a screen that says "WARNING BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED" and if I want, I could get into AP Fastboot mode. All other options (recovery, wipe, etc.) just bring me back to the indefinite screen of the unlocked bootloader. Anyone by any chance know what I could have possibly done? Thank you in advance.

Should probably be in the Q&A section -
But try this..
see if you can mount ADB and flash a custom recovery. You will need to google search or thread search for CWM ro TWRP for the xt926 (vanquish) and see if you can flash it through ADB.
that might get you recovery back and if you have a ROM or something on your SD try that.

Why are you trying to use voodoo to keep root and then downgrade/fastboot to stock? If you are downgrading and already had root on 4.1.1 you could downgrade without root, and even on 4.1.2 rooted and unlocked you just downgrade. You don't have to worry about root. Once the phone is back to stock upgrade to the latest 4.1.2 and then use the root and unlock bootloader if needed.
Is your bootloader already unlocked?
Even if your bootloader is locked you should have no problem rooting even on 4.1.2 with motochopper. And then unlock the bootloader with motopocalypse to be able to downgrade from 4.1.2.otherwose there is no downgrading. Motochopper must be used first if you don't have root or lost root on 4.1.2 in order to use motopocalypse .

I'm not having issues with that stuff anymore. What I am having issues with, Is that my phone is unlocked, no rom, no recovery, etc. All I get is a warning for the unlocked bootloader and AP Fastboot. Everything else in the boot menu doesn't work. I really need to get something figured out. Nothing seems to be working. Look at the above posts for more info on the situation.

I understand your situation and I have read the posts. What I am trying to say is that you did something wrong, and that there is no need to try to preserve root when fastbooting or downgrading with any utility because you will loose root. Your first post is confusing. You say you were on 4.1. 2 then 4.1.1 and downgraded. Was your bootloader unlocked prior to all this? Once your bootloader is unlocked, you can root on any firmware and sbf to factory settings which should remove root also. You need to re root, and to with motochopper it's the easiest. If I were you I would just sbf using matts until 1.20, upgrade all the way to 4.1.2 then root with utility. I don't see how it's not working.
Or sbf 4.1.2 and just root like stated above...

I rooted a while back. Before the 4.1.2 update came out. I was on the latest update (4.1.1) but the only way to root an HDMaxx at that time with 4.1.1 was to go back to the original 4.0.4, root, keep root using voodoo, then upgrade back to 4.1.1 again. This worked fine on 4.1.1. Then, I upgraded to 4.1.2 and I lost root (even using voodoo correctly). I tried to unlock, then wipe the phone and try to do the process over again, but now I am without rom and recovery. Plus, for whatever reason, my phone isn't responding to adb or fastboot commands. It's probably an amateur user error, but it would help if someone could point me in the right direction. My apologies for a bad initial explanation. Again, thank you in advance.

Just in case you overlooked the obvious, have you tried another USB port? My Mac only has one USB 2.0 when I boot it into Windows.
Another problem I have on occasion is that the USB cable just doesn't take for whatever reason. I have to unplug it and plug it back in and try again before anything can be flashed. The phone says its plugged but nothing transfers.
To repeat what's already been said, make sure you've gotten the updated Motorola drivers for Windows.
Make sure the Android SDK is installed and fastboot and adb are added to your PATH in Windows.
If still you have nothing, I only quickly read but I didn't notice that you'de attempted to flash a stock ROM for your carrier or not. It will wipe your data and internal SD, however it seems that whatever the problem is, that if you can get into recovery then something should work.
I'm really sorry that all I can offer is redundant and basic information but sometimes we overlook what's obvious or right in front of us, and good luck with it.
Edit: Sorry, I didn't see the battery low thing. Have you tried a simulated battery pull? Hold volume up and the power button for a bit. You're wanting to feel 10 quick vibrations.

I think I figured out the sad truth. I take back my previous statement about charging. Since my bootloader and recovery image are not functional, in addition to not having a rom, my device is therefore unable to "accept" the charge. I'm sitting down to solder together a factory cable (which forces the device to accept the charge, by going directly into the battery). I found it here: http://droidrazrroot.com/droid-razr-hacks/how-to-make-motorola-factory-cable/

Most people are not so adept nor have the tools readily available to do as you did and make their own factory cable.
That's why we went to the trouble of producing the factory cable adapters so average users could have a safe and inexpensive solution to this problem and never have to worry about it.
It's the best $10 investment you can make for your Motorola device.
Congrats on being resourceful and fixing your phone yourself!

[Q] 9.18.79 Fail No Root Or Stock Recovery

Okay to make this easier to understand Ill start from the beginning. I rooted my phone on june 20th of this year. Everything went smooth. I did a backup of my stock system although I didnt load any ROMs or unlock my bootloader. I tried updating to 9.18.79 and I get about 1/4 of the way through, maybe a 1/3 and it freezes, follwed by the dead droid icon and a reboot. I tried temporarily unrooting my device to install the update and I had the same issue. Then I unrooted my phone and delted the superuser backup and once again, the update failed. Ive tried to do a stock recovery from the boot menu only to get the dead droid icon. One of the other things I noticed is that my backup assistan icon is missing all of a sudden (maybe it was removed as an app Icon like the navigation, I dont know) but I still have backup assistant plus in my apps when I go to system settings. My question at this point would be how do I get this update to fully install? Do I necesarily need the update? Will it hurt jus having 9.16? Is my phone incapable of being saved? Before I get bullied about creating a thread thats already adressed I havent seen anyone in the same situation that Im in. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
If you update you won't be able to unlock your bootloader. So it's not really worth it. Nothing major in the update. If you insist flash the stock firmware back on your phone.

I read you can't unlock the bootloader on 9.16 anyway with verizon. But alright. How could I flash the stock firmware back on? Will I be able to get updates in the future like 4.2 if we ever get it? And now Im trying to root again, In motochopper I dont get the option to run.bat file. It just says run, when I click on it and hit enter It says daemon is running. On my phone it isnt saying I have root at all though.

(Help please) Verizon warning triangle after trying to update to 4.3 from 4.1.2

I'm in need of some serious help here guys. Tonight I tried to update my rooted s3 on 4.1.2 to the new update 4.3. I accepted the download and after the download I installed it. My phone booted into the yellow Verizon triangle telling me it noticed I have unauthorized programs on my phone not authorized by Verizon and to turn the phone off and take it into Verizon. I tried to boot into clockwork recovery and it would not let me and booted back to the yellow Verizon triangle.
I have no idea what to do, did I permanently brick my phone or can I get back to 4.1.2 some how? I would greatly appreciate any information pointing in the direction to fix this.
I managed to recover my phone! I pulled the battery and sim card prior to signing up on xda because I read someone having the same issue on a note 2. Once the battery and sim is removed let it set for a half hour then place the sim and battery back into the phone. Once they were back in the phone press the power button ,it should boot right up as it normally would. I'm not saying there isn't more than one way of fixing this issue but this method worked for me and I thought I would share for those who might experience this yellow triangle notification as well. On a side note it did not successfully updated my phone but returned me back to 4.1.2
You need to be 100% stock to take an OTA (unrooted, stock recovery). The easiest way to get to that state is to ODIN a stock factory image. This will delete your internal storage.
Was your bootloader unlocked prior to trying to update to 4.3? I'm assuming so if you were running CWM recovery.
I actually had the same problem and am trying to fix right now. I tried running rootkeeper before the update, but that obviously didn't work. Anyone know where I can get the 4.1.2 image to flash? Also, do i need to do that "Triangle Away"? My custom binary dL says "Yes (4 counts)."

Triangle Away is free for XDA members. Must be stock rooted to work. Won't work on every rom. May have to odin stock, root run Triangle and then Odin Stock again. Remove tar from MF1 zip to Odin. Once on 4.3 there is no return and no unlock. Can run Saferoot to root. Do not try to unlock or flash custom recovery or device will brick.

Yes my bootloader is unlocked. I think I'm going to postpone the 4.3 update until I hear better reviews. I have seen posts on here where people are having issues after taking the update. I simply did not know what was going on if I had hard bricked my device or not, luckily I did not and was able to get back to 4.1.2

So about 6 months ago i tried to root and unlock phone, i rooted fine but messed up on the unlock. And the phone was stuck in boot loop. anyways i was able with help from here on XDA get it out of boot loop and working. My issue is a couple things.
1. Can it be unlocked (i have read and read and dont believe its possible)
2. It wont do a factory hard reset it errors out and just reboots.
3. I try to do the OTA and it just get the android guy with the red triangle and then reboots.
4. when i hold volume up and power and get the factory reset, normal boot etc options, any i select just reboot phone.
I would like to do 1 of the following things. and would prefer 1.:
1. if possible unlock and install custom rom.
2. Do the OTA update and have a fresh install
3. Do a factory wipe and sell phone.
Please any help would be great, as the phone has gotten super slow and i usualy like to do a factory reset every 4-5 months to wipe it.
thanks
#1= not possible on your build. you can only install safestrap roms which are limited and most commonly found over on razr forum.
to clean it up and go back to stock you could either, use rsd to reflash stock, or grab the one click utility from the dev forum to do the same. the one click utility is the easiest of the 2, just be sure to get the build that matches your system version or newer. you can flash the same version or newer only, trying to flash an older version will just result in a boot loop.

for your build you would need version 1.33 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46269380&postcount=1
1.21 would bootloop because of the locked bootloader.

happy to help, glad you got it fixed.
Hi, I have a question.
I had a hard time getting any of the utilities to work initially. Booting up was just scrambled and broken. Anyway, I used v1.34 and it's made progress. It worked it's way through writing system and such. Now the phone is stuck on a bootloop. The phone cannot make it passed the red M before rebooting.
When the phone is plugged in and on an inescapable bootloop, is it charging? My battery was hovering above empty before the v1.34 utility brought me here.

Are you rooted? If so, that is why.
Did you freeze or remove any apps? If so, that's another reason why.
In either case, you will have to FXZ back to stock, unrooted to take the OTA. However, you WILL lose root and there is no root exploit for Kit Kat unless you have an unlocked bootloader, which you already found out you can't have based on the version your phone was at (9.18.X). And, there is NO way to carry root over the OTA. Voodoo doesn't work with Kit Kat at all, and there is just no other way to keep root on locked bootloaders, period.
So, either hold off on the Kit Kat update and pray someone finds a way to root it for locked bootloaders, or else if you can't wait, then realize you may never see root on this phone again.

My bad for not realizing that.
Are you still getting the dead Andy screen after applying the OTA? If so, then you need to go back into the recovery as you did before and then apply the OTA again. This is a two-step process, especially if you applied the OTA manually rather than taking it automatically.
It's still waiting to continue the update for the OTA. So, go back into recovery and navigate to where you stored the OTA zip file on your external SD card and then apply it again and you should be good to go.

So just to be clear.
I go to settings/aboutphone/system update. It says checking for update. Update Available/ then i hit download, it downloads it. I click install now. Phone reboots and i see the android man, status bar starts going and gets about 1/3 the way and then get the red triangle in the stomach of the android man. and then phone reboots.

At that point when it reboots, it should continue on and you should see the android picture again as it continues on installing. This is the second stage of the install and can take up to 15 minutes to complete.
Are you saying it just keeps rebooting at that point and never completes? If so, then you need to go here and follow SamuriHL's directions to the letter to get you up and running -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/45494-how-to-xt926-upgrade-to-kitkat-ota/

No after the android guy with the red triangle, it just does a complete reboot back into android. and then says update failed.

Were you rooted at any point in time? If so, did you flash back to stock? Just uninstalling root will not work.
Your phone must be completely stock with no evidence of it being modified in order for the OTA to work. Rooting is one thing that will modify it to where an OTA will not take.
I had explained earlier that if you rooted and/or froze/removed any system/stock apps, you must use an FXZ image to put your phone back to stock. The link I supplied you with in that previous post will give you a stock Kit Kat image to flash to your phone. That is what you must do.

the razr utility has been updated since you started this thread, to KK.
just go back to the utility post from before, and you will see the new KK version at the bottom.
use it the same way you used the old one and you will be on stock KK. its the same as taking the ota update.
Hi there:
I've been following this thread, as I'm in a similar situation. I'm pretty sure I'm stuck with either rooted JB or unrooted KK, but just wanted to confirm.
Here's what I have:
-Phone: Razr HD
-System version: 9.18.94.XT926 (VZW US)
-Android: 4.1.2
-Rooted
-Locked bootloader
I'd love some clarifications/confirmations on the following, if anyone has them:
-There is no way to downgrade the system version to an unlockable version (like 9.16). Not even with flashing back to stock everything with the Droid Razr HD Utility.
-There is currently no way to root KK without an unlocked bootloader.
-If I unroot (flash back to stock) and upgrade, I will lose root and likely not get it back.
-The only way for me to currently keep root is to stay on JB.
I'm not interested in custom ROMs, just root.
Thanks in advance.
