Android Honeycomb "How To" Videos? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am giving an Asus Transformer tablet as a present to my sister-in-law.
However, she lives pretty far away, and has never touched anything "Android".
Does anybody know where I can find some basic "User's Guide" or "How To" videos on how to use a Honeycomb Tablet?
Thanks,
¿GJ?

Android is self-explanatory i mean.

I can probably put one together. I've introduced android to a lot of smartphone/tech noobs and iOS crossovers. I'll try and find some time tonight

That would be awesome, jinsoku3g! I actually considered purchasing a webcam today to put something together myself, if necessary.

Now, that's funny.
Maybe you're just kidding, traxxus, but if not - Android certainly isn't self-explanatory for someone who hasn't had any experience with a smartphone or Android device.
Apple iOS isn't self-explanatory, either. Both have a learning curve.
My wife has been using her Droid X for well over a year now, and there is still quite a lot she doesn't understand on her phone. If someone isn't tech-savvy, a new tablet can be pretty intimidating.
Since I can't be there to help my sister-in-law out, I want to help her out as much as possible. I want to make sure she enjoys her new present, and that it doesn't end up in a corner somewhere collecting dust.
Cheers,
¿GJ?

I will put a few together tomorrow. Been meaning to do this to intro newbies to the dark side. Help fight saint stephen's holy apple church.

Thanks, goodintentions - I will keep an eye out for it!
I was really amazed that there is so little available on the web in Android training (at least, where I searched). It certainly would make the platform even more popular, and help dispel the "Android isn't easy to use" myth.

question about making an android app (soundboard)...

So, I am interested in making a soundboard for the movie super troopers... Just curious if anyone has any experience making soundboards? Or, would I be better off pulliing a soundboard apk from my phone and just swap out the sounds I want? If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it, thanks!
I don't have any soundboard experience...
But just taking an apk and replacing sounds is definitely not something someone should suggest.. Pulling OS information and cooking roms is a little different than taking an app and releasing a dev's work with different .wmv's, that's a little thing called plagiarism..
But if you ask the dev prior to that, I guess it would be ok.. You just need his source..
*edit
look what google found me...

Not advanced at all. There's a reason there are so many soundboard apps on the market. It's just about the easiest, most no-brainer app you can write that actually does anything. Even if you've never even written a basic "Hello World" app, it shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 hours running through the tutorials on the android sdk site to be able to whip up a soundboard.

Hmmm. Maybe THAT'S the problem....all those soundboard makers heard that they were no-brainers to make, and decided not to turn on their noodles before creating and releasing their monstrosities upon the world. (not meant as a dig @ OP)

Oh, I don't think he meant anything derogatory by it. I've been writing code for 20+ years, but I'm still doing a couple crazy simple Android apps just to get myself familiar with the new platform.
There's nothing wrong with writing simple apps as a learning experience. Even experienced coders have to do it from time to time when learning a new language or new platform.
The only part that's a little ridiculous is posting these "Java 101 homework assignments" on the market. Does the world *really* need 5 dozen collections of SpongeBob sound clips?
(No offense intended to anybody, but people should maintain a sense of reality about how appealing their app really is to the general public... I think it's awesome when people post things like this with source code and complete Eclipse project files so that other people can use them as a learning tool, I just question whether simple stuff like this really belongs on the market as a "product". It tends to clutter up my search results when I'm looking for useful stuff....)

What he said! Wasn't making fun of anyone wanting to learn or anything like that a all. Hell, I'm working my way through the "how to make a calculator" guide, myself, lol! I know jack about coding! I was more referring to the fact that some of these guys don't seem to ask themselves weather or not the world really needs "Rosie O'donnel: Bathroom Sounds v.17" before they slap it in the market. I tried to be clear that I wasn't picking on the OP, guess I could have been more explicit? Sorry if there was confusion.
I havent taken any offense here... some soundboards are retarded, and I will be the first to agree... I am just shocked that, with the amount of 1 liners in the movie super troopers, there arent any soundboards for it... (of course, I may be biased, as some people may think this movie was stupid, but I loved it lol)... I have no programming experience, only video/audio editing experience... I found the link "azyouthinkeyeiz" maybe 20 minutes before he replied to this thread, and am trying that tutorial... I am definently looking forward to learning more, and if anyone out there has any websites they can suggest for learning programming, I am more than down to learn!

"I vaunt one... I do I do" lmfao
ok so I got my first board together... From House, MD. Pretty neat, I'd say.
Now what I want to know is this: how can I get them ads on there like all the other apps have? I can send a zip if someone feels spunky enough to help me

Ok, I want to take matters into my own hands...HELP :-)

Funny title huh Seriously though, I am tired of the hit and miss of live wallpapers, and other apps working or not working on my beloved Hero, that being said what I have desperately been trying to do is learn Java(a live wallpaper not sticking when all my others do is what started this, it's dumb I know) so I can start programming things to work for our phone(or at least try). I have spent 2 days looking for a good way to learn Java, I have been all over the net hunting for an interactive Java tutorial and have come up empty handed, I found a couple PDFs as well as some online tutorials but they don't explain everything(it seems like they all assume you already know some Java or programming), I am a total beginner and need it all explained, preferably with hands on. I am a fast learner when things are explained and taught properly, I think I could excel at this, so I figure this community is the best place to ask for advice on how and where to proceed, so come on guys help me out what is the best way for a total beginner to proceed, how did you all start, where did you go for help? Again, I am only asking here because I really have spent 2 days looking for a proper tutorial and come up empty handed...THANKS!!
Oh, I can skype if some saintly person feels like teaching.
edit:this is what started my obsession http://www.mediafire.com/?jiynwdnmc1z out of the 6 I have this is the only one that wont stick, so I figured why not try to re-build it my self after comparing it to the ones that do stick(it does run perfectly, just wont stick)
Well if you are a total newbie to programming my best advice is goto your local book store or half-price books(used book store) and find a book on java programing probly too first one would be java progamming for dummies and the second one a more adavaced book go though both of them do the lesson in there and learn by doing best way to do it and then check out the froyo thread for the irc room and if you get stuck ask someone in there oh on here your direct question if you do your homework and give a detialed description of what your working on more people are going to try and help you but this is just my two cents and the extend of my attempt at advice good luck and hope to see your name on an op soon
Wow, I gotta say, I do like that lwp a lot man. Thanks for posting the link to it Good luck on learning Java man. It's not too hard, but once you start scripting with it etc... that's a whole different story, lol
It's good to see someone wants to stop putting up with stuff not working and make it work Honestly, I'd just go to your local library, and check out a bunch of stuff on Java... that's what I did with Python
It's going to take a lot of reading and trial and error to learn java. But a little heads up, the live wallpapers that don't stick, is a driver issue, not a programming issue. I don't know enough about android, so unless there is a line you can add to the header to force software rendering, you can't do much about it.

Thanks for the responses guys! I really didn't think of grabbing a Dummies book, I figured there would be a good course online, but that's what I'm going to get first thing tomorrow. I figure once I get familiar with it all(maybe a week or two) I will compare the ones that work with the one that doesn't and go from there. I think the first app I would like to work on would be a request from the forum, you guys all help and give back, I think that would be a great way to put the knowledge to good use Well, thanks again, I'm still open to more suggestions, maybe a couple weeks from now I can at least give you guys a neat wallpaper!

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but the wallpaper you are working on is a pirated upload of a paid LWP in the market. The original author of the LWP would probably be happy to help paid customers get it working.
I'm all for you learning how to code up some cool stuff for the community, and I wish you the best, but stealing other people's stuff isn't the way to go.
hmm, was not intentionally "stealing" I paid for it, the developers response is " LWP's don't work on hero, sorry" so I thought I would try to make it work for me, I'm pretty sure if I could provide a way for hero users to use it they would all gladly pay the $1 as I did, as it stands I "pirated", yet another, unusable app, hey hero users come get your free, unusable, paid app

That's cool...your OP links to a mediafire download for a paid app, so I didn't realize you knew it was paid. It's lame that the guy won't fix it, but I guess those of us slumming it on the hero have to get used to doing things ourselves, eh? Good luck to you...it is a cool LWP.
That wallpaper sticks just fine on my hero. Running Aloysius 2.1 maps version.

wow, I seriously apologize for all of this, all I wanted to do was give back to our community, I have been taking for a year plus & thought it was time to step it up a notch, I did not want to start fights, sorry, if any mods want me to take it down I will.(oh,I really paid for it, that's my mediafire account, after it didn't work I pulled it off my phone to try and work with it.) First off theycallmegq. This site does not promote pirating anything. Read the forum rules posted by binary. Who might just ban you if your not careful.
That being said. I would highly recommend the for dummies set of books for starters. Thats what im doing with linux and programming. Also there is a book specifically on the android platform and development at the book stores as well. Last i checked in the computer at barnes and noble i think it was they were coming out with a new one i think had to do with java and android. There was also a post in here a while back about learning development after you have an understanding of the basics at least. Might want to search for that after a couple of weeks. Good luck with your adventure. Im sure the creator of the lwp wouldnt mind you helping make it better.
I think the poster used an unfortunate choice of words. If this was a site concerning iphone OS development it definately would be considered hacking. Modifying Apple OS in anyway is a NO NO! It was hard for me "At first" to get past the "Openess" of Android. Thats why we sould be screaming anytime we see E-fuses in phones (Motorola) or No sideloading of Apps (AT&T). I for one am thankful to be able to have source code to work with and a group such as this one to help out. My little hero is thankful too ... Without you guys I would have an EVO by now...
As far as Java Programming, do a search on "Java Tutorial". Theres a lot at your finger tips.
Try:
www.javapassion.com
just recently changed to a subscription based site, but first few chapters of each class are free to try and learn, even have an android class strarting at the end of the month.
That LWP works fine for me too.

newbie about to buy viewsonic g tablet, questions, totall beginer here

so im about to do it. been wanting a tablet for some time and as nice as the xoom looks for 1/2 the price this make sense.
can a newbie root? i dont know the first thing about programming. ive searched the forums, and i see roms, and all these things i dont even know what they are. TNT programs, which sound not so newb friendly lol....and i want to know if there is a basic root that i may be able to follow. root for dummies is what im looking for.
and also, if i screw this up can i revert back to the original way this thing was?
sorta nervous to order and not use it to the fullest potential but seems like without rooting its not worth a crap.
i know probably asked 100 times, but ive searched and just cant find basic rooting 101 concepts. read the faqs - nothing so straight forward that i found.
thanks in advance. if i find the support i need here which seems likely im going to order the viewsonic shortly
First, welcome!
And then...
Start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
This was the post that helped me the most. Have you rooted and installed new ROMs on Android devices before? It's not difficult, but does require that every last instruction is read. Twice. And look at posts about people "bricking" their tablets to see what they might have done wrong, or what they had to do to fix their problems. Don't worry about rooting; I've rooted a MyTouch 3g, a TMobile Vibrant and this tablet and it was the easiest by far. I'd like to say that the stock software sucks, but I can't. I purchased this tablet because I knew I would be rooting and ROMing and only had about ten minutes in the store and ten minutes at home with the original software. It wasn't horrible, but I do know that Vegan 5.1 flies and is very stable.
READ READ READ and search your face off for your problems before posting. Many people frown on oft asked questions here. I see a lot of people writing about how easy it is to search to get your answer, but I'm not a fan of the XDA search function for many reasons. So, Google is your friend. When searching Google, be sure to state your issue clearly and concisely, and in as few words as possible. Oh, but do include "XDA" in your search, or "site:forum.xda-developers.com" if you want to only search the XDA Developers forum.
Happy modding!
(1) We don't mind newbies, although it's nice if they actually respect the hard work of the people here by pressing the shift button to capitalize where appropriate. It would also be appreciated if they don't use run-on sentences.
(2) We highly recommend against modding for people like you. Just turn it on, update what viewsonic has for you, and everything will run just fine. We recommend you play with the gtab for a while before taking the plunge.
(3) You don't need to know programming to root. This thread will give you step by step instructions on how to do the essential things of modding. These instructions are so easy even a cave man could do it.
(4) That said, again, their stock rom + update should be good enough for someone like you. I have 2 gtabs. I've modded one and kept the other one as is. Trust me, it's more than sufficient for your needs.
thank u!!! im going to review that. now thats a detailed step by step which couldnt be answered easily but somehow seems doable for a newbie thanks. brings me closer to ordering.

I think your whole thing is condescending, including that rant you posted in the General section about the "wooters". If you wanted to be helpful you could do a write up and review about the stock ROM and make suggestions of what to do to make it better. This singling out of a group of people is rude and dangerous. You create an environment that is hostile and discourages fresh ideas. There are always kinder words to use and gentler ways to guide people.

Not to mention there be members who may not use English as a primary language and therefore may not be familiar with all of its intricacies. Respect begets respect. You get more when you offer more.
Well, here is my thought on why people are giving it such bad reviews.
(1) They compared it to the ipad right out of the box. Yes, the stock UI isn't the greatest thing, but it's usable. And after the update, it should work just fine.
(2) People were expecting an ipad when they bought this device. This is why I've been repeating over and over that this ain't no ipad.
(3) People have money coming out of their ears, so they want the bests and greatests. The slightest disadvantage and they will make it sound like the tablet exploded or something.
(4) Which brings me to my next point. People like to exaggerate.
I've always been a simple person. I like to work with what I have. I also hate Apple products with a passion. I only own one Apple product. I got my ipod (30 gig one) as a gift years ago. I've been thinking for a while to look for something that is light weight so I could drag it along for work and other activities. My laptop seems like it weighs a ton some time. That said, after I've done the appropriate moddings and installed the apps I wanted, the viewsonic gtab seems like a dream come true for me. It works incredibly fast. I didn't buy this thing to watch videos and listen to music. I have my tv and ipod for that. That said, I really think viewsonic is sitting on top of a goldmine with this device. I don't know why they haven't done more to publicize it.

Well, I apologize if what I said offended some people. But what I stated was a fact. Because of all the exaggerated reviews of how god-aweful the stock UI and screen are, average people get the wrong idea. They feel that they have to mod the device the moment they get their hands on it.
All I'm suggesting people do is give the updated stock rom a chance. Give it a few days before they decide to take the plunge. There's really no prettier way to say it.

Maybe if the echo wasn't so God damn ugly and had better hardware.. people would buy it
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.

np man i might see if i can pick this up, save a little money, i got an evo soon to be a 3d too, for my phone, and as of now im rocking the ipad 2 as my tab, hopefully these new tabs can take advantage of honeycomb
In before this thread derails.
Honestly right now the iPad looks more appealing than any Android OS tablet. I think Android needs to work on polishing Android for tablets a bit more.
That Sony dual screen is just atrocious.

Idk about that. Have u seen the moto zoom. They r pretty polished and r running honeycomb. Very responsive and very fast
Yeah buddy, and the asus transform is $399 for the 16gb model, or $499 for the 32gb model.
Spam. In wrong section. Has nothing to do with Evo. Op needs to learn where to put non-Evo related threads.

Some people find this info quite nice, some people like you don't. You aren't a mod so if you have nothing postivie who cares what you have to say? Tired of people thinking they're in charge, and the flamers too. Go to 4chan if you wanna troll.

Just report the thread at the top right hand corner to see it go away. I feel like I shouldn't visit Android Central on a daily basis because I can find all the articles on the XDA Evo section.
I don't doubt that this dual screen idea could be more of a future norm, so long as it is done right. Have gotten some hands on time with the Echo and while you sort of get the idea, it just really seems tacky. At least I came away from the Echo with that feeling. I'm more interested in dual screen displays than 3D as well.
So long as it's done right, all around.

Based on your logic common citizens shouldn't try to stop little old ladies from getting mugged, unless they are police officers. Your logic shows a small picture view.

umadbro?????
If they'd build this so that there's a flush (seemless) connection between the screens I'd seriously consider these ....as it is their just.... stupid.
Keep the thread on subject. I am moving it to General as it does not belong in the EVO section.
The concept is nice, however I just cant get over the gap in the middle between the two screens, it really ruins the experience for me. Now if they do it RIGHT and allow true multitasking between each window this will be a good competitor; the screens are 5.5 inches so that's just big enough to allow full featured browsing/operation on each screen.

ROM Development Guide?

Remember about a month ago when XDA came out with a book about rooting and flashing ROMs?
I was just wondering if there were any books (or guides maybe) like that, that showed how to make ROMs from scratch, not through all of these annoying kitchens. (Don't really like them, they make me feel like a noob... of course I suppose I am)
So whatever, that's really about it. Thanks guys!
(Oh by the way, I have tried Nero's ROM guide and wasn't a huge fan, also I'm getting another computer solely for the purpose of Ubuntu too if that matters at all.)
...subscribing, also just out of interest I'm trying out Lubuntu, Ubuntu 12.04 server too!

Pretty awesome, never heard of Lubuntu before now. I'd consider it, but any recent tutorials I've looked at use Ubuntu. (Sadly though, they're ridiculous! For example, there was a post about compiling Jelly Bean from source code, and its practically not even in English! I mean I know some coding and all, but despite that, nothing is explained. It just do this like "do this and then do this and this and then we're done. An don't worry, there won't be a troubleshooting page because we know all you out there are experts.)
Whatever, that's my rant. Hopefully a mod will come along some time soon and point us in the right direction. Fingers crossed. :highfive:

Lubuntu is basically a lighter version of Ubuntu, still runs on the same principles as in version number etc. I understand your frustration with regards to where to find "how to" code, but, my view on tutorials is exactly that where aspects of what you're supposed to be doing are not explained. I think we need to be looking into another category for books, e.g. a coding practice used for android. See what happens
Yeah I suppose you're right. Off to Google/Amazon!
(of course if anyone sees this and would still like to post, by all means, do so!)
EDIT: After a god half an hour of searching, I think I finally found it. The problem is, you're gonna need $50 if you want to snag it.
http://www.amazon.com/Android-Foren...-Security/dp/1597496510/ref=cm_cr_dp_asin_lnk
It is by far the most in detail book I've seen. Just look at the overview of the chapters! It's just like what I was looking for! Woohoo!
Oh man $50. Hard being a broke student.
I would love to learn to. Anyone can tell me where to start? What languages i need to learn (java, linux, c++, etc)?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If your tomato just so happens to be running a version of android that can support the Kindle app, you can actually get it for about $40 too...
And while I'm not an expert in this field (in fact I really don't know too much) I do know that android uses java and converts it to another language using the dalvik machine. So if you really have no where to start, try learning some java.

Offtopic: I think tomatoes dont taste good at all.
I'm a fan, but that's just me. (end of off topic conversation before a mod takes down the thread.)

(nah I love this convo) I think theyre pretty sour.
Thanks
This is a great guide thanks
Thanks, good guide !
That book looks more related to security than anything else. Anything for development in particular?
If you look at the insides though, it shows how to create the internals, with step by step pieces. Chapter 7 (I think) also has 6 popular methods to obtain root access.
Look at the sneak peek and read the summaries of the chapters. It's definitely going on my Christmas list.
EDIT: As for anything solely for development, I have yet to find anything like that. Hence the reason for posting this thread.
Well, my tomato can support kindle.
Anyway, great thread. Hope someone who can help us reads this and decides to help us further.
