Is there a way to program the side volume rocker to change the volume system wide? I don't like how the volume rocker only changes the volume for the ringer when not in an app. I'd like it to change not only for calls, but also system, music, and notifications. I know there are apps out there that can do this, but that is not a solution I am looking for. I feel that this basic option should have been included in Android but I can't for the life of me find a solution.
Thanks,
Anyone? I can't be the only one wanting this feature.
No there is nothing you can do unless you remap the function of vkeys. Ask a dev may be he might be able to help you with it.

Hi.
I notice the Touch-Cruise lacks the Windows button that activates the start menu (like on the HTC Trinity).
Does this mean you have to use the stylus every time you want to open the start menu and go down to programs.
If so that would suck wouldn't it?
Or is there some other way of activating the start menu without the stylus?
Otherwise this device ticks all the boxes for me.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

You can map any hardware button you like to it. I use the one below the green button.

How do you do that.
(Sorry if this sounds like a basic question but I don't actually have the device at the moment. I'm seriously thinking of getting it though )
Also how do you like the device overall?

Cheers.
Strangely enough when you go into settings>buttons on my Trinity there's no option to change the buttons below the screen.
You can only reassign the buttons on the sides of the device.
But with the Touch-Cruise you're positive you can re-assign the buttons BELOW the screen, right?
Thanks.

You can use your fingers. I don't understand where the problem is.
For those that don't use it for anything and want to disable it cause you accidently hit it 10 times a day, flash the disable zip. If you want to enable it again, just flash the default zip
does that take care of the button completely or just it's long-press function?
Nice work! Do you think you could make it so i can hit the volume up button to bring the phone out of suspend instead of hitting the power button?
Both of the .kl files are the same...just giving ya a heads up before someone restores the default and doesn't have their search button back...but nice find. Thanks!
The default one was the one I forgot to put in there but it's fixed now

Besides disabling the search button, is it possible to map it to do something else like launch internet or something of that sort?
nice i seen a few people complaining that they kept hitting it all the time. good work bro

Its probably not built into the Sense build on the device. It used to be, but idk anymore since it isn't required by Android 2.0+
Also, to the people that want it to do something else:
See my post here. My guide is from way back in the G1 days, but all the same things apply here. Just change file names. An interesting use would be to change the search button to a camera button
Or see Decad3nce's wonderful writeup on the functions you can assign here. For the CDMA Hero, again just use your judgement. Use the right files
Also, my app Search2Play will soon be making it's way to the Evo now that we have usermode system partition access. Check it out here
Nice! Thanks for this, I always hit that button by accident.
Thank you! That damn button annoys the hell out of me everyday
Strange. I love the search button and use it all the time to text, call, launch apps etc.
Glad this is helpful to all the rest!
thanks!! i hit that damn button all the time

calkulin, would you be okay with me adding this to the online kitchen im slowly building for the EVO?
i'll link it back to this thread and credit your name.
If your looking to use the volume down you can just open the keymap~.kl file included in the zip with wordpad and swap the volume down and power or how ever you like. Just realize that the cap buttons won't work in place of the hardware buttons.
I posted a fix that swapped the volume down and the power button.
Nice fix tho.

Get no lock from the market.
Volume down takes you streight into the phone no lock screen.
Since i use vegan tab and have all the soft buttons on the screen at all time (home, menu, back) is there anyway to disable the capacative ones so that i dont actually hit them while holding the tab?
bump ^^^ anyone??? robeet?
I asked something like that earlier, but no one responded. There's a thread under Themes and Apps about Settings Catcher. Maybe a concept like that could be used, in the opposite way (assign invalid activities), to essentially make the keys do nothing?
Jim
This is definitely possible to do.
Use Root Explorer to go to /system/usr/keylayout. I am guessing it's the file gpio-keys.kl in that directory.
For a guide as to how this works, check out this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695936
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing you can map those keys to something like ENDCALL that doesn't have a meaningful activity associated it with it on our tablets. Or maybe there's a null activity or something like that.
You'll have to experiment a bit. I haven't tried any of this yet myself.
hmmm, pull out the device back and unclip it?
Seriously though, I'm not certain. Possibly it's linked to the file /usr/keylayout/tegra-kbc.kl. So you might be able to REM out some of these and it could actually disable the tactile buttons.
How would you get out of a full screen app that hides the status bar?

Yeah i didnt think of that. damn... its just annoying when im in the browser or something and i hit it by accident
I was hoping to find an app/hack that would let me set the duration of a soft key press required to register as a stroke. It would then be easy to make a widget to turn the delay on and off for times when you know you will be more prone to bump the buttons.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone has any ideas on the above or disabling them completely. I (or one of my kids) *always* bump one of the capacitive buttons while using the gtab. It is frustrating, infuriating even, when you're in the middle of something and BAM, you have to start over.
TIA!
If you could get rid of the buttons you can just use button savior. I'm using the zeam launcher in fullscreen and barely ever touch the buttons on the side now

I use 'Button Remapper' to map the hard buttons to 'focus' which effectively disables them. I then use 'Buttton Savior' to provide on-screen buttons.
Works well and ends the frustration of the buttons not being back-lit or accidently hitting them when holding the tablet.
Thank you! I think that will do the trick. Do you use the galaxy tab version?
ETA: just searched the market from my Droid and saw a third vanilla version of button remapper. I will go with the assumption that its this one.

Hi guys,
I was searching for quite some time now and found one similar mod on the xda forum for what I am looking for (but unfortunately only for the Nexus 4).
My aim is to be able to wake the device by using the volume rocker in addition to the standard power button.
I have already tried editing the generic.kl file in /system/usr/keylayout/ by adding WAKE behind the VOLUME_DOWN value with no success and would like to know if there is any other way to accomplish this.
Thank you for your help.
PS: If anybody also knows how to achieve a maximized lockscreen widget on wake instead of the standard minimized one that would help me as well

app called touch control will most likely be able to incorporate Nexus 5 to wake up with knock or slide. Also, "turn off the screen" app is helpful for now.
In case you still concern, it is implemented in the GravityBox, under Navigation key, VOLUME ROCKER

The bottom button is not yet possible. There are only SPay. Perhaps there will be third-party software. You can go to the top. Everything is in the settings.

Same here. I really don't understand why Samsung did not allow us to use the "Press once" and "Double Press" on the back button! Ridiculous
Definitely need full button change options...
Downloaded an app called Button Launcher, tried to remap the second button long press to Google Pay but unsuccessful, still defaults to Samsung Pay.
