Hi guys,
I'm new to android and rooting, and all that stuff, so pardon my inexperience and lack of knowledge. I attempted to root my new HTC Vivid using this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836 . However, at the step, boot into recovery mode, lies the problem. When I click recovery, my phone ends up at a black screen with a small phone/red triangle icon.
Does anyone know the problem? By the way, I have't unlocked the bootloader on my device. Is that the problem?
Thank you

Your bootloader needs to be unlocked (S-OFF) before you are able to flash a custom recovery (then you can boot into it).

Okay, so I'm in the middle of doing this. I'm at the part with the command prompt. It says "waiting for device", even though it's already plugged in.
EDIT: Nevermind, I found the problem. Thanks for your help.

Hello:
I sent my NEXUS in to SAMSUNG for a touch screen non-responsive on the left side issue. The tech stated there were no problems with my NEXUS S!
Upon turning it on, there is a padlock on the botton of the Google splash screen.
I called Samsung and the "level 3" tech said that my phone was now locked to T-mobile. I though that was BS.
Anyway what is it and, can I get it back to normal? My wife has the same phone and here does not have any problems so far.
I've attached a pic of the screen that shows the padlock. Thanks for the help.

that means your phone is unlocked as far as I know. I did my first unlocking and rooting of my nexus last night. When I went through the unlocking process, the "unlocked padlock" started to appear on my startup. If you hold "volume up" and the power button and turn the phone on. it should say unlocked on the fastboot screen...
You have unlocked the bootloader my young Jedi.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
yup, unlocked bootloader.
thats not a bad thing, its a wonderful thing!
lol you rooted your phone and unlocked the bootloader. that is what that lock symbol means. did you forget, or not do this on purpose?
Thanks to all that replied!! I kinda figured that is what it was.. Like I said I didn't do it, the Samsung repair facility in Texas unlocked it. I called the Nexus S support line and the Level 3 tech said " When we reflashed your software, it locks your phone into the T-mobile network" and that was after she went down the hall and consulted with the "developers", Samsung tech support is a Joke. One day I'm gunna root this thing!
Thanks Again Guys.
And to the XDA moderator, sorry I posted in wrong section initially, rookie mistake..
Anybody know how to remove this lock symbol? How to re-lock the bootloader again?

When I go type in 'fastboot devices' or 'Adb devices' it says
"list of devices attached:" and nothing underneath it .....
I have tried updating drivers via PDAnet .... still nothing.
the drivers I have are 'ADB interface'.
Am I missing drivers specific for bootloader or something??
Basically, the phone wouldnt restore or factory reset, so I decided to root it? so I found a new '1 click root and recovery'.
Once I run the script, it unlocked bootloader and also reset my phone which worked great. Only thing I want to do now is remove the open padlock icon on the google screen (which I think is by re-locking bootloader) but when I put in the typical 'fastboot oem lock' nothing happens .....
Much appreciate the help, thanks.
You got to remove everything "custom" (cwm recovery, user roms etc) from the device before you can lock the bootloader again.
When you are trying to lock your bootloader it doesn't do anything because your device isn't correctly recognized by windows, this is prolly due to missing/wrong drivers (try uninstalling old ones and then follow the unlockr guide to rooting your phone/installing adb, http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/).

what is your phone 4g or gsm?!
I've just gone through all the steps to unlock my bootloader, gone through all the HTCDEV bit with no issues, the bootloader is now unlocked. I've also managed to flash my ROM with the CWM Recovery image and as far as I know that was successfull too, i've now come to booting into recovery and the phone hangs on the HTC splash screen and doesn't appear to want to go any further. I've tried to access recovery both by doing it manually (Pull the battery, restart holding vol down etc etc), and also via the One X All-In-One Kit with the same results. Any idea chaps....

Bro, i am experiencing the same ordeal and i did what you did aswell.
I am using the Australian Vodafone region of the HTC Sensation XL with Android 4.0.3
HBoot is 1.28
Phone has been Unlocked and I have successfully rooted my device.
I'm stuck on HTC screen when i flash or recovery using USB.
If i soft reset and reboot, the phone will shutdown after HTC screen.
I can' even see my beloved Vodafone logo :crying:
My delimna first started when downloaded JRUMMY app called OVERCLOCK or something. I slightly adjusted the LCD density and frequency and then i used the inbuilt reboot option. From memory it was HBoot reboot or something similar.
Ever Since i couldn't boot up my phone and it was stucked at the Vodafone Logo.
I then used HTC one X all in one toolkit and the N66 super utility to tried boot the phone.
I tried flashing the recoveries within the tools but it won't work.
Now, those tools don't even recognise my Device when i tried to connect.
Calling all experts to assist in this matter. Thanks

I'll try that.... I should have said that my phone is not rooted, and the only way I can get the phone to start is by popping the battery. Once it restarts everything is fine, I'm trying to root my phone as i have a couple of apps that require root acces, otherwise i wouldn't be too fussed about all this, but now i'm best part of the way there I want to see it through.
Andy
SORTED!
I re-flashed the rom with the CWM Recovery and blow me, it worked. Booted into recovery no problem. The first time I did it it must have not flashed properly. I've now since flashed my phone with SuperSU and now have root access.. Alls fine and dandy, and I have also installed Cerberus in the root which is why I wanted root access in the first place.
Thanks for all your help with this,
Cheers
Andy
Hello there. I went through the unlock process just fine, but followed some reccomendation to install a new boot.img via Hasoon2000's tool in order to run Viper ROM (downloaded the boot.img from the Viper thread here). Well now my phone is in a boot loop that brings me to the HTC screen with red text saying This build is for..... When I power off it comes right back to that screen and I can't get it to get anywhere else.
Any thoughts? Thank you for any help.

Does your computer recognize the phone being plugged in? If so, run adb reboot recovery. If that doesn't work, try re-running the kit to re-root it.

I don't believe the computer is recognizing it at all. I'm not hearing the normal "ding" I get when it reboots.
first turn the phone off by holding power button for a longer time, then turn it on by holding both power and volume down buttons for a couple of seconds to enter bootloader
Did you install the Rom? Or just the boot.img?
Sent from my VENOMized HoxL
Alright, so holding down the volume button did get me into the bootloader. I tried the recovery and was able to recover using TWRP, but when I reboot it brings me back to the same HTC screen. So again, now I am able to do things via the bootloader so hopefully there is a next step to fix this.
To answer your question, I did not get to install the ROM, only the boot.img
Thanks for everyones help so far.
So go to twrp and install the Rom

Ok, went ahead and loaded up Viper 3.2.2 and it seemed to go fine. Rebooted and am at the same HTC logo screen with the "this build is for development....." It will keep rebooting into this screen several times and will hang.
I did get the tampered/unlocked notice on the bootloader before doing all this. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.
Thanks for any additional help.

ROM did install correctly but was still bringing me to the HTC splash screen with developer warning.
As a last ditch effort I downloaded the correct RUU and ran it. Device now works properly, but when trying to go through the tool kit again I get to the bootloader in the end and it says "relocked" even though I submitted my token, got the proper .bin and unlocked.
Any thoughts? Everyone has been very helpful.

I thought you wouldn't be able to install RUU if your bootloader is unlocked. But anyway, try this thread instead http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732980
I'm glad to report that I was finally able to flash the 3.2.2 Viper ROM. I was having problems unlocking the phone again, but just did it via fastboot command line. Once that was done it was smooth sailing.
I do have a couple of issues with the Viper ROM, but all in all it's fine and I'll post those questions in the Viper thread.
Thanks again for everyones help!

Re-unlocking is a *****. Took me about 80 tries. Reboot phone, reboot pc, keep trying. Eventually it will work. You didn't need to run the ruu.. You may just want to keep the phone in stock state if this seems complex to you.

Hello all, I entered into recovery mode and got this warning today. http://i.imgur.com/CHya85E.jpg
For more info, I updated the other day to 4.1.2 and it removed my root access. Now, I was simply trying to remove the SuperSU app by going into recovery mode (don't know if it can be done there or not). Any help is extremely appreciated.
bootloader is locked. search around for an answer or someone will post it for you. I'm not the best at describing how to do it.

Okay, thanks. Whenever I reboot my phone, there is text that comes up and says "custom" with an unlocked lock symbol. Could you point me in the right direction with this? Am I not able to go into recovery mode without the bootloader being unlocked?
I have the exact same issue. It came right after I upgraded Recovery to the latest Touch version. I am also on 4.1.2, but have been there a couple of weeks and have had no other problems. I don't believe I lost root with the upgrade.
If the boot loader has been relocked somehow, how can we fix it without being able to boot the phone? All attempts to boot including volume up/home/power, volume down/home/power, and home power just end up with the Verison message. It appears impossible to boot to recovery or even start the phone. I am lost.
See my thread called: “System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone.” I also could not reboot the phone to fix it.
Some great info was posted there that enabled me to escape from the Verizon prison
Hello I locked my HTC U11 life with fastboot oem lock. I had my buddy unlock & root it for me but I wanted to use RUU.exe to bring it back to original stock version.
