Nexus S 4G; 3G uncap ideas? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I came from the Epic 4G, and with 6 months now into my Nexus S 4G, I've noticed minimal topics covering ideas to maximize data speeds. Any devs that might be willing to throw some sources to the public here to help others like me get into data speed configurations, it would be much appreciated if possible.
(Average data speed in Oklahoma around here for 3G is .5-.8Mbps DL and .4-.5Mbps UL) so you can see why uncapped data speeds is important around here.

in the market search for 3g/4g optimizer , its free and does what your asking for, but setting it to maximum will use alot of battery power.

The phone doesn't implement any kind of cap. The slow speeds you are experiencing are a product of Sprint's largely overloaded network.

[Q] Nexus S Wireless Speed

Hi,
Would it be possible for some Nexus S users to post their speedtest.net results for comparison please...
I cannot seem to get faster than 5.5Mbit/s with the nexus s, whereas the laptops on the same network can achieve full 16Mbit/s line speeds over the same wireless.
Are phone wireless adapters capped at 5.5Mbit/s? Is this a power issue?
Any info would be greatly received.
Thanks in advance,

you are talkin wifi right?
Yeah, WiFi...
802.11g/n
Same issue here but it seems it's only slow when using android apps, when you use a flash based browser speedtest I get like 20Mbit/s and more.
Its always die to bottleneck of being a mobile device limited by the CPU and ram.
However I don't know the highest speeds nexus s owners have been getting. But in general mobile never gets full speeds due to bottleneck of the mobile hardware CPU etc.
My cable connection is 8Mbits down and 1Mbit up. My Nexus S 4G gets 8Mbits down and 1Mbit up using the Speed test app. No issues here.
I also remember seeing 14Mbits on a WiFi connection at a fried's house who has higher speeds with Cumsucks (cough) I mean Comcast. Also using the Speed test app from the market on my phone.
I found something weird when using the latest speedtest.net app. When I start a speedtest and immediately after press the home button and go back to the app after a while, I get great results (20mbps and up). So when the app is on the foreground the phone has difficulties to render the app and do a speedtest :s

Data Speeds

Has anyone else had an issue with the data speed on their galaxy s 4g? I am getting "4g" but the when I run a speed test it stops a couple of times and then resumes. Maybe post up numbers of your speed tests in 4g areas?
It always seems to hesitate to hook up.
I have a rooted 4g fyi.
Ping
573ms
download
1773kpbs
upload
1420kpbs
Mine's decent.
Holy crap. What am I doing wrong? Is there a firmware update or something?
I'm on whitehawkx's deodexed KC1. That test was a good one, it's usually like 10-12mbps. what area are you in? Did you have better speeds before or has it always been at that speed? It may just be your area.
But there is an update available through kies mini.
Im in Salt Lake City. Most of the area is 4g with a few spots of 3g, at least so was the map that I looked at. I just barely ran a speed test on it for the first time because I noticed that the connection was rather laggy. Do you think a new sim may solve the problem? Because I am using one that is about 3 years old or so.
Yes. Activate the new SIM the phone came with. I've been told that the older SIM's aren't quite compatible with 4g. I had my last SIM card for about 6 years when I got this phone and finally decided to use the new one. And run the test several times, the first one is always the slowest.
I'll do that and report back lol. Hopefully it will improve.
He's right, you need to use the new SIM. The old SIM is probably not using 4G tower services and still using 3G tower services.
I have just put in the new sim and it's gotten much speedier but it's still not as fast as it should be. What are your network settings?
Even though vegas was on of the first cities turned up for 4G, I've never seen crazy speeds. I'm not complaining, the speeds are always good, just nothing crazy for a phone that is capable of doing 21.1 mbps.
I just did a speedtest comparison between my SGS4G and HTC THunderbolt. and man! Thunderbolt is getting 21mbps and My SGS4G is only getting 5mbps But Thunderbolt Battery sucks!

I think it ALL depends on the area and carrier. Like tmobile 3g is way faster then cousins AT&P 3g. But in the next town His edge is faster than my edge!?!
Yes I agree, it all depends on the areas. Plus if you are on t mobile than you better only use 5gigs of data a month or below or they will throttle your speed

Slow hspa+

I'm in San Francisco right now and am clearly in AT&T's 4g territory. Well I'm only pulling 3mb down on a speed test. And my buddy who is sitting right next to me with his iPhone 4 is pulling 4.5 down. I thought the iPhone 4 was only hspa and not even plus?
Is it possible ATT is throttling me because I dont have a "4G" specific plan?

A data plan is of course, always going to be a data plan. There is no difference from one plan to another AFAIK besides 2GB and 4GB or if you're grandfathered for unlimited.
Just obviously with software updates etc. to enable "4G".
I'm up here in MT and I barely touch 1.5Mbps if I'm lucky. My friend has the same issue, and AT&T keeps telling me it's because MT is a "new acquisition". BS I've had the service for almost 3 months now. Learn to put up more towers!
Anyways, that's my $0.02.

Wells there's not much I can do about it now. I'm in the back seat of a car going 80 miles an hour towards a non '4G' area.
I was certain I flashed the right radio. I have the H emblem next to my service indicator.
Can anyone that has experience with san Francisco confirm my speeds are unusually low? Also does anyone know if the iPhone is hspa+?

3 months is not a long time when you think about it. It takes 3 years and about 2.9 million dollars to put up one single tower.

I'm getting 1.5 in my hometown of Sacramento, but that's clearly not in 4g territory so I assumed its just 3g there (even though I have the h emblem). 3 is definitely than 1.5 but it still doesn't explain why my buddies iPhone is pulling more down when its apparently not capable of hspa+

I have read in a number of posts that the data plan does matter. The 4G plan offer access to another APN, with is required for authentication on the 4G network. In the Dev forum, there is a thread about APNs that discusses this.

I really wish this hadn't been moved to QA because no one looks in here. I am really trying to find a solution to this issue. I have been searching and can't come up with a definite answer. I need people who live in the bay to post what speeds they have been getting. I think I may need to call att.

I saw the the thread about editing the build prop yes. I just checked att coverage maps for 4g and Sacramento is now in the coverage zone. Should now be seeing hspa+ speeds here. I'll do a test when I get home but I'm willing bet my roommates iPhone will still pull faster speeds than me. I will also get on the phone with att and find out if i need a different plan. Will report back.

Comparing the iphone to the inspire is not really fair as the iphone doesnt use the same apn settings, and they also have a reserved amount of bandwith set aside for iphones only. Not to mention they seem to go faster due to alot of things being cached on Apples servers which the iphone connects to first so it seems like they can pull data faster but it is not what it seems.
Ah, I'm not the only one pulling down slower speeds than other devices. My GF's Infuse consistently pulls down 6-7 mbps while my Inspire, at the same time and location, will pull down 3-4. My build prop is edited, and I've tried other radios (and rils) with not much luck. Is this a device capability issue?
The only thing I haven't done is mess with APNs much. I feel as though it won't change anything, but eventually I'll try that as well.

I would try that, As it can have a great impact on your connection. I could set you up with the old apn settings and you would pull edge speeds. So it only goes to reason that the APN settings might have a large thing to do with it.

I'm going to look around at the speeds others are getting. I just can't seem to get more than 3-5 mbps. I know my area is capable of it because my GF's Infuse gets 5-8 mbps consistently, and at the same time I test mine. Weird.
I'll wait for compelling results before I change mine, because I've been modding heavily the last few days and I'm exactly not in the testing mood.

The day after I got my Inspire, I went to an A's game. The best I got on that trip was 1.5/0.35. A week later in Sac, in the parking lot of the Kaiser on Morse Avenue, I was able to pull 5.0/0.35. The best I got at home in Woodland was 3.0/0.35. I am now rooted, running ClearDroid, and get 4-5 down with upload better than 1. I'm still on my unlimited plan.

SLOW G?????

When I first got my Thunderbolt, the 4G was 18Mb. Now its 6Mb. Is it the ROMS or what?
Try network congestion...
Do you really notice it at all when surfing the web, or are you only complaining because your speedtest results aren't super high numbers anymore...
This isn't a big deal at all, VZW advertises their 4G LTE speeds between 5-12 for download...
yea once more and more 4G phones continue to be sold the speeds will drop due to the demand, so dont worry about it, and it wont really affect your DL speeds because most things dont go over a certain speed anyways.
So 3g will be faster in the near future

Crazy thought on LTE Throttle!!!

You know how we get throttled on LTE sometimes at 2.5 or 3.5 gigs per month (some users even higher), well, I was just curious if we could increase our throttled connection to a higher cap. What I am saying is using the same throttled APN without switching APN's. I do believe that switching APN's as soon as you get throttled you will not increase your cap. The problem is data connections are so slow that you can't even stream content. Any thoughts?
They throttle based on users in your area. Here in San Diego I got throttled at 2.02 Gigs. I called AT&T, and I was like WTF. In my area I'm considered a heavy user, which I'm pissed because I still got 13 days till my bill cycle ends. So the way to increase the throttle rate is for users in your area to increase there data usage.
try it for you it might work i know they do it by area but i seen some ppl increase their throttle and now they don't get text until hitting 4GB that's good. so goo idea.

Here in Atlanta I get throttled at roughly 6.5 gigs I usually hit that half way through Billing cycle. After that I swap apns and have added 4 or 5 gigs more with the hspa apn. I do however have a little More trouble staying connected if I leave the radio on lte/hspa/gsm auto mode. But swapping apns is for sure a work around till new Billing cycle.
Also the way they base there throttling, the more people that buy and use lte phones in the area every month the higher the number will go for you.

using different apn gets you out of throttle but it won't give you lte speed. It will give you 3g speed or maybe hspa+.

I got throttled today at 10.5 GB in the South Florida market, and wondered what exactly caused the throttle, So i took a look at the build.prop file and saw a couple of things
one was
Code:
DEVICE_PROVISIONED = 1
I changed it to
Code:
DEVICE_PROVISIONED = 0
then rebooted twice. I noticed a difference when i was connected to the phone APN, then i looked further down and saw
Code:
persist.data_netmgrd_nint = 12
I changed it to
Code:
persist.data_netmgrd_nint = 64
and now i am getting 12Mb/s on 2 bars of LTE
where can we find this build.prop?phone root and need custom rom?

Stock Rom rooted. Use Root Explorer or similar and "view" the "build.prop". Scroll through until you see the lines of code above. Be careful, changing things can mess the phone up really quick if you don't know what you are doing.
I posted what is on my phone to compare a non-throttled plan with the numbers from the throttled plan listed above. The numbers were different, but I have no idea what they mean.
Hey ajdrausal, by going to the phone APN you are no longer using LTE, you are using HSPA+. So whatever that method was I don't think is the solution for capped LTE.

I was wondering the same. Many don't realize that HSPA+ is capable of speeds that high.
