From what I read [I haven't tried this yet],it says you may need to turn off your local network's firewall.
If your computer connects to the net' by PPP[dialup,xDSL or VPN],I Passthrough will only support TCP protocol.
I'm surprised your phone won't connect, but your computer will?
Have you tried aiming the antennas directly at the area you need to receive in - same as pointing a finger?
It's really surprising how much stronger the signal can get.

[Guide] Reverse USB Tethering

Hey Everyone,
I was searching all over Google and XDA to find an applicable solution to have reverse USB tethering enabled on my Captivate - I recall it was a default option in the stock JH6 it came with but afterwards, it was removed.
This is only for Windows based machines. I've tested this to work on my 32-bit Windows 7 laptop.
Now, before I go on, i'm going to mention some requirements to get this running:
*Rooted Captivate
*A console emulator - or program to apply a script
*USB Tethering in the Settings menu, most probably under "Wireless & Network"
*A Windows machine
*USB Drivers for your Captivate MUST be installed
There are two parts to getting this work, let's start by connecting the phone in "Debugging Mode" to the PC:
1.
Go to "Settings" --> "Wireless and networks" --> "Tethering" then select the check mark next to "USB Tethering"
2.
Open your console emulator - and type in the below:
su
netcfg usb0 dhcp
This will force the USB to obtain its IP Address/Info from the DHCP server.
On the Windows machine, you will need to apply the below:
1.
Network and Sharing Center --> Network Connections (Change Adapter Settings)
2.
Make note of your Samsung USB interface, mine is named "Local Area Connection 10" (SAMSUNG Android USB Remote NDIS Network Device)
3.
Select the Network interface that you would like to share - mine is "Wireless Network Connection", and go to its "Properties"
4.
Go to the "Sharing" tab
5.
Check the first box "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection"
6.
In the drop-down box, choose the interface that recflect's your Samsung's USB
7.
Apply & OK, you should be good to go.
If this works on your side, don't forget to hit the "Thanks" button.
I hope you all enjoy!!
Edit:
Added a script so that users are able to apply the script via GScript rather than use a console emulator.
Thats a good guide... It will work from your local pc... not from your office pc because connection sharing will be most likely be disabled!! Well, when at home, I already have my wifi connection to use. This would have been so good if we could do it at our office
Thanks for sharing!

If your office PC has wi-fi adapter in it and runs Windows 7, you can use this guide http://tameyourpc.blogspot.com/2009/07/windows-7-as-wireless-access-point.html to turn your PC into a wifi AP. That's what I did in my office using my office laptop.
Office PC does have wi-fi, but getting Windows 7??? It is like hoping to get Honeycomb on our captivate
Well, I dont really care much now, I use about 1.6 to 1.7 gigs a month of 3g even after hooking onto every free wifi spot I get! so I am good..
I love how I was trying to fond out how to do this last month; I cant connect to the school's wifi anymore so I had to upgrade my data plan.
However im definitely going to do this when I get back.

Glad I could help.. Sucks if you don't have admin privileges at your office PC
I kinda like to use this when i'm low on battery, or when my phone can barely get a Wifi signal, but the Laptop has a better one.. etc..

I'm using it just fine here, not sure if it could be that the PC you're connecting to uses a proxy/firewall/security suite or something that might be blocking off some sort of traffic..
Correct me if i'm wrong, but you can browse the net, right?
Interesting, thanks

yes, in fact, just upon removing the usb cable
i believe that even disabling/re-enabling usb tether should do the trick but i haven't tried it
Sorry to revive a dead thread, but is this method still usable? or does anyone has a better way to do reverse tethering by now?

Sorry for not checking back on this.
I still use it till the day on Andromeda 2.2 and it rocks

I don't get it? You could use you PC for internet stuff and your phone as a phone? I love my smartphone but if I'm near a computer, that's usually going to be used first for anything data.

In simple words, you could get your Captivate to use internet off your PC, rather than waste your battery on wireless, or your GBs on your data plan - or simply if there is no wireless network!

Didn't really worked, can you help me out?
I got
1) USB debugging mode on
2) plugged in my phone to the pc
3) ticked Tethering in settings
4) opened the app "terminal emulator"
5) keyed in
su
netcfg usb0 dhcp
6) Change adapter settings, and set to share, however I don't have the drop down box, so I'd figure it is on the advanced tab but I'm quite clueless to what to fill (I'm on windows 7)

Ok, so from the screenshots it seems you've got the wrong interface:
3.
Select the Network interface that you would like to share - mine is "Wireless Network Connection", and go to its "Properties"
Click to collapse
So that should be the interface you want to share, say your Ethernet or Wireless.
And I believe that you configure the PC side first, then the phone side...
Tell me if it works this way for you.
I lost you, you're on a window xp machine? mine doesn't read as wireless network but as local area connection, I did start from the phone side, but the settings on the adapter seems to stick after I unplug and everything. Can I have a few screenshots? Sorry for the trouble.

Reverse Tethering?

At work, there's no Wi-Fi and no T-Mobile signal.
Is there a way to use my PC's network connection to provide data to my phone? I have a rooted Android phone.
I´m also looking for this.
It is the same thing we can do with ActiveSync in Windows Mobile: you get internet access trough your PC...
I hope someone can help us with any clue.
Thank you.

Hi both of you!
It's called ad hoc network, if you have Vista or Windows 7, do like this:
Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Set up a new connection or network -> Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer to computer network) -> Follow instructions!
Good luck
You forgot to mention the tiny problem that Android has do damn Ad-Hoc support....
honestly just try starting your own network go grab a wifi dongle thats capable and go from there that or get a wireless router and try that sharing the internet connection to the router OR bluetooth connection if your phone is capable ! many different ways ive tried them all but usb tethering ive never heard of out side of wm os
It is possible...
I wrote about this before. It is possible to do via usb cable if you use Sense as it is a standard feature in Sense connection... Just plug in and you can choose to use PC internet connection.
I have done it a lot with my PC

My custom rom (x10 mini pro) support ad hoc as far as i know.
Connectify
If you are using Windows7, you might want to take a look at Connectify. Just google "connectify for windows". I can't post outside links yet.
Direct from their website:
Take any Internet connection and share it wirelessly with no additional hardware, wires, plugs, or chargers
Easily connect any number of Wi-Fi enabled devices to your network including desktop computers, laptops, phones, gaming systems, and more
Don't break the bank paying for multiple Wi-Fi connections on the road, Connectify is ad-supported and free to download and use.

Adhoc can be made to work
Check this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755254
Of course this would need a wifi dongle in your work PC, will admins allow that?
in the newer roms with gingerbread it's an option to do this when you plug in your phone.

[Q] Ad-hoc WiFi

Hi,
was anyone successful with ad-hoc wifi patch? I've tried several wpa_supplicant versions, none of them worked.
I can't use connectify on my laptop, because of my Intel card

I'm not really familiar with ad hoc wifi? Is that where you use your phone as a modem via wifi?? If so mine's worked fine from day one... on version 10b and 10d
yes, that is one kind of ad-hoc, called tethering. What I meant was actually the opposite of it - sharing internet connection from my laptop to my phone.
If you have intel card try with intel My WiFi.
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA App
The easy way...
I have the LG Optimus 3D and I wanted to use my old WinMo phone as an ad-hoc server to provide my LG as well as my laptop with 3G internet. I searched a lot and finally found the solution. Yes you may try to replace the wpa-supplicant but there is an even easier way:
First of all you need a rooted device.
Then simply go to Market and install "ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher". Run this program everytime you want to connect to ad-hoc.
Press the button to change to ad-hoc mode.
The device acting as server needs to have its SSID set to "AndroidTether" and require no password.
Don't forget to revert back to "infrastructure" mode after ending your session otherwise you won't be able to connect to normal hotspots.
maybe its been solved for some any of the user, but I still wanna ask this, can anyone tell me how to make my device support the ad-hoc wifi?
I try the app above but I get no luck.
thx..
Try this http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/releases/view/36035

I'm using Connectify on my laptop - the free edition hardly makes my phone to stay connected for 3 minutes.
Maryfi - too "messy" to even get it started
Virtual router works and not...sometimes it does work but mostly not.
I've also tried reverse tethering - a free app on google play but I couldn't get over the first step.

None whatsoever, just a PC running Windows 7. (Won't run on XP or Vista).
Incredibly easy to use and setup.

[Q] WiFi won't work, no matter what!

Hi,
I've just received my Samsung Focus AT&T Unlocked, everything's look good except WiFi won't work, no matter what I do. I've tried all suggestions posted online..
Did NoDo update
Tried WPA
Tried WPA2
Tried with No Security (Open Network)
Tried the channels 6, 9 and 11
Even reset the Router
Reset the Phone
I'd really appreciate any help, WiFi is a must for me!
Many thanks for your help!
You did NOT provide enough information so we can't help you.
Eg. Does your phone give an error connecting or does it not detect WiFi at all? Does your WiFi works elsewhere such as your office?
Oh sorry.
Phone detects all available networks, but can't join/use them. The error is:
"Connection Unsuccessful - Your phone couldn't reach the WiFi network xyz"
Yes, tried creating a network with my Macbook and joining, but that didn't work either.
Have you tried to connect using Wired connection (when your phone is connected to PC with Zune launched)? I just want to make sure that connecting to internet and getting and IP is not the problem.

Yes, that works. So I turned off 'Data Connection' from settings, connected to PC and opened Zune. I can access internet on the phone, even checked the IP, it seems to be using the PCs connection. Removed the USB cable, and there's no internet.
So yes, that works which confirms that there's physical fault in the phone, just a bug?

I had similar problem with my university wireless connection. After several access with Zune, the problem was fixed. And by the way, it may not be a hardware problem since your device detects the available network.
Perhaps you need to visit a phone shop.

Ah, thats a relief to know. And since windows is not officially available in my country, there are no shops.
I'm expecting one of the experts here to chime in and help, or someone who has experienced and resolced this issue before.
Thanks
Can you please tell me your router's mode, channel, fragmentation, treshold values. Maybe that'll help.
Anyone? WiFi not working is so annoying!
I'd really appreciate any help with this.
Try connecting to WiFi at your office or somewhere else.
I also have the Samsung Focus and it won't connect to a certain router no matter how I configuration the router.
