[Q] NOOB question about tethering - General Questions and Answers

First off, I'm sorry if im placing this in the wrong forum.
i have a Pandigital eReader and it wont connect to my phone's hotspot. I'm using Barnacle Tethering and everything is finding my phone but my eReader

I think it's a eReader issue...

the other devices that can tether, are you able to access the internet?
reason i am asking i tried this with my phone only to discover verizon requires a tethering data package...

is it running the connection in adhoc mode? if so some devices don't fully support this, the stock verizion hotspot is a infrustructer connection, my only guess as to why some of your devices connect and not others

u should try premium service as a experiment.

Some devices have trouble with wep security. Try running an open wifi connection.

Ad-hoc wifi tether

there is an app which allows you to connect your computer to your phone through an ad hoc network, YOUR PHONE MUST BE ROOTED FOR THIS TO WORK, it is available at http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
i am even writing this now with that program connecting my lappy, its pretty fast too.
There's already a topic for this, matter of fact its stickied in this forum section.

G1 reverse teather

What i want to do is connect my g1 to share the computers internet connect then use the g1 wifi to transmit the signal out.. anyone know how to do this?
wow, wrong thread but if i follow you correctly, you have:
INTERNET----------COMPUTER
you want your g1 to be a wifi router? wtf just put one in between internet and computer... lolz
I know what does this,
but as you didn't read the forum rules,
I also see you have only one post, so you came in here and instead of easily finding an answer to your problem via google, you clog up our development thread
Because of these things I will refuse to answer your question, I implore any other members who see this to not answer as well.

Reverse tether is the exact opposite of USB tether. Say you are at work/school and you have a desktop that has network access but you don't have access to infrastructure. You have a laptop but either don't have access to the network or don't have the network key. You want to plug in your G1 to the desktop and share its connection over Ad-Hoc that other devices (laptop, etc.) can access to have internet.

if this is what he is referring to as reverse tether, i'm also interested.
Here at work I have no kind of data signal, and connecting through my computer would be great!
Is there a way? Without having to go through our WIFI? Maybe a wired-reverse tether?
you could share your PCs WIRED internet connection wirelessly with an ad-hoc wireless connection. google is your friend.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=e...c+wireless+network&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=
Normally you can use the internet from t-mobile (G1) on your computer. He is looking to use the internet from a computer on a G1
Why call it reverse, isnt it ICS?
it 'd be great to have the opportunity to use the G1 as a wi-fi repeater , in case of low signal between wi-fi spot and your pc, as the follows:
WIFI ROUTER <------> G1 <------> PC
maybe it's possible to implement or only a dream?

Tethering is a term used to describe connecting your phone to your laptop so that you laptop can use your phone's internet connection.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tethering
Reverse tethering would be using another device to supply internet to a G1.
By this definition, connecting a G1 to a WiFi hotspot could technically be considered "reverse tethering" however we don't generally use the term in that sense.
I understand reverse tethering, but reverse TEATHERING? WTF?
go suck your mother's teat(hering)
Ad-Hoc connection
Whoops missread what you were saying...
Anyways... you shouldn't be using your phone as a modem to connect the rest of your house to the internet... It's painful and could possibly kill your phone from the heat it will generate from sending and receiving the packets. But if you really wanted to.. You can use your phone to tether to a laptop or a machine via USB and then bridge the connection to a NIC device. Then from there.. allow your computer to route the packets and assign IP to DHCP.
I think it would be nice to create an app to easily setup reverse tethering via usb. That said, don't post a thread about it here unless you are a developer creating one. Even so, it would be better to post in the apps forum. A mod will move this thread soon, I'm sure. I just wish there were some restriction requiring mod approval of new threads by junior members before they can be posted, at least in dev forums.
If your using windows 7 there is an program that could work for you.
I use it as i dont have a data connection on my phone.
http://www.connectify.me/
It can turn your Wifi from your PC/Laptop into an access point.
Which i believe is what your after.
Instructions on how to tether in either direction are already posted here

G1 connecting to another G1 tether?

I have 2 G1's both are running cyanogenmod 4.2.15.1. One has a data plan, and the other does not, is there any way to connect the non-data G1 to the other through wifi tether? Every time I try, it just doesn't show up as an availiable network to connect.
Ask Google about enabling ad-hoc mode. Or you could tether through Bluetooth PAN:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=666988
I didn't try this, but both approaches should work.
Do you have some knowledge on unix systems?
I do remember hearing about Android not being able to connect to any ad-hoc wifi. I am not aware of anyone being able to do it.

Then now you are ;-) Many people use ad-hoc mode, there are plenty of howtos in the internet.
I've done it before... I use the WiFi tethering app available through Google Code. The project is Android-WiFi-Tether (sorry, I'm too new to post links). I don't know what app you are using to tether, but check the settings to see if it's got the SSID hidden.
but have you been able to use wifi tether to share the phone's connection with another Android phone? I've never had to, but I do remember hearing about problems with it. Then again it was a while ago and things could have very well changed.

Yes, I have been using that exact version of wifi tether. Iphone, samsung, and blackberry phone can connect, but no matter what I try I just can't get the g1 to even see the connection. I have changed the ssid, enabled WEP encryption, and even changed the channels to no avail............I guess it just wasn't ment to be LOL. I can't even connect using the bluetooth PAN option either
Ehh... again, from the beginning...
It is possible to use both ad-hoc and BT PAN on G1, but they are not supported officially, so you must do some hacking. Wireless Tether for Root does it for you, but it can start server only, not connect to existing networks and I don't know whether there is an app which simplify that second task.
You could try to find some app or howtos about doing it manually - through hacking. As I mentioned before, there are plenty of them in the internet.
Finally...
I would like to thank everyone for the help, I finally got it done, I just had to edit some settings using the terminal. If there is anyone else out there wanting to do the same as me, just search for ...How to connect to Ad Hoc networks using Tmobile G1 Android at hydtechblog"dot com"

yet another reason to get the nexus one, but then again mine does now too LOL
So the client phone can be hacked to be able to recognize and connect to ad-hoc, but this generally requires root access....... correct?
I have been unsuccessful at getting my wife's non-rooted Eris to my rooted Droid.

Yeah, exactly
Also there are patches floating around to add ad-hoc support (to connect to them like to normal AP networks), so maybe some roms have it, but most (all?) of devices just can't use ad-hoc on original rom.
I would have just used wired tether...
Never had a problem with ANY android device I've connected to my g1.
I just like to keep things simplistic in specific situations...

Reverse Tether

I didn't know whether to put this in the "Android Software Development" forum or this one but does anyone know of an app that can preform reverse tether (with the help of tweaking the computers network) via USB and at the same time tether via WiFi.
ie: The phone will use the computer's internet via USB and then allow other devices to connect to the phone via WiFi and use the original computers internet. Basically turning the phone into a mini-router.
I don't know if this would even be possible. Seems like there would be a lot of data clutter. But I have seen apps out there that can preform reverse tether via WiFi on an ad hoc network.
I assume that if I can get at least the USB reverse tethering to work. I'd be able to use Froyo's built in WiFi tethering also assuming it uses the computers network and not default to 3G.
And the reason for even needing this app?
Is because 20Mbs > 3Mbs.

A Wireless G Router can be had for less than $20.00 - You can probably find a friend with an old one to give to you.

Why use the phone for this?
I don't know how to get it to work but on Android in a vm it says on the Android that the internet is being tethered to it through Ethernet I don't know If its an app ill take a screen shot later

[Q] wifi hotspot

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone knows of an Android app that will allow me to share the lan connection on my tablet via wifi?
Have looked at lots of hotspot type apps but the vast majority are simple shortcuts to an exisiting wifi hotspot function that shares the mobile data connection.
Seems daft to me that I have lan and wifi on my tablet but I'm looking at an ap to connect my other devices!
Thanks
Jin
I didnt understand what u said
If u want to share ur tab net to other use wifi hotspot
If u have wifi connection u can connect via wifi

Are you trying to tether your data connection or do you mean using your tablet as a hub for an existing wifi connection?
What phone do you have?
What carrier?
Did you root your phone?
Have you flashed a new ROM?
Sorry but you were rather vague in your post.

Ok thanks. To clarify my tablet (not phone and therefore no carrier involved) has both ethernet and wifi I would like to use the ethernet to connect to my network/internet and then broadcast that connection via wifi.
This is exactly the same thing a normal wifi hotspot does except it broadcasts the mobile data connection as opposed to a wired connection.
The tablet has been flashed with Tims 6 ROM
Don't now if it's possible. On phone it;s not possible to share be a hotspot when you're on wifi. I guess it uses the same piece of hardware. That might also be the case for you with the LAN.
BTW try talking to this guy :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735708
he had sort of the same question perhaps he figured it out?
edit: This is also you i now see.. never mind

How do you have your tablet connected to the internet, wireless or wired? If wired, how did you do that? If it's wireless, you're just using your tablet as a signal booster.
What i'm confused on is if you connected your tablet wireless and want to connect other devices to your tablet's "wifi" which in essence is wifi, why can't that device connect to the same internet as your tablet?
I think we're all a bit confused on what you're trying to accomplish.
Sorry folks struggling here with what you don't get (not being smart just confused)
I have an Android tablet that has both wifi and an ethernet connection, I connect to my network via ethernet and want to use that connection to then create a wifi hotspot for my other devices to connect to.
I already do this with my win7 laptop and am looking for an app to do the same on the tablet.
If my terminology is correct I need to bridge the lan connection to the wifi adapter?
