sd card with 8107 - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I take it if I were to add a 32g sdcard, I will lose everything and it will format back to stock, if I back up, I still can't use the backup on the new card to get everything back, my dev unlock, interop unlock will be gone as well, this is rediculous, my old bb could except whatever I through at it as a secondary drive, is there not something in the registry to make this secondary?

Well i see nobody hAs tried so i may very well try this later on, sorry to say im gonna lose everything on such a simple thing as an sdcard, to show how stupid this , i put that sdcard in my acer iconia a500 and BAM i have an additional 32g , didnt change anything else , will try on the wp7 i suppose

Not quite sure what you mean format back to stock. Yes, you will lose everything stored on your current card, but I don't think any registry settings are changed. You will need to re-install apps, games, music, pictures, etc. Just time-consuming. Only things I think you'll lose permanently are SMS & email stored on your phone.

Froyo Gallery is killing me

Hello,
I'm hoping you guys can give me some pointers.
Ever since I started to update to Froyo builds, the only thing that doesn't work is the gallery. It ALWAYS locks up the phone tight, I have to pull the battery.
I have tried formatting the SD card (the one that came in the box with the N1, btw on Tmo, unlocked, non rooted), doing a factory reset before each update. Then I simply copy my photos into the phone. I don't copy the .thumbnails folder.
I'm now distressed because FRF85B is out and it's supposed to be the OTA update, and I tried it last night and got the same lockups.
Does this mean I can't use froyo on my n1? it's seems impossible to fathom that my phone would be different.
I'm out of things to try, besides a factory reset and a formatted SD card, I don't know how to troubleshoot this. Eclair works fine with the gallery never had a problem.
I've seen people complain about this on the net but never seen a solution.
Best Regards
I have found some ways to make the Gallery crash, like by getting info on certain files, but no lock-ups!
What about clearing the Application's data from the Settings menu?
(Applications--> Manage Applications--> All--> Gallery--> Clear Data)
Thanks for the tip. I haven't quite done that clear data, I've just been deleting crap off the SD card.
I ordered a 16GB class 10 SD card (can't find the 32gb anywhere heh heh and when I get it I'm going to do a factory reset and then flash to froyo and start over.
It is very possible that my SD card (the stock one out of the box) is too slow or otherwise has problems.
I will post back here just in case other people are seeing similar problems.
cheers

hi there
did you come right with this?
So I got the 16GB class 10 card, and had the same problems.
I had to do a wipe from the bootloader and format the SD card.
Now the phone is stable. I was able to copy my photos and music.
But when I try to put too much on the card, like Brut maps or just copy the app specific folders from the old sd card, I still get lockups.
I'm pretty sure now that it's not really gallery related but SD access, seems 2.1 handled it much better than 2.2
Still waiting for the exchange HTC setup for me.

[Q] Swapping Captivates

I know the contacts, call and text logs, apps, app settings and data, etc. will all be wrong but can I swap Captivates with a friend by simply swapping SIM cards? i.e. our phone number and plan and data plans move to each others phone.
If so, can all that other stuff be Titanum Backed up to the external sd and then restored on the proper phone?
Yeah, it will work just fine. The only thing that will change is your IMEI, this will only be an issue if you try to file a warranty or insurance claim.
Both Captivate accounts are on the AT&T network so I'm supposing the IMEI is not an issue except as you say for warranty purposes and whos name is on the account for that particular phone IMEI.
What about doing the Titanium Backup on each phone to the SD card then after swapping the SD cards doing a restore to the phone? Will Titanium Backup complain that the backup file doesn't match the phone?

Not that it really matters, but why are you switching Captivates? What's the advantage of trading the same phone?
Well, they're not really the same phones since my friends phone is stock Eclair and mine is unofficial Froyo with root and lag fix.
My friend is very impressed with the speed of my phone compared to his but is afraid of bricking his phone and/or losing all his apps and data. So I thought rather than chance it with OS updates and such, maybe just a swap of SIM cards (and data and such) would let him try it for a few days to see if it's worth the chance.
If you have titanium backup folder on your external card no problem. I have 2 captivates that I swap back and forth ever so often and never have an issue with tibu restoring.
Since you are running different ROMs, do not back up and restore ANY system data with TiBu after the switch. I would just flash his phone for him. He will be able to restore all his apps and if he's using Google to sync he can easily get his data back. You're really complicating things by swapping phones.

Just flash his phone to the official Froyo rom for him (after backing up everything that can be backed up and restored from 2.1 to 2.2), if it messes up, he can always go get another phone from AT&T as a warranty replacement... Rooting and the Lagfix isn't very risky so he really has nothing to worry about there, most of the big issues come with installing custom roms/recoveries...

[Q] Phone keeps losing installed apps on SD card

So I've been having this issue for about a week now. All the apps installed on my phones SD card once I reboot are not loading up. I know the data is still there because the first time that it happened I spent the better part of day freaking out thinking everything was gone gone. At some point I thought of checking of the data by plugging in into the computer. Turns out (1) all the apps miraculously return (2) I can't mount the SD card anymore (3) I can't unmount the SD card anymore either.
What is the deal? It's kind of annoying to lost everything every time you reboot. I'm not really in the mood to tether my phone each time for the unforeseeable future just to keep everything loaded. Has this happened to anyone before? What should I do?

What do you mean, the icons? I'm going to assume that's what you're referring to, for this reply...
If that's what you meant, icons on the home screen take a few seconds to get themselves drawn, if apps are on SD.
You can switch to a different skin then switch back to your original skin, to get them to redraw. Or delete/reposition them one at a time. It's a workaround, but changing the skin temporarily is faster.
It's a sense bug, I'm pretty sure.
Doesn't happen if apps are installed on the phones internal storage, so until they fix it, move your apps onto internal storage, if you don't want to deal with this each time you reboot. They run faster if they're not on your SD anyway.
Unless you have waaaay more apps than you really need, of course.
Sorry should've been a little more specific. The shortcuts on my home screen are all no longer working and I'm well aware of how long it takes for sense to load them up on startup but even when I go to display all apps it only displays the apps on internal storage. In fact each and every app on the card (in the apps settings) has a funny icon that has a little "sd" on it now and just says computing and will not load.
And since writing this I can no longer get the phone to load any apps from the sd card by tethering it to the computer. It's still accessible - just downloaded today's song from amazon and played it - but apps on it are almost like they're gone.
This happens to me sometimes too. But usually when it happens to me I can go into Settings - Applications - Manage Applications and move the troublesome app to internal storage, and then it's fine. It never completely disappears.
It might do you some good to reformat your SD card. Move everything off of it first, then format it, then put everything back on.
Is it the stock 8GB SD card, or a different one?

Yup.
@homeslice976 copied, formatted (made sure it was FAT32), copied everything back and no dice. Same symptoms, Apps will not load.
@zuriken I don't know why you asked about the stock SD card or not, do you think it needs to be replaced? It's only been since February.

full format, chkdsk /f, still nothing though. This is honestly getting to the point where I'm tempted to switch to another phone. Why can't I access my stuff?
Another new bonus, every time I get some sort of alert it now plays random MP3s from the SD card. What is going on...

I'd try a brand new, good quality SD card before resorting to switching phones.
Have you flashed any custom roms or anything? I didn't see you mention either way.

It's gonna be a little while until I can try a new SD card but I'll get back to you.
The only ROM I loaded was the one to originally root that removed the uploading cap from ATT.
I also solved where the random sounds were coming from apparently it doesn't want to play my selected theme and no matter what I do the only one that works is the original HTC default 2010 one or if I download any only the Celesta theme plays... I have a sinking feeling that copying all this funky data isn't going to resolve anything but I'll give it a go.

Good luck.
Since you haven't been messing with multiple roms and such, I don't know what else it could be, other than the SD card taking a dump.

[Q] rooting, battery drain, and SD Card issues

So I have my new verizon SG3, and I wanted to root it to have access to the SD card. As I seem to have already filled up my storage.
So I started reading many threads, starting with this one for Jelly bean:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
I had trouble with the custom recovery stage. ODIN kept failing when trying to flash it. So eventually I came with a prerooted stock flash at this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33948598
and that seems to have got me to root status.
Now I am not really sure what I need the custom recoveries for, or if this link includes the boot loader or unlocker, or whatever it is, and if I really need it.
I'm looked at various ROMS and haven't really seen anything I think I need.
All I really want to do is have access to my SD card which I thought I had with the root option. But any apps that I say "Move to SD card" they only move to the internal SD card and not external.
How Do I actually use my external card?
Also, I have noticed that every time I turn the screen on, I see the "preparing SD card" message on the notification bar. and sometimes a message saying it has been removed.
What's going on with that?
And finally, my battery has been draining rather quickly. "MEDIA" seems to be using about 70% of the battery.
This is including two instances of Downloads
com.sec.android.providers.downloads
DRM protected content storage
and media storage
I read somewhere that it may be unwise to delete the preinstalled content, so I tried freezing the DRM as another forum stated that was ok as well as media hub, some of the google apps, and the verizon ringtones.
But in that process, I somehow managed to loose my notifications and ringtone selections, and when I try to reinstate them, it shows unknown ringtone, and the only options when I click to change is my GO SMS and Solid Explorer. I did locate the ringtones in the systems folder, but clicking on them only gives me an error.
I'm not sure how to get the standard selection screen back.
I tried flashing the previous stock rom again, but that did not help any.
So the question is, how do I get things back to working again, while still being rooted? Then how do I get true access to my SD card? And what can I safely remove. If a ROM will accomplish all this, which one is best and easiest to install?
I already used up half my data usage for the month installing all my apps, so I'd prefer not to do anything that would make me have to go through all that again. I have ROM toolbar installed, but it doesnt seem to want to let me do a backup. (I may need a recovery if I can get that working this time)
update
Update:
I managed to get the CWM recovery flashed finally.
How do I know if my bootlocker is unlocked if I installed the prerooted jelly bean rom I linked to before?
I also managed to get the ringtone selection to work again. I had the Media service frozen still. But that was what I think was a big battery drainer, so we will see. Im not sure why it would be draining the battery so much, something is going on.
I'm still having issues with the SD card, and installing anymore apps even after I deleted a few of the big ones. I was going to install a battery calibration tool witch is less than 200 kbs and it still is showing insufficient storage. Let the drive doesnt seem full. Maybe this is a partition issue? If so, how do I verify that and change it?
Ez unlocker in the play store will unlock your bootloader if you are rooted.
Volume up the phone before clicking yes. ;]…
One thing I've always stuck to, if it's messed up, go back to the beginning.
Could be md5 of dl or build of rom/packing of .tar, flash, etc.
Flash pure motives rls 13, works great.

Ok, so I am unable to install any apps now no matter what I uninstall. I'm getting an insufficient storage error now, yet I seem to have plenty of space. This is getting really annoying.
I bought the SD card for apps to save their data to it, yet all apps save to the internal SD CARD, and not the external. I see a few apps i can download to possibly switch this option, but I really shouldnt have to go through all that. Whats the point of having a SD card in the first place if no app uses it.
Regardless, something is messed up. Battery is still draining like crazy which seems to be a common problem, but I have yet to find a fix. I would consider a factory reset, but I need to figure out how to back up first, as I can not afford to go and reinstall all my apps again. Will the back up preserve all my apps and their settings without having to reinstall from the play store? I have less than a GB of data left and I'm only about 6 days in my plan.
I am trying to drain my battery completely now, to see if that may "reset" its calibration or whatever. I'm not sure how that works, but It was suggested in places, so I'm trying.
What are my options for a full data wipe? and what is the best way to get my apps back without using a lot of data to do so? I tried doing a backup with my rom toolbox pro last night but I don't believe it worked. I dont think my phone is connecting to my external SD card. I can see the data on it if I browse, but no app actually saves anything onto it. Also, the phone wont let me delete, rename, paste, or do anything accept maybe open files from the card. I had it reformatted to FAT32 before I loaded anything onto it. So I'm not sure the issue. If Its protected, I'm not sure how to unlock it as micro cards dont have he lock switches like the big ones (which was a whole other issue for me when connecting to my computer)
Any advice? I know I'm not the only one with these issues.
So I am still having insufficient space errors when trying to download apps, though for some reason I did manage to get one random app installed that was in my "All apps" section from my previous phone.
I have tried wiping catch, and dalvik, and battery stats. That did nothing.
I have also tried reflashing the unlocked jelly bean update, with no results.
I think a full wipe may work but once again, since I can't make a back up since I can't install the apps to do so. I'm a bit reluctant to do this because I don't want to have to reinstall everything again and use more of my data connection. I do have a wifi connection, but I'm not sure I want to risk that not working properly.
Is there a way to manually backup my apps and data? what should I make copies of?

S8+ factory reset, wiped micro SD card

Hi all, I have had my S8+ for several months now, everything was fine until this morning when I woke up to unlock my phone, it unlocked as per normal. I enabled wifi and opened google chrome and checked the weather. The, the phone shutdown and within a few seconds the blue screen appeared with a message (erasing). It took a while for the phone to boot up and go through the initial setup like a brand new phone.
Now, all the data on the phone and my 32GB micro SD card are gone. I have tried half a dozen recovery software on my PC but none can see any files on the micro SD.
I have no idea what happened and why it has wiped the micro SD card. I have lost images and videos of the last few years, I know silly not to have them backed up.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Wow, that is a great disappointment losing all that personal info. I suspect you are running a recovery software app from a PC or a Mac? If you are not getting any meaningful results from the data restore apps, and you know those apps to be of good/high reputation, then I am wondering of your phone uses a type of 'wipe' function that performs a military/DOD sort of erase?
If that is the case, that stuff is likely gone forever. If that is not the case, hopefully you can find another app to try and restore your stuff.
Now, on the other note, that's an odd behavior for your phone to just reboot and do it's thing, wiping your system. Do you have any type of security going where it might have thought the phone had been stolen, and performed a wipe as protection for the owner. . . (you)?
Good luck.
I do have company email on my phone and I have agreed to their security policy which wipes all your data. This could be one of the reason, however could they erase data from SD card?
I had over 60GB of personal files on it and I thought the SD card will not get wiped in any case.
I have been reading around but can't find any solution. Stuffed to the max.
