Contrary to common opinion, the Galaxy S is not cheaply built. Its only major weakness is the flimsy, .5mm back cover, whose glossiness and "carbon" pattern add to the cheapness.
Instead of just putting mine inside of a case, I suggest that someone who works at a machine shop or can access a good one consider putting together a replacement back that is constructed from 1mm (or thicker) aluminum, lightly brushed to finish it off.
I for one would be willing to spend $$$ for a good looking replacement.

Where is the beef?
All this is handled in the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720718 months ago. The metal back cover can be difficult for the antennas.
I have read through that thread. Only one of the suggestions is an actual replacememt back, while the rest are simply skins or cases. I already have a case. If metal is problematic for the antenna, then I wonder about those completely aluminum cases.

My one is not a skin or case neither is it a replacement back. It is the customised one and if you can find a spare back cover you can make it look anything from luminous to chrome or brushed ali. Maybe there is someone out there good with ceramics LOL.
I really don't like the extended battery door that came with my ebay 3000 mah battery, so I lightly modded the original door to make it fit the extended battery. Keep in mind this is my first attempt... it has a lot of room for improvement.
do you know if you can use the ebay case with a belt clip holster? I am not a fan of the seidio case either, the ebay case looks better.
Looks good, whats tools did you use?
I was thinking about doing this but don't have the proper tool too. Have you considered making a plastic mold to cover the battery? I have heard of people using some thing call shurgoo to make custom plastic pieces.
I have seen pictures somewhere on here of people that are using the seidio clip holster with the back half of the case removed with the ebay battery door, but I now cant find the pictures... i know that mine would fit in a normal belt clip holster because the bottom and top are still as if it was in the stock case.
As far as tools, i just used a pocket knife, a pair of scissors and liquid super glue. Maybe shoe-goo? i dont have any idea what shurgoo is? I do want to try to make something out of plastic or fiberglass resin maybe.
I don't mind having the extra thickness, but all 3 of the extended battery covers I've gotten via eBay always have bad fitment just around the power button. It sticks out past the button and/or that same corner never stays down. I'm tempted to do something like take the stock cover, cut an opening in it, and then epoxy the hump from extended cover onto the stock cover. After that, I plan on finishing it off w/ wrapping it in some 3M DiNOC black CF since I've got some extra sitting around. Anyone wanna donate a stock battery cover?
Are all those "wooden" back covers printed plastic or is there real wood covers available or coming up?
Yeah, where to buy them someone help pls :crying:
Aliexpress has those printed plastic "wood" covers, search "Xiaomi Mi4 back cover bamboo" etc.
There's a thread on MIUI forums showing all the back covers.
I want one of this but there are still not available.

The original Xiaomi products are just stickers... Not a replacement of the original back cover.
Like this one : http://item.mi.com/1144400007.html
But some 3rd party manufacturers made replacements for the back cover. Honestly these 'fake' covers are better than the original one. I can recommend one of these. :good:
Where can I found that covers?

Real wood covers finally available.
Good news. I've bought one four days ago. Let's see when it comes.
Xiaomi Walnut Wood Back Cover
Mi 4's back cover edge is hidden within the metal frame, so it might be difficult to remove it by hand. Using a suction cup to remove the cover is a good trick to use.
The back cover comes with suction cup. Just got one a week back, looks awesome!
Got a walnut back on mine not too long ago, looks and feels great!

I got the silver one from flipkart. its called motomo mi4 cover. seach for it.
a bit bulky but very sturdy. phone fell a few times without any damage.
I current have the nexus 10 and have just bought the pixel c to replace it. For the nexus 10 I had the case which clipped onto the back panel and left the main body visible. I would like something similar to that for the pixel c. Is there anything like this? Perhaps that uses the magnets to attach it?
It is mentioned in the article

Ok, so I gave up looking and made one myself. I already had a MoKo case so I decided to use a heat gun to pull the PU leather and microfiber interior away from the hard plastic body. Then I trimmed it down and placed a piece of steel I cut down between the two. Add a bit of super glue to hold it together, then VoilĂ ! a case held in by the magnets within the tablet. The hold is pretty good, but does have some slight movement to slide around. Maybe using a magnetic trip instead of steel may stop this. But it does not pull away and does its job for now.
The trim is a bit off as the superglue went hard and made a slight rough edge. Maybe I can find some rubber sealant which would leave a nice finish.
Great job! I was thinking about this exact design the other day. Seems like a no brainer. Love the simplicity and use of the magnets.
I'm looking for a thin case that has metal in it so it will work with magnetic mounts. I realize I could just stick one of the metal plates on the phone or case, but I'm looking for something that looks nice.
I guess an alternative would be a cool looking stick on metal plate.
I bought one of the Google Live cases and I pulled out the silly (and pretty much non-functional) NCF switch. I put a Schosche Magic Mount plate on the inside of the case where the NFC switch used to be, and then put a piece of clear plastic packing tape over it so it would not scratch the back of the phone. Works great for me, the plate is not visible and it sticks really well.

The third, and probably most common, option is: you can place the plate in between your phone & your case where it's not visible to the outside world. That's what I did (after wrapping it in a single layer of clingwrap so the metal plate wouldn't scratch my phone's back), and it works great!
