I'm new to the forum. My Tilt2's screen died, and AT&T let me do an early upgrade to the Inspire. I have been using Garmin Mobile XT on my Tilt2 as my navigator in my car. I won't receive my new Inspire until Thursday. Does it come with navigation out of the box? I was hoping to utilize the on-board GPS, not rely on an internet connection. Can you suggest something similar to Garmin or Tom Tom. I like cheap. Thanks for your help.
I really miss Garmin Mobile XT from Tilt2 and HD2, too. It comes with Google Maps and Navigation but the best I've found so far is CoPilot Live in the market. I would think that Garmin would eventually release their software for Android since one of the Garmin phones ran Android but I don't have any idea when that might be.

Google Nav or Mapquest
Both are decent and free, and Mapquest upgraded their voice directions piece. I think you will be VERY happy with your Inspire, and you will find either of these to get you (literally) where you want to go.

I use the google nav too its stock on the phone out of the box and I love it. But it does require data usage.
CoPilot is great because of the offline use, fantastic for traveling in areas with poor network connection.
Try navigon now on the market. It's way better than copilot but it's about $30 while you can get copilot for $5.
I have copilot because it was the only thing available on the market at the time but if I could choose today I would go with navigon as it have better maps and routing.
Copilot have a drm/licensing hell and if you're into flashing new roms be ready to mail their tech support often requesting a reset on the activation.
Has anyone tried the copilot app? Is it worth the cost?

I miss my Garmin voices but Google Navigation isn't bad after upgrading the tts engine to svox it's ok. The maps are more up to date at least.
Google nav is good but the one I used on my old Tilt 2 was Waze. Its pertty fun and interactive to use pluss, iff alit of other people use waze n urr area, it can give you live traffic updates based on there pls position and speed. Allso, u can report accedents or other road hazzards for everyone to see. Verry usefull gps.

Yup, last night I downloaded Waze and it was fun and informative. If there were a lot of people using Waze then we were able to see where the traps were and the accidents. Nice navigation app!

Big ups to CoPilot, I paid $5 on the Market, maps can be downloaded for free, and there is no data charge incurred when you use it. Working great for me.

If you backup and restore CoPilot (app and data) with Titanium Backup, it does not require re-activation.

Copilot isn't compatible yet
Well I got the car dock, and paid for the HTC Locations £22.99 for life time, and i am very happy with it IMO just as good as my Tom Tom dedicated satnav.
I have CoPilot Live installed on my Sensation and it does work perfectly

I have been using Co-pilot for years now and it works very well on the Sensation. I use it with Google Navigation so I can switch between the 2 on a car journey and use the Google Nav to see road traffic problems (red dot/roads etc). I find that the 2 work well togther. I also use CamerAlert - all 3 are happy running on the Sensation and I get pop-ups from CamerAlert, traffic guidance from Google Nav and the clear and good route estimates of Co-pilot.
I have co-pilot 8 with their traffic add on (£9.99 per year) it is ok but not great.
The maps are old , traffic info not as good as Google and it can pick odd routes. A really annoying thing is it won't auto re-route due to traffic it just informs you.
Tried Aura but it has terrible routing ( from m62 to m56 it wanted to take me through Warrington town centre on a roads rather than use m6 , btw going from Manchester to north wales)

Google navigation is good as long as you have a signal and don't use the phone much for talking while navigating
It's pro's are its free and has good traffic info and maps are quite upto date
Con's are imo no speed cams and no speed display and no 2D direction of travel up.
Am using HTC Locations atm as its the only one to integrate fully with the phone ie if someone calls while driving a POP up comes up on bottom of the screen but the map also stays running which none of the others do they just go to phone canvas .
Bought the 1 month subscription for use abroad but its not the easiest to enter addresses on and the main downside is the traffic option is blanked out you cannot buy the traffic yet. I emailed about buying it but they couldn't give me an eta when this will be available.
So for now its back to Google navigation although I am thinking if buying a TomTom 1005 as it still has the best traffic and best routing imo . I have kept my old touch hd as it has TomTom on it but wm TomTom hasn't got the hd traffic /iq routes or tts
Not tried co-pilot 9 yet if anyone has is it worth the cost to upgrade from 8 to 9?

Why do you say that? Although I live in the UK I have Copilot on my Sensation with US maps and that works fine on my Sensation and has UK maps available. For UK and the rest of Europe I use Sygic, which also works well.
These were legacy apps from my old Hero. I just emailed support of both Copilot and Sygic with my product code and they gave me instructions and links to download and re-install the apps on the Sensation. Sygic even gave me a free upgrade to the latest software and maps.
I use MapQuest and it has navigation built in to it. It is a all in one app and does not need alot of resources to run it. I also gives you turn by turn instruction by voice.
Has anyone else tried using CoPilot Live on the Triumph? I've had no problems with ANY GPS app, other than this one! I get a good GPS lock before even launching the app, and in my notification bar it shows I have lock, but yet CoPilot doesn't want to show me my location.
I've had no issues with this app on any other phones.
Personally, I'd rather use Google Maps, but CoPilot Live is great when there is no data coverage since the maps are stored locally on the MicroSD card!

I had CoPilot working on my MT in Palm Springs this week (hot!!!!!!) since I wasn't getting signal. After it took several minutes to get a lock, it worked great - I actually hadn't used it before driving and the voice guidance was more helpful than the Garmin dedicated gps (with now dead batteries and bad charging cable.)
It was especially satisfying since my girlfriend's iphone4 gps wasn't working there

I have it on my phone and just used it tonight for a three hour drive.. I would suggest a complete reinstall including the maps... I had it in my optimus before and I just downloaded the app from the market and it used the maps that were already in the card... It used to act wonky. Complete reinstall fixed it...

Version 8 works fine for me, but 9 doesn't acquire any satellites....I've emailed tech support, but they are useless...my ticket is currently "under investigation."

First before we get started, there's always that one guy who points out that you can tether your phone. Yes we all know this, there are many reasons for not doing this so lets discuss what works and where it works since we cover alot of different regions.
So now with a new tablet in hand I want to have the ability to use it for as many uses as possible. And as anyone who has tried to get directions on their phone and found they had no data signal will tell you, cached maps can be a life saver. Getting a good offline navigation to work and work properly can be amazingly simple in alot of cases, and and others dreadfully annoying. What do you use and why? And, just as importantly, what don't you use and why?
Sygic Navigation (Free) (EDIT- ONLY A 14 DAY TRIAL...BOOO) This one works pretty well for me. I've had issues before getting it to download map data becasue it said my external SD was full when it wasn't (local SD was). Would be nice to be prompted with "Destination full, would you like to choose the destination?" so I can point it at the proper SD. Most likely caused by the particular rom I was using. I havn't used it for any real travel yet.
NavFree (Free in US) I used this one awhile ago with pretty good results. It looks like it's gotton some updates, not sure what "crowd powered" means and if its useful, but I'll probably give it a try, looks promising.
GPS CoPilot This one seems to have alot of fans too, but a quick reading of the descriptions says that for a premium experience, you can upgrade and get voice navigation and turn by turn directions.
Google Nav, by far my favorite nav app, has been teasing with mention of supporting this soon, but to my knowledge has yet to release this feature. They only allow you to cache routes, not download entire map data. Rumor has it that with JB will come some cool new indoor mapping and other great map/nav features.
If you use offline navigation, what works for you?
I've been using Sygic for about 1.5 years now and it has been a good exerience. Allows for walking guidance as well -- although I understand that would not come in particularly handy with a 10" tablet in your hands. Maps are free, whereas where I live (the Netherlands), the more popular option, TomTom, only provides paid maps (which are not even that much better).

I believe Sygic uses TomTom maps does it not? Atleast that's what the description states.

I believe they indeed share the same map sources, but TomTom makes you pay for every new map, whereas with Sygic, you can use the downloader to get them for free. This comes in particularly handy when you travel abroad on a vacation or for work, because you can easily get the local map on your device.

Does someone have it working on this tablet?

I have this issue as well. Can it be the OpenGL drivers?
Mostly hangs when zooming and panning.
Sygic worked fine, but I in installed it because it was a 14 day trial bs

I used NavFree US on my way to work today. I take an ungodly combination of back roads and restricted access govt roads and it tracked just fine and occasionally told me to turn onto a road that never exsisted, but considering the conditions that's no reason to complain. I think NavFree is the one to stick with.
I use Navigon on my phone, works flawlessly no issues at all. I haven't tried it on my infinity and not looking to because i wont be needing navigation on it. Also by the looks of it your looking for a free app.

Well, so much for Sygic. I can confirm it borks out when zooming in on the map.

The app installed and downloaded the maps fine.
When I selected map? from the main menu the screen when blank. I was able to exit without any problems.
I didnt have any installation issues, I hade a "this aint free" issue. The free app, as far as aI can tell, is only free for 14 days.
On the NavFree side of things, I've been playing with it on and off the past couple days and pretty impressed with it. This this is the app I've been looking for.
Google maps let you make a pretty large area available for offline viewing. Works really well too. Not going to have satellite viewing, but route guidance is good. Just open Google Maps and then click on the menu in the tops right corner and then click make available off line. From there you can drag a square anywhere on the map up to like 75 square miles, good for local navigation but not so hot if you're planning on traveling across country.
It's a great free option for anyone wanting local nav offline.
I believe we're limited to 10 off line maps (about 50 mgs each).
GPS will show your location but with no layers, navigation, or directions.
You can get directions while data is available and 'save' them for later.
It took 2 off line maps to cover all of Puerto Rico.

I tried this before and it was an epic fail. I love everything Google, and but caching just doesn't cut it right now. If they ever get around to actually following through with making maps downloadable I'll be stoked.

Did you try this recently? This Maps are now downloadable offline, as AspenMan stated.
According to this article, the #s are 6 maps savable, each 80MB.

Last I heard they were cache only, not downloadable. I tried a month or so ago, so this is new to me. Will give it a try tonight and see. Not sure if 6 maps will cut it for travel though, but may be a good backup for local maps and destination maps as the google maps tend to be more recent and accurate. NavFree for example didn't have my friends house whos neighborhood is a couple years old.
My wife and are are headed to New Orleans this week (From STL).
Today, just for a test, I took out my note and tried the GPS. I was under the assumption that maps would load, and the GPS would give us location. I was wrong. It seems you have to do available offline in Google Maps.
The problem is, it only lets me capture a VERY small section of the map.
Are there other map applications that I could use with the GPS for this trip that are available offline?
Open Street Maps
Look for Open Street Maps based mapping apps in the Play Store. They use offline maps.

Get navfree usa. Its free. Download state maps. Offline route calculation. No crashes on note 10.1

you can capture multiple small sections and they'll be under "my places". since i haven't tested it on a trip that crosses multiple sections i'm not sure how seamless it works across them.
First, I don't know if you noticed but the offline mode capture area can be adjusted. Use the two finger zoom method to zoom out to capture more in one shot. Your maximum capture area is limited to 86 MB. From my experience this allows a fairly large area. About 60 miles wide. Just remember while the maps will work you will need connectivity if you want navigation to work.
To get offline maps with navigation I definitely recommend Sygic and comes with a free trial period which will let you evaluate the app before purchasing the maps. For free options navfree is out there but I have no idea how good it is. Maybe others can comment on navigation experience with navfree.

It does . You download and keep certain areas you need. But I am not sure if you can use it with only gps on.

I've never used a GPS, so take this for what it's worth, but I downloaded NavFree USA the other day. After that, I downloaded their New York map ('cause that's where I live). It took a while to download that, but afterward worked great. This may seem ignorant, but I didn't realize you could use GPS when not connected to WiFi. But the fact that I could use this as a GPS in my car, with no data connection, was a huge surprise to me.
Of course, you don't things like current traffic issues, but having never used a GPS at all, I was pretty pleased.

OSMAnd is a good bet - you could test out with the free version, even though in theory I could build a fully working version from source, the $3-4 or so is worth auto-updating from the Market for an unrestricted version.
It does have offline routing, however I haven't really "stress tested" it for accuracy.
Try copilot. I've used it a lot and found it excellent!

I have been a co-pilot user for a few years its awesome . You cant go wrong . the whole us map download from there server takes about 30-40 minutes and is about 1.3 gb if i remember correctly. You can also d/load reginal maps. I think they update them quicker and more so then anyone else..
if you have a issue they will respond back to you often same day but always within 24 hours.. you get what you pay for with co- pilot very though out app with lots of features..

What I like with Copliot is you can install it on all your android devices, maps too. I have it on my Note 10.1, 2 Acer A501's, 2 SGS3's, and my 2 galaxy tabs as well as an old HTC HD 2( beast of a phone).
And I agree that copilot is awesome but here in Oz there aren't too many map updates...

I use navigation systems for a living. I flew for the USAF, and fly worldwide for a major airline now. In addition to that, I've used all types of GPS apps and dedicated GPS in many cities and places around the USA and around the world.
Co-Pilot isn't a bad app, but their maps are truly horrible in many areas. I would recommend Co-Pilot only if you are familiar with the area you'll be using it. I've tried it in many cities where the maps don't even have the major freeways correct. Epic Fail.
Sygic has a decent--not great--interface and excellent maps. Plus, they have maps for locations all around the globe. HOWEVER, their POI search is horribly flawed. If you're within 25 miles of what you're looking for, it works OK. If you're looking or something further away it can be next to impossible to find it. Sygic concentrates on form over function. Fail.
Unfortunately, I have yet to try an Android based GPS Nav app that I would recommend for use in an unfamiliar area. Even Google Maps has serious issues that render it less than optimal.
I would highly recommend getting one of Garmin's GPSs from last year, like the 3750. You can pick that up on Amazon for less than $150. Or Sears has the 3790 with lifetime map updates for less than $180. Easily pocketable and works great. Use Google maps at the hotel to decide what you want to see, use a dedicated GPS to get you there.

Hi there.. Well i still have (kinda have) my a500. its a awesome device. I bought two nexus 7 tablets got it because it would fit in my purse. But ended up sending it back for a exchange because of lousy build issues. The replacement was worse. So i sent it back and waiting for a refund . Monday or tuesday im getting a NOTE 10.1 .. Bad experience with the nexus 7 i do not wanna try a 3 rd . i love my wacom intuos so thought this would fit me better.
Think i should buy. Well i have to get something my Spouse (better half so she says) tells me i do NOT get my acer back.. so im tablet less right now... boohoooooo
