[Q] Can't get into CWM - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

This phone is giving me nothing but troubles as I attempt to install a new rom. I finally got Stock KG4 gingerbread installed and then rooted it, but now I can't get it to boot up into CWM. I have the update.zip on the sd card, but when I boot into recovery it goes straight to stock. When applying the update.zip from there, I just get a signature verification failed error.

Flash Dr. Honks KJ1 kernel with Odin then try installing your rom thru CWM thats the easiest way I can think of .

thats the thread since CWM isnt working for you do it through Odin

That method is for Froyo only. You can flash drhonk's KG4 kernel that has cwm/root/voodoo lagfix or use one of bhundven's one clicks. I suggest the SMS KJ6 (beta2d) Kernel Stock Rom with Bootloaders one-click as it'll get you on the KJ6 platform with a KJ6 based kernel with CWM/root/voodoo lagfix.

[q] [q&a] !!devs!! I need advice on what to do!!

ok...i have a semi-bricked phone.. i mean semi-bricked because it's functional, but I can't seem to restore from my backups or flash other Roms in CWM recovery.
so, the story goes..it's a long story but please read!! i am in dire need of help!
I was on the latest Infused V2, and have previously tried CM7, S7, hellraised Roms, etc.
so I was kinda experienced in switching back and forth between Roms from CWM.
Yesterday I felt like trying bigfau's port of DlevROM 5.0, which i managed to flash successfully. I made a backup of my infused ROM. DlevROM was missing support for my language so I decided to switch back to infused. but then i remembered MIUI, which I never had tried before.
so I flashed MIUI successfully and played around with it. everything was working but i just didn't like MIUI, so i wanted to restore my backup that i had made earlier that day.
Now.. I had restored previously many times so I thought I knew what I was doing..
when i booted into recovery from MIUI, it was blue. then i remembered from my recovery from CM7 to Infused that I need to be on the same recovery (aka RED) as the one i made the back up in. So i booted back into MIUI, downloaded SGS kernel flasher, then flashed bedwa's Infusion.
I then booted into recovery and i was in RED CWM!
So i proceeded to restore my backup.
it checked md5 sum, it then went on to restore system. I thought it was going smoothly until it started to restore data. then it failed.
here is what CWM says.
Checking MD5 sums...
Restoring system...
Restoring data...
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(File exists)
Error mounting /data/!
Skipping format...
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(File exists)
Can't mound /data/!
yeah.. i don't know where I went wrong.. I've never encountered a problem with restoring from CWM..
I only had MIUI, an older version of Infused V2, and S7 in my sdcard so i tried to flash infused v2 and s7. neither worked. i mean they flashed, but i kept on going into a samsung logo bootloop...
so i re-flashed MIUI... so i'm on MIUI right now.. which i don't like =((
i'm only planning on keeping it until someone gives me a solution!!
I've asked for help previously and all I got was a "sorry, use ODIN to stock"
I've never used ODIN to go back to stock before so I don't know how to do it...
I've read up on the ODIN threads but most seemed to have problems with it...
Would Odin to stock (not gtg's ultimate unbrick) give me root and modded 3e? what exactly is it going to wipe? pictures?
thanks for your help... please help... i really don't like MIUI... i want to go back to Infused V2... or DlevROM once bigfau puts in the language support!
please help

Use this
This would give you root and modded 3e. Odin would wipe EVERYTHING
Just follow the instructions on the page and you should be fine. I've done it a couple times.
Don't worry too much. Its not bricked or anything like that.
Reboot in recovery, and flash the infused ROM that's on ur phone. This should work.
Thumb rule: When moving between ROMs, install the ROM clean, and then restore ur backup (of the same ROM) on top of it. It could be a disaster restoring backup of a different ROM.
Just fyi, I had the same problem trying to go back from MIUI... I've used the ODIN/Root+3e on numerous occasions to basically start over BUT it keeps all my files like pics, music, contacts etc. so don't be intimidated by it..it works. Once you've done that you can re-flash S7, V2 or whatever you want.
Make sure you've got your drivers installed (download samsung kies to do so) and when you open Odin, you right click and run as administrator then follow the instructions.
ok, thanks guys! I will give both a try! =)
Another Solution:
1. Use GTG ultimate unbrick with PIT file to restore partitions. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD GTG ULTIMATE UNBRICK FOR ODIN.
2. Flash community kernel v8 in Odin in order to root + clockwork mod. (Put the downloaded file in the PDA slot of odin)CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD COMMUNITY KERNEL FOR ODIN.
3. Flash whatever rom you want to use.
4. Restore your backup for that rom.
5. Enjoy.

question,
since i'm in blue recovery right now (i'm on MIUI for the time being)
would I have to flash red CWM before flashing Infused V2? or can i just flash it from blue recovery??
thanks~

ok guys..
i just tried GTG's odin back to stock (not ultimate unbrick)
computer recognized my phone,
folllowed every step to a TEE,
and then the phone rebooted itself and i saw the ATT bootscreen, so i was in a relief.
then after the att bootscreen the screen just went blank.... dark... pitch dark.. and nothing seems to work...
so i downloaded GTG's ultimate unbrick, and followed the instructions to a TEE and still the phone screen turns black right after the att bootscreen...
ok.. so what do i do now..??
Edit 1: So I booted into stock blue recovery, deleted all user data, and rebooted and it workedd!! yay~~ now push the community kernel and restore? right?

Kies Failure

After painstaking deliberation, they had reached the decision to eat gingerbread. Cautious and deliberate by nature, they opted to install stock 2.3.6 using Kies, presumably the safest choice. KB5 had been having a hard time connecting to the pc via usb with debugging active - no choice was given how to connect to pc, and Kies was not recognizing the phone. Finally bypassing the usb hub allowed Kies to recognize the device, and after a long download, a usb error message flashed up and process failed. Removed phone battery and reboot, all is well but SCREW KIES
Odin from now on
Probably the most creative thing I've seen here all night. Kudos to you my friend!

Downloaded the stock ODIN version of GB 2.3.6 KJ6 .tar here to flash via ODIN but phone will not connect via usb at all now. I think I reverted it's firmware back to the paleolithic era somehow. Could someone share the link the newest ODIN? I have v1.85 and I think also 4.03?
Unless anyone has any ideas, looks like CWM may be my only chance. How can I upgrade firmware if the method used to update is inoperable? Whenever I go into download mode it will not connect with USB. Instead windows says
"USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached tho this compter has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. For help with this problem, click here."
Great bricked in a factory reset version of kb5 ugh. And this all happened because I tried to use stupid Kies!
Son of a ginger biscuit I figured out why it would not connect it was the 6 FOOT CORD I had hooked up for convenience it WILL NOT GO INTO ODIN OR KIES without the original 3' cord wow
Don't know if it was related to the Kies failure or not but now I am up and running though I cannot flash any .zip with cwm, says signature not verified, and I cannot find a toggle, I have 2.3.6 running now, rooted with super one click zerg, recovery 3e, is there a difference between "rom manager" and "cwm"?? How do I fix this I'd like to install the custom debloater .zip... upgraded from kb5

Definitely stay away from ROM Manager, from what I've read. You're getting that signature verification error probably because the phone now has standard recovery vs. CWM. That's an assumption on my part, though. You would have to ODIN one of Drhonk's modded kernels that comes with voodoo/cwm/root to get CWM installed. Within the standard recovery there is not a place to toggle the signature verification.
Considering you're on KJ6 now, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032 and grab drhonk's KJ1 kernel. Put it into the PDA section of ODIN and flash it. Then you'll have CWM.

I had the same issue when I first started. ROM Manager is an app used to download & install custom ROMs, make backups, etc., but it does not work correctly on our phones. "CWM" (as used in the context of the SGS4G) is the custom recovery menu we install to do basically the same things. Anyway, follow stephen_w's instructions to install a custom kernel and that will solve your issues.
Awesome response stephen_w. A link! So much info out there I'm compiling a small database but when I need something it's usually back to search!
I was up and running KJ6, trying to install .zip files from root of sd card using cwm. Did not work - error was E:\ signature verification failed
So, decide to ODIN back to KB5, and try to load cwm, upgrade via cwm, and see if there was a glitch there. Did not work. Upon ODINING back to KB5, download screen has different look, and phone bootloops at Galaxy S logo. I'm about to ODIN flash 2.3.6 again and hope that it works....
This all started because Kies failed (presumably due to length of cord) the KJ6 from Raver that I ODIN'd in I THOUGHT was all stock actually came with CWM and super user preloaded. CWM did not recognize su.apk in the root and was therefore less functional. I fixed permissions and the error went away, but many icons were still greyed out. I wanted to bring back my apps/data from rom manager backup, but my recovery would not work. It would not open the .zip files, and there was no toggle to enable/disable signature verify. This may have been because I did not buy the pay version of CWM, or I don't know how to use it properly. Do you have to somehow flash the recovery to enable CWM? Is there a particular recovery designed for KJ6 SGS4G??
Also, what is the "bootloader update" option for in ODIN?

Weird; I've not had the signature verification error with CWM, only with the standard recovery.
When you went back to KB5 you went from a Gingerbread (GB) ROM to a Froyo ROM. Froyo & GB require different boot loaders so if the ROM you flashed did not have both boot loaders, then you get stuck in a boot loop. Going back to KJ6 will probably get you going again.
This all started because Kies failed (presumably due to length of cord) the KJ6 from Raver that I ODIN'd in I THOUGHT was all stock actually came with CWM and super user preloaded. You might have problems recovering to GB ROMs. This is due to an error in CWM for GB. The problem prevents the /system partition from unmounting. From what I've been told, you have to flash back to a Froyo ROM, like Bali, to do the recovery then flash back to the GB ROM afterward. Not sure if that's your problem here, though, as I've never used ROM Manager.
It would not open the .zip files, and there was no toggle to enable/disable signature verify. This may have been because I did not buy the pay version of CWM, or I don't know how to use it properly. I've never paid for a version of CWM. I've always used one of drhonk's modded kernels to get CWM. Installing the KJ1 kernel I mentioned earlier should do that for you.
Also, what is the "bootloader update" option for in ODIN?

My best ODIN advice: Let ODIN decide what needs to be checked and what should not. I've not used the "Phone Bootloader Update" feature. Don't go anywhere near the "Phone EFS Clear", either. I've a feeling that would wipe out your IMEI and other things.
See if you can get Raver's ODIN Stock KJ6 to install, then install drhonk's KJ1 kernel. Once done, reboot into recovery mode and see if it is CWM Red recovery, which is should be. Note the version number at the top and report it back here.
If all of that works well and the right version of CWM is there, then maybe we need to examine what ZIP you're trying to flash. Maybe it's a corrupt file.
Thank you very much, succesfully flashed GB 2.3.6 KJ6, succesfully flashed Drhonks KJ1, had a hard time entering recovery boot mode
RECOVERY BOOT MODE 3 BUTTON SGS4G 959V
HOLD: vol up, vol dn, power
RELEASE: power
RELEASE: vol up, vol dn
Disabled voodoo and I'm about to load up busy box, (CWM i.e. rom manager???) per the instructions......
UPDATE 20:02 ownloaded "rom manager", re-enabled VOODOO, rebooting. I think I get what's going on here. The file system is being reformatted / partitioned every time voodoo is enabled/disabled. I'm assuming the enabled mode is ext4 partitioning. However, cwm must be installed during fat32 mode, thus the reasoning for enable/disable voodoo. Can't wait to try this out, is it really faster than stock KJ6?? Love the look and feel of the rom already!

Yeah, since being on GB I've been unable to get into recovery unless I use an app like Quick Boot or using ADB from the Android SDK.
Rom Manager and CWM, to my knowledge, are different animals. Good luck getting it going; it sounds like your 95% of the way there.
Heck yea workin good now to restore those apps I lost and debloat and play with boot animations!!!
UPDATE: Just also flashed via CWM .zip the debloater file, SWEET
Bloatware remover flashed with cwm works awesome, just browse to find the .zip doesn't even need to be in root dir
So far no noticeable deficiencies and without even installing app killer I have 165 used and 343 megs of ram free!!
I'm about to try to backup progs using rom manager, but when I click "backup/restore" it tells me I have to flash clockwork mod, which I'm pretty sure is already flashed??

ROM manager doesn't work on the SGS4G. Your best bet right now is titanium backup, or flashing the bali kernel for 2.2 if you want to make a full backup using cwm recovery.

Ok, my infuse is rooted and have done GTG, odin back to stock (at different times when CWM wouldn't install)...with root and without. I have successfully rooted and had superuser install with su# updated.
Have download CWM from the market and flashed the recovery with no luck. Download the file from XDA links and put on root of sd card, with renamed "update.zip", entered 3e recovery and reinstall packages...with the following error:
E:Failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
Yes I have tried to download it again from different source in case of bad download...
Are their any other ways to install CWM......? at a lose cause my other Infuse worked on the first try of everything....

if you get no where,
I would do a factory reset when you are running the stock ROM under /settings/privacy/reset
Then I would try the heimdall package adam outler made.

What worked for me after Odin to stock was using SGS to flash the voodoo community kernel from froyo after that it allowed red CWM to work flawlessly and then I could flash ROMs again without issue.
Just a follow up to who ever would run into my problem:
I did return to stock using Odin and could never get CWM to flash using the app from market nor putting it on the root of the SD card. I tried GTG back to stock...with no luck getting CWM either....nor could I get Heimdall to work.
So I was able to use SGS kernel flash from the market to flash the "community kernel v8"... and get CWM.....so I don't why nothing else but the SGS flasher worked.....but I got it!!
Thanks for all the input and help fellows!
Wookspy important having the same problem i just got my infuse today i rooted and 3e recovery is installed i just keep getting the verification error when installing packages all you did was flash the kernel and it worked ?

The old 3e update method that worked for Froyo doesn't work on UCLB3 Gingerbread.
To do what you want to do, you'll need to flash a custom kernel with CWM recovery already included, or use the third package listed in step 1.) at this link.:

Only the third choice of those three packages has CWM recovery. If you didn't have it, you were using one of the first two packages in that thread. Good job, though, for getting it through SGS Kernel Flasher.
i swear i did.. i even redownloaded it and tried again when you told me to.. not sure what was going on? i should have had cwm.. not sure why i didnt?
but problem solved, all good now! just installed emancipation, since im familiar with the collective! seems pretty good so far.

3e recovery doesn'twork?

Hey guys, thanks for reading. Here's my issue. My samsung Infuse has root. I put the 3e recovery file in the system-bin as supposed to I have flashed CWM via rom manager Problem is, when I reboot into recovery, there is no reinstall packages. only reboot, install update and wipe/format options. Also, I get the failed signature errors no matter what I do or how many 3e recoveries i try to download and use, it is constantly the same issue..... any ideas? I have followed the procedure to do this down to the letter

are you on gb? the 3e mod doesn't work on gb because the recovery file is in the initramfs. when you see it in the file system that is just where it is mounted but it is actually being held in ram so when you shutdown it is no longer there, instead a new copy of it is loaded into ram from the kernel image. the actual binary is inside the initramfs files that are compressed in the kernel zImage and not accessible with the normal file managers, the only way to change recovery is to edit the kernel zImage files and flash it to the phone. that's not a task for anyone which is why we have odin and heimdall flashable kernels that skip right to cwm recovery. the 3e methods are for froyo only.
i will note that if you have root you can flash a cwm kernel with sgs kernel flasher but the only gb version that can be rooted is rogers stock and needs a version of superoneclick with the zerg rush exploit which uses a usb cord anyway so there is no reason not to use odin or heimdall unless you have already done the rooting.

are you on gb? the 3e mod doesn't work on gb because the recovery file is in the initramfs. when you see it in the file system that is just where it is mounted but it is actually being held in ram so when you shutdown it is no longer there, instead a new copy of it is loaded into ram from the kernel image. the actual binary is inside the initramfs files that are compressed in the kernel zImage and not accessible with the normal file managers, the only way to change recovery is to edit the kernel zImage files and flash it to the phone. that's not a task for anyone which is why we have odin and heimdall flashable kernels that skip right to cwm recovery. the 3e methods are for froyo only.

Ok, thanks for explaining that to me, I've been at this for a couple days now. Yes I am on 2.3.6 is there a way to flash a jelly bean or ICS rom through odin? I have odin and understand it a bit more than heimdall.... where might I find a couple? I'm used to being able to throw a rom on the sd card and away we go!!!!!
I did however download and install a pre-rooted GB for the infuse but no CWM.... so where can I find a odin flashable JB or ICS?
Thanks!!!!!
Actually, my neanderthal mind finally figured out after flashing the pda in odin that the phone was not going to finish restarting on it's own and that I had to boot into recovery and then flash whichever rom I choose from there THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

to get to jb. flash cm9 first.
you may have to do it twice with a factory reset and format system, cache, data in between the first and second flash.
then you can flash jb

i think there is a ics odin package but i never used it. jelly bean is different for the infuse because it is mtd. i don't think odin is capable of flashing mtd roms and if it is the packages would be very different... as similar as ics and jb are they couldn't fit the system files on with jb and had to move over to mtd partitioning. ics was able to fit on the bml partition that existed so it hasn't been converted over.
