How should you flash a rom and a kernel? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are the steps should u flash a kernel right after you flash a from or should you reboot then flash the kernel thanks for your help!
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium

Hi There,
I always flashed the kernel right after flash the rom and haven't got any issues.

For a new rom, data factory reset, format /system and format /boot then flash straight away most of the time. For an upgrade, only wipe cache and dalvik cache.
For a kernel it depends, but generally just cache and dalvik cache will be fine.

Wipe cache and Dalvik cache before flashing ROM as well. I do wipes 2 or 3 times..

I always do a double wipe before flashing any new rom and do a dalvik/cache-wipe before flashing a new kernel
For that i use the attached filed. Just flash via recovery (any). Helps to do it a little bit faster like doing in manual

[Q] What to wipe when installing new kernel at Nexus S with CM7?

Hi!
At my Nexus S I do use CM7 nightly #144 atm. Now I would like to try CM7 with Netarchy's kernel 1.3.7 (Netarchy Nexus - 1.3.7-cfs-2.3.4-universal (Universal for non-stock 2.3.4 roms)).
I backed up everything using ClockworkMod 3.0.2.4 as well Titanium Backup Pro.
When downloading the 1.3.7 kernel I place it in root at sd card and now I have some questions:
Which kind of wipes do have to do (or should I do)? And when? Before updating or after updating?
wipe data/factory reset? (I guess no?)
wipe cache?
wipe dalvik cache?
Do I have to use "fix permissions" after the update?
Thanks in advance =)
For flashing a new kernal
Boot into recovery...
Wipe cache...
Wipe dalvik cache...
Flash kernal...
Reboot...
As always make a nand backup just in case...

if the kernel is compatible with the rom, i dont think you have to wipe anything
When flashing a new kernel wipe the cache and dalvik cache. Neaither one of these will erase any of your data so it is always best to be on the safe side when flashing and erase both of these for good measure.

Thanks a lot!
Btw, does a full wipe/factory reset wipes also dalvik?

Tutorial for flashing/installing a kernel

Hi
I just bought my first android phone which is a Google Nexus S, and I guess flashing/installing (I never know which is the correct term to describe this action!) a kernel from XDA can give better performance or some extra features, e.g. BLN
However, I don't seem to be able to find a complete tutorial of how to flash/install a kernel, can anyone help me with this please?
Thanks in advance
First you need root.
Reboot into recovery and wipe Dalvik cache maybe twice.
Then find the kernal in your SD and install
Reboot

wipe dalvik cache once. then proceed to flash kernel

Wiping cache does not delete your data.
Unlocking the bootloader to get a custom recovery will wipe everything.

so in this case, flashing a kernel will NOT delete my data, correct? since I don need custom recovery, and I have already rooted
U dont need to wipe cache. Simply wipe delvik cash then flash your kernel on your sensation.

You don't have a custom recovery? I suppose you could use Flash Image GUI but you're really gonna wanna get a custom recovery. Especially since you want to make a backup before you flash in case something goes awry.
*if you didn't wipe /system and /boot it is NOT A FULL WIPE*
Doesnt matter just wipe dalvik cache and ur good. Through custom recovery

clockwork recovery is the base for flashing anything.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
use this guide to install CWM(See Part 3 of the Guide)
once done just wipe dalvik cache in CWM and flash any kernel .zip file
you dont need to wipe dalvik cache, cache, or anything else. as these dont have anything to do with the kernel. you can flash kernels via recovery(in .zip form), or with fastboot/terminal emulator(in boot.img form).

[Q] Stuck on HTC Logo after Flashing Rom (HTC Flyer)

HTC Flyer: Rooted with S-off, with Revolutionary CMW 4.0.1.4
At the first attempt, I flashed the SU.zip and got the tablet working. But then i decided to flash the Leedroid rom.
Within revolutionary, i wipe the data/cache/davche and then flash the new leedroid rom. There are no issues on flashing the rom and it was successful, however when i reboot.... it is stuck on the HTC logo screen. After 20-30 minutes, the tablet just shuts itself off.
Due to this, i decided the wipe again and install a different rom (CoolHoney3D) however same issue. Then i decided to go back to original SU.zip and that is not working now as it has the same issue.
I downloaded the recovery image for the HTC flyer and try to install it with Scottsrom. No LUCK
I believe i am missing a step in the whole process. please let me know what the problem is. I read all the tutorial to do the recovery but i am a noob and couldnt figure it out. sorry for my bad english..
Thanks!

Which option is full wipe?
I did 3 types of wipe (System/Cache/Dache Cache) then installed the roms again. It said the Rom installed correctly but still got stuck at the HTC screen. Like i said, i installed the original su.zip again and that doesnt work anymore
Another question, do I have to install su.zip first before installing the leedroid rom?
This is what I do when I flash a Rom
Wipe dalvick cache
Format cache
Format data
Format system
Flash Rom

Try wiping the dalvik cache after flashing the rom.

I will try that. Should I.....
1. Flash the SU.zip rom first
2. Flash the CoolHoney3D rom
3. Wipe Dalvik cache
4. Reboot
or skip the su.zip rom

Skip the "su.zip". So just flash the "CoolHoney3D" rom, wipe the dalvik cache, then reboot. You could format all partition before flashing the rom if you haven't already done so. In other words:
- Format partitions
- Flash the rom
- Wipe the dalvik cache
- Reboot

[Q] custom ROM boot problem!

Hey everyone,
I'm a new-by to the tech world. I have a "google nexus s" running on ICS 4.0.4, I recently rooted my phone, flashed clockworkmod recovery and tried to install CM9 on my device. After the installation was completed through the clockworkmod, the boot image had showen up and continued to boot throughout the night and never showed up the home screen nor did the custom ROM open itself.
Can anyone give me a lil help as to about what this problem is or the reason why this is happening?
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanx!
Did you do a full wipe and cache wipe? My suggestion is to do that and reinstall. You could also try a different ROM.
But wouldnt I loose my phone data if I do that?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
i'm having the same problem for every ROM i try on my phone! what to do?
You have a bootloop, this appears because of kernel (boot.img) problems and/or inconsistent cache.
Please wipe/erase cache and Dalvik cache (this can be found in the Advanced menu). Wiping cache partition and Dalvik cache won't erase your personal data.
Make sure the previously flashed CM zip contained a boot.img file. If not, please flash a proper/recommended boot.img (kernel; which is in a zip file) or another rom (with boot.img).
When you flash a new rom over your stock.. first make a backup, then you need to wipe data, cache and dalvik cache..

[Q] After flash purity rom , it takes forever to first boot up?

Already wipe Factory data, successfully flash purity ROM and gaps. After reboot. It stuck on the logo for 20 mins..... .and now still loading....
I already reboot the phone. Re flash the ROM again twice but the same thing happened
It's it normal? ?
Finally it takes over 50 mins but still in the four color circles.... I reboot and restore backup from cwm. (Lucky I backup before flash!!)
I am running on stock rom with franco r16 kernel.

I did not have a issue flashing latest purity clean install. Maybe a bad download/md5...
A bad download can finish installation also ?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
did you wipe data/factory reset before flashing? you have to..
First install was a dirty flash but second time already wiped.
Do I need to wipe dalvik cache also ?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Yes if you only did Data...
if you were already on purity than a dirty flash will suffice.
if you were not on purity then you need to perform a full wipe (data, system, dalvik, cache).
EDIT: i had typed full backup above. i obviously meant full wipe.
Thx .
So I need to "wipe data / factory reset" & "wipe dalvik cache " in cwm recovery , then flash new purity rom
Will it erase my files in sd storage ? eg mp3, jpeg movies ?

make a backup. make sure you have a copy of everything you want to save/keep on your computer. full wipe (twrp = data, system, dalvik, cache. cwm = wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, format /system). flash rom and gapps.
when you're coming from the stock firmware or a different rom, you have to perform a full wipe before flashing.
Use all yours methods. (Wipe issues) And still not able to boot up. Not the issue of gapps. Coz I only flash the purity rom, and reboot, but still stuck in the four color circle for over 15 mins.
Finally I decided to give up and return to stock ROM.

Same Issue.
OMG! I though I was the only one facing this issue.
This has happend to me exactly as mentioned on the first post.
I was using purity Rom from 08/01 build & with every update I never had any problem But recently I decided to erase everything & do a factory Image procedure which obviously erases everything.
So after factory image I wanted to return to purity Rom & got stuck on booting logo for ever.
I followed the steps exactly the same as mentioned in above post.
