Is it just me or does the Google backup & restore feature not work the way I'm expecting it to in ICS? After you input your google login credentials during setup, am I wrong to expect it to be able to restore the data such as wifi passwords immediately?
I've wiped and flashed various ICS aosp builds a bunch of times. I think I've only had it restore my wifi passwords and attempt to reinstall my market apps 2-3 times.
Perhaps it doesn't work with aosp builds. I haven't tried the official OTA build. What are your experiences?
I'm running official but did not yet tried a restore.
However I saw many comments about Aosp builds saving only locally
Works great on Pete's. I've not had as much luck on others but I just used Pete's tonight with his latest update
It works on cm9 also I think.

Pete's was the only ics that had this feature, but it only restored my settings and apps from a gingerbread bugless beast install that I haven't used since ics dropped. I've read that this is because he uses a gingerbread build fingerprint in his build.prop in ics. Maybe that is why it works on his rom. Hope that makes sense. Of course ymmv.

I did a factory reset on my ICS and restored all my data with Google backup & restore, including WiFi passwords. I have the OTA 4.0.3
^ +1
I have done the same.. everything restored including WIFI connection!
It's only restored once for me out of my Captivate & NS & 100 ROM installs I've ran. Is there a way to manually force either backup or restore in ICS
CM9 Alfa 18 BTW.
It should work no matter what ROM you run. It would certainly be nice at least.

working fine following Nexus Beam install and factory resets
Works well on stock rom with simple kernel.
But not all data restored... eg. launcher icons
Doesn't seem to work for me. Did a factory reset for the 4.0.4 update (from 4.0.3 using SEUS for my Lt18i) and absolutely nothing was restored not even WiFi passwords, OS settings etc.
Is there an option that I have to select to perform the restore?
With MIUI it was fine, but now I'm using AOKP and it doesn't work.

I have a Nexus S 4G w/ Sprint, rooted w/ Clockwork recovery. I'm running into problems using custom ROMs. Flashing any ROM goes fine; however the next time I reboot, my lockscreen PIN won't work, and it looks like I've been signed out of my Google account (based on an alert in the notification bar). I've tried CM7, BugglessPete's GRJ90 stock ROM, and ROM v1.1.1 ... tried a couple different kernels too. Each time I flash I do a full wipe, and everything seems peachy until I reboot the phone... so then I have to reboot into recovery and restore my stock backup nandroid. The new radio I flashed seems to work though.
So basically I've always resorted back to just using stock, which really doesn't bother me since Gingerbread + ADW is more than fine IMO. However now I wouldn't mind updating to 2.3.5, without losing root. And I would like to use CM7 when the next stable release comes out...
Thoughts? Thanks!
When you run cm7 or any other rom are you installing gapps and setting everything up again?
When u install a new rom you start with a fresh phone no saved info till you sign into Google.

when you do a full wipe, your settings get restored to factory settings. thats what a full wipe is, a factory reset. if you are just updating a rom, do not wipe. like if youre just updating to a newer cm, dont wipe. just update on top and your setting will stay. if youre updating from one rom to another completely different rom, then you have to wipe.

No I'm talking about flashing a new ROM, not just an update. And it works at first - I sign into google, restore my apps, etc. The problem arises the next time the phone reboots (no flashing or anything); after the reboot, my lockscreen code no longer works, as in I can't get past the lockscreen and into my phone, and it looks like I've been signed out of my Google account.
My girlfriend's Skyrocket starting tonight has been freezing while the screen is locked. It won't wake by pressing the button immediately, but opens briefly after maybe 30 seconds. I pull the battery and restart and it worked fine for about two hours and did it again.
Any ideas? I have her fix permissions but it keeps coming back.
I feel bad because she was fine with stock but I convinced her to let me root it!
Unlocked, rooted, stock rom.
wipe cache and dalvik cache? Any new apps or changes that have been done recently?

this happens to mine maybe once every two weeks, so it is so few and far between that i dont mind. using nexusmod gb.
whenever it freezes, i hold down the home button to see which apps are running and attempt to close them, but it takes too long and i just yank the battery. the only common app that is always running during every freeze is 'phone'.

Rooting wont freeze your phone, that's something to do with the ROM. Did you make a CMW backup before rooting? If yes, then you can boot into recovery, perform a factory reset 3 times, then wipe cache 3 times, then wipe davlik cache 3 times, then restore from the backup, reboot back to recovery and flash the radio (the ICS radio's ) work with GB so you can chose one from them.
If you haven't made a backup, you can download the stock 2.3.5 rom from sammobile, install it, and then do the update to 2.3.6.
Also dont restore apps, using Titanium backup, it causes issues. You can use superbackup to restore, call logs, sms and contacts, that's what I use.
If you would like to try a ICS rom, you can install Sky ICS 4.2E, there is an update 4.2F but it kept crashing so I am on 4.2E runs butter smooth as the stock GB.
All custom ROMS you can find in the Android Development Section
Unless she is going to run themes on AOSP, she probably won't get much other benefit from root. Sounds like she just wants stable, stock. I learned that lesson the hard way with my wife...every time she ran into a glitch! Otherwise, SkyICS is going to be your best bet for the least problems. My wife has been using it with no complaints... yet.

SkyICS 4.2F is running far more flawlessly than all other sky roms. The vast majority of users have no issues. It's based on an official release, not a leaked release. Those users with issues are normally at fault, not the rom; and these issues are usually easily fixed.
Don't be afraid of 4.2F.

I'm running stock jb and sadly its very laggy and many taps will result in many second of waiting. Even Google search takes ages to start.
Are the cyanogen Roms better? Is there already a working cm10 rom available?

I would give Jellybro a try. Seems to be fairly popular ROM based on CM10
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791751
Make sure you make a nandroid backup and know how to flash beforehand.
i agree! jellybro is the sastest jb rom here !

Since you need to wipe the phone either way, have you tried a factory reset yet? It's worth a shot. You never said whether or not you did. But if you're looking for more features all baked in, go with a custom ROM
I think CM9 is still faster overall although it isn't buttery smooth like JB or CM10.

My boot loader is already unlocked so I shouldn't have to wipe for root, right? I'm just not sure if CM10 is worth it. Don't know if nexus s is capable of keeping it fast with Android 4.x...
You should try the jellybro rom because its super fast.

Try doing a full wipe/system reset. My Nexus S OTA to JB a few weeks ago. Even at stock, it was fast. No lag.
If you are experiencing lags, it is likely your phone's filled with resource contending stuff.
BTW, I've seen flashed in CMREX Beta9 JB. Boot up is insanely fast. Everything works.
Also you can try the V6 Supercharger mod. It helped my other phone - Gingerbread equipped XT615 Motoluxe speed up quite nicely.

Mine runs very well on JB. You're already rooted and whatnot, all you need to do is backup via recovery. Properly wipe the phone and flash. There's a few 4.1 ROMs out there. Give them a shot and see what you like. The phone is still pretty quick despite its age. Like I said. The phone may just need to be cleaned up. I've never had mine lag, personally.
Should I wipe SD partition too? It takes ages to backup the SD partition to a PC first...doesn't seem to support USB 2.0...
I would try a factory reset first to see what happens...

From my understanding just do a factory reset/wipe, wipe the dalvik cache and then flash your ROM.

First try change kernel..
Nocerino's Rulez with RAScarlo's ROM features TriNitY
I've had the same issue and came here to see if others shared. JB was initially pretty solid (I initially did a full wipe), but now it lags real bad. Google Now is the worst offender. It takes at least 5 seconds to appear, and then a good chunk of time to allow me to input text. It's too much.
I'm going to keep looking for another ROM, but honestly, I was counting on the fact that stock would be the most reliable. I've also had trouble using my radio to make calls / use data. I'm disappointed as I figured these problems were previously mostly due to custom ROMs. All I want is a stable, simple ROM that functions consistently.
Google Now was fast for me initially but it's super slow now but I doubt this is a ROM issue.
Everything else is fast and smooth.

I think its time to upgrade...just waiting for a nexus without pentile screen.
Do a full wipe, clear cache
This is the best time to check as many roms as possible. no need to worry about losing anything as you should of backed it all up by now. So clean slate and try some different Roms. To say stock is laggy does sound strange. So back up everything, even whats on your SD.
Clean start.
Best backup program to save apps and data - Titanium backup
Best app for everything else (app manager, processes etc..) - Romtoolbox.
Now go have fun!
try Xenonhd v6.0 and Air kernel JB weekly.
My phone is better than new with this combo. I am not going to try anything else until these give me a serious issue (I dont think they will)
It started I think after I put the 1st JB TW ROM on my phone (eg Incubus). Since then, every time I try out any AOSP/AOKP based ROM I lose WiFi.
Wipe and format everything (data, cache, dalvik). Install AOSP/AOKP ROM, do the initial setup, get WiFi working and then after 1st reboot -> no WiFi. I tried many ROMs based on the above platform. Same thing.
If I toggle the wifi on/off/on some times I get the wifi back but just until the next reboot. Sometimes when I try to toggle the wifi screen freezes.
I odined back to stock. Unrooted and locked. I rooted and unlocked and right away I reinstalled a CM10. Same problem.
When that happens there is no wifi network found and scan finds nothing (i have many netorks around me). It is like the wifi service is not present.
I tried different kernels and different radios. No go.
All the TW stock ROMs (ICS or JB) work fine.
Any idea? Did you hear about this anywhere?
Thanks for your help.

Try wiping System before flashing AOKP as well. Wipe them a few times just to be sure. Im thinking that possibly recovery doesnt always wipe like it should but im not sure.
I did it.I tried too many times not to get it right at least 1 time.

Well, I have news. Problem not solved but something new came up.
I had a nand of an official cm10 from Sep the 9th. I recovered and voila the wifi works perfect. More than that. I dirty flashed the nightlie from today and everything works fine
I then wiped and format again everything and flashed the CM10 from today. WiFi lost again after 1-3 reboots.
By the way if I reboot after losing wifi next time I get a screen with activating which stays there forever. Also my phone no and MIN are gone.
I recovered them but the wifi is still gone.
I live in Ca so I'm in roaming if this is of some importancce.
Can somebody mimic this? Fresh install of CM10 official and then reboot.
It does the same for me for any AOSP AOKP JB based.
I have a netgear router that provides wifi service on 2.4 and 5 Ghz on both bands 20 and 40 Mhz. The SSIDs have different names.
I specified already that when that happen I cannot see any other wifi around me and there are many.
i flashed ics successfully but after the flash was having problems with absolutely no 4g connectivity. aside from that when i used titanium to restore my messaging it displayed my messages but if i try to open one to send a text a box comes up saying sorry messaging has closed. nothing really works. i cant restore my contacts, the browser doesn't work even with the wifi working etc. maybe these are all a result of having no 4g i dont know. if i can get that working maybe i can see if that is true otherwise maybe ill have to just go back to gb

when i start up i get; "unfortunately xxx has stopped". xxx = clock, email...
Re-flash the rom you have. Make sure you do a factory reset before you re-flash the rom though.
i re flashed after a factory reset and no more error boxes come up now but i still have no wireless service. do i need a separate kernel?
The likely reason your apps and services were crashing is the GB system data isn't directly compatible with ICS. For system data, you need to be very careful in what you restore and only do it with something like TiBackup with the proper options set. (migrate system data, or something like that)
Posted from my SGS4G, thanks to Team Acid development
so i would need to go back to stock froyo and reflash to a stock gb rom and, then a gb moded rom to get back to where i can recover my data? and then go from there if i want to try to go to ics? or, can i just flash a gb rom?
Just use a heimdall one click to get back to stock. The purple link in my signature is stock plus root. Then flash back to the rom you were using.
Hey hood,
I experienced the same problem right after I flashed ICS. All I did is reflashed ICS and when I restored using titanium backup I restored all my apps first. And when it came to my system data I believe I only restored my old Swype keyboard. When it comes to your contacts, you should be able to recover then from Google.
