Custom rom and Launcher - HTC Inspire 4G

I just installed cyanogen 7 and just got all my apps and stuff back on it. I use Golauncher pro and it seems like they dont work very well together because most my widgets dont work and it seems slower. Does having a launcher defeat the purpose of having a custom rom? Any suggestions as to what to do after flashing a custom rom?

You are using a Custom Rom wich already is using a launcher (ADW Launcher), so I guess that they might not be compatible at the same time. You should read thoroughly the ROM features and changelog and then go to the specific Q&A Forum. Just find wich rom might be working with your launcher. CM7 and Absolution have ADW Launcher...

I'm still confused as to what i'm acutally getting by flashing a custom rom. Will I get better battery? is it supposed to be "snappier?" I'm kind of confused because I feel its the exact same...

If you don't notice the difference between cm7 and stock sense, then you might be better off with a dumbphone. The 2 roms are WORLDS apart.

is it supposed to be quicker? what benefits am i really getting. Cause right now my network doesnt work for some reason and my phone keeps having to force close every 20 seconds. Something doesnt feel right. Also my button at the bottom dont work now either except for the menu button. I dont know whats going on. Also should I be getting better battery life out of this?

As Pirateghost told you...it just depends what you are looking for. I have Sense 3.5 and many other tweaks that I didn't in the Stock rom.
CM7 Has many features from ICS and is absolutely different from a Sense Rom...is faster and simpler. If you don't like the experience of testing custom roms then you should go back to stock.

can anybody recommend me some good custom roms and what each one is good at?

Please stop being lazy and take time to read and educate yourself on what you're doing, I promise it will make all of this soon much easier for you..this will only be said once...there is no best rom,all Rome have bugs, its on you to figure out what you can and cannot live with

Cm7 is built from the Android code without all of the bloat that comes with the Sense based Roms. Typically CMis quicker. I am running Absolution 3.3 which is based on the CM7 builds and it is by far the fastest ROM and best battery life I have gotten on any other ROM and I have tried many of them. I ran Go Launcher when I first got the Inspire and it made the phone so slow and the battery drain was pretty bad too. In fact it is what drove me to Root the phone in the first place.

I doubt go launcher was the main culprit in the battery drain of an unrooted phone...it was probably due to sense more then it was the go launcher ..... case in point I use go launcher on bindroid and absolution and absolution gives me about 6 hours more on one charge

Excellent point. I should have mentioned that it was only on the Sense ROM not ASOP. When I ran Go Launcher after rooting and getting off Sense, it was much better.
On a side note, I noticed you are from Philly. What radio are you using? I am just across the bridge in South Jersey and have been looking for radio options and given your involvement with Aboslution I value your opinion.

Feedback Needed From The Thunderbolt Community

If you recently purchased a Thunderbolt ....
You may be in the same boat as me, looking at rooting. Everyone is talking about gingerbread coming to our phones. I haven't seen an OTA as of yet, but it has leaked. located here->
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1225752
Now,
I know that you can root very easy here->
http://revolutionary.io/
and I would play close attention to this video as it provides detailed instructions ->
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UK_CiB2SYk
**WAIT**
Before you dive in, here comes my question.
If you have done your research, there are alot and I mean ALOT of roms to flash for the thunderbolt.
I would like some feedback as to what rom you have flashed.
This will help anyone new to the thunderbolt party as well as myself.
I have yet to make a decision on rooting or waiting.
Your feedback below please.
Thank you all in advance
And as ALWAYS,
Thank you to all the developers who are working there butts off !
I tried out team bamf first, but then they jumped ship to their own forum. So then droidtheory started releasing roms and jumped to him and haven't looked back.
He has a sense and aosp (cm7) version and also dhacker and xpack have released their own versions based off of droidtheory's work.
xpack's senseless rom is very nice. Has the sense base so gps and nfl network work right out of the gate, but no sense (adw launcher instead) so its fast and smooth.

You can't go wrong with DroidTh3orys ROMS.
Root. Now. That way you can make your choice when/if GB actually comes. You can always go back to stock unrooted. You may not be able to root with the new OTA.
Roms? Like many things they are a personal choice that no one can make for you. Having flashed them all, I can tell you they have improved dramatically since I got my bolt in May. If you choose to root, do yourself a favor and try several. You will find the Rom that suits your taste and needs.

AOSP Based: ShiftAO5P

100% agree with this guy.
Us leaving XDA doesn't change anything about the quality of our roms. Fact is, many of our innovations end up in other roms anyway (ask ihtfp69 and erishasnobattery).
You can find us at teambamf.net, or rootzwiki.com.
There are many roms to choose from out there. Try them all, then decide.
Thank you all for your feedback. I made sure to click the Thank You buttons on all of your comments.
Once again thanks for the quick response. will be flashing later on today.
Im hoping this post may help some new Thunderbolt owners.

**Every phone behaves differently just want to add this before anything.
Multiple reasons, first and foremost my phone behaved the best with ShiftAO5P. I had a very smooth running phone and an amazing battery life with all the bells and whistles turned on. I went from 4 am in the morning to almost 6 in the evening without a charge. I am a moderate to heavy user, my battery does not last that long EVER.
2nd, choices with the rom was amazing multiple governers, mulitple kernels you can try them all till you find the best combo.
3rd, support DT is very active on the forum so answers and issues are resolved very fast.
I have flashed almost every Rom for the TB.
My recs are
Sense: DroidTh3orys Sense Rome
AOSP: CM7 or Omfgb for those who like tweaks. TheRom for those who want a vanilla experience.

Thanks for getting back to me on this. I will have to give ShiftAO5P a try.
I've been running dasBamf Roms for a month now and love them. I am currently on UberBamf PR3. every Tbolt is different, so experiment and see what works best for YOU. After you install each ROM, make a back up of it. That way, if you install one, that you don't like, you can revert.
I like a fast, customizable ROM without all the Sense bloat so I use Liquid Thundersense. I've only had this phone for 5 days so I really have no other Thunderbolt ROM to compare it to (I ran Gingeritis for a couple hours and the stock ROM only long enough to download Gingeritis to the device; I just hate Sense lol). As far as it goes though I've owned five Android devices total and have rooted and ran custom ROMs on all of them. Only way to go IMHO.

Is HTC/ATT still developing for the Inspire?

I'm new to the inspire (just switched from Sprint and the Epic 4g) and was wondering if HTC/ATT was still doing development for the inspire or not? Can we expect any updates to the current version or are they pretty much done?
I know on the Epic they were still pushing ROM's occasionally.
Just wondering what the future might hold or if we are stuck with what we have (other then custom ROM's).
Thanks.

History would suggest that we've gotten everything we will get from ATT. HTC may continue to develop for the Ace, but it will most likely only be released for the DHD. (Desire HD)

if AT&T is still selling this phone in 18 months then yes, per the alliance they made with Google, the Inspire will get Ice Cream Sandwich. At the Last Google I/O At&T was among the companies agreeing to this improved situation, vowing to bring their phones current.

Yeah, I've been trying to find a custom that I like but so far it seems that they all have small "quirks" of some kind or another. Believe it or not my stock is running very very good so I'm reluctant to change.
Was just curious if they would release another base ROM for the inspire. It appears everything new is based from other phones.
Thanks for the info.

That is the norm with US based phones. They get maybe one release from the carrier and the rest are ports from the euro version of the phone as they are supported longer. We have seen the only update from att that we are going to get.

Actually it wasn't about look and feel but performance. Right now my stock (rooted) is running really well believe it or not. Great battery life, great signal, good GPS etc. It seems that most custom ROMs I looked into (based off different phone base) had issues of some sort that people were complaining about. Battery, FC's, GPS etc.
In all honesty I don't really like Sense so I would'nt mind a ROM that didn't have it. Some things I like are, ASOP lockscreen, Battery percent in notification bar, Launcher othere than sense.
Right now I'm using a battery widget and widget locker to change my lock screen. Also using Zeam launcher insted of Sense.

You piqued my interest, actually it was Zel. I started thinking about what is out there, actively being developed, based on US Inspire roms. I took a look over in the Dev section and all I could come up with is ClearDroid.
I think you can still get roms from Pirate based on the ATT gingerbread release and Juicy's TELUS DHD is supposed to be the same hardware as the Inspire, but his ROM is based on the TELUS release.
I have used ClearDroid gingerbread. It's a great ROM and ClearD and his team tenaciously develop and support. It's a little vanilla, compared to some DHD or port based roms, but is better than the ATT approved ROM in every way. It is faster, more stable, prettier and better supported. I always go back to it when I've had my fill of the eye candy. I won't tell you it's the best ROM out there, everyone has different tastes, and we've got great devs doing amazing things with other bases, but you may want to try it before completely writing off custom roms.
It's just my opinion, and worth about as much as that old Pentium 2 in my closet, but i'm throwing it out there anyway.

That's the beautiful thing about Android and this site. You can try a variety of different flavors and combinations and always go back to where you started. You'll never know if you like something or not if you don't try it. Just do a nandroid and test the waters.
The Sense 3 DHD leak is pretty nice and would be a great upgrade for the Inspire but, alas, we'll probably never see an actual Inspire based on this build because AT&T has the final say. AT&T is dragging HTC down like an anchor tied to a sack full of toasters.

Stable ROM for lite Android user (At&t Nexus)

I really hate to start another "best ROM" thread but I need some help from experienced Nexus users. I recently rooted my girls Nexus S in order to get rid of some of the bugs with the stock ROM. I put the latest CM stable on the phone but after a few days she started complaining about random reboots. I'm looking for a stable (stable being the keyword) ROM, with maybe a few added features. Also considering just putting a custom kernel with the stock ROM but once again looking stability. I wish I could just steal her phone for a week and find out for myself but sadly I cannot. Thanks for any suggestions!
oxygen seems to be your best bet. stability, functionality, and great features (like status bar toggles). it's pretty much the gold standard and i've yet to find any fault with it.

If u are looking for a stock looking rom I would say try bugles beast rom. Its stock but with modifications to improve user experience. I've never had issues with his rom no reboots or freezes. It has custom lockscreens and its snappy and smooth.

Root, CWM and CM7

Hey guys,
My girlfriend's Inspire 4G's been having some problems with lags and freezing so I figured I'd just root the thing and put a solid rom on there since she won't be messing with it at all.
As of today, January 5, 2011...what's the easiest way to root and get clockwork on to put a CM7 build on her phone?
First search is your friend. But the ace hack kit is the way to go.
Second rooting might not fix the problem. When I was bone stock I never had issues with lag or freezing so maybe something else might be going on with the phone. Just an idea. I will say running cm is certainly faster for me than compared to the heavier sense, but never to the point of phone freezing. This is just my personal experience

No one can tell you wich the best rom is. That strictly subjective and gotta find it out for yourself. Cm7 is a great Rom but not the only AOSP one. You should read features and changelogs and the try a few before deciding.

What they said.

Total Disappointment

I got to say that even with all of the great development here this phone has been overly disappointing..
This is my Wife's phone I use an SGS II. I was going to keep it stock but she was complaining about it locking up occasionally and poor battery life. So i rooted and have had her try out several roms of several flavors, sense 3.0 and 3.5 gingerbread of all sorts, and different kernels and all.. It seems no matter the combo the general use of the device seem sluggish at times.
Her biggest complaint is how sometimes she needs to pull for the notification bar 3 or 4 times before it will pull down.. Whats crazy is non of these issues are present at first, usually do not show for a few days.
I at first thought it was the set up but after so many mixes of different things i checked that off, then i thought it was an app but i had her go for a few days without installing anything and it eventually still happened..
I have decided it either the device just plain sucks or its the sense garbage clogging it up..
Any good ASOP rom recommendations?
Or any recommendations at all? Maybe someone else who had had issues with this device and who has found happiness could point me in a good rom kernel combo for this POS...
Sorry had to vent.. and any help would be great..
No problems whatsoever on the ROM I'm running. Did you make sure to superwipe in between each ROM flash?

Yes Superwipe is my friend. Honestly It could just be that this device is just not as good as her G2 which she now wants to go back to lmao.. but whatever..

No one else seams to have these problems i get no lag what so ever but if your looking for a good AOSP Gingerbread ROM have you tried Cyanogen Mod 7????? or eve MIUI as far as ICS ROM i like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408351
have you tried swapping/formatting your SD card?
other than that, it sounds like you've tried everything...you may just have a bung handset...your problems are not common
I was having some of the same problems. No matter what Rom/kernel combo I had there were bugs. I went back to stock and voila... Smooth as butter. I guess the updates tmo released really fixed all of the problems I had when I first purchased the sensation. I suggest you try it out.

I have been using sensation for 4+ months now. Yes the stock ROM is buggy but definitely not as bad as you are experiencing. I rooted and install custom ROM after one week stock ROM usage. May be you can try by 1) factory reset if not fixed then 2) format or new memory card.
All Gingerbread based ROM's are pretty good in terms of feature, performance and stability. For starters you can try insertcoin or android revolution HD. I would not recommend ICS based ROM since they are still work in progress kind of mode. Though most of the things will work with ICS ROM, looking at your frustrating experience I would recommend only GB based ROMs.
All The Best!
Faulty handset.
Get it replaced/fixed.
Never have I experienced any of these issues with my Sensation.
I use ARHD 3.6.x since day 1 and it's still as smooth as butter.
I use Daemon controller to take the CPU down to 1GHz.
I have many many apps installed and have nearly filled the internal memory with a few apps on the SD too.
I have removed a few system apps using root. What accounts are you using on the device? I have heard that a sense account can be a bit of a drain on battery and resources.

I'd agree.
All of symptoms "pull for the notification bar 3 or 4 times before it will pull down.. Whats crazy is non of these issues are present at first, usually do not show for a few days. " are VERY similar to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239238
There was another link 150+ pages relating to it but can't that one. Anyway, get it replaced.
I think because her nails are long
I had a lot of sluggishness with stock but now I'm using MIUI and it's really smooth and is better on batt life w/o all that stock bloat nonsense. I don't know why I waited so long to root. Every now and then I have issues pulling the status bar but I figure it's just my finger placement or another app is running a task and hogging the CPU for a sec.

Honestly though with a dual core device you should be able to pull the notification bar down at will.. at least my SGS II has never done this..

This maybe a possibility that she has a faulty touchscreen making it seem to be laggy when infact its not..
Thank you guys for so many responses im going to have her try an ASOP rom like CM7 and see if it helps if not maybe ill get it replaced..
My sensation is sluggish on the stock rom. It operates very smooth on cm7 alpha #10 and the latest miui which i am sporting at the moment. Do u use titanium backup at all in her phone. Ive read some shiz bout TB.

I got the same problem. Takes couple tries to unlock the phone, some on-screen keyboard keys are not responding, notification bar not coming down. It was very annoying and frustrating. But all the problems are gone once I installed CM7/MIUI.

Well shes not home from work yet and im going to class tonight, but I will be putting her on CM7 especially after reading your comment.
I think your phone (hardware) is defected. Get a replacement. I run many of the custom ROM for the past few months and none of them have the problem you described. Good luck.

I really think that you guys are just used to a less than smooth experience. and i don't mean this in a bad way. I have not only been exposed to my wife's Sensation but the weird dude upstairs Sensation >though its stock< is slow and choppy and has horrible battery life as well.. just saying its bad when when you take her G2 running a sense 3.0 rom and put it next to the Sensation running a similar rom and the older device is running it better..
OK, So after trying out the CM7 build and now Hypersensation I am going to say even without waiting <but the next few days will tell> sense is what really hinders this phones performance. Totally 1000% more responsive than ANY Sense rom i have had on this device.. still not up to par where i feel it should be but much nicer..
Ok if shes still in cm7 just leave it dont overclock it. Give it a few charges to settle. Everything should work smooth except the video camera. Glad i could help u.

If she doesnt like cm7 give the latest miui a go. Everything works great. Only bug ive noticed is the wifi likes to turn on by itself once in awhile so keep an eye on it if u try miui. Ive came over from a nexus s and comparing both phones id say the sensation is a hair better plus the build quality is much much better.
