2011 G2X - Year in Review - T-Mobile LG G2x

What were the topics on the G2X that stood out for you in 2011?
Mine were laughing at another battery post..

Mine would have to be a mix between the battery posts, the early screen issue posts, and the more recent ICS rumors. The ICS ones were funny mostly because everyone was saying that LG announced ICS or the G2x when all LG said was that is was coming to the P990 (O2x).

Do I need to wipe? A question asked far too much.

Ya, 4, 5, and 7 have pretty much ruined my first smartphone experience. I waited for this phone when I decided to make my first purchase and I got hosed. My next purchase will definitely be after something has been out for a couple of months.. I went against my only rule on new tech... Watch the boards, then if necessary, wait for the 2nd manufacturing run.. LG and Nvidia have lost all of my future smartphone purchases.

G2x vs optimus 2x

I know these two phones are the same essentially but since there are two different forums I'm assuming that roms and kernel on g2x dont work on optimus 2x?

It might be an easy port since its the same exact hardware minus the radio/antenna, but as far as simply flashing a G2x rom on the O2x then its a problem. It should not work unless its been modified.

Here's a thread warning about flashing an O2X rom onto a G2X. I'm assuming the warning goes both ways.

I'm sorry to hear. I can say that the O2x rom actually looks pretty interesting though. I'd love to try it out.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
o2x roms will work on g2x phones BUT it also flashes a baseband from the o2x that will jack your phone up wont allow you to make calls and there is no way to repair this yet on the g2x
I would really love to try stock optimus2x rom it looks slick kinda surprised no one has ported one over yet
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
same thing is going on with the vibrant and sgs4g their the same phones but if you flash roms from vibrant to sgs4g or sgs4g to vibrant it will brick your phone but the devs found a way so they can flash roms from those phones it will be nice to do something like that between o2x and g2x.
o2x roms and themes are very cool

It's just touchwiz or something really similar. You could replicate it with CM7's Captivated theme and a custom launcher.

TMO is going to switch out my device...switch or stay?

I qualify for their "multiple problem" deal where since they keep sending out replacement devices and I still have issues, they asked me if I wanted to upgrade.
I understand, there is a lot of bias here, but I'm hoping to get some of you who aren't biased. Do I want to keep trying with the G2X (I already have 2.3.3 for those making that pitch, I updated already...don't care for some things), get the Sensation, the MyTouch/MyTouch Slide or other option maybe?
I am quite happy with my g2x but if you aren't due to issues then try the sensation. No phone is perfect, my wife has sensation and quite happy with it. I hate sense but it does have a great camera and a larger qhd screen.

Uh wut? Nexus ICS alphas have been floating around for weeks.
The evo is always going to have more roms available at any given time, since there's a ton of devs working on that phone... And more options because of Sense.
First of all the things we have are sdk ports so they don't count. Second I would rather have a rom with half busted stuff than nothing like we do now. Wahh it sucks.

I don't think that someone has a decent working ICS right now.
But come on, don't start a ton of new threads just to aks why there's no ics. I know it's exciting but after all it's just ICS xD
And it's just a max. of 1 month waiting time 'till the ota gets out. I would go so far to say that no one of us will die from waiting
Max one month is a huge overstatement. It will be a miracle on xda street if we get an ota in a month. Mark my words.

Should I swap SGS4G for G2X or Sensation 4G?

It's been a tough haul for me with Tmobile/Samsung Galaxy phones. I started with a Vibrant with its GPS problems. After two T-mobile Vibrant swap outs and various software updates that accomplished little, they swapped for a SGS4G.
The SGS4G was no better on GPS and T-mobile wouldn't swap to anything else.
I never had a data contract, just used wifi for data. Last week I jumped on the $30 unlimited data prepaid plan. Well it turns out my SGS4G won't get cell data, not on Froyo not on Gingerbread.
So T-mobile now offers me a swap for another SGS4G or a LG-G2X or a HTC Sensation 4G. I'm posting here in case anyone with SGS4G experience also has some with the other phones.
It seems to me that its obvious I should switch. Both the LG and HTC are dual core and the Samsung is not. HTC has already committed to ICS on it, and LG has at least said the no ICS for G2X rumor has no basis. We all know Samsung is incredibly slow at updates, and their certainly is skepticism in this forum that they will ever have ICS for the SGS4G.
As to which to switch to, I'm not sure. The ICS commitment by HTC is certainly a plus. After my experience with Samsung my main issues are:
-- A well working GPS
-- Timely software updates
-- A potent hacking community
Any comments to help me decide?
I'd say get the sensation, i would if i ever got the chance. This phone is a great phone, don't get me wrong, but i just like the sensation. Never had an lg so i have no clue what that phone brings. I got this phone not knowing about XDA and modding. Once i found out about those, i kinda regretted getting this phone, but now things are better since we have official gingerbread and a great community that's here to help. I'm getting off topic now, so to answer your question, I'd say the sensation. OR you can stick with this phone and see what the future brings.
Hope i helped.
Sent from my rockin' Galaxy S 4G using XDA Premium App
I definitely agree. Sensations commitment to ICS is good enough for me but the hardware facts just beat out the sgs 4g. I do like the sgs 4g screen and resolution tho. But other than that, get sensation. My mom (I'm only 17 so i haven't moved out ) has it and I've been able to play with it. Hands down just a better phone. And i regret getting the phone too. This is my first android and did me soooo much justice, but for Modding and rooting it just isn't exactly the best. Sensation all the way. Hope I helped
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Yea the sensation should be your choice..I bought this phone without the intention of rooting it or anything, also I lost my last one so i needed a phone quick..if i knew the info i know now,i would of had another phone like maybe the mytouch 4g..So yea in short make the switch, easy.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Samsung has neglected this phone in terms of updates. The Sensation is great if you want ICS, if that's not the biggest deal to you I'd get the Samsung Galaxy SII, as Samsung phones are well built, but with any Samsung phone don't expect an update within any timely manner.
I would get anything.g that could run CM. wink.

oh and get the sensation. Even though I think you already knew that before you posted this thread just to make all of us jelous
I owned a g2x and it was bad. Very very bad. It was also the first batch of them. I hear they fixed a lot of the issues. I own a sgs4g and a sensation. The sensation has more options Rom and kernel wise. Speed wise my sgs4g with all its mods is just as fast. The sgs4g seems to have faster data speeds. The screen on the sgs4g is better. If custom roms and mods are what your after get the sensation. Performance wise a properly set up sgs4g may have a slight edge do to data speed. The sensation is confirmed to be getting ics as well a.d they are working on a port as well. Hope that helps.

I'm kicking myself. After they offered me the Sensation or G2X, I waited a week to make a choice and get past Thanksgiving. When I called back their database had changed and would only offer another SGS4G.
Apparently the database changes from time to time based on factors I can only guess. They said that at the moment for a Vibrant they had multiple choices.
That sucks. Big time.

We have been forgotten.

Yep no jellybean for us yet. JB makes ics seem as slow as am ibm pcjr. We should demand HTC give us JB instead of ics
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
Developers need an ICS leak to make anything new, how many GB ROMs do you want? As far as the CM9 RIL has proved to be a huge problem. So no, developers still have Thunderbolts they just need something new to work with, instead of pointing fingers at them, point them at HTC.

While it's not the fault of the dev's, we have been forgotten. The thunderbolt is unfortunately old news and most likely won't have much more activity until we get ICS/JB.
Its more like HTC doesn't give a crap about our phones anymore. It's unacceptable that they haven't put out an update sooner.
I'm still here!
Most phones were forgotten (or stagnated) on Verizon when the Nexus came out. Anyone who didn't see that coming was just a tad short-sided.

I dont expect any additional development until ICS is "officially" released for the TBolt.
I dont believe we'll ever see an official release of JB for our phones.

Bionic already has 4 ICS leaks...and blame HTC. Anyway, the Incredible S (GSM Dinc 2) got ICS today. Here's the thing - the Thunderbolt was replaced by the Rezound a long time ago, and it's honestly not that great of a phone anyway. It was the first LTE phone, but the specs were far behind other phones that came out before it. It will be nice when it finally does get ICS (and it will, but remember the 2.3.4 update took a very long time as well), but most people (like me) who bought this phone will have already moved on, or be well on their way to a better phone by the time it finally is released. As far as being forgotten by developers - not forgotten, but they have moved on to better phones. The Thunderbolt is old hat - 1Ghz Snapdragon w/ 768MB RAM, the developers have moved on to better things, for the most part.

That and point really at Google for.this messed up veal they allow which is so stupid. We need to stop overlays on android and have the same user experence as any other device a unified way. On touch six.you select wick widget it brings up any available wick if one is not already selected on sense and stock that does not happen. Not a great user way here.

Pretty sure specs weren't far behind anything when the tbolt came out. If you're this concerned sell it and buy a bionic. Go to craigslist, they are cheap.
