Cannot enter fast boot/recovery via Power+V down - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just like the title says. If I press volume down and power with the phone off it will boot the system and not take me to fast boot mode as expected. I can access recovery and fast boot if I boot the phone and chose the desired setting in the advanced power menu.
What gives?

[Q] Have to remove battery to get to HBOOT?

In order to get into HBOOT / recovery, you normally power on the device while holding volume down. This doesn't seem to work for me, rather the phone boots up (and *really* fast, its almost as if its not booting at all). To get at HBOOT, I need to open the back, remove the battery, and I hit the power button for good measure (not sure if that is needed), then it works....
Anyone else experiencing this, or know a way around it?
S-OFF, rooted, CWM Recovery 4.0.0.9
hit the menu button and go into settings > power > and uncheck "Fast Boot"
Then, power down your phone and wait about 10 seconds, hold the volume down button and repower it and it will boot right into H-Boot.

Yeah, even with fastboot disabled i get impatient and hate waiting the 10 seconds. I tend to pull the battery anyways to save myself the wait lol
Why did HTC have to go and give a function a name that is already used by another Android utility anyways ha ha

If you have root, you can try Quick Boot from Android Market. Let you reboot into recovery mode without holding down volume down button.
or "adb reboot bootloader"
true ha ha ha
Or go into settings.......power........uncheck fastboot.....then turn off phone. Wait 10 sec. Hold down volume key and power and bam your in hboot. Enjoy.

I find the Quick Boot app for rooted users to be quite handy for booting into recovery or bootloader and I keep a shortcut for it on my homescreen. I don't use it to power off or restart though. It's something to look into if you find holding volume and power at the same time to be awkward and inconvenient.

Entering downloader mode ??

I'm rooted, unlocked, & ran the clock work recovery tool. My only question is I can not enter boatloader mode using the power button & volume down key. Phone just always just shuts off. Any suggestions ? Thnx

app called quickboot
To get to the bootloader, you have to hold the volume down button then power. Hold it til the bottom 3 buttons stop flashing. Then release the power button while still holding the vol down button.
Yea didnt want the app. Thanks just wasn't letting go of power button at proper time.

App works fine and its easier it was a suggestion
adb reboot bootloader

How do I get into the stock recovery?

Friend has a HTC Sensation on T-Mobile and is having software problems. I suggested factory wiping and wiping cache in recovery.

go to boot loader ...
(power off phone ,remove battery,re insert it ,then hold volume down + power )
from there browse to recovery using vol up/down buttons and select recovery using power button
once you enter recovery ..you will have a red triangle ..if its stock ...then do a three finger salute (press vol up,down and power at once)..then you will get some options
Thank you sir!!
Also another question, is there a way to reboot (restart) the phone natively on stock? My friend is running the Official ICS OTA if that makes a difference. Or is turning off the phone and back on manually the only way? Lol.

Nexus 5 stuck in boot loop and cant access boot loader

i flashed the latest nightly of AOKP today and then restored all my apps and data with titanium backup. When the restore was complete it prompted me to reboot my device so i did. ever since then i have been unable to reboot my phone as it is stuck on the start up screen. i then tried to restore from a backup of my other rom and then found out that i couldn't boot into the boot loader as when i held down the power and + volume button the startup would begin and then the phone would turn off. any ideas on how to fix this.
What it's happening is your stuck in a boot loop.
When you are holding power and volume down the phone is only interested in the power button part. Which is why it's powering off.
Just keep the buttons held both power and volume down. When it powers off keep them held and you should come into the bootloader

I have tried that but it just goes tocthe Google screen then turns off again

Not sure if the quote is a typo or not, but it should be power and - volume. You can also try power and both volume buttons, which will take you to the secondary boot loader.

I assumed the op was able to completely power down by just continuing to hold the power button and possibly had the wrong button combo.
What do you mean by start up screen?
You see the screen tells you "Google" and it stays there?

Hi guys.
Sorry for bumping but I have the same issue and for me it wasn't fixed by going in recovery mode. I already tried deleting cash, and even tried getting back to factory settings. But still, when i restart the phone, the same loop keeps occuring.
At first it always just went to 'google' and then rebooted and rebooted. Now it just keeps stuck with the google logo (the 4 colour image).
Could someone help me possibly?
Thanks in advance
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Try LG flashtool. Link in my signature. If you have the 32GB version of the american nexus 5 (D820) you can use the converted firmware without any problem. It was tested numerous time.
You can also try to reflash stock google rom in fastboot mode http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701
If you are using LG flashtool and you get error about cant format userdata and/or cache or by checking the flashing log you see timeout errors then your phone have a fauilty emmc. If you are using the fastboot method and you see "remote: flash write failure" text in the CMD window then you have fauilty emmc. Your only option is to rma your phone if bought from google or claim your warranty from LG if your phone is not from Google and you have the receipt of your phone.

[Q] After ROM installation will not boot or reset

So after trying to install Android Revolution HD 8.1 it has beet on the bootloader screen for about 30 minutes now and hasnt done anything. I tried to hold down the power button so i could go back into recovery but it wont reset that way either. It also isnt far enough in the boot for it to be picked up by ADB either. Anyone have any other ideas?

Power and volume down should get you back to the bootloader.
I tried that. I tried just power button and even power + Vol up. So i am guessing my only chance is when the battery finally drains.

Hold down power + volume down & up for about 10 to 20 seconds or until it powers off then if you wanna get right back into the bootloader then hold down power + volume down right after it cuts off.
