Connect to Ad hoc access point, why does it work? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed that when I use "wireless tether for android users" on my phone (free open source on the market) that I can connect my TF 101 and use the access point. However I thought that Android had issues connecting to Ad hoc access points, which is what Wireless Tether creates. Not that I'm complaining or anything, but does anyone know what the story is here? Is this something that ASUS has done in their updates?

Yes Asus made it possible a few updates ago.

It is very nice considering the difficulty experienced with other Android devices. I don't know why Google has never fixed this since the fix appears to be a few lines in a file.

I had SGT-P1010 with Froyo. I had to use ZT-180 to be able to connect to adhoc hotspots. With Gingerbread there was no problem any more.

Cable Tethering on a Mac

Hey guys, I've been trying to figure out how to use Internet Connection Mode on my Thunderbolt and MacBook Pro. Every time when I plug TB to my mac and choose Internet Connection mode, I can see my Android device in Network preferences on my Mac but I have no idea which settings to put in. It clearly doesn't work out of the box, and I expected that.
I've been trying to research and figure out what the solution to this problem is, but had absolutely no luck. Do I need to install anything on a mac in order to get this to work? Any help is appreciated.
Thank you!
I remember this issue from my EVO, so it's probably the same. Macs for some reason or other can't use the USB tether on Android phone. It has something to do with how the USB driver in OSX is implemented.
It works in Windows after installing a driver. And, surprisingly, it works in Linux automatically.
For Mac the alternative is to use something like PDAnet or Easytether if you want to do USB tethering.

So there is no way to tether it on a MAC? That's a downer.
What needs to be installed on Windows 7 in order to use cable tether?
Thanks.
Just plug the phone in and install the drivers, it will then work in windows with the built in "internet connection mode", however i still use pdanet, easy and I like the built in sms agent

The Mac will need PDAnet or Easytether. The built-in option will not work.
On Windows, it will prompt you to install the drivers automatically.
I take back my "it just works" on Linux. It used to with my Evo, but I can't get the Thunderbolt to work at all.
Hey guys!
So is there no way to get a free usb tether of the 3g/4g internet on a mac computer? You would think all it would take would be to figure out the DHCP info that the TB requires. I could be wrong, but that is how I used to get my blackberries to tether to my macbook pro back in the day. If anyone has any info on this, I would appreciate it! I would love to be able to tether my TB to my iMac or mbp thru usb and have it be free and get the full speed that the TB can pull down. Also, it means Verizon has no way of detecting that you are tethering (after all the free Mobile Hotspot is only until May 15th). I need to use this as my main internet source. Hopefully they get 4g deployed to River Falls, WI soon. They have a little bit now on the north end of town, but it should be coming here soon!
Thanks again for all your guys' help

I'm not sure how Verizon wouldn't be able to detect that you're using Internet Connection Mode on their own phone. I hope you're right.
Verizon can definitely track that you're tethering - I use Easy Tether on my MacBook Pro and it works great
Could someone explain to me how they would know if you are tethering if you are not using their mobile hotspot application? If you tether with a rooted phone or use a cable tether with a 3rd party app, all Verizon should see is that data is being requested by the phone. The phone then uses the 3rd party app's api to direct the traffic to your laptop/computer, etc. The only indication you might be tethering Verizon should be able to see is the increased amount of bandwidth you are using every month. Someone please tell me if they have changed this on the TB because I think it would violate privacy laws as they have never been able to do this in the past. Thanks
I believe he was saying that Verizon can detect that you're tethering if you use the built-in functionality, even on a custom ROM.
They cannot detect it if you use a 3rd party app like PDAnet or Easytether, since that data appears to be coming from the phone itself.

I can tell you that my Transformer connects perfectly to the mobile hotspots on both my HTC Desire and Galaxy Tab.
Does your WiFi Router application create a real hotspot, or is it an adhoc network? If it is adhoc, it probably won't work out of the box, and I think you'd need to be rooted in order to make the necessary changes.
Regards,
Dave
Hi Dave,
I can't actually distinguish between the two (real hotspot vs adhoc network), but I did start a Desire HD rom on my HD2, then started the WiFi Hotspot app that comes with it.... and surprise, surprise it works....
Good catch and thanks this will have to do until I figure out what to do with the WinMobile WiFi router.

Hi there,
Does usb tethering work? Well, for sure, the native usb tethering won't work, because there are no drivers, but is there an app to make it work? (@HD2 with DHD Rom)

I don't know, there is no usb on the tablet only on the keyboard (which I don't have). As far as I can see in the Adnroid settings "usb tethering" is available though.
Hope this helps,

Hi Guys,
Did you work out the original problem with the Wi-Fi router on the HTC HD2 and the Asus Transformer, im using the exact same combo and they will not see eachother (Wi-Fi) No Wi-Fi at work cos of Security but now i dont have comms to my tablet
Thanx Guys
I achieved this by using the Wifi Tether application, it requires root on the phone (Android phone here, sorry). The biggest problem with mobile-to-wifi internet is that most applications will create ad-hoc Wifi networks, as opposed to hotspots. Transformer with stock software will not even see an ad-hoc network, I imagine this is your issue, too. There two options here:
1) if you want to root the Transformer, it is possible to make it see an ad-hoc version, but changing one of the configuration files.
2) you can use Bluetooth tether instead of Wifi, for most situations it will do the trick. No need to root the TF then.
See this thread for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074317&page=1 (it is about droids, but may help anyway).
I'm also using the Wifi Tether app that came with MDJ ROM for HD2 and it works great... too bad the small battery on the HD2
I havea motorola Atrix,i can tether using barnacle a rooted app, stock mobil hotspot, and through blue tooth. Havent had an issue yet.
Same problem here HD2 (WinMo6.5) + Transformer
I don't want root my transformer (yet)

You don't have to root your transformer to use a mobile hotspot (takinga 3g signal and converting it into a wi-fi router)
If you have any rooted Android phone, you just need to install either Baranacle, Wireless Tether, or Open Garden. All are root-only apps, and you sometimes have to try each to get it to work. At first only open garden worked, wireless tether/barancle didn't. It's very doable though.

You do have to root your transformer for barnacle.
Barnacle creates an ad-hoc connection which the transformer won't see without first rooting and replacing the wpa_supplicant file. Most wifi tether applications do the same thing.

I had the same issue until I tried the settings below. I have a EVO 4G so I don't know if the HD2 is anything like it but if it is then you can try these:
Go into setting
Go into wireless and networks
Go into Hotspot Settings
Go to Menu and click on Advanced
Select LAN settings
Click on DHCP
After that you should be able to connect. If not then your setup is different then mine and won't work. It's worth a try though.
not much helpfull I guess but works fine on my xperia arc stock rom unrooted android 2.3 so no need to use apps at all

[Q] Ad-Hoc Wifi

I'm trying to connect my Note to an Ad-Hoc connection. I'm sure there is something obvious I am missing for why I can't see the Ad-Hoc connection from my note 10.1 but can't figure it out and didn't see anything here.
I posted my solution in another thread here with same topic. Refer to it. But the FoxFi app is the solution to this. Google the apk because it was removed from marketplace. Install it on phone. Then install foxfi add on, on phone, that's in marketplace. Then you should be good to go. Tablet will now pick up your tethering signal. Root is not needed either(for phone or tablet). App works great on pure stock. Works fine on my pure stock SG3.

I'm not really looking for a tether solution. I can tether to my phone just fine. I specifically want to know if there is a way to get the Note 10.1 to connect to and ad-hoc network for another reason. I do presentations and sometimes. Often I can do them right from the note using the All-Share Cast Dongle, but sometimes (due to issues w/ Dongle working with certain adaptors) I have to have my laptop connected to the projector and want to control it with remote desktop with my tablet. I want to do this without relying on my host having wifi I can use. So I need ad-hoc connectivity to connect to my laptop directly without having to lug around a wireless router.
On another note, out of curiosity I tried FoxFi and it doesn't work on my phone anyway. The built-in (stock) tether app works great and is all I need.
Lopk for a wifi direct type program for your laptop or try bluetooth dun. Type connection. Pdanet could ne a solution just not sure. Some type of device to device metwork is needed .if your laptop has iis there could be a solution in it.

Hi!
I want to ask you: Have you solved this?
I also need to connect to an ad-hoc.
I've read: on some other android devices they root and replace their wpa_suplicant. Does anybody know if it is also possible on Note 10.1 ?
Sry for my english...
Thx
Never did get it to work. I'm on stock without root and just being lazy. Accomplished my task with a $20 wifi router.

[Q] Barnacle tether Error help please?

Well i used to use a lg optimus one and i used Barnacle tether for wifi tethering to xbox 360 and It all worked great. Yesterday i bought a Samsung Galaxy tab 2 7.0 Gt-p3100.Today i rooted it with a program called odin and some other file all working great. Then i installed Barnacle tether to play some xbox live but when i tried to start it it shows an error
Code:
WIFI: Could not set ad-hoc mode of wlan0: Operation not supported on transport endpoint
So i tried an other Wifi there program And it dint work either then i tried the one thats already in android it works but i get nat error. When i used to use barnacle i never used to get that error. i cant use my lg optimus anymore cuz i sold it. Please help me I searched a lot and havent found a solution.
Barnacle tethering not usually supported with Galaxy Tab 2 7.0
As far as I can tell and in my experience with Barnacle and my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, the issue often is that the Galaxy Tab doesn't support viewing or connecting to ad-hoc networks. And most, if not all, of the apps available on the play store that say they can tether your wifi are set up by using an AD-HOC network to share their internet. So if you are trying to do what many people are then I assume you are using a android mobile phone to share the internet connection to your tablet, am I correct??
I have been asked by a couple of people about the possibilities of using their phone to tether their wifi connection to their android tablet, and it typically does not work. But I have found after hours of searching in these forums and on other sites that there are some scenarios in which you might be able to configure the two devices (with root of course, possibly with a patch and some file adjustments, or even maybe through a mod on both the phone and the tablet) so that they can share your mobile internet connection wirelessly. If you look in the forums for either your phone model and/or your tablet model you will find that some people have fixed the issue with wifi tethering from phone to tablet with the tools I mentioned. It seems like a common method that works for some people involves first having root access on both the tablet and the phone, then with the correct "wpa_supplicant" patch or mod, it is possible to fix the problem but I have tried it several times on different devices and with different methods to the process and only 1 time did I successfully get a decent internet connection from a mobile phone to an android tablet (it was on a galaxy tab2) while using a third party app from the google play store.
So it's not entirely impossible to tether your phone internet to tablet using an app like Barnacle or the other dozens of wifi tethers in the play store and even on other sites, but it just doesn't seem to be consistent on all devices and there isn't one exact or simple way to actually fix the issue. The alternative way to share your phones internet through wifi to a tablet that has always worked for me is if your phone actually has its own wireless tether or mobile hotspot app or function already built-in to the system. This type of wifi tethering does not use AD-HOC networking so there is no issue when it puts out a wifi signal for your tablet to pick up. I would definitely say keep searching in the forums here and even on the web in general for new apps for tethering or possible mods that fix the issue because there are a lot of people having this issue so chances are there are people working on a solution to the problems. Another way I've seen a friend get around the problem is by of course rooting his phone flashing recovery then installing a custom rom that had a mobile hotspot feature built-in to the system (because at that point his phone did not have the same feature in stock rom or system, and the many different wifi tethers we tried to use didn't seem to work on his tablet either). It took a lot of trial and error, meaning we had to just keep trying different apps, roms, set ups, mods, basically anything we could adjust or add to the phone and sometimes even the tablet, we tried over and over using different phones and a few tablets all different models and manufacturers just to see what might work. In the end he was using his HTC phone (i think it was an Incredible) with root and a custom rom that had mobile hotspot feature already in system as an optional tether, and we got a few different tablets to connect without any real issues, but each tablet is different so every now and then one of us had to play with settings or at the most root the tablet and tweak things to get a good stable and consistent internet connection from his phone that ultimately was coming from his wireless cellular service which was 3G on VZW back then.
With all of that stated, goodluck with your tethering, and I hope something I said might have helped you in any way or at least explained what the issue could be......I guess what I'm trying to say in general is that the stock galaxy tablet system doesn't pick up the AD-HOC type of network that most of those wifi tethering apps usually use to share the internet connection. So if there is any chance of getting it to work, it all depends on different tablet models or phone models or again the simple fix is not to use a tethering app and to use the built-in function or mobile hotspot feature that some phones have already. Or just do what I do, and keep searching forums and websites for different methods that other people have found that work and try them out for yourself to see if it applies to your set up as well.

[Q] wireless mobile hotspot hacking for android devices help.

Hi my name is jacob and I am a new on XDA and i have started a new thread because I have been all over the internet looking for a solution to this problem and none of them work. After i waved through all of the b******* i decided to come and see if any of you veterans can solve my problem.
i have been messing around with root and custom roms here recently maybe for a month and so far its great breathed new life into my old phone. Although I am having trouble with hacking my mobile phones hot spot (phone specifications and model listed below) i have tried everything wifi tether by TreVe, (hope I'm typing that right) changing tethering.dun in global settings database, (worked great until T-mobile eventually found me out) and everything else related to that. I am looking for a hack into my hot spot where T-mobile wont know s*** and it will work indefinitely. Reason why is I need internet for school and work purposes at home but, I live with my father and hes is on parole and can not have internet service at his home. I am a beginner but do have a little bit of sense in what I am doing if someone would kindly walk me through steps on how to completely unlock and hide my hot spot usage from T-mobile it would be greatly appreciated.
Also new thread for hacking native hot spot methods on any rooted android device.
My phone
Samsung Galaxy S2
carrier: T-mobile
model: SGH-T989 Hercules
no custom kernel (I understand I need some kind of net filter but can not find that online)
custom rom version: carbon 4.4.2 nightly
Thanks XDA community :good:
It won't be wireless, but PdaNet+ and USB tethering works just fine with a computer as long as you select the "hide tether usage" option. The program on the computer side also has a feature that turns your computer's wi-fi into a wi-fi router, which'll allow you to connect other devices.

yes i have tried PDAnet and that does not work for my needs as i also play the occasional online game with my PS4 I forgot to mention that sorry. I have tried to send out a wifi signal from my computer through CMD on my computer and none of my devices pick it up even though CMD says the signal is going out also done this with ADhoc networks with a LAN cable but did not work either. Thanks for the suggestion :good: I probably should have went into more detail with my post but I did not want to make it to terribly long sorry.

May it possibly hide my online gaming if I figure out a way to get reverse WiFi on my computer working will it still hide that or will it be detectable. I see my self as a somewhat computer buff but I put myself to shame when i cant get a reverse WiFi connection going from my computer. seems like a lot of trouble to go to for internet i wish there was a way to unlock native tethering and not jump through hoops. It would seem that it would be a simple fix and should also be free anyway since it is dealt with the phone's hardware not through the carrier american cell network providers are greedy that is like getting xfinity internet but before you can send internet to your devices you have to pay thirty dollars extra.
When you USB tether your phone to your computer with PdaNet+, all you have to do is select the "WiFi Share" option and set it up like any other hotspot (network name, password, etc). Couldn't be easier. I don't know how well this'll work for playing PS4 (or whatever) games, but I can use this setup to watch Netflix or youtube on my well enough.
There are ways to use the native hotspot on an Android phone, but all the "hacks" are done on the computer side. VPNs, browser masking, etc.

Method not working i still get the T-mobile up sell page through VPN's of all kind it masks the internet going through the computer but not the phone where the service originates. They still detect everything I am doing. I understand T-mobile has bots going through their lines that detects devices that are not mobile devices and shuts them down. If maybe there is a way to block T-mo completely from a mobile device and just sounds ridiculous but I know someone out there can find a way I have heard of peoples mobile data usage and their mobile hot spot gauge has not moved only mobile data was detected. I am not sure if this was false statements and was made up.

Hi Jacob, I got my Note 3's native personal wifi hotspot connected to my ps4 with around 18Mbps Download and 6Mbps Upload, I adjusted the APN settings on my phone and managed to get around the data restriction.
I can post the exact settings I changed if you think it might work for you?
