Help changing permission

I am updating to Thiaiz rom, and he told me to change permission on the init.d file. but ising the root explorer I cant seem to change it, because it is a read only file. can anyone help me on this issue please..
-Navigate with a file explorer to /system/etc/init.d and change permission on both scripts to "777" it means mark the 9 permission options.
-Install Script manager from market.
-Open script manager, navigate till system/etc/init.d and run the 2 scripts at boot.
thats the instruction, but i cant seem to follow it.

There's ES File Explorer installed. Update to latest version in market if needed.
Open up app
Press Settings
Scroll down to root settings...
Check Root Explorer and Mount File System. If you fail to check Root Explorer, update to latest version of ES File Explorer in market.
Now that you got root explorer mode...
Press back till you go back to the file explorer.
Press the Sdcard looking icon on the row of icons. Its the leftmost icon in that row of 6 icons.
After you've pressed it, click into system folder
Next, click into etc folder
Next, click into init.d folder
You will see two files in there.
Hold down on the file (whichever first doesn't matter), then press properties.
Click Change in the permissions section, and then check everything.
Press Okay and repeat for the 2nd file.
After you are done, restart the phone.
After phone is restarted, go check to see if the permissions are changed.

[Q] Why can't I save in /sdcard/ but can save in /mnt/sdcard?

I am a new user, and just ROM'd my Motorola Milestone XT720 using the cinci Bell's 2.2 froyo update. The major problem that I am encountering is that market aps are not downloading files correctly. For example I try to add a podcast into my que using "google listen" and I get the following error:
"Error (/sdcard/com.google.andriod.apps.listen/downloads/f09cfbe (Permission Denied)"
Now I go into supermanger's filesystem, and I notice that /sdcard/ has no permissions at all. I try to add them, but nothing happens when I do. Itself, /sdcard/ is empty.
When I plug the phone into my PC, it can access the SDcard fine. In super manager however, it appears that the directory it is accessing is /mnt/sdcard.
It seems that programs assume that the SDcard is going to be located at /sdcard/ but it is really located at /mnt/sdcard. Is there any way to redirect them?

The normal mount location is /mnt/sdcard, /sdcard is just a symlink for convenience.
Apps should use the android api to determine the sdcard location

You could readding a symlink from /sdcard to /mnt/sdcard.
Regarding you changing the permissions, do you have root? If not you won't be able to change the permissions or create a symlink.

I think I have root access, but in supermanager explorer, the root directory reads "/(r/o)" - does that "(r/o)" mean read only?
That would make sense of my problem - since I cannot delete, rename, or change the permissions on /sdcard/.
However, I'm pretty sure I have root access. I never rooted my phone after applying the ROM. I just ran superoneclick again, and it said the phone was rooted. Supermanager explorer has superuser permissions. Am I missing something?

I just installed Root Checker by Joeykrim - it verified root access and a busybox installation.

yes r/o means read only

So what do I do about it? Is this a limitation of the file explorer I'm using or my permissions? I'm not sure how to gain more permissions than superuser.
It would be a huge help if you let me know what steps I need to take. Sorry for being a noob!

ive the same problem but it's with gscript folder.

So I downloaded ES File Explorer, then went into the settings. I turned on the root function, and then used the option below it that said something like "mount root to enable write." I clicked that. ES File Explorer didn't have a change permission feature, so I held down the home button and switched over to supermanager explorer. Now the root directory read "/(r/w)." I was then able to change the permissions for /sdcard/.
The podcasts from google listen at the NPR app I was using were still not downloading properly. I rebooted the phone. Strangely, the permissions that I had just set in the root directory, and the test directory I created in root, were both gone. I don't know how that happens.
I tried using BeyondPod, which works for downloading to /mnt/sdcard/. I wonder if that means Google Listen and the NPR app (DroidShogun) were coded to save to /Sdcard/ rather than prompting the API for a path.

[Q] Questions about Astro File Manager

I installed Astro File Manager and I have a few questions.
1) When I look in the /data directory in the phone, it shows as empty. When I do a nandroid backup, and untar the result, I find numerous folders and files in data.tar and even find the original .apk files from the Market (/data/apps)
2) I found out my phone (obtained second hand from ebay) already has a custom ROM (InsertCoin) and expect is should already be rooted. So I tried Astro File Manager to edit the /build.prop where it says "screen capture=false" to switch it to true. Astro File Manager, is claimed to have root capability in this article

But I find the Save button disabled and cannot write out the file. Why?
Is it possible or likely to have InsertCoin and NOT be rooted? How do I tell if my device is rooted?

Try es file explorer I don't think astro can access root files. Es can root explorer can to. Just go into settings and check the root access and mount /system I think is what it is.
And yes with a custom Rom you should be rooted.
You can check by downloading terminal emulator from the market then type su if super user pops up and asks to allow your rooted

another useful tool is called root checker. downloadable on the maret. one click and it will tell you if your rooted. also give you the best way to root for your device if you arent.
and yes es file manager is good for re-writing files.

I confirmed my device is rooted with the terminal emulator.
When I try to edit /system/build.prop (by choosing to use the text file editor) from es file explorer, it is still leaving the Save button disabled and I cannot write the file back out. I remembered to check root access and mount /system.
So, how do I edit /system/build.prop on a rooted device?
(And es file explorer shows me my /data directory.)

I use Root Explorer, it has an easy mount r/w option.
If everything else fails use ADB and Notepad++ on the PC.
In essence:
adb pull /system/build.prop AN_UNEDITED_FILE
Notepad++ to edit it, making sure EOL is set to UNIX
adb shell, su, "mount /system as r/w", cd /system, cp build.prop build.prop-
adp push AN_EDITED_FILE /system/build.prop
The mount r/w comand is:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
I think that's it, I'm sure folks will correct me if I'm wrong.

I just was able to change my build prop with es so I'm unsure why you cannot. I used the es note also and when finished I pressed the menu button and save was available.
Also this version of es file explorer I just used is brand new I've never used this update, it was included in the newest hd revolution sense 3.0.
I suggest just trying again. Possibly try another app or use the adb method if you think you can. Adb only looks hard really its just copy and paste.
I wish I had more advice but I can't replicate the same problem. Keep at it its just something simple were overlooking.

True regarding ADB, but it's guaranteed to work. The other thing is you can also do so much more with it.

[Q] advance rooted file explorer

folks, newbie here.
i noticed that there are 2 types of file explorer, the system file explorer that allows you browse around the /system/ directories and the media file explorer such as andro file explorer
could anyone please advise me any file explorer that allows me to access both /sdcard/ and /system/ directories please?
i stumbled upon this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=716309 that recommends root explorer, but it doesnt allow me to open /sdcard/ directories

I use ES File Explorer and Root Explorer. Both give you full access to your phones file system, including /system and /sdcard.

They do, es file explorer is free, and allows you to to lan shares from pc. Just have to enable root options in settings. I have both, but I currently use es file since I can access my pc from it.

I have a rooted HTC One X ATT version, running on non ATT network (brought it to asia)
it doesnt allow me to tether out of a box nor play downloaded glumobile games.
i've browsed xdaforum and found out there are several files in root directory that need to be replaced to fix this.
so i need to access /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
(which root explorer allows me to access, but doesnt allow me to access the sdcard directory)
whereas ES only allows me to access /data/data/
did i do something wrong with the ES?

I don't get why you think you can't access your /sdcard with Root Explorer, you can access EVERYTHING with it.
And with ES you have to go into the settings an enable the root explorer to be able to access everything.

one last question, whenever i tried to edit /system/build.prop
it doesnt allow me to save it after editing, or replace the file with a new one.

You have to mount the file system as read/write otherwise you can't edit anything in /system. Navigate to /system then hit menu >settings, then scroll down all the way to the root settings section and check the circle next to Mount File System. You will be able to edit the build.prop after doing that.
As far as Root Explorer FC'ing on you, I dunno man I've never had it crash on me once in the 3 years I've been using it. Try deleting it and re-installing it.

System "semi" Writable?

I recently Wiped my Phone completely and decided to Re-Flash Viper 1.2.1.
I noticed a problem prior to re-installing but thought nothing of if since it wasn't crucial at the time.
In Root explorer, I am able to delete [i normally delete boot animations] system files but not add where I need to add. Example, I wanted to add a ringtone to my system/media/ringtones folder. I normally [for the last six years] could just copy and paste such files using a root file manager.
However, when I any these files to for example /system/customize/resource/ it doesnt add it. BUT IT DOES rename the file and save it under a dif folder.
Example. Tried copying-copy to-moving to "androidtwirp.mp3" from sdcard to /system/media/notifications and a message pops up saying"notificationsandroidtwirp.mp3 successfully copied-moved to" and it saves notificationsandroidtwirp.mp3 to /system/media/ and it stays there. retrying from that location only results in "notificationsnotificationsandroidtwirp.mp3".
So not only does it rename the file but it saves it in the wrong location. I am at a loss for word. I tried the basics to tryand fix this but i cant seem to hit it on the head.

Edit: Not updating Super SU app, file explorer seems to have worked. Will attempt to duplicate problem to see what actually caused.it.

FOUND IT!
Updating my ES File explorer broke my system writing ability. DO NOT UPDATE is because when you do...
Any file you move, copy/paste to the system will not work properly.
This first happened when I tried to copy and paste a boot animation after I updated ES root explorer. It would rename whatever file i was trying to paste/move/copy over and save it under a sub folder.
example.
copying a ringtone [i.e. androidtwirp.mp3] from SDCard to System folder, the path is /system/media/audio/ringtones/ and it would rename it "ringtonesandroidtwirp.mp3" and save it under /system/media/audio/.
So basically not only was it renamed [which i didnt want it to be] but it would save it to the folder before the actual folder i needed it to be in, plus it would corrupt the file deeming it useless.
moving "ringtonesandroidtwirp.mp3" into the correct folder would only result in "ringtonesringtonesandroidtwirp.mp3"
this happened across the board with all files being moved around
The ES File Explorer version 1.2.1 comes with works flawlessly so don't update it.
I uninstalled ES [also any folders in SDcard related to it] and downloaded JRummy's root explorer and everything is back to normal except i have to reboot the phone to see files [like ringtones and notifications] that i added to the system.

I think it has something to do with our devices having an unlocked bootloaader, but still S-ON. There's S-OFF in the Dev section now if you really need to write to the system folder a lot.
I came from the Vibrant so I know what you're going through

Yeah, im on a low hboot so s-off might not be in my plans since I can practically flash what I want but it was ES file explorer, when I updated the apk the root permissions broke when writting to the system. I emailed the dev and they said they'd have it fixed on the next update.
