happy new year to everyone.
I've just bought nexus s gt i9020 in U.K
Ginger 2.3.1
grh78
baseband i9020xxjk8
I'm going to root and install clockwork via ONE-CLICK-ROOTon it and I have one question ;
When should I backup my eds folder, before or after is rooted ?
thank u in advance
if any one of u bought recently the same nexus s from carephonewarehouse and already made all steps(rooting, clockwork, new room) and want to advice me, I'll really appreciate this
As soon as you make backup, safer you are..
but should/can I backup it before rooting and installing clockwork?
ok so ill root phone, then install clockwork and then run eds tool to backup folder, is that correct?
If you can back it up via adb do it as soon as possible, not sure if you actually need root for this. I believe you'll be wanting a copy with set permissions (so archive it as a .tar.gz file, which stores this data), and a raw translation of the device it is mounted under.
I personally got all my info from here, and happily so far have never had to even think about going through my backups. All worked fine (though it takes a while for the RAW to copy over).
thanks mate for help

Just a quick question for all the super users out here. I currently have a captivate that is rooted and sideloading enabled. Due to speaker issues it is being replaced after rooting my new phone ( from ATT ) what would happen if I copied my current settings.db file over to the new phone? Would this cause issues? I know I could just redo the sideloading part but I am curious.
Assuming you are going to be running the same setup you should be fine.
I own an Evo, so I don't know much about these.. but can anyone confirm if this would work?
1. make nandroid backup of old phone
2. root new phone
3. install clockwork recovery on new phone
4. make nandroid backup of new phone
5. restore nandroid backup from old phone
I know this works on an Evo, but on the Evo you have to use amen ra recovery so you don't restore your old 4g RSA keys. Does the Captivate have any device specific files that cannot be transferred between phones? If not, I don't see why this wouldn't work.
i dont know if it causes trouble but i have 2 phones and the setting file is different on each one so it might have some problems if the wrong thi ng is change
First Thanks to Roebeet for this update.
I am a newbie to this stuff and want to try and install 5.0.0 lite.
I am running 3588 double and triple checked, but want to confirm next steps so as to try and avoid semi brick.
I connected my G to laptop and created ROM folder and downloaded to there.
But can't seem to get file to extract to files update.zip and recovery. Then what is meant by unmount drive cleanly.
Thanks for putting up with such a newbie. I will get better with time I am sure.
Thanks,
Nathan
Did You Extract the Zip File from the RAR
Nathan:
I'm also a newbie so I'm probably overreading your question - but if you literally did what you wrote - then I would wonder if you extracted the recovery directory and update.zip files from the TNTLite 5.0 RAR file.
Roebeet packs his updates into RAR files so that for those of us who don't use ClockWorkMod (CWM) - we have the recovery directory and command file to use in updates. But the RAR file has to be unpacked/extracted to get to the recovery directory and update.zip file.
Since you didn't mention having done this after you moved the TNTLite 5.0 rom to your g tablet - I wonder if you've taken that step. If you haven't you either can unpack the RAR on your laptop/desktop and then move into the root of your g tablet SDCARD. Or you can use a program like UNRAR to unpack the TNTLite 5.0 RAR file directly on your g tablet.
Make sure you put the unpacked update.zip and recovery directory (if you don't use CWM) in the root of your SDCARD - not inside and other folder or directory like ROM-5. If the update.zip and recovery directory (if you don't used CWM) are not in the root of SDCARD, the g tablet will not find them when you use the power and volume + (up) to flash the update.
Hope this helps.
Thank you this is my problem. So, I tried to open on laptop and it just keeps coming up with open in a loop and no file. Not sure what I am doing wrong, is there a good place to find UNRAR program.
Thanks again
Got TNT lite 5.0 to install with no problems. One question though. I lost my angry birds and assume that is because I had to data wipe or does it come back when connected to the internet.
Thanks again.
rockdogg,
Did you complete a Titanium Backup before you started the upgrade to TnT Lite 5.0.0? If so, this is what I did:
The version of Angry Birds that is included with 3991/TnT Lite 5.0.0 rom is version 1.4.2. I had installed version 1.5.2 of Angry Bird prior to the upgrade, so I
1) Verified I still had the Titanium Backup for Angry Birds.
2) Removed the version of Angry Birds (1.4.2) installed with the rom.
3) Installed (restored) version 1.5.2 from backup (and selecting app+data)
If you want to use the 1.4.2 version that was installed with the rom, and just reinstall the data, then go to Titanium Backup (assuming you have a backup of the data), select Angry Birds from the backup/restore list as if you are going to restore it, and when prompted, select to restore the data only.

When in doubt, don't do it. If it works, it works well - but you can semi-brick the device if you're not careful. It's a tricky path and I still think it's the reason why Viewsonic hasn't released this firmware yet.
Read the instructions and if you prepare for the worst (which is using nvflash to unbrick it), I think it's worth doing.
thanks alot for your response i am studying up now!!!!!!!
Roebeet, I love the new software. I am by no means a computer guy and I had no problems installing the TnT lite 5.0.
roebeet's TNT Lite thread is detailed very nicely and easy to understand. I've been tinkering on/off for a month or so and TNT Lite is my preferred custom rom due to the ease of installation/supplements, not to mention the top notch support. =]

If you don't have it on there now then the answer is both. Install it before to make a backup then reinstall it after the upgrade to 5.0 to perform the restore. For those that are as paranoid about data loss as me, I also recommend copying the backup to a usb drive or the external sdcard just to be on the safe side.
Thanks for that info, ithinkim about readyto flashthis puppy but I am wondering about the partioning do I do this when I boot into recovery sorry for the noobish questions but I want to be sure
I say get familiar with the nvflsh process and try all the roms till u find one u like
I just downloaded this file from roebeets instructions thinking it was the apx driver but after looking at the file it has alot in it is this something else?
gtab.apx.stock.3588.zip
Another question. .being that my device has never been modded do I need to download something to root it first before I flash 5.0? And would it be a good idea to use the.8 clockwork mod to backup first?
Sorry for the bombardment of noobism but I am truly trying to take all precautions.
And to Roebeet the Guy who said You messed his device up must have been totally clueless you gave probably the most detailed warning label possible thanks for your efforts and help.
Semi-Bricked but OK
Slight newbie myself and I did not follow instructions correctly the first time. The flash recovery worked and then I used the link to the 3588 and all worked well.
If you are willing to take the chance version 5 is great. I am very pleased and Robeet I want to thank you very much for the instructions and the patience to lay it all out for what we need to do. It makes the adventure worthwhile.
I rooted my S3, changed one file, and am now stuck in the startup screen. I've looked on the forums but I'd like to confirm what my recovery options are.
(1) Since I have no backup*, can I recover from a factory recovery for my model and still keep some of my data, apps and customizations?
It's a N American SIII (Rogers Wireless Samsung SGH-I747M). I can boot successfully into both Odin and CWM Recovery (Clockwork 5.5). BusyBox installed. I do not have a functioning MicroSD.
*I only did one thing:
renamed framework-res.apk to framework-res.apk2 to test permissions. Errors and crash ensued, then I restarted and here I am.
That apk file is part of a fix which is circulating that corrects a bug in the North American models' battery reporting, which requires replacing the apk with a slightly modified version. I thought trying a file rename was a safe small test, prior to backing up. The name "framework" should have tipped me off probably.
(2) Is factory recovery my best option? I would love to get in and just name the file back. But I can't get in.
(3) Was some automatic backup made that I overlooked? Rooting and the learning curve took so many steps I can't remember myself.
(4) Can I just restore the /system directory perhaps?
Yep, relative noob here. Hope my question is placed correctly and I haven't missed another post with the answers I need, if not pls advise.
Copied question to a better thread
It's now in the Android Q&A, see:

Just getting used to the forum here.
NEVER FEAR find a ROM that you want to install and flash it using Odin or copy it to SD card and flash using clockwork mod And no there is no secret backup BTW once you get your phone working again make a backup then Go to where its stored And label it ALWAYS backup as soon as you root your phone
If you can manage, push a similar framework (taken from someone else) using adb...
Typed using a small touchscreen
How?

You can flash a ROM using Clockwork instead of Odin? I totally missed that memo! Tips please
I found that Clockwork required the file to be in the internal SD folder -- I couldn't access the External SD card under any circumstance. There was no way to get a file to the internal file system without a functioning ROM. This is still confusing me. Maybe I had the wrong version of Clockwork or was doing it wrong. Not for lack of trying.
So i broke the glass on my n5 but it's working ok, recently i manged to buy a cheap new white one, and basically have 2 working phones.
I want to transfer all my stuff from the old > new, i'm wondering, apart from the usual Titanium path, is there any google service or other method that will make a copy of my old phone on the new one?
What would be the best approach here, if Titanium, are there any shortcomings?
ty
Why not backup in TWRP (make sure NOT to backup EFS) and then restore (once again, WITHOUT EFS) on the other phone? Everything will be exactly the same.
Also make sure they're both on the same bootloader/baseband.
You forget the content of your /sdcard. Use adb pull/push to transfer your favorite folders/files to your new device.
Tnx gents! I was thinking of nandroid, but wasn't sure it can work between phones.
They have the same baseband, by the same bootloader you mean the same version/build number?
Of course i will transfer sdcard by other means.
btw. it's strange google doesn't offer simple backup/restore to new phone

I did that, since I asked Google to replace my phone due to abattery charging problem. I installed same bootloader same radio same twrp version on both phones, backup all the "SD card" with a PC,and then made a nandroid backup. Now if you export the whole nandroid folder on the new phone ,you will not be able to install it because the folder name is related to the phone serial (if you look at the nandroid folder is named with many random charters). To solve this I created a nandroid backup on the new nexus 5 ,and renamed the backup of the old one with the name of the new one. This worked for me . I don t know if now you have to do the rename stuff no with last versions, but was like this 8 months ago (don't remember twrp version).
Don t backup efs partition and restore on the new one,it contains the imei and other stuff, and don't try to flash a 32gb nandroid backup on a 16gb model, I don't know if it will work
It worked, i also found out you can migrate stuff from the old nexus using google tap&go through nfc, don't know how much that restores..
Ty all for the help

Below the original is a response I received.
Hi Im not a developer and dont know much about android i just don't know who to ask for this particular problem.
I had a ZTE Obsidian phone that wont get past the Metropcs boot screen so I did a system restore menu by holding power and the up vol button.
After going to boot menu I created a backup to my sdcard. userdata_20150101_003623.backup this is the file name I was given. To make sure I created another one and the only diffrence is trhe file extension saying backup1.
I then factory reset the phone and tried to reboot but it still has the same problem. I purchased a new phone the asus Zenfone3. I then tried to do the same thing here but restore the phone using the same backup from the ZTE but I received an error saying the backup is out of date. The zte was running on lollipop and the asus on marshmellow.
Im on windows 10. I was hoping to find away to extract my contacts and possibly the app color note with the notes I wrote in it from the backup.
Is this possible can I extract these files from a .backup to my windows 10 desktop some kind of way or can I get another zte phone and create a clone of my last one from the backup file
Greetings and welcome to assist. Do you know what format the backup was saved in ? Where you using twrp or cwm? You could use titanium backup to extract from the backup on your phone if you have root or I think assayed kitchen has the option to extract from a back up here

No I dont know what format the file is saved in. The file extension just says .backup
Where you using twrp or cwm?
Im a novice at android and developing. I dont know what these are. I used my no rooted phone from Metro Pcs (ZTE Obsidian Z820) before I factory rest it I created a backup using the factory restore system on the phone. I did not use a computer or third party apps to do this.
You could use titanium backup to extract from the backup on your phone if you have root or I think assayed kitchen has the option to extract from a back up here.
The phone was from metro pcs and not rooted. I have also downloaded the (Assayed Kitchen) program but have no idea how to use it to access the .backup file. There are no instructions for some one of my limited knowledge on android phones.

Greetings ans welcome again. It is unusual for a stock recovery to be able to make a back up that is the problem, it is only normally possible to make a backup using a custom recovery like cwm or twrp so I assumed you had done this. You can not restore a backup from a different model of phone as it is incompatible, if you copy your back up to your pc and right click it to get properties it should tell you what file extension was used. You won't be able to restore the back up to a different model of phone but may be able to extract contacts, messages, photos etc

Yea thats what I thought but wanted to verify it. Im currently trying to find the same model phone online so I can use the files.
When I click the properties button the file type is listed as "BACKUP (.backup)". I dont think there is a program that can actually read this file type at least I cant find one that does.
If there is one I would like to be able to get that kind of info off of it.
