ive been flashing my g2x with just roms but i a reed in all the other forms people say the flash a kernal and a rom, so y and how do u flash a kernal and do u do it before or after flashing a rom, and what is the best kernal???
Kernel is flashed after the rom. Probably one of the main reasons people change their kernel is to allow them to overclock/undervolt their CPU. It can allow overall better performance and battery life.
You just have to be careful when you're altering stuff at that level. You could end up with a very unstable system, and maybe not even be able to boot into your OS. Make sure you research first and know what you're flashing. Not all kernels are compatible with your phone, and of those that are, some only support certain roms. Just make sure you know what you're flashing and keep a working/stable nandroid backup on-hand in case you mess something up beyond fixing.
By all means experiment with your phone. Just be smart about it and have a backup plan if possible.

If you read in the development section here and check the threads for the different kernels, each one lists the roms its compatible with. Trinity and Faux's kernels are 2 popular ones and they're both compatible with eaglesblood.
What is your battery doing? How is it acting weird?

it drains alot, i want a good rom with a kernal to last me all day, im a heavy used, with internet on my phone, what rom and kernal are u using?

I use Ultimate G2X 1.0 and I just use the default kernel that comes with it. Its a 2.2 stock-based rom and it just works. Decent battery life. To ensure long battery life though I use an extended life battery.
I haven't experimented much with different kernels. Read through the threads for the different kernels and you should get a pretty good idea of the pros and cons of each one.

Understand that development on this rom has ceased. That said, it's a fully functional rom and very stable. Its been my daily driver since May. I flash other roms on a regular basis to see if something better has come along. For me, Ultimate is the one. Its personal preference though. You may not like it. You may want gingerbread. The only way you'll know is to try.

Rom with a kernel maybe best from what i read so i don't have to flash that also.
I've read a lot eyes getting tired. What i'm looking for. Any reccomendations?
Everything works, including 4g and wifi.
Better battery life.
Overclock IF i want using setcpu.
Not a lot of built in apps just google apps.

Welcome to the Nexus ... you're going to love this phone. With that said, you need to jump in and do some reading. There is no shortage of opinion on which rom, kernel, or even GB vs ICS ... is best. It very much depends on your likes, dislikes, etc. I assume that you have a gsm device, so make sure to flash the appropriate roms, kernels, etc. Lastly, there is lots of help available, but it's always best if you dig in and bring yourself up to speed with what's already been posted in these great forums. after few weeks i tested it, i find this phone a very good one and I don't feel the need to jump in a custom rom. I rooted it, installed a busybox and the clockwork and I added some apps to eliminate some gaps like the missing notification when the screen is off (I installed the noled apk for it) or like a switch off or switch on of the screen using the power button (I used an apps called accendi scermo and I switch on and off the screen using the phone sensor). The only thing that miss on this phone is an fm radio offline. I'm still searching a solution.
Stock rom: more stable, less features
Custom rom: less stable, more features
Well if you want to be normal. Than good for you.
Now a custom rom and kernel can give you unlimited privilages to things you can never imagine possible. Undervolting your device to give you brain blowing battery life or over clocking to give you awesome graphics.
A custom rom like CM9 or AOKP (there are way more than two but im just listing the popular ones) is of course better than stock since... well if it wasnt why would they make it. A kernel links your hardware to your software, meaning you can do some tweaking in the middle. If you find the right kernel and rom mix you can have a wopping 15 days standby on your battery (eg CM9 and Matr1x Kernel).
Now thats just the basics. if you are interested and want more information. Just do a bit of research and reading in this forum and ask questions in those forums. Hope this helps.

I just got my G2x from my Optimus V and I'd like to flash a new ROM. I've already rooted it. What ROM is stable and as close to pure Android as possible? I hate all the bloatware that come on these phones from the carriers. I've been reading through all the ROMs in the Dev section but my head is spinning.
If you want super pure, your best bet is probably to stick with stock, since the G2x came with vanilla Android. Use Titanium Backup to freeze/uninstall all the bloat you want gone.

To help make it even more responsive I use Auto Memory Manager (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lim.android.automemman) set to Aggressive. I've also used Weapon G2x but prefer CM7.2

CM7.2 (really any CM7 based Rom) is the way to go. Stay away from ICS if you just want everything to work since Nvidia iz not releasing drivers needed for hardware acceleration on the G2x.
Few things to watch out for...
1. Memory managers/app killers are generally a bad idea for stability/battery life
2. Watch what baseband you are on. March2012 has broken bluetooth calling. You may need owain's baseband fix to patch an incompatible rom with your baseband.
3. Some CM7 users have better luck with Morfic's Trinity kernels vs Faux.
4. Lots of overclocking will likely result in stability probs regardless of your Rom/kernel combo (beware of undervolting too)
5. Stock 2.3.4 is now a viable option for stablity. + u could even overclock with Faux's 014b kernel for rooted stock.
6. Read the forums!
Get comfortable with making backups in CWM (oh you shouldn't use CWM Touch - or ROM Manager to flash anything - CWM 5.0.2.0 is fine) That way u can expriment, but restore back if it all starts going to shjt.

Yup, I've been reading a lot and saw some of the things you've mentioned, but thanks for the ideas.
I haven't touched basebands, should I do anything with them?
I'm on 7.2 Stable, do I need a new kernel to OC/UC? I can't seem to get it to work as nothing comes up when I'm in the CM menus.
I'm familiar with nAndroind backups as I did them religiously on my last Optimus V phone.
EDIT: Nevermind, I flashed Faux 050 now and can OC/UV now.
Looks like you are doing fine. Congrats on figuring out how to flash a Rom/kernel.
Faux 050 stable and CM7 based Temasek rom is what I've been running for weeks now. If you don't have obnoxious static during phone calls (sounds like loud popping) - you don't have a baseband/rom compatibility issue. The baseband is just the firmware that controls the various radios in the device. Some have reported clearer calls and quicker GPS with the new (March 2012) baseband, but the hassle of upgrading to it is - well - a hassle. Also, If you use like to use bluetooth for calls, you need to NOT upgrade...
I am on the new baseband (I don't have blueteeth) and I'll sometimes need to flash the compatibility fix that enables you to run the new baseband with roms designed for the old baseband (or now, for roms/basebands on our international cousin the LG P990). Check owain's Domination thread for his "baseband fix", it will probably come in handy since some roms authors are not clear about whether their rom is for the new or old baseband.
You would just flash the fix through CWM after flashing a Rom, if you find that you have the call sound static...
You might also need a free app called "Get Ril" to fix your Radio Interface Layer. It automatically checks for compatibility and will automatically apply the RIL it detects that you would need if your calling sound has static.

Things seem to be going well with CM7.2+Faux050. I'm waiting till the end of the month for my Virgin Mobile month to end before I start up with T-mobile $30/month plan so I won't know if calls are clear for now. I'll try gVoice sometime soon just to test it though.
EDIT: Once I'm sure this ROM/Kernel is stable I'll do a nAndroid backup and play around with some of the ICS ROMs.

I sometimes use GrooveIP with google voice. U 2? Mine works ok and I am thinking of cutting back the number of T-Mobile minutes I pay for each month. Let me know how internet calling works for you...

I use GrooveIP on my other phone where it doesn't work on 3G b/c VM service is so ridiculously slow. It should work on 4G though, but I won't be able to test until the end of the month.
Gotcha. Be aware too that T-Mobile's "4G" is really more like 3G in most places. I see speeds between 2-5 Mb/s. I really only use my GrooveIP at home on my relatively fast Wi-Fi so I am not going to be the best person to talk to about how well it all works on T-Mobile's data network at our "4G" speeds.
Anyhow, its been good chatting. I gotta get some sleep now. Night...

Well, when you come from 100-140kbps 2-5mbps is screaming fast! As long as data is reliable inside buildings around town I'll be a happy camper. It's late here too, but I can't stop playing with my new phone
I spoke too soon... Battery was at 50% a minute ago and now it's stuck on 100%. Tried rebooting and wiping battery stats but no good.

There were some problems flashing some things with Touch. I can't remember which right now. Maybe Trinity kernels?

So I just rooted a friend's MyTouch 4G Slide and now trying to figure out which ROM to use. I have her trying JellyKang 1.8 which so far has been a horrible nightmare in terms of battery life on her device. So is there any advice on either a better ROM that doesn't have a battery drain issue or a kernel that might work better with JellyKang?
Also how hard is it to s-off this device? The laptop I would be using is running Windows 7 x64 if that helps any. I noticed mentions of the wire trick but beyond that what do I need in order to get this done? This would make swapping kernels much easier.

A "best ROM" thread always gets a lot of controversy. Everyone has different needs and opinions on what is/isn't important to them. If best battery life and everything working without glitches is paramount (my criteria), then a stock-based ROM like Miktouch 0.7 will work best for you. There are some newer ROMs that offer good performance with minimal glitches, though, so read through the comments on them in the Dev forum and make your informed decision.

Yeah I certainly understand what you mean by controversy. I'll try Miktouch since to be honest my friend isn't quite liking the AOSP/CM experience so far. Thanks!
