[Q] bootloader unlock possible? - Motorola Atrix 2

Since I heard motorola isn't going to unlock bootloaders I'm thinking of getting a different device. However if it is possible for a dev to get the job done I will gladly wait. So is it possible for a dev to crack this phone? Or rather must we wait for Motorola?

Unfortunately we will have to wait for an unlocked version of the bootloader to be leaked, and or found through cheesecake. This is how the OG Atrix was unlocked. I have found a way to DOS the bootloader, but it will brick the device at the same time, so it is possible to overload the bootloader temporarily, but once the phone is booted, it corrupts the initrd boot image, so you can only run the changed kernel once. Until we can figure a more stable way to use that information, we will have to wait for the leaked version or cheesecake.
Heck why not get another phone and still hang on to this one to play with? That is what I am doing. I am also in the process of locating an LTE version of the galaxy nexus, to play with on ATT's network, so I will have both phones to play with.

funds prevent me from buying another device. i think im still within my 30 days but the only phone better was the gs2 and they wouldnt let me get that one as my a2 was an exchange for my nexus s. they gave me 600 bucks credit and gs2 was 650 bucks. i suppose im stuck. i have 4 lines so ill have to wait for my upgrade. shoot by then att might have the galaxy nexus. well ill just sit back and have some fun with it and check for updates on cheesecake. this is such a great phone with SO much potential. i just dont like having to sit on stock for so long. i really enjoy flashing any rom i can and trying every devs work. i wonder if by moto saying they wouldnt unlock bootloaders that meant what we would find on cheesecake or official releases OTA.

Unlocked Bootloader?

Once you root this phone, you can install custom roms, right? I was wondering because the Galaxy S doesn't seem to have any custom roms.
Is it just because it's not a North American phone, or is it because there's some kind of hardware restriction, like the Milestone and Droid X?
ive been hearing some pesky talk about encrypted drivers. Give it like 3-4 days and we'll see
I was going to give it a week or so to see what happens. Can't wait to get rid of my unlocked G1 though!
Custom rom isn't out yet. Once phone is released the actual copy of the US version of the rom will be floating around and someone will get hold of it and start modding. We just found out it can be rooted with the Euro version. I give it little time and you should see ppl posting custom roms for it. You might even see a Froyo mod coming soon. I pray to God this is possible. Actually i wouldn't mind plain old vanilla version. Again praying.
ps galaxy s has roms now, just not the u.s. version. The official u.s. release will change all that.
i wouldn't worry about.
the bootloader is open and not locked down like htc or motorola phones, to root takes only a few mins. no sweating involved

Locked Bootloader Motorola Atrix

Sorry I am a noob at android and i am trying to decide between which at&t phone i should choose. So does this locked bootloader thing set me back from customization for android phones?
Any other suggestions for at&t android phones i'm due for an upgrade june 2nd.
Bump?
Going crazy trying to figure out what android phone i want from at&t.
thanks in advance.
Yes, for now anyway. It means you cant install complete roms like CM7 or MIUI. The ones available are mostly themes. That said, there are multiple workarounds being worked on at the moment with good progress being made on them, so it probably wont be an issue before too long.
Personally, I'd go for the Atrix. Its still the best phone on AT&T from a raw horsepower perspective.
so eventually i will be able to unlock those custom roms, with that said if i get the device and root it what will be the extra features?

[Q] Moto Droid Razr Maxx HD Bootloader

I went out and traded up to a Razr Maxx HD only to come home to find out that the moto site wont unlock the bootloader. F-you verizon! My big question of the day is... Is there anyone out there willing to try to crack the razr maxx hd bootloader? I would, but I'm a machinist. I dont get it completely, I followed through an article here on the V-SGSIII, loved it, I get the jist of it. Maybe I should've got into computers but instead when I was young, I went to work at a shipyard and became a machinist.
Ha, you and me both. Instead of reading up on computers and IT in college, I stuck with my degree of choice and spent my time boning broads. Even given our bootloader issue now I wouldn't change a thing
Anyways, do a search for Safestrap V3.05.16 (newest version). It's sort of a work-around the Verizon bootloader. Doesn't unlock it, but I think it pretty much does the same thing as though it was unlocked. There are a few threads, with the .zip file and instructions.
Thanks, yeah I did that right after walking in the door from buying it. Got root, safestrap so I'm good to go. I'll keep it but wednesday I'm upgrading the thunderbolt to a DNA, that ones looking pretty badass...thanks for your reply

The only problem is we don't have the ability to flash kernels, radios, or other system images. And without an unlocked bootloader, this phone is unlikely to attract more developers.
I got my Razr Maxx HD about a week ago and I'm still happy with it, but I wish there was a way to unlock the bootloader so I could have the same level of control I had on my Incredible.
I tried the bootloader unlock today and didn't work. I then called Motorola to ask if it is possible to do it and they said "no, not now. Possibly in the future" In response, I said this phone would be a top device if the phone was unlcoked and came with AOSP's latest. But I will have to send back to Verizon for something else. It upsets me that this device is ruined by VZ/Moto locking the bootloader.

Verizon's attitude regarding "unlocked bootloaders" sucks.
Here's the deal. If one is expected to pay full price for an "unlockable" device, then can one get discount on the monthly cost that adds up to the subsidy cost over the term of the contract. In other words, if the subsidy is $360, then give me a $15 discount on my monthly bill if I pay the full price for a device (or I bring my own device!)

Help with OTA

I have an At&t s6 that I purchased to use on straight talk. I am fairly certain that there is a new update out. I go to check the OTA and it says it has been interrupted. I have tried previously to plug it into my computer and use smart switch. But it said something like its not allowed.
Basically is there anyway to get the otas? Since these are security fixes I don't think I want to hold on to a phone that won't get them. My current thoughts are wait and try to root and odin the release, if it gets posted, or see how the new Moto x is and switch. I even contemplating selling this one for the unlocked version. I have really learned a lesson hahaha.

Both locked and unlocked get the same OTAs. Give it a little more patience and wait a while. It will come soon.

Verizon Pixel

Hey folks,
Long story short, I got rid of my 6P for an iPhone. I switch back and forth every year between both platforms, but man i'm missing android really bad lately, after only 2 months.
Can you root, unlock the bootloader, or put a custom kernel on the verizon pixel?
I dont really care for ROMs because flashing was becoming too time consuming, I just want stock image with a kernel.
Thanks,
Kinesics
With the release of Android 7.1.1 two days ago you can no longer unlock the Verizon bootloader using the depixel8 exploit. Of course if you get a phone that hasn't updated yet and can prevent that update you can unlock it.
I suggest you buy the Google store version instead. Fully unlockable and 100℅ compatible on Verizon. Even Verizon video chat works on the non Verizon one.

I would but my connect at Verizon is letting me do a return on my iPhone after 60 days, so really I'd pay nothing. Since the patch just came out 3 days ago I'm pretty sure i can find a phone thats been sitting on the self for 2 weeks.

Totally get that, some of the vzw deals are amazing. Just be careful when you first turn it on, read the various threads here and in the Pixel XL forums. Some say you can bypass setup to depixel8 and others have not been able to. Simply, plan it out really thoroughly.
As for just unlocking in order to install a kernel, I'm not really sure you need it. I've been bootloader locked since DP2 on my N5x and battery life is amazing on that and this device. So if you do unlock then update to 7.1.1 after that and run stock kernel for a week. You might want to give up flashing all together.. well other than the OTA which you can sideload.

I've had mine for about 36 hours. It's unlocked and rooted already!
Got my Pixel last week followed the steps and I'm in business. Unlocked and feeling right at home, no more sea of icons!
