Contacts problems getting me crazy. - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hello guys, i don't always ask in this topic, but when i do i hope it solves my problem
So, i'm a big flashing addicts and every time i change the ROM, even if i don't sync my contacts with Google, i have troubles.
But the big, BIG trouble came with Android 4.0.
I restore contact file from my sdcard with 179 contacts. I don't sync ANYTHING.
After a little time => 303 contacts with duplicates for NO reason.
So there is my idea, i will delete ALL contacts from EVERYWHERE even in gmail.
And i make a .vcf file with all my contacts i want to use.
But the fact is making a list of contacts on the phone is f*ckin annoying. I want to create a .vcf on my computer. Is there any way to do that ?
TL;DR Contacts doing weird stuff, anyway to make a .vcf file from computer ?
Thanks for all guys

Lost contacts after copying to SIM card...how to restore?

Hi,
I've got a problem and I hope someone can help me out here! I've tried several searches, and remedies, but can't find the "helping hand" I need.
I have an HTC Vogue, AKA P3450.
Windows Mobile 6, ROM version 1.11.404.1G NLD (dutch version)
What was I trying to do?
I bought an android phone and wanted to migrate my contacts to the android phone.
Outlook
So I opened Outlook, deleted all calendar entries, contacts etc. and synchronized. I figured that since Outlook was empty, all data from my phone would be copied to Outlook. No such luck: only a few deleted call histories were put in Outlook. Nothing else.
Copying contacts to SIM card
So then I copied my contacts to my SIM-card. I knew it can only hold 50 contacts with limited info. I wanted to put 50 at a time on my SIM, then put SIM in new phone, copy the contacts and start again with the next 50.
Problem
But now, I can't find my original contacts anymore! All I have are the 50 that I copied to my SIM, but they are not actually ON the SIM. The icon before each name shows they are on my phone.
Also, when I put the SIM card in my new phone, there are no contacts whatsoever.
Does anyone know if I still have the contacts, but I'm looking at a selection of some kind? (All filters are off.)
Remedies
I installed PPCPimBackup to at least save my pim.vol file. This was after the copying-to-SIM. So I have that file. No idea if it only has 50 or all contacts.
I also installed a trial of SpbBackup to view the pim.vol file, but I cannot see the file in SpbBackup, so I can't check if all my contact are in there.
I am at a loss here, can someone help me out? I would really appreciate it!
(PS: Sorry for long post, wanted to make sure all info was in there.)
Damn
I'll ask around for ya.
Nobody has any idea?

Finally figured out how to add to "groups"in contacts

I searched for an answer a few days ago, and didn't find one. I kind of figured out how to do it so I'd figure I'd share with others who didn't know.
I've read how everyone seemed to be pretty frustrated with the groups tab in our contacts and I shared the same frustration because I like to send mass text messages to my employees...
The groups tab only allowed you to add people from your phone memory, and won't let you pull from synced accounts like fb Gmail myspace corporate accts etc.
Like most people on here.... Most of your contacts were synced to your phones... Meaning... You had no contacts in the phone's memory.
so.... Fooling around with my phone tonight, I tried to find a solution...
I found one! Kind of...
When in your contacts.... Hit the menu key, and click on export contacts (to sd).
Once exported to the sd card, click on menu again and click import contacts (from sd).
Be careful not to interrupt the phone as is imports your contacts, or you'll do what I did and stop it halfway and have to do it all over again, causing duplicate phone entries (lots of clutter).
The phone automatically linked most (probably 90%) of the imported contacts with the existing ones.
Now go back to the groups tab, add a group, and add members to the group (now that all of your contacts are now in the phone's memory).
Now for the "kind of" part of my post....
When in the messaging app... When sending a new Group text mssg, Click on groups.... It takes about 8 seconds (seemed like forever, I thought my phone froze) to load the groups... Then when you select the group, you have to individually select the contacts within the group....
Talk about time consuming!
I was hoping that when I clicked on the group, that it would at least automatically select everyone within that group.
So.... Now I gotta figure out how to send a group text with not so many clicks and in a timely manner...
Hey this is great but unfortunately I had my import interrupted part way through also and not all contacts came through. What did you do to clean up after you imported a 2nd time??
You can also use Samsung Kies.i had a100 or so contacts synced with Exchange. I installed Kies. I then synced my contacts to Outlook and back to my phone (errr, something like that). Anyways, it did as you said and linked my contacts, but I went one step further. I then removed my Exchange account to clearall the duplicate contacts, and then setup my Exchange account again without syncing contacts. I hardly every add contacts via Outlook. Usually always done straight to the phone so this works for me as long as I sync every few months.

i shared the same fustration...
hahaha... all i did was... do the import process all over again
thus creating about 500 duplicates! what a pain!
luckily, the phone automatically links duplicate names...
it just gets really cluttered when you have gmail, fb, myspace, corporate, and phone entries...
the worst part is... the max each person can be linked is w/ 5 accounts...
so when i imported 1 and a half times, i had a few duplicate entries because it exceeded the 5 links/contact.
what a pain... i went through one by one to clean it up... im dooing a letter a day...

Contact edits in phone do not update back to web

Hey,
I'm using Sergio's CoreDroid 1.5 on my HD2 and I've had this problem in all of the previous Android ROMs that I have used, but there are a good number of ppl who have had no problem with the same builds. Searching Google also does not turn up any suitable answer.
All the contacts in my phone are saved under Google, so whenever I make any updates to my Google Contacts on the web it is sync'd fine to my Phone. On the other hand if I edit any of my contacts on the phone (like adding an extra number or email address or change the name) they are never Sync'd back to Google Contacts on the web... instead it ends up deleting the new info from my phone when it syncs from the web!! Same is the case if I change the primary number for a contact (in case the person has two numbers in his contact) it reverts back to the original choice!
Making new contacts has a mind of its own.. Mostly it does sync back the new contact info to Google contacts, but sometimes it does not.. and the new contact is deleted because no such info exists under Google Contacts. I don't have any proof but I think it only syncs info back to Google if I choose specific groups for the newly created contact.
I have checked every setting in my phone but did not find anything which shows that my phone does not have privileges to edit contacts on my phone and reflect changes back to the web. Neither is there any setting in my Google Contacts which does not let me edit changes to Contacts from my phone.
Does any one else have this problem? My problem does not lie in a bad flash or anything.. as I have already made a lot of fresh flashes but nothing seems to work!
UPDATE: I backed up all my contacts in Gmail to a csv file, and then deleted all the contacts. I then imported all the contacts back to my Gmail contacts. Up till now all the contacts that I edit remain that way, and also reflect the changes back to Gmail contacts. I guess it was a problem with Google or something, cuz when I made all my contact lists last year they were made on Gmail and after that none would update when I changed anything on my phone, as I have already pointed out. But now all work as they are supposed to. You can also backup contacts on your phone and delete from the phone but it is not recommended as the phone backup does not remember the group divisions. So your best bet is to use Gmail as it will preserve the groupings. Also after backing up remember to delete the contacts from Gmail and also from your phone and then import back into Gmail, otherwise it will make a mess of making double contacts. Do let me know if this worked for you.

[Q] SMS backup/restore/manage/duplicates/online sync etc.

Hello, dear Forum.
You'll probably say that this question was asked and answered a million times, but i couldn't manage to find the write answer, so I ask:
Where do SMS-s go, when they are being backed up by android/google?
I'm using a HTC Desire, and i play a lot whit different roms (like everyone here I guess). I use MyBackup Root to backup some stuff including SMS-s, but I can see that when my phone is freshly flashed, it automatically starts downloading contacts and messages. I found where the contacts are - in google contacts. But where are the messages stored in google? I get a lot of duplicates and I'd like to go and delete all backed up messages from google and continue using only MyBackup Root.
So if anyone can point me to the right direction, I'll be most grateful.
P.S. pls don't post the noob movie from youtube )
I used this programm for backing up my contacts, sms, ...
http://www.fjsoft.at/en/downloads.php
You need the app from android market too^^
Maybe it will help you. I think there is a google sync too, so mybe you can erase your duplicates.

Thank You a lot for the app! But I was really interested if someone knew where are the backed up sms-s and can they be managed (viewed, deleted, copied etc.) like the contacts in google contacts.
I think I found the source of the duplicated messages (and contacts). I think it's the HTC Sence.com. It keeps my messages on the site, and my contacts. Stupid thing is that I can not do a "Select All>Delete" Usually I have around 270 contacts. Over there i have 888 contacts and my messages have 3-4 copies each.

Phone will not sync with Google Contacts

HI. I'm guessing this has been discussed before, but I can't find a good answer to my problem. I got the Galaxy S7 on April 1, and my Contacts have failed to sync ever since. I have 1,141 contacts in Google. Currently, only 169 of them appear on my phone, and I lose contacts on my phone... daily. I have tried everything on the phone itself, followed the advice on several advice forums, removed Gmail, undid and redid sync settings multiple 100 times... cleared cache, blah, blah, blah... and after visiting the AT&T store yesterday for help, things are only worse. Contacts that I've had in various phones and synced back/forth for nearly 20 years have disappeared. I have some faith because everybody still exists in Google on my laptop and I've gotta believe there's a way to get them to appear on my phone. But... this is driving me crazy! Please help!
I had a similar problem the other day, after a strange bug that mixed up all my contacts numbers, I tried syncing and it refused, only way I could get it to sync was to manually delete all contacts on the phone
Problem then was when it synced, it synced Phone > Gmail, so it deleted all my Gmail contacts too, luckily I had exported them all to .CSV first
Imported them back into Gmail, and the phone then synced properly
So first of all, if you are going to try this, Export your Gmail contacts from contacts.google.com first because it is likely going to do the same thing as mine
Other options is to import them from gmail to outlook, and install the outlook app, that seems to sync contacts fine to the S7
Google Contact Sync Issues
So, I have exported all in Google to a CSV. However, the contacts I CAN see on my phone are not in the exported file (this is so F*&ked up)... I exported them to the SIM, but... do you supposed I can import them from the SIM to Contacts, if I delete all Contacts from the phone now?
I wonder if there's a conflict between Samsung Cloud storage and Google?
What do I do next?
Sounds like contacts you have added since the sync failed, have only been stored on he phone
If you long press one of you contacts on the phone, the hit the "Select all" button at the top left, you should see a "Share" option on the top right
Share it to your email, it'll generate a .VCF file that you should be able to import back in once things are sorted
Google v Samsung Cloud
I was able to restore 1271 contacts (more than show in Google on the desktop) by changing a setting in the Samsung Cloud app: see 2 screenshots, below. I've literally been battling this for 7 months now; canNOT believe I did it just now. There's a battle between the clouds; seems like something Samsung should resolve. Grrr.

Pleased you got it sorted, I disabled the Samsung cloud sync completely and still had no luck so I guess it was a different problem for me
Anyway, always good to have an Exported backup of your contacts for when things go wrong
