Mobile Data turning off during standby automatically problem - Motorola Milestone Android Development

I've been unable to get around this problem for the last few weeks now.
No matter what ROM my Milestone is on (It's the latest CM7 right now), it's been having problems keeping the mobile (2G/3G) data connection on, it seems lose connection every time the phone goes into standby.
At first I thought I was just losing connection to gtalk but I've caught the phone a few times coming out of standby with the data icon missing and then showing up a second later.
Other basic details;
I always flash the Singapore baseband from OR (which AFAIK is the same for Malaysia)
No battery saving apps
No Toggle2G use
WIFI has no data connectivity issues
I'm hoping someone can help me figure out this problem as it's a real killer to not get txts (gmail/whatsapp/etc), emails etc on-time

Going to try to leave wifi off for a day instead of a few hours for a better battery status screenshot but you can see what's happening in this one

In the period without wifi, and the period with actually, you can see I keep losing 3G/sync. This happens whether I'm moving or in the same location. Hell, it happens even at home.
Anyone think that flashing all the way back to stock froyo etc might help?
Are there any log files I should be looking at or posting for someone to help me with to figure out wtf?
I should also mention that this screenshot is from a FRESH flash of the latest CM7 from kabaldan, so I've ruled out (many many many times) that it's just a bad flash, or a bad rom (it does this on HO!NO!, FroyoMOD, milaq's cm6 and kabaldan's cm7 and probably others as well but those are the ones I've tried)
At this rate I'll get a new phone just for my sanity

I have the exact same problem with froyomod! help please!

update
I've flashed back to stock then to GOT 2.2.1 then to CM7 and it seems to have improved things by a lot on the first day. You can still see it happening however.

Looks like going to Stock -> GOT 2.2.1 -> CM7 has fixed my issue. More time needed but looks good already, I'm going to put down momentary loss of connection/3G as normal network issue rather than made by the phone now.
As you can tell, the last 2 screenshots have improved tremendously since re-flashing from stock
gosunta,
get on it, just follow the sticky'd posts.

I may have spoke too soon, it's still no good. New screenie in 6 or so hours to see if it continues.

Yep it's still doing it. It's worse when on the move and it obviously only notices its not connected/in-sync whenever I wake it up. I actually dropped the phone today and apart of me kinda hoped it would break so I could justify a new phone hahah .
Going to try going back a few versions of CM7 and see if that fixes it. Sick of this.

I had an idea a few hours ago of replacing the modded Talk (as included in Kabaldan's cm7 gapps or Ho!no! etc) for the stock one, so I went ahead and flashed gapps-gb-20110828-signed from the CM7 page.
Seems good so far over the last 2-3 hours, will report back in a day or two with screenshots. I hope this works. Also, if it does work I'm just going to go ahead and kill myself after all the flashing over and over of millions of roms (or so it feels hehehe)

There is no modding done to Google apps itself in the package I upload. Modding gapps is a bad idea, you would destroy the signatures by it, they need to match.
Only the updater script and app choice is modified.
Try to add this:
Code:
service dhcpcd_rmnet0 /system/bin/dhcpcd -ABKL
class post-zygote_services
disabled
oneshot
service iprenew_rmnet0 /system/bin/dhcpcd -n
class post-zygote_services
disabled
oneshot
to /system/etc/rootfs/init.mapphone_umts.rc like it can be seen here:
https://github.com/nadlabak/android...rebuilt/etc/rootfs/init.mapphone_umts.rc#L539
Let me know if it helped.
Btw., do you get connection to google servers at all when you switch to 2g only?

Hahah yeah I've just realised that your gapps isn't the issue, my bad kabs . It's still having the same problem now, lemme try your suggestion right now.
And yes, I do have connection to google servers while on 2g only.
edit in a few minutes.

Excuse the late reply as I've been busy but I figured it'd give me more screenshots of testing kabaldan's suggestion but...
Also note how the brown bars tend to correlate to when the phone is awake and even happening while the phone is awake.
It's still happening but I've noticed that the phone is at least capable of getting out of 2G and into 3G with some network activity which it has always done after sometime of use, get stuck in 2G and then I'd have to manually toggle it back despite WCDMA preference and no Toggle2G or Battery Saver usage.
I've noticed that I'm less likely to be disconnected from gtalk now though, it still happens obviously. My last chrome2phone sent link I waited 2 minutes with no response until I brought it out of standby and proceeded to use dropbox (thereby, I guess, it prompting to check connection to things...).
Kind of hankering to upgrade phones at this point but with the majority of phones being retail here and the fact that even a pre-order special of the Galaxy Nexus from my telco with a 24 month contract only results in saving less than 50EUR over retail, it would seem kind of stupid to get most phones still since everything is on the cusp of changing over the ICS :-/. Also STILL no droid3 here and I guess quite a few of us Milestone users love QWERTY like me

Same **** different day. Everyday. Going to now try updating to the newest CM7 and see if it still does it, been very busy (and disheartened by this issue as well) I only just noticed Kab's has 7.1.4 up.
I think I'm just going to start saving for a new phone

Have you tried using Toggle 2G/3G and setting 2G when screen is off? Yes, I know, it is not the solution, but, you would not gain anything using 3G with screen off and it would avoid this crazy 2G/3G/2G loop you get... I believe it is a decent work around.
By the way, in Brazil I got the same issue, only to realize that my phone carrier/operator is the one to blame, they have sold too much lines and their 3G connection is totally unrealiable due to that... When I saw that many of my friends were having the same issue with this carrier, then I've noticed that it was not the phone causing this issue... Perhaps somehow you are having the same issue, or, perhaps, someone build anything new between you and the tower causing this unrealiable connections (or perhaps you really have an issue). Are you sure you have flashed the proper baseband for your region? I believe CM7 comes with European Baseband (900/2100) which I believe is not the best for you....

The toggle2g suggestion might work, I'll look into it and see if it does it. However, I do think that I'm losing sync with g-chat even over 2G occasionally as well but I'll check anyway to be sure.
It seems to me that it specifically loses the data connection whenever the screen is off, as if its got a similar setting that it goes to sleep like "Wifi off when sleep". The actually annoying part is that when it does lose sync, it takes quite sometime before it gets it again (sometimes doesn't) or until I wake it. It looks like a loop but it clearly often matches against the Awake bars as well, ie the phone only noticing its not in sync (or 3g) when the phone is awaken.
Definitely don't have carrier problems, ruled that out as there's 3 others on same carrier at home without issue. Euro baseband seems to be the same thing but I always flash to Singapore anyway just to be sure.
I'll keep testing, I thought 7.1.4 CM7 update might fix this but it seems to be doing the same thing anyway . That reminds me that I need to try an older ROM and see if that helps.

kabaldan,
Any chance that if SU was denying radio permission that it would do this?
I've just noticed that in my SU logs radio keeps getting denied. In fact it has occurred to me that I haven't seen the Radio Allow/Deny SU screen every time I flash for some time now. I guess it gets stuck behind the setup-wizard screen and times out :-/
I'm reflashing to current CM7 right now and then if it happens again will Clear Data on SU and see if the radio permission screen comes up again and then check if its fixed my ****.

"Radio" asking for root permissions is Toggle2G.

Thanks for clearing that up for me kabaldan <3
I think I'm just going to assume my 3G radio is defective for now and put up with it.

Found this
http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/issues/detail?id=116
Uninstalled it and reflashed.
Testing now. Looks good so far in battery stats.
EDIT:
Nope, not that either. OK I give up . It's definitely only doing it whenever it goes to Standby however. I've been running Sleep as Android lately to track my sleep cycles and it never loses sync when the screen is awake (the screen dims to minimum so that the app can track sleep, thus meaning the phone is always awake)

Any news on that issue? I'm having the same problem.

I'm having trouble with 3g and battery, my phone normally lasts for 16hs aprox with 6 hours of wifi and little / medium use, and I do not have a mobile data plan, so I never use it.
But, whenever I use 3g, my battery drops from 100% to 0% in less than 5 hours of almost "idle" and even with the screen off , it starts to heat like if I were playing Nova2 with a Walkie Talkie .
This is a battery problem or the mobile is not working properlly ?
Thanks

[Q] Nexus S & WIND Mobile 3G Connection Issues

Hello folks,
I am having a couple of really strange and frustrating issues with my Nexus S on WIND Mobile (GTA). I've read a few posts and while some of the issues seemed similar, they did not really capture the exact issues and did not have any real fixes. I am hoping that I am not alone with these issues and that there may be a fix at some point. Considering that Samsung does not honor the SNS warranty in Canada, I am SOL if these issues are just with this particular device.
My Nexus One does not have these issues. (Don't get me wrong, my Nexus One still has issues with WIND's network at times, but I have not been able to reproduce these particular issues on the Nexus One).
Anyways, on to the issues:
1) Connecting to 3G after a reboot is sporadic.
Issue: After reboot, the phone makes several attempts to activate the 3G data connection. The 3G icon appears for a second or two, the uplink arrow lights up and then the 3G icon disappears. The phone will wait for a 30 seconds up to 5 minutes and then repeats the attempt to establish the 3G data connection. More often than not, it will connect. However, at times, it will continue this cycle for 30 minutes; sometimes it won't connect at all.
Steps to reproduce: Turn phone off/on by holding power button or by pulling battery and reinserting.
Steps taken to attempt to fix:
- factory reset (Helps for the first boot - phone connects almost right away. Subsequent boots have the above mentioned issue.)
- wipe cache (no effect)
- triple-checked APN settings
- set WCDMA-Only via Testing menu and update SMSC (I saw this thread here but it didn't fix my issue.)
- setting network selection to Auto
- setting network selection to 302490
- turning Airplane mode on/off after reboot does not help establish 3G connection (edit 2011-01-25 @ 12:39 EST)
2) 3G Data connection hangs with uplink
Issue: At random times, usually after extended periods of inactivity I will unlock the phone and find that the 3G icon in green (as if it is connected to Google's servers correctly) and the uplink arrow lit up in green as if some sort of data activity is occuring. However, opening up the browser (or any other app that uses data for that matter) will result in a time-out error as if the data connection is not working. The uplink arrow will stay lit up anywhere between 1 to 10 minutes. After this time, the 3G icon will turn gray and data will once again start working.
Steps to reproduce: Sporadic; extended periods of inactivity and potentially walking through an area with bad coverage will trigger this issue.
Steps taken to attempt to fix:
- turning Airplane mode on/off (Turning Airplane mode on causes the data connection to hang entirely forcing a reboot. Airplane mode will not actually turn on and will not be possible to turn off. Have to reboot to restart connection.)
- placing phone call to test network (Sometimes call will connect, other times call will hang at "Connecting". At that point it is impossible to disconnect the call; pressing end call results in "Disconnecting" forever. Only a reboot will reset data and phone app.)
- turning 2G only on (see Airplane mode)
I am hoping that somebody can coroborate these issues and/or point me towards a fix. (Are there any custom ROMs that have shown better 3G performance?)
Thanks!
I have experienced the second issue state-side but I also have not been able to explain it. Instead of rebooting for the first issue have you tried toggling airplane mode?

Edited first post - unfortunately, Airplane mode does not help.
The only problem i've found so far is...
but probably you refer to no signal after it gets disconnected, and airplane mode doesn't help
if that's the case, i have the same problem
the only way to fix it, is to reboot the phone
my Moto XT720 doesn't have that problem
no 3G problem like you described on the SNS
specially these steps
- set WCDMA-Only
- setting network selection to 302490
- turning Airplane mode on/off after reboot does not help establish 3G connection
also no problem with this

The strange thing is that after the reboot, and the initial 3G connection is established and held - then the subsequent drops in connection aren't problematic.
Meaning:
I reboot the phone ->
- wait for it to establish a stable 3G connection ->
- walk into an elevator where there is no reception at all ->
- walk out of the elevator back into an area with reception ->
- the phone reconnects to 3G without a problem.
It seems that only the initial connection is the issue.
I am able to reproduce this 100% of the time.

I'm not sure about how you got the phone (meaning where you bought it) but it sounds like there might be an issue with your 3G radio.

in my case, it's only when i lose the voice connection, then i can't get anything back, until i reboot the phone
that is only if i completely lose the signal
but if it's brief, then it will automatically reconnect just fine, and maintain 3G
it might very well be a BUG with the SNS
as my XT720 doesn't experience this problem
and Airplane mode On/Off will make it reconnect right away, without having to reboot the phone, in the worse case scenarios
but the SNS handles it poorly if you ask me, and Airplane mode seems like it has no effect at all on making the SNS to regain a signal

I bought it from a dude on Craigslist.
I called Samsung - apparently the S/N is under warranty, but I would have to ship the phone from and to a US domestic address in order to get warranty service. Samsung's warranty unfortunately, does not cross borders.
Here's to hoping that there is a firmware fix for this issue. Maybe someone comes up with a solution in a ROM.
I will keep my fingers crossed or just stick to my Nexus One.

The shipping to/from an American address was what I was getting at. It sucks but it might be your only option if it is indeed a faulty 3G radio.
i'm pretty sure it's a software driver BUG, and not a hardware issue
it is not like, it is not working, it is working, it just kinda sucks at regaining the signal after it is lost
as if, it doesn't even try to get the signal back
if the hardware was not running, then it would not even get signal at all

Yeah a bug in the radio for sure, if you are in a area with no signal for an extended period of time (5-10 minutes) the radio basically dies, and the only way for you to get a signal again is to reboot the phone.'
I've worked around this problem by using tasker and setup a task to cycle airplane mode before the radio dies ( after the radio dies airplane mode doesn't work anymore like you said)
So tasker basically waits for no service, if no service cycle airplane mode, wait 5 minutes, if no service repeat. And it'll keep doing it until service is required.

I'm going to have to try this. I live in a low service area and it had never occurred to me why after rebooting I would get texts.

YES! THAT'S IT !!!!
I noticed exactly the same thing!!!
if i know i'll be heading into an area known to have no connection, i usually turn ON airplane mode
then when i get back out, and turn it back ON, it works right away.
i wasn't sure before, but now that i know this, it sounds like a viable work around
there's actually an app that can do that automatically... searching appbrain to find it
i used it in the past with SGS, which had a similar bug, but then i uninstalled it, after the SGS radio bug was fixed
here i found it !!

Unfortunately, this won't solve my particular issue.
When the 3G refuses to connect on boot, I usually have full reception.
However, I am going to give this app a go due to the potential battery savings.

Couldn't get tasker to work but I got NoBars working. Seems to be a great idea since Cell Standby is a HUGE drain on my batt. Thank you AllGamer!
i set it to give up in 30 sec
and to retry every 10 min
so if it still has no signal in 30 sec
it waits another 10 min to try
this is a pretty good compromise to keep the RADIO ON in case of incoming calls, yet keeping the battery and dead radio bug when there is no signal for too long... example getting into the Subway system

Exactly how I set it up, personally I'd like to have it check for radio more often than that but oh well.
Hey man I also have the nexus s and I have similar issues as you mentioned. And I have heard about a lot of the fixes you saw as well. I knew this is part to blame to Wind ****ty service which I hope they fix soon and also on nexus s and Google with all the bugs they have with the 2.3 or higher versions. Just hang I'm there ...... your not alone..

Cool app, free is always good. But I'm used to my tasker I love that app.
Pretty annoying bug though. Hopefully they fix it soon I think it's a baseband bug so they need to push out a fix. Pretty bad testing on their part though I have to say.
As for the 3G Data specfic issue I haven't noticed any problems in that sense with Wind, working good here in Ottawa.

Yesterday, I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, and flashed Ginger-S v0.6. It seems that the first issue is better now; I haven't noticed it yet.
Maybe it was a faulty OTA install? Might explain why factory reset would help for the first boot; maybe a setting was getting corrupted after a while.
Haven't had the second issue happen yet, but I do have NoBars running so it might just be that it is doing a really good job.
I will keep an eye on it and let you know if it keeps working well.

phone loses cellular data settings

I am sort of at a loss. My Surround is losing it's celluar data settings every time I turn it off and boot it back up. The signal bars do no E, or G, or H or anything else. If I am not connected to wifi there is no data at all. Speaking of wi-fi, it also does not maintain most of my saved networks. The only one is does is the one at work.
I first ran into this after Mango RTM upgraded to final. I was having other issues (e.g. music search not working) and blamed it on the upgrade. At the time I WAS able to use the HTC connection setup to configure the cellular data connection. I finally did a complete wipe on it a couple of weeks ago; I flashed back to the original ROM release and let it spend the next couple of hours updating back to Mango. Everything seemed fine but in the last couple of days I have found the problem has returned. To make matters worse, I can't even seem to download the HTC connection setup app anymore.
I have tried multiple soft resets, battery pulls, booting up without the SIM and then booting up with it, etc. Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this and how to fix it? The phone is pretty useless as a smartphone without a data connection.

Try that rom :] You need to do a RSPL / HSPL thing first;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195647
I suggest downgrading to a lower firmware and then doing so :] Mine does it from time to time aswell, Usually gets fixed when I--
1; get a call
2; turn wifi on or off
3; airplane mode
But even if it doesnt show the network type, It always works

Thanks. 1, 2, and 3 definitely don't fix it. It might be worth going with the custom ROM just so that it's unlocked and saves me from having to pay for the official unlock down the road sometime. One other thing is that around the same time I started getting some screen wonkiness. I would be trying to type something and the keyboard kept minimizing back to the bottom every few characters. Mainly only affected text messages though.
I decided to call AT&T to see if they might be able to force a refresh of the data settings. Since I've called them before on the problem the guy thinks it best to replace the phone. Guess we'll see what happens. May still do the ROM you suggested once I get it though.
Bleeping bleep bleep phone! Someone in a different thread suggested HTC might be able to help with an issue like this. Only solution they gave was a hard reset so I finally did that on I think it was Thurs or Fri. Everything was dandy at first. Fast forward to today and I notice this evening that my phone had lost it's settings again and once more I can't get them back. I also notice that it ate my saved wifi networks again.
I have the refurb device AT&T sent and I suppose I will go ahead and try to use it. I just hate having to set everything up...again. It's really getting old. Could my SIM card be to blame?
Haha. Going to be attending the local WP Insider Circle thing next week. Maybe I'll get lucky and win a new phone.

Bugs

Anyone notice any bugs so far with the one xl? If so, report them here. I'm getting some weird bugs.
Wifi issue 1: Sometimes when i leave a wifi zone the phone still shows its connected to wifi. Only way to get rid of it is to turn wifi off and then back on.
Wifi issue 2: It stays connected to wifi, however, i notice it jumps up and down quite often and doesnt remain consistent. Sometimes i loose connection at 0 bars and then it goes back to full.
Loading: Sometimes when i leave an application the screen needs to load and i get a "loading" notification in the middle of the screen.
SMS notifications sometimes don't notify me. I randomly have o check myself.
Facebook private messages don't notify me as well. I have to manuallty check. Even though its set to sync.
Sometimes my sim needs to re-register.
This is my second HTC one XL unit. Also, rogers cannot get lte to work on my device. Yes, i have an lte sim and my account has an lte plan. I just came from a sgs 2 lte.
Let me know if anyone else is experience any bugs?
Those are some serious bugs that would be a deal breaker for me. Hopefully it's just a defective unit and you could get it replaced?

Like i mentioned in my previous post this is my second unit!
I can safely say I have not encountered any of those issues yet.
LTE is working great (on Telus). No issues with WiFi. All SMS notifications are working. Haven't received any Facebook PMs yet, so not sure about that.
One issue I have noticed, though I'm not sure if it's with the device or with specific apps, is that some apps that have a dedicated menu key will still show the soft menu key at the bottom of the screen.
e.g...

Note the app has it's own menu key, yet the soft menu key is still visible.
I previously stated my wifi was fine, but I am starting to notice some issues with it lately. It seems to drop connection from time to time. Sometimes my SMS also will not notify me, or if they do, I won't have a flashing green notification led.
I was having a problem earlier saying something like 'Network access changed. Calling is restricted' and forced me to have no signal. Switching airplane mode on/off fixed this problem, and playing around with the network mode (gsm/hspda/lte) seems to have fixed this problem for now.

I get the same issue with the calling is restricted issue. Then it registers the sim again. Seems like we have some of the same issues. These issues were both persistent on both of the HTC one xl phones i had.
I wasn't sure if it was from a screw up of mine or not, but I've noticed Wifi drops as well. I think I've had some network drops too but never any dropped calls and it's difficult to diagnose as a certainty.
The wifi definitely drops though. Hope a custom kernel with better wifi drivers comes out.
Haven't seen those on AT&T's version.
I've been using my One X nonstop since I got it yesterday, I haven't noticed my WiFi drop even once. Though I'm connected to a 5Ghz network; I've switched to my 2.4Ghz network now and I'll report back with my results later.

Does the AT&T version have a different radio baseband or anything? Otherwise, the AT&T and Rogers are the same model (X325e).

i believe our model is PJ83100... i could be wrong on that though.
I have noticed the wifi issue. It's fine when I'm near the hotspot (say, in my living room), but if I go out onto my deck, a place that other phones have no issue with, it goes completely squirrelly.
Rogers LTE is definitely weaker on this phone than on the Samsungs. At work, I get one bar with this phone (sometimes two) when I'm on LTE. With my Note, I got 3 or 4. It doesn't seem to affect the speed at all though.
Bars mean nothing... check the signal strength in dB to do a fair comparison...
LTE has been fine on mine but again I am in Calgary and the Rogers coverage here isn't the best for LTE, so I don't get in the coverage area often but even without LTE coverage my device is pulling 12-13/Mbs which I am more than content with.
I have experienced some minor signal issues with Wifi but nothing worse than what I have experienced in the past with my Galaxy SII (I9100M). The only real bug I have experienced is in the official twitter app.
Each time I go to compose a tweet the screen sometimes glitches out for a second before the popup to compose the tweet appears. That is all I have found so far.

I don't think that's the correct number.
I've been looking into this over the last few days. After all the videos I watched and reviews I read, etc. I can only find two models of the One X. The HSPA/WCDMA "International" variant, the S720e; and the HSPA/WCDMA/LTE variant, the X325a.
Everyone in this forum should have the X325a.
The pj83100 is the number listed on the pre order
HTC
America
Inc.
PJ83100
WHT
PHONE
Maybe just the number used for pre order or something

Ah, I just got the "no SMS notification" bug.
It happens when you leave the SMS app open when the screen is shut off. Even off, it assumes you're in the app and doesn't generate a notification.

That is how ICS (Android 4.0x) displays the menu button on legacy apps that have not been upgraded to the new ICS standards yet when being displayed on a phone with hard buttons like the One X. When a phone has the on screen buttons native in ICS (like on the Galaxy Nexus or some tablets) those dots show up as a fourth button on the bottom menu bar. Over time, as developers come into compliance with the new guidelines, I am sure the dots will go away or move to the top where they are supposed to be. I see that that app has a menu button up top but I would try something like Google Voice that is done "the right way" to see if you get the same result. For now though it is a monster waste of space.
I get the sms notification bug as well. And I think it happens not only when you have the app open and the screen off, but also sometimes when you're using the phone (and maybe the app is running in the background).
Also experiencing the black screen and re-loading when app switching.
One that hasn't been mentioned, is while typing, I sometimes get a "strobe" like flash of the screen. It flashes really brightly for a mili-second, and then back to normal. I don't think this should be confused with the "flickering" that so many people who have the international version are talking about. I'm using swiftkey, so I suppose it could be related to that, but I don't think so.
Hopefully all of these bugs are software related and will be taken care of with an update.
They seem all software related. Im of course experiencing similar issues! the phone still rocks! just some bugs need to be resolved. But nothing to hinder your daily use.
My WiFi/SMS notifs are fine, however as for Facebook, I've never had a single device that properly notified me when receiving a message, and therefore deem that a Facebook issue, not a One X issue. I've not had any problems with mine whatsoever.

[Q] Save my sanity! Wifi and data disables on screen off!

OK, let me first state that I have no battery saving apps installed, power saving is off and my wifi policy is set to always keep wifi awake.
Still, whenever my screen has been off for a few seconds (I'm guessing what happens is that the phone goes into deep sleep), both my wifi and my data connection goes into some kind of sleep state as well, making connections to and from the phone impossible. This means that push messages and mail aren't delivered and oftentimes when I turn on my phone again the messages start chiming in. Note that wifi and/or data don't need to reestablish after I turn the screen back on. They're still connected, just not active.
Using FTPServer on my One S and connecting from a pc confirms that all data sending (on both wifi and data) ceases after I turn off the screen.
When the phone is plugged in, all is dandy and all connections are kept alive!
I'm currently running running ViperS ROM, but this issue has plagued me across different ROMs (both sense and aosp) and across different radios as well.
I've literally (almost) googled my ass off on this issue, but I'm at my wits end. This shouldn't be related to HTC's SmartSync, since (1) I've disabled it in VenomTweaks and (2) It supposedly doesn't kick in until after 15 minutes. All my accounts have auto-sync activated and I've also disabled stuff like "restrict background data".
I've tried with and without the sleep mode settings under power settings below activated (w/ reboot after change).

For it to work the you need to use power saver so if you don't want it doing the other things then turn them off first then turn on power saver.

Now I'm on 2.15.0000 with radio 1.11.50.05.28.
I flashed the ICS RUU to do the official JB OTA in order to upgrade from my old hboot 1.14.0002 and radio 1.06es because I believed the old hboot and radio were the culprits in this. Sadly, they weren't.
To add insult to injury, I tried setting up a completely new google account as well as setting up a special hotmail account in the stock JB in case either of those were causing trouble with push message delays. Same crap though. Most nothing coming through until the screen was turned on.

Sorry to hear that, man!
Have you tried AOSP based ROMs as well? Made no difference for me, but YMMV...
But I agree that it's frustrating! It's 2013, everyone and their grandma are online 24/7 and I'm lucky if I get a mail notification within an hour of it actually arriving!

Yes AOSP ROMS as well. Resetting my router seemed to fix it as far as Wifi is concerned. Can't test data at the moment.

G930W8 Rebooting several times a day

I have a G930W8 that was supposedly brand new, running stock 7.0 with TWRP and SuperSU. It reboots 1-3 times a day at random times while I'm not using the phone.
I've factory reset it and only loaded a few apps on it, cleared davlik and cache, reloaded the stock rom from odin - it is still happening. Does anyone have any tips on how to diagnose? I've tried looking through the last_kmsg files but I can't make much sense out o them - should they be able to identify the cause for the crashing? I'm trying to determine if it's a hardware issue or something else.
I did have over 40k sms / mms messages on there that I'm clearing out now, would that cause spontaneous reboots?
Thanks for any help.

40k SMS could cause problems, but you said you factory reset, that would have cleared them

Thanks. I reloaded them after the reset with a backup and restore app. I changed the setting to only keep 1k messages on there now and will monitor.
Hopefully that was the issue, but really wondering if I will be able to make sense of the last_kmsg logs at all.
If the smaller quantity of messages on there doesn't resolve the issue, I'll try runnning it without an sdcard for a day. I initially suspected a problem with the sdcard, formatted it since - formatting did not resolve the issue.
Am I looking in the right spot? Since clearing out my sms messages, it still crashes on me every few hours. I pulled the last two kmsg files from the last two reboots. Is there anyone that can let me know if I'm looking at the right files to diagnose?
Is this area of the file telling me anything useful?

UPDATE:
I left the country for 8 days and was using a Costa Rica SIM card (and various different wifi connections) - the phone did not reboot a single time in 8 days.
On my first day back home, after putting my AT&T SIM card back in (this is a new card that I just got a few weeks ago from AT&T), and being connected to my home wifi - it has started spontaneously rebooting again. I've reset the network connections, it has not helped.
I'm torn between whether I got a bad SIM card that could be causing the reboots, or if it is something wrong with the wifi and my home network, or a combination of both. Many of the reboots seem to occur when I switch from LTE to wifi. It is a very difficult issue to reproduce.
Any suggestions on how to isolate the issue, any settings to check, or if it sounds like a radio or hardware issue?
Thanks.

Yea, disable WiFi for another week, if it stops, it's the wifi, if it still crashes it's the SIM
Thanks. It just crashed again with wifi turned off, so that rules out that.
So it seems likely either a bad SIM, or the phone is having issues with the LTE network. I notice the network switches from LTE to LTE+ often.
It would be odd if it is a bad SIM as it is only a few weeks old, but I'll swap it out with AT&T.
Knowing that wifi is not an issue, any other suggestions other than a bad SIM? I'm also wondering if maybe the sim tray does not hold the hard well and it's loose.
Thanks for the support.

Just keep with your elimination technique, looks like you're almost down to the cause, be it SIM or LTE/+
Switch SIMs, if it doesn't crash when switching between LTE and + then ask your carrier for a new SIM
Couldn't a log file of some sort be run to trap/identify the app and error?
ok i had this problem when buy my s7 10 months ago with stock firmware. all ways reset/on/off/clear cach/format....noting useful so i tried to update but no new update so i force to download whole new firmware with another csc from another region( i downloaded rom of UK) and flashed to phone with Odin. and Wow problem is gone....finish...end .
maybe useful for u.
