USB connection for xoom to iPod shuffle - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to connect an mp3 player to my xoom and manage my music without using a PC? I'm specifically asking about an iPod shuffle. My xoom is rooted and is running rana kernel. When i plug in my shuffle, my xoom registers that I have plugged something into the otg cable but does not open it. Is there an app for that?!

Yep, there are more apps like usb mass storage watcher otg and drive mount.

I have both apps and they recognize that there is a device connected via USB but it doesn't give me Amy options to open it or do anything really. Drive mount allegedly mounts the device but again, does not give me any options after that.

The question is, what does the Xoom think it is? An external hard drive? How is it formatted? Can the Xoom recognize the music file format? I wouldn't think they would be compatible.

Uses for those USB Ports?

I was just wondering, other than a USB Stick, external keyboard and mouse, what other uses are there for the USB ports on the Transformer's dock? I'm just not aware of what drivers Honeycomb has for external devices.

Hooking up controllers for your various emulators and playing games the way god meant for them to be played- with physical controls and buttons.
You could charge your mobile phone for example (no kidding!). I also successfully mounted an external NTFS-formatted (self-powered) HDD and an old MP3 player. Soon they will add camera detection and maybe there will be a way to print too (but that's just me talking).
Can you add an external USB wireless card on those USB ports?
Plug in a 3 MiFi dongle, have wifi anywhere as well as four other devices.
Hi checkbox111,
I don't think I understand your reply properly. Are you saying that you plugged a 3mifi wifi dongle and it worked?
Did you also try plugging a normal external USB wirelless adapter and connect to the internet with it instead of using the internal wifi on the tablet?
Thanks

Plugging in a mifi dongle just gives it power to transmit, you can then just pick up the wifi/mifi signal just like any wifi signal.

No! two reasons
1 why would i try when a mifi dongle works OK, i don't need both
2 I don't think these work with android anyway
Has anyone tried a USB headset? I would, sometimes, like to make Skype calls and I don't think the onboard mic is good enough and would therefore prefer a headset? Would a USB headset work? Or any way of connecting a headset with 2x 3.5mm jacks?
Thanks

When you connect a device it will appear in the menu bar at the bottom. Click on it and then on the folder icon. This opens the File Manager. you can also open the File Manager directly and navigate to /Removable/ and you'll find your SD cards and external HDD there. Just make sure it gets enough power!

Thats what i thought...must be something with the usb port as sd card works, dock works. i'll try another usb device (maybe mouse) to see if that works to narrow it down.
I can always reformat dirve too as last resort.
thanks.
Has anyone tried to tether to a phone using the usb port? If it works, it would be good for people with WM6.5 phones.

Not sure where you read this but I could see my HDD and play videos off it. I have the Prime V1.3 kernel installed so maybe that was part of it. But I am pretty sure that when ASUS offered the dock with TWO full-size USB ports they prepared the software for NTFS drives...
Has anyone tested any USB game pads? Do any work?
Has anyone tested any USB-key 3G modem? Do any work?
Well, thanks for all the ideas. I do hope that some of these controllers and other devices will be supported.

[Q] auto mount ONE sd card

So I want to connect my Inspire to my USB port on my CRZ.
I get unsupported media error.
I'm guessing that the two drives is the reason. I know there is another thread on why the phone doesn't work with cars.
My reason is the same but my question is different: Has anyone gotten an auto mount ap to work?
I've tried every free auto mount app in the market and it always prompts me to mount my drive or media player or kies.

Try removing external sd card to test your theory regarding the two drives being the cause...then you can begin trying to find a fix

Thanks, ill try that this afternoon when I get off work.
In the mean time, I'd still like to be able to auto mount a drive.

So I tried removing the card and no go. For kicks I tried to connect to my laptop and both drives show up.when I mount only one drive mounts. Still, I bet its because of two drives.

External drive with ics possible?

Hey guys. I had tiamat moray rom that allowed me to mount my 2 and 3 Tera byte drives which was great to ditch my laptop. With ics I get a black screen after drive finishes loading. USB otg watcher at that point would normally show the drive. I've tried both ics roms. Was wondering if anyone else has gotten this to work.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
yes it is, i just checked and mounted my 2tb external to mine. you need to use the app "drive mount" then it works. just make sure either your drive is powered or you have a powered hub. here is the app

Xoom USB mode

Is it possible to connect my Xoom to PC using USB Mass Storage, not this buggy MTP protocol?

I'm wondering the same thing ... I didn't notice this until now but on the new 4.0.4 Mass Storage as an option is gone.
I'm running JB ota and MTP is running fine. Actually it's running exceptionally!

Well, I don't like it. It doesn't show me real progress of what I'm copying, and it doesn't even refresh all the files, so last time I tried to check something on my xoom I saw only 3 folders of 20, and no amount of refreshing and reconnecting my xoom could fix that.
any updates?
Are there any updates in this?
I have lost all my pictures (8gb) while working with this silly MTP mode.
Went through unlocking and rooting my device (which was quite the challenge), tried to use some recovery apps without any success... The USB Mass Storage Watcher app from Skidmrk doesnt get me mass storage mode... (I'm not allowed to post a link to it.)
I just want to get it connected via mass storage, so that I can scan it with recuva!!!
You might need to download USB driver for Motorola Xoom from Motorola site. Just Google for it.

You just need to keep the screen Always ON an password unlocked and don't touch the tablet (since its ROM) while on USB on PC it should work fine.

Good to know for further reference... Only: How exactly do you keep the screen on without touching the phone? The max screen timeout setting I can see is 30 minutes...
thx

anyone figure out usb mount???

anyone figure out how to get usb mount for the s3 for Verizon. Im looking to purchase one within a day or 2 and just wanted to make sure if i hook my phone up to the comp. will it let me copy files over like things used to be?? Don't want to have to set up some type of server and do it that way just want to plug and go.... thanks for any feedback it will make my purchase that much easier......
it comes built in... its not called USB mount, its either MTP or PTP. I haven't really figured out the difference between the two yet, both seem to work just fine for browsing the files on the phone and ext card.
so plug and add files from my comp is a go then... good to hear,,,,

If you have windows plug and go as windows supports mtp natively. If you have a Mac computer there is a file from Google you download and install that gives the macs mtp access.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I find the PTP setting (i.e., appears and works like a USB thumbdrive) more convenient than MTP, which has a specific interface that not all Windows applications are able to handle in my experience. I use MTP for "synch" programs, such as MediaMonkey, which act like a more open and usable form of iTunes for our Android phones.
- ooofest
Someone else posted something similar to this in another thread and I got a bunch of flak for answering that Mtp works the same as mass storage mode. Apparently people running Linux cannot use this option, and it is different than mass storage or usb mode and I don't know why. Still have yet to get an answer in the other thread "how to enable mass storage mode". Maybe I can get one here?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Linux has been shown to have different results depending on using MTP or PTP. Windows doesn't seem to care except sometimes it gets picky and doesn't recognize the "hardware ID" of one version but does of the other.
If connected to a PC via USB and your phone is set to MTP, it's seriously as easy as drag and drop.
