I tried to install a signed .zip package using stock 3e recovery, but got the following error:
E: signature verification failed
install_package = (2)
Installation aborted
Shouldn't 3e recovery allow signed zip installations... or only those signed as 'official' samsung packages? I know I can use CWM and disable signature verification, but thought 3e allowed any signed zip installs?
I got around the issue by pulling the .apk out of the signed .zip package and using RootExplorer to place in /system/app (and corrected permissions); but for future reference, wondering why I got the "E: signature verification failed" error from a signed package? Thanks.

Recovery 3E has never allowed any zips that are not signed by Samsung. 2E allowed zips to be done by naming them update.zip and reinstalling packages.

P_ghost: thanks for the clarification. I do recall the 'update.zip' days. I also seem to recall on my Infuse there was a "modified" 3e recovery which must have allowed for non-Samsung signed packages. Other than CWM, do you know if a modified 3e recovery exists for the Skyrocket?

Agree... however "working" is the operative word... with all the SR threads concerning CWM recovery (based on T-Mo), multiple wipes, and boot-loop errors, I've been hesitant to flash the T-Mo CWM Recovery... hoping for a Recovery specifically designed for our SR - I727.

I think CWM has some issues with clearing caches. CWM should be able to fix permissions so there is something not right with it IMHO. It does work for installing roms and backing up but it could use some tweaking.

Moot point... this thread is 10 months old! At the time (January2012) I was running stock odexed ROM and stock 3E recovery... and was trying to install TransMarket 3.4.4 (Inverted Vending)... Stock 3E recovery does not allow non-samsung signed zip installs. I got around this by extracting the apk from the zip and using root explorer to install. Since then, I've flashed numerous customer recovery partitions and custom roms.. so this issue no longer exists.

I'm a bit confused, what do you mean by "phones USB is broke"? Is it the USB connector at the bottom of your phone that's broken? Did you try a different USB cable? Do you connect to a power charger or PC? Do you have USB debugging enabled?

Official updates are usually cryptographically signed, so I wouldn't count on using the built-in recovery in that manner.
However, before writing off the USB port, have you tried using Odin. It works at a much lower level than the OS.
Sorry, can't do.
My main PC is dead, bricked (won't detect any HDD at all) so my only option right now is public computers which don't allow the installation of the drivers that Odin requires. I get it in DL mode quite easily, but Odin won't see it unless the drivers are all set and ready to go.
Note: It's a Galaxy Centura and I managed to get the stock ROM, all I need is for it to be signed. Is there any way I can get it signed? It's a 200+MB ROM...

How could I get one from Samsung? Is there anybody that anybody knows, or is there a website?
Who would I email, or would they care?
I apologize for asking all these questions.
What about Google?
When I bricked my phone and lost my Google account I emailed them with an alternate email and they reset my account password. Would that be worth a shot?

What custom ROM? I hope you aren't trying to flash a i9000 ROM onto this.
Nope, I came across an HTC sense and some i9000 live wallpapers and to install them we need to flash their zip files from the recovery mode. The 3e recovery mode performs sign check and that's an head ache. Every time the update.zip fails to install.
Use adb or root explorer or any file manager with root access and having ability for mounting system partition.

It boots me into thesamsung recovery screen, not cwm. Thamx for the reply.

In that case, you'll need a modified 3e file in order to get CWM up and running instead of Samsung recovery: Modified 3e Tutorial
I tried the modified 3 e file. I renamed it and and copied it to the root of the sd card.. Reboot into recovery and selected reinstalled packages once.. It gave me the error of saying the file does not exist on mnt/internal_sd card selected reinstall packages and same error. No luck here been trying it for days. Thnx for the reply.

Find and follow the ultimate unbrick instructions. It'll get you rooted and have cwm.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997R using XDA Premium App
are you using Rom manager to get CWM
if so, i have noticed that i have the same problem unless i do everything twice, including the install CWM portion.
i have install CWM 2 times, the reboot into recovery and install packages 2 times to get to the CWM Recovery.
otherwise yes i would say just flash the Ultimate Unbrick and get into it that way.
I did use ultimate unbrick.. supposedly to go back to stock. Some file from serendipity infused rom are still on my phones, cant get rid of it. And now the base is uckd5.. what dies that mean. I did partition when doing ultimate unbrick.. and do I have to root again? Confused here. Thanks for the reply.

.......infuse.....Infused....infusion.........
You forgot to adjust the permissions of your new recovery file.
then dont use the Ultimate Unbrick, use another back to stock method. i use gtg's other Md5sum with odin to flash back to stock after i use the Ultimate unbrick because the ultimate unbrick does not allow unsigned packages, so i run the Ultimate then i Run his other Back to stock to get past the unsigned error and Flash the Update.Zip that Rom manager makes to get into CWM......
after that i just WIPE and FLASH like crazy........lol
if i get hung up i just rinse and re-use.

you just go to install zip from SD card, then select choose zip (maybe those are in reverse order - i'm not in recovery right now, so this is just from memory, but you should get the gist), then find where you saved the serendipity zip on your SD card, select it, go to yes... and that should be it, assuming you are coming from stock froyo.
I went to install zip from sd card but I dont see the S7 zip file. I did copy it to the root of the sd card cuz when I reboot back to system I see that its there but not when I try to install it from sd card in cwm. Hmmm anyone.. Help.

Samsung recovery utils

Umm open rom manager and it says "flash clockworkmod recovery" so do that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
okay, i think where the problem is. nothing happened after choosing "flash clockwormod recovery" it just says "successfully downloaded clock recovery", phone is idle afterward. something wrong? I got newer fixed model of samsung captivate at&t with froyo.
I already did couple of tries, however, first time I did, I initially chose Samsung Captivate (MTD), but there was a warning message that said "clockworkmod is not availbla for this blah blah blah" but i went ahead and hit yes it downloaded it anyways. since then it now says current recovery: clockworkmod 2.5.1.2. Phone is definitely going to android recovery.
thanks,
Okay found following trick:
Installation instructions:
1. Download ROM Manager from the Market.
2. Flash Recovery.
3. Choose Captivate as your phone.
4. Accept the Superuser prompt.
5. Use ROM Manager to create a Backup.
6. On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
7. Watch the backup go!
I had to choose "reinstall packages" after choosing backup current rom. However, if I choose that option it says "E:failed to verify whole-file signature, E:signature verificaiton failed. Installation aborted." Thanks,

vol up + vol down + usb cable plug-in goes to downlading... screen but that is as far as it goes. stuck there forever. any help?
are you expecting to just boot into download mode and then fixes itself?
download mode is for, oddly enough, DOWNLOADING firmware onto the phone. you need to use a program such as odin or heimdall....
this phone is over a year old, every thing you are trying to do has been covered in about 1,000,000,000 threads at this point in the devices lifespan, SEARCH, READ, READ, READ.
Got it! Started odin3 first and put it into download mode. Now it flashed Eclair into my phone. I wonder if GPS fix was in the phone hardware or in the software?
Oh god.

Hi there,
I own a Rogers Samsung Infuse. I rooted and flashed CM9 onto my phone yesterday. Long story short, had an issue with Google Apps, and ended up with a phone that would constantly boot to the CWM Recovery screen.
I was able to use ODIN3 to get my phone back to stock, but could not flash CM9 (or anything) with CWM as I was (and still am) getting the:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I tried using this: Odin - Stock (100% or Root+3e), but the phone kept getting stuck at the Samsung screen.
I tried watching the modified e3 recovery video on youtube, but my recovery file is sitting in the root folder, and not in system/bin where it should be. I ignored the location of the file, replaced it with the modified e3 recovery file, but when I rebooted my phone, it's as if the changes didn't take place.
I've been digging (maybe not hard enough) for a solution to this problem. CM9 looked fantastic for the 5 minutes I had it on my phone.
What can I do now?
It sounds to me like you lost cwm recovery if you want to flash cm9 you need to flash the ics recovery file. Doesn't verify signature verification
