[Q] EOS Nightly ICS Overclock Question - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, the nightly #33 ICS by EOS was my very first Rom flash. Liking it, but have a question about the built in overclock options.
I understand that before this, people were using either Kernals or SetCPU to set their CPU frequency values.
For this build, do we alter both values, or just one?
Can anyone help me by posting examples of their Min and Max values?
Would a 1.5 OC be [email protected] and [email protected]?
Thanks

I wouldn't put the min at 1.5 because you are going to lose any battery savings. The max should be 1.5 and any time a demanding application is launched the CPU governor will ramp up the speed. That is the way I understand it anyway.

Thanks, for clearing that up. I'll leave the minimum values alone and just alter the max settings and see how far I can get with it being stable.

I use set cpu with profiles. I slow the cpu down as the battery goes down.
battery level cpu speed
100% 1504 (stable 4 me)
70% 1200
50% 1000

Mytouch 4g Setcpu Optimization

So I've been searching the forums for a good thread on optimizing setcpu for specifically the Mytouch 4G. I couldn't find one so after i read up on it i created this profile. The tweaks that I've found make this run very fast and gets me easily 18 hours of battery life, and that is with moderate usage. These setting should work for most if not all devices. I don't get any real noticeable lag even when turning the screen on. I'm Using SetCPU 2.1.0 on a Grankin01 Kernel on a Stock ROM, and I'm also using "Autokiller Memory Optimizer" using moderate preset. Hopefully people will post there profiles anyway here it is.
Here is the thread for the Kernel I'm usinghttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876848
and here is a link for setcpu basics.

Alright here are my most recent setting I've been running.
I get around 20 hours of battery life on my phone with moderate use my set CPU settings are
Overclocked to 1.5 ghz minimum 245 ghz
Battery below 30% Max 1 ghz min 245 ghz
Screen off max 245 ghz min 245 ghz
Latest Cyanogen mod Alpha 7.0
I use max 1113 min 245 scaling on demand...screen off min 245 max 350
MT4G + CM7
Pretty sure this is in the wrong place. I guess you read up on everything except where would an appropriate place to post this be.

I get 24hrs if I put my phone away! 6hrs on average lol. Cm7 stock kernel. Grankins breaks youtube everytime. Screen off 328 max 248 min. On demand.

louie i dont know what to make of your preset here... Either you are running your phone incredibly slowly or you have forgotten a 0 on the end and are crazy OCing it...
Have mine set at 76800-1113600 on demand and I demand a lot and average about 8hrs. CM7, zinx kernel, with superpower.
I've been trying to get profiles and triggers down except I use CPU tuner inserted of setcpu. Is it possible to over clock yet still save battery? I doubt that somehow lol. If anyone can post full settings that save battery but still runs well I'd appreciate it. Ill copy one of you guys.
Questions though. What is all the governor stuff like performance, conservative, on demand, etc? What are the thresholds? What are the min max standards? Like if I have 300 and 1500, which does it user and why? Those are the only things I can't grasp

Check out this link it has all you'll need to know http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html
What you want is your device to throttle based on the load being put on it. When you aren't doing much i.e. reading a text it should be clocked at 245760 for example because that's not a demanding task. and versely when you play a graphics intensive app or something, it should use just over the maximum amount of cpu power needed to run the app so the app runs smooth. but wont waste battery by overclocking to 1708800 when only a speed of 1017600 is needed. For this i use "conservative" on SetCPU because it will allow more customization.
My advanced settings for SetCPU are as follow. i haven't use CPU Tuner but hopefully it's similar.
Sample Rate you want kinda low 200000 is what i have and i don't get much if any lag.
Up Threshold is at what percentage of processor usage that the clock speed is increased. for me its set to 60. in other words at 60% load on the processor it will start to increase the clock speed.
Down Threshold is the load percentage where the clock speed will be reduced. i have mine set to 33.
Ignore Nice Load will just ignore nice processes. This includes system i believe. i have mine set to 0.
Grabbed this from a mac forum but it should apply.
"A process's priority is determined with a complex formula that includes what the process is doing and how much CPU time the process has already consumed. A special number, called the nice number or simply the nice, biases this calculation: the lower a process's nice number, the higher its priority, and the more likely that it will be run."
Frequency Step is how much of a jump the CPU will take to meet the load. mine is set low, (12) because most processes and apps wont need a whole lot of boost to run smoothly. For my device on average it will be under 768000 which is what you want and is where the battery saving really comes in. Because the CPU is under-clocked most the time its using a lot less battery but is still running everything smoothly.
A lot of people set there devices to ondemand because it's, "very responsive." although true its responsiveness comes from big steps in clock speed as opposed to the small ones that will most likely get the same job done. i.e. a clock speed of 902400 is more then enough to run the process quickly ondemand will jump to 1708800 to handle the same task.
copied from the above link at android forums.
" * ondemand - Available in most kernels, and the default governor in most kernels. When the CPU load reaches a certain point (see "up threshold" in Advanced Settings), ondemand will rapidly scale the CPU up to meet demand, then gradually scale the CPU down when it isn't needed.
* conservative - Available in some kernels. It is similar to the ondemand governor, but will scale the CPU up more gradually to better fit demand. Conservative provides a less responsive experience than ondemand, but can save battery.
* performance - Available in most kernels. It will keep the CPU running at the "max" set value at all times. This is a bit more efficient than simply setting "max" and "min" to the same value and using ondemand because the system will not waste resources scanning for the CPU load. This governor is recommended for stable benchmarking.
* powersave - Available in some kernels. It will keep the CPU running at the "min" set value at all times.
* userspace- A method for controlling the CPU speed that isn't currently used by SetCPU. For best results, do not use the userspace governor."
Please post in General section, not dev.
Well i changed my setting a little to be a bit more responsive and i haven't noticed a increase in battery usage. I set my max speed to 1516800 and min to 368640 and its running quite nicely.
Anyone else getting good result with the conservative setting?

Is there a way to change voltage? Frequency rules saves are minumum on cellphones.
I'm using Setcpu 2.1.0 and I'm using a stock OC Kernel from Grankin01 and u have to set the profile to conservative.

Frequency rules saves do save a lot of battery. Combine with undervolting and memory optimizations and you'll get big saves. But no setcpu is solely for cpu settings.
Whats the most stable speed to run this at?
So far i haven't had any stability issues on the Grankin01 Kernel. They ironed out most the stability issues in the Kernel its self. I do however keep my main profile around 1708800 - 1516800, generally 1516800, and min is set to 368640 and I've had no problem not even a signal freeze or crash. I've also run at 1708800 for most of the day plugged in and no issues other then heat. So i think is up to mostly prefrence.
I'm using a stock rom with bloatware removed and as i mentioned the Grankin01 1.7 OC Kernel.
Here is what I'm talking about. Sometimes the auto detect or something is wrong and I get this screen instead of the one you get. I don't understand why. I change ROMS a lot and I don't know if it is ROM specific or not. I'm currently on the cm7 preview from Zinx. Although I have seen it on other ROMS also as I posted before. Here is a pic.
Ignore the dropcap2 as I had just used it to take the picture.

Looks like from your screen shot that the profile SetCPU is using is on On demand, interactive or some default. What Kernel are you using? that may be the issue. If not a kernel issue. Then it may be a issue with CM7 and how SetCPU interacts with it. try disabling all your profiles and make sure that your main profile is for sure set to conservative.
Nothing else make a backup and try a different Kernel. Grankin01 has a few great ones and even a CM7 kernel with tunes and tweaks. As well as Gorilla. but id try the CM7 Kernel Grankin01 has first my buddy is running it and hasn't had problems. Just make you do a full backup to avoid a FUBAR situation.

[Kernel] [GPL] Sense 2.6.32.21 OC/UV 1.51GHZ (CFS-Smartass-TUN)

This kernel is created specifically for sense roms It will more then likely not work in it current state on any AOSP based rom
Features
Overclocked to 1.51ghz and stable as ever (for most)
added in smartass and interactive cpu freq govs
added in TUN support
compiled v4l2 as modules
many more....
for a full list of changes check the commit log here
Quirks
Smartass wont scaled below 768mhz atm im looking into it stick with interactive for the best overall experience for now.

Awesome! I'll give my feedback as to how it is working.
I did notice once a governor is selected you have to reset your Mhz or it will stay on 806 max. Also this kernel doesnt want to work with OC widget at all but works fine with SetCPU. I've always liked OC widget a little more as it uses less battery than SetCPU.
Great work so far BC your the man. Been running this bad boy and havn't had a single reboot @ 1.5ghz. Though my battery is going quick for some reason, dont know why

If you get random reboots, it means it's OCed a bit too high; just scale it back a bit and you'll be fine if that ever happens
Is this running at 1.5 all the time or does it throttle between ranges?
What is the default range?
Does the user have to do anything to enable or set the throttling?

As noted above, I'm new to OC'ing but I'm pretty sure you have to set it to the ranges you want via something like SetCPU or OS Monitor. I believe default is gonna stop at 800mhz unless you scale it up.
EDIT: And thanks Impaler for the help!

SETCPU in Thunderbolt

I just purchased SETCPU from the market. I know its free here but from what I've read it is well worth 2 bucks (or a lot more).
I'm running bamf 1.0,9 cubed and I verified in setcpu it is set to low of 368 and high of 1 ghz.
I am using stock kernel but thinking of trying adynaline's new kernel.
Anyway should I set a custom profile? Any suggestions on settings? I'm more interested in avoiding screen freeze than speeding up anything.
Profiles are not needed.
They're just usefull if you want to underclock at a certain battery level or temperature to save battery or cool down the device in my opinion.

should be fine.
i had some profiles of:
screen on - min was as low as it could go, max = 1.4ghz -ondemand
screen off - min was as low as it could go, maz = 5xx mhz - batt saver or conservative
battery at 50%, put max at 1ghz- on demand
battery at 15% max was at 7xx mhz -batt saver/conservative
temp>115 max was 7xx mhz-batt saver
this yeilded pretty good battery life. i am a heavy data user in a 4g area and on a sense ROM i could easily get 12 hours. pushed it over a day with me trying to get the best battery life possible.
Sounds good. I'm also a heavy user.
Profiles aren't needed with a lot of kernels. Some have built in profiles and in others some governors include profiles such as smartass and interactivex.
The only thing I really use it for is if I overclock, which I rarely ever do, and to change the governor.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I use SetCPU with imo's latest kernel and I never let it go above the 1.59GHz mark, but that is where I usually put it when charging via AC.

It says in the op of bamf kernel thread that bamf setting is unable to retain kernel settings so use setcpu.

How to set fernel faux

Hello, I flashed ARHD 6.5.5 with faux kernel.
I want to know how to set this kernel with System Tuner or Faux Clock.
My smartphone is Sensation XE. Thanks
Actually is set:

min clock 192 mhz
governer on demand
global voltage 0mV
GPU IO Fraction 33
I don't understand your question. What do you want to set, the CPU frequency or the voltage?
Faux in its kernel thread write : "For frequency control and voltage adjustments use SystemTuner by 3C or FauxClock app by Romanbb". What it mean? What can i do with this apps? Can i get better performance setting this values?

It means you can overclock/underclock and undrevolt.
Overclocking can lead to better performance, unvolting may increase battery life a little.
Ok, but in your opinion which is the best combination?

I'm still experimenting really, I leave it at 1.5GHz but I've undervolted by about 50 but haven't really noticed that much difference in battery life.
For governor I just stick to On Demand. Here's an explanation of governors: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369817
maybe is better if i keep the stock kernel
now i reflash with stock.
IMO to have a custom kernel with default setting have no sense!

AntonX's kernel and setcpu

Good evening all,
I am currently running vb with the latest above kernel and xda-edition of setcpu...
My question, has anyone found voltages that are stable?
I have always/only used tegrak, when adjusting the voltages I am able to adjust "internal" as well as "core" voltages, as you may know setcpu only allows the adjustment of one voltage. So, I set all levels to the "internal" voltages that worked for me on tegrak(scaling set to smartass), everything was working fine until I rebooted the phone... At that point the phone would boot then freeze after the third media scan, I had to flash back to the b1 kernel to get back up and running.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
You're trying to undervolt? Anton's b5 in undervolted. I'd stick with his recommended values.
How do you actually implement these voltages? I've only used Tegrak so this is new
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
QUIETLYloud , I dont't have paid Tegrak so I cannot make a thorough test.
I tried using very old Ultimate version available someplace on the web, and it does in fact seem to mess the phone up. I didn't need to reflash, but had to uninstall Tegrak, reboot, clear caches, and rescan SD for errors. Google says that there were issues with Tegrak module and custom kernels, but they were supposedly fixed around version 1.4.
I tied the new free version 1.6.7 from Market. It doesn't let me do much (like setting on boot), but at least it seems to work correctly with frequencies.
The setup with OC kernel is a little different. Before, if you wanted to OC, you would go and enable CPU Max Frequency, which would replace 1 GHz. Do not go there! The kernel already has all overclocking frequencies available. Instead set the Scaling to the highest frequency you want to use (let's say 1.2 Ghz, which is CPU Level 2). Then go to Optimization and set desired voltages for the frequencies you chose. No need to change anything for frequencies above you max scaling, the CPU will not go there anyway. Maybe it's a good idea to completely clear Tegrak data and start setting it up form scratch.
Let me know if you succeed.
Btw common Google knowledge doesn't seem to recommend lowering internal voltages. You will not gain much, there is just not a lot of current draw there. It's the core that draws a lot of current.
EDIT: Hmm... Tegrak seems to have a problem with smartassV2 governor. If the scaling in Tegrak is set to use anything but all frequencies, including 1.4 Ghz, the governor will never lower the frequency from the highest selected. The kernel itself (with SetCPU or without) doesn't have this problem, it's only when proprietary Tegrak module is loaded.
AntonX...
I decided to scrap tegrak for the time being and use what you recommended with setcpu and left voltages alone until I have a better understanding, since doing so haven't had any problems
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Btw I said before I set the default voltages kind of safe, even if they are slightly undervolted. I'm running the kernel UV-ed a little more with SetCPU for second day without any issues. Here are my numbers right now:
1.4 - 1350
1.3 - 1300
1.2 - 1275
1.0 - 1250
800 - 1175
400 - 1025
200 - 925
100 - 900
Hi guys
I apologize for some noobness coming this way, but I don't understand. Kernel beta5 is oc/uv - what does it mean if I don't use setcpu/tegrak?
Will kernel behave other than prior versions?
And if I decide to do use setcpu? What good does it make if uv makes no change (according to Antonx) and oc will only drain the battery even more, I mean, phone is pretty much fast, so why bother oc it?
Thanks!
