I need to upgrade my current phone and I was wondering what any of you recommended if you have any experience with the windows phone 7 phones vs. their android models. I'm 16, I text a lott it's probably what I use my phone for most and swype is a godsend for me, but I need an mp3 player really badly and I would like my phone to function as one as well, also I want to get a nice case for it so that if I drop it a few times it doesn't break. I tested out the captivate for a week and it was amazing, but I'm into changing the roms and all that fancy stuff so if I did get a windows phone 7 do they have the ability to put android on it and vise-versa, is windows mobile 7 laggy like windows mobil 6.5 on my old fuze?
Some models I'm specifically looking at are the HTC Surround (win mo7), Samsung Captivate, Samsung Focus, LG quantam.
I can get each phone for about $150 so price isn't really an issue.
Guess it really depends... Have you been naughty or nice this year?
If you absolutely have to have swype, go for the captivate. WP7 doesn't have it and there's no indication that it will in the future as of yet. It is really easy to type on the Focus's screen (doing it right now), but if you really like swype, that's where you're at.
The Zune software in WP7 is great for playing mp3's. Don't really know what Android has, but I can say that the Zune software is nice.
No, WP7 hasn't been cracked open to flash custom roms, or run Android. If you really wanna do things like that, go for the captivate. However, as ardent a flasher as I have been with my Tilt2, it was all to get it to run right. WP7 is effortlessly fast right out of the box. The captivate needs to be tweaked to remove the lag and stutters. There is no lag on my Focus.
Merry Christmas!

I'm going to the AT&T store today, I'll probably test demo both of the samsungs and make my decision in there.
go for an iphone 4. at&t and iphone 4 works well together.

I'd go for a Focus. The new Motorola phone looks really nice too and its cheaper, mid-pack. I forget what it's called though.
Go for samsung captivate.
I have both an iphone 4, and a captivate.
If you want something thats going to work perfect out of the box get the iphone 4 and an ottorbox case.
If you want a real phone, get the captivate.

MP3/Music: The 5.1 stereo in the built in music player sounds really good. The music player that comes with the stock Captivate is comparable to any of the music player apps you'll find.
For texting, you'll probably want to install SMS Popup, or Handscent.
It takes great pictures and video - BUT has no built in flash.
Mine is rooted, OCLF lag fix, and hacked for sideloading apps. Also Titanium Backup on a rooted device will allow you to remove the AT&T bloatware. (I recommend freezing apps for a week before removing them - just in case other apps are dependent on them)
I really love my Captivate. I might be a lucky one because I've never had any GPS lock problem, random shutdown problem etc that many others have complained about. Mine runs EXCELLENT!
My question is Why are you going for AT & T specifically? Why not Verizon or any other?

That's the same price my little brother told me they are in stores. That price I listed was for online. Either way, lot of phone for that price I'd say.
And I also noticed that ATT sells refurbs for $10, but are out of stock.
Call At&t 611. They have different stock than the website and usually have the phone you want when the website sells out. Prices may be.different though.

best phone I've ever owned.
Im about to buy a G2x from someone on craigslist for the low price of $280. Ive been reading the forums all day and it seems like i may just be buying myself some trouble. Im planning on flashing CM7 as i did on all my 3 phones i own right now. WHat should i expect and not expect? Is the phone even worth $280 considering all the issues?
CM7 works perfectly fine for me with the stock kernel. I have absolutelt no problems other than the torch app sometimes acting up. I would nab that deal in a heartbeat. I love my phone. Although it seems as if some phones on weird and slight occasion dont flash properly or just plain have a weird problem with APN's. And it is known that some G2X's dont handle overclocking and undervolting as well as others. I have a theory that alot of the nards that are having major problems all the time are doing something wrong or getting a bad download or something along the lines of that. Good luck and cheers!
i have had no problems with reboots whatsoever. also, if you read a little more you would see that gingerbread has been released by LG. Even though it may not be official a lot of users is reporting positive reviews so far. it's only a matter of time before we see custom roms using this base and our phones will be that much better.
As long as the hardware seems in good working order then yes it's a great buy.
its incredible that the price has gone up so much. i got mine for $99 + free activation! but you should be able to get it for $240. the gingerbread upgrade will fix a lot of issues and cyanogenmod with the latest drivers for gingerbread will take it the rest of the way. If I were you, I would wait until the price comes down but if you have $ to spend then go for it.

just go to them and ask them to price match. I had to try it with three different stores around the area and one of them priced matched so you might have to ask around.
At $280 buy it. Now that GB is out, it going to go up in price when people start catching on, so far update has fix a few issues.
Yea great buy considering the phone sells for $499 plus tax whoever selling it for $280 is either an idiot or brilliant because he selling u a ****ed up phone

What? You can get G2x's for even lower than that on craigslist. It's not that he's selling a broken phone. It just depends on the person. I've seen brand new iphone's go for less than that. It's that some people just don't care to do their research especially if they got the phone on contact... They sell the phone for less than what they paid on contact..

Also looking into a used G2x. What is one suppose to look for in terms of "problems"?
Long story short: broke my Sidekick, need a new phone.
the only phones I'm interested in is another Sidekick ($380), or a mytouch 4g slide (at least $500). problem is, even though my contract has run only a few months, it's actually cheaper to pay the cancellation fee (max $200) and switch to another provider than to buy a new phone unsubsidized, which afaik, is all t-mobile will allow. (kind of a screwed up business model, huh?)
so since its almost black friday in 6 hours or so,, does anyone know of a good sale on either Mytouch 4g slide, or even the Sidekick?
May want to check t mobiles website. You can always buy a refurbished phone as well.

thanks for the suggestions guys, but the only good deal I found at all was for the Samsung Transform Ultra, on Boost Mobile. so I went for that, I think I'll be pretty happy to finally have real stock android rather than a Sense/Touchwiz infection.
I did look for deals on tmobile phones, but they were all for new contracts and upgrades ONLY. I even got on the customer service line twice and explained to them that 1. I could not keep using the broken phone, and 2. the ONLY adequate replacements are twice the cost of cancelling; they did not seem to have a contingency for this. oh well, their loss. my new phone, of course, will have a protection plan, but still, Tmobile really should rethink their replacement system.

Just sell your cell phone contract to a third party.
well now that i'm on Boost, I've been noticing that If I started a new contract with Tmobile under the current black friday weekend deals, I could get this or several other phones free and then actually recoup some of the money I just spent, provided I return the Boost phone I just bought. so:
in general, how good is this phone? I noticed it seemed smooth and lagless in store, but of course that's just a store model without a bunch of additional apps from the market. I'm mostly wondering if Sense causes problems at all regarding compatibility with any apps, or stability problems that wouldn't be expected to happen on a stock 2.3 rom. I have a stock 2.3 phone now, so that could be a risky change; however, this phone I have is only $230 new, single core, and is known for a screen sensitivity problem that may get worse on my handset, but may not.
also, could I expect any problems or side effects from rooting? one of my goals in that, if I get the MT4GS, will be to quickly turn the "genius" button into a search button. that cause problems for anyone? I did the same thing on the Sidekick, and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. but it may have just been that particular phone.

The other day i saw an infuse that sold higher than others that had Miui running on it. He had a video link on it showing how the interface is. My humble two cents says unrooted official gb release. I say this because the buyer starts with a known quantity, the unrooted phone. They are more likely to buy with confidence if they believe the device is pristine and not running some haxored software.
I would also offer to root the device for an additional small fee should the purchaser wish.
Again, just my humble two cents, the call is ultimately yours.

I was thinking about the S3 but I decided I don't want town any phone with an Amoled display. The screens don't last long. That's exactly why HTC stopped making phones with Amoled. I'll stick to the longer more durable proven IPS displays. Samsung's answer is to make a Pentile RGBG display to offset the loss in colors over time and that's the best they can do right now. Amoled technology just isn't there yet. I'll wait until they can get all of the colors to be at least at 50,000 hours of operation until then Amoled is a no go.

Just sold one of my g2xs and now have a rooted HTC one s with jb 4.1.1 ROM. I like the g2x, never had any of the problems others had, and I prefer the gb UI to the jb UI. Also the voice search worked a lot better on the g2x, and the g2x is smaller. But I give up on the g2x ever getting jb, even though it's basically capable, and the upgrade to jb makes for a tremendous improvement in user satisfaction as related to speed and smoothness. LG has effectively cheated is out of a year more of use of our g2xs unless we are willing to put up with the maddening stuttering of the pre-jb Android, which comes off as a kluge compared to jb.
But beyond the improvement in speed and smoothness, every iteration of Android since gb has been a step downward in usability. The Android UI is now a make-work project for designers at Google and while it might look better, it's become harder and less intuitive to use. Leave well alone, for goodness' sake.
The One s is about as big a phone as is comfortable for me, and much thinner and lighter than the g2x. It looks like a skinny adolescent Nexus One. I had to take some shears to my SIM card, and it doesn't have an interchangeable battery or SD card, don't care about the battery but would like to have a SD card. The One s was about $100 less than a Nexus 4, and was available now. Haven't seen any problems with the AOKP jb ROM.
The speed of this phone plus the accessibility of TMO's 41Mbps HSPA+ network makes differences in browser speed very noticeable. That plus the impossibility of seeing bookmarks in list form in the jb browser means I'm now using Dolphin and Maxthon. The bookmarks thing is another fail of Google trying for what it thinks is good design. The apps drawer also now swipes sideways, what for?, and the launcher functionality in general. Including the handling of apps and widgets, has become very awkward. Thank goodness for nova and launcher pro.
I reckon it'll be a lot harder to get reliable updates for my rooted one s than for the Nexus 4 but the speed of the one s with 4.1.1 is very satisfying and the UI changes Google is now making are making the experience worse. So I have no incentive to update beyond my jb version, so no incentive to get a Nexus 4.
End of rant.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
Well I guess Google can't please everyone. Personally, I dislike GB and everything before it. JB is such a huge improvement that I prefer the broken JB ROMs to the fully functional GB ROMs.
I have found nothing unintuitive about the operating system so far. I've always been able to figure out how to do something by just doing what makes sense to me. I'm not a big user of bookmarks, mostly because nowadays the predictive URL history is good enough to make opening bookmarks slower than just typing a few letters into the URL bar and pressing enter. However, I don't mean to say they're completely useless; I just don't use them. In any case, Android was made in such a way that you have access to different browsers and can integrate them as if they're the native browser, so that problem has a solution. With the app drawer, sideways is much more consistent. You only ever access the app drawer from the home screen, which scrolls sideways, so it only makes sense to not make the user have to start scrolling a different way.
I don't intend for this post to say, "your opinion is wrong!" so don't take it that way. I just wanted to point out it's kind of unfair to hate on Google and call it their fault just because you don't like something. JB has been called the best thing to happen to Android by almost everyone I've talked to about it, so I think it's safe to say it's just personal preference that you don't like it.
To each his own
Nexus 4 would've been the way to go. Battery is lasting just as long as it was with my G2x... Around 15 - 16 hours with decent usage. (Lots of Facebook, XDA, browsing with Chrome, some Instagram, and 200+ sms messages.)

Wow nice what condition was it in? Ida del lime when this phone gets cm10 (to raise price a bit) or when I save enough for n4 . Problem is mind is kinda knicked. I bought it for 115 in June so I'll be happy with 100... if it sells at how much you sold it for then I'll be ecstatic lol

In mint condition. No scratches or blemishes what so ever, and to me that is amazing since its been a love and hate relationship with it. I felt like I wanted to throw it somtimes, lol! I dislike Gingerbread, but for other people its fine. I just want a phone with ICS fully working at least. I'm eyeing that L9. I was thinking about the Nexus 4 but too many people complaining about battery life. The L9's battery lasts all day with heavy use. The lack of an SD slot on the Nexus 4 doesn't help in its favor either.
Don't get me wrong, in some ways I'll miss my G2x. Sadly it's a good phone that LG left behind without an ICS update. It's a constant reminder that I'd like to forget.
Im curious about the phablet note 2...any tmobile peps notice they are now having everyone pay nearly full price for the phones on a value plan or $20 higher if you choose classic plan...what's up with that? Old upgrade procedure was when it was time to upgrade u got full discounted phone when renewing 2 yr agreement? Or am I missing something...

I got mine for 200 with a 100 mail in rebate. Plus $50 gift card for a new line.
My bill is only 20 more than my 30 dollar unlimited plan and I actually have minutes now.
I sold my G2x for $120 cash, I got it for $150 back in June 2011 so it wasn't a huge loss.

Stay away from AMOLED phones. Why buy a phone with a display that will decay over time? LCD technology is well proven and mature, no screen decay and burn in. The color blue on an AMOLED display still suffers from the fastest decay. 12,000 hours or so. I say F-That! AMOLED is just not ready for consumer use yet. I shudder to think of anyone getting a AMOLED TV as well. If you want somthing that lasts stay LCD/IPS in a phone. Stay away from AMOLED devices right now.
im buying a SIM unlocked Galaxy Nexus for 280 with 2 spare batteries. good deal?

I would just save the cash for a new n4
Yeah I thought so. I was offered 300 for a Toshiba laptop that's got a really nice body and a 3.8 core 2 duo. Cheaper than an Asus transformer
