Notice: Official HTC Sensation RECALL (To fix power/volume button issues)... - HTC Sensation

NOTICE: OFFICIAL HTC SENSATION RECALL (TO FIX POWER/VOLUME BUTTON ISSUES)...
Just an FYI for people who didn't know already...
Since I bought my HTC Sensation earlier this year (Direct from T-Mobile phone sales the day it was released), I hadn't had even ONE FULL day of use out of it. Why? Well the first one, the power button was unresponsive and whenever it would work, the screen would turn off again before I could even drag the ring up to unlock the device (Which lead me to believe that the proximity sensor appeared to be defective as well).
Needless to say, I called up T-Mobile and notified them of these issues, and luckily (Since I was still in the buyer's remorse period), they sent me a brand new phone in a new sealed box (Instead of a refurb from the warehouse).
When this new one arrived, the proximity sensor issue seemed like it was fixed, but the power and volume buttons were still unresponsive 99% of the time. So I searched online for a fix, found some people with a similar issue claiming it was a software issue and that flashing certain ROMs fixed it, etc. While this may be true for some, it wasn't for me and for others. This of course, cemented my beliefs that it was in fact a hardware issue... at that point I pretty much gave up and went back to my G2x until the SGS II was released and got one (My current phone) to use as a daily driver.
I forgot about my Sensation all together (Until about 2 weeks ago). And just for the hell of it, tried to see if anyone sold an aftermarket rear clam shell (Not a cover, but the actual shell with the contacts for the antennas)... didn't have much luck there (Strike 1), so I stopped at a local T-Mobile reseller to see what the damage would be on a new one (Or if they had any official shells for it). Nope (Strike 2). However, after talking to one of the employees there and explaining my problem(s) with the phone and what lead me to believe that this was indeed a hardware related issue... Well, I don't think it was my luck, but a gift from the HTC gods above, that the same employee I was explaining these issues to, actually owned a Sensation for his personal use, which he had there with him. So he promptly said: "Let's swap out the rear shells and find out.", we proceeded to do so and as expected, my phone worked perfectly with his shell and his didn't work with mine. I had all the info I needed now...
So when I got home, I called up T-Mobile and tried to explain to them the issue. To which they bickered back and forth with me that they do not send out the shells, just the actual phone. And just getting a new phone to use with the [now second] defective clam shell I've received would not do me any good. After repeated attempts to explain this to the agent on the phone, I asked to speak with a manager. The manager understood perfectly and said something that shocked me. She said that HTC actually had a recall in place for this phone's rear shell for owners experiencing unresponsive volume and/or power buttons and that some users were even reporting the buttons falling out of the cover. She said there was nothing T-Mobile could do, but to get in touch with HTC and that this is a known issue for which they issued a recall for.
I ended up calling HTC and they ask for specific information you will need to provide them with if wanting a new shell... this information includes your phone's part number, serial number, IMEI, phone number and date of purchase/first use.
After this information is provided, you are given three ways to pick from to get the ball rolling... these are, one, pay for the new shell ($55.00 + S+H) and keep both the defective one and the new one, two, send my defective shell to them (I am responsible for paying S+H to get it to them; as well as a tracking number to have proof of delivery) and when they receive it, they will send out my new shell OR three, give them a credit card number to which they will charge $1.00 and release/refund after they get verification of the account. They will send out the new, replacement shell immediately and give you 14 days from the day you receive the new one to get them your defective shell at their door step (You are responsible for shipping and tracking once again) or they will charge the card on file the $55.00 for the cost of the new shell they sent you.
Although it does seem unfair that they are making the owners of the defective product pay for and be responsible for shipping, I decided to go with option three. Got my new shell and paid under $3.00 at my local post office to send back my defective shell with tracking. Then to make sure there would be no miscommunication or excuses for charging me $55.00, I called HTC and had them note my account with the tracking number, along with the date it was sent out.
I was surprised to see that this recall is not very widely known about, so hopefully you will all help me spread the word. It just isn't right for someone to pay $300-$400 for a phone that essentially becomes a paper weight unless they go through all of the uncompensated time to try and deal with multiple companies to get the issue(s) resolved. It was just extremely surprising to me that I hadn't seen many (If any at all) threads on the topic of this being a hardware related issue for a lot of people as well when I received 2 completely different Sensation phones from two completely different warehouses that essentially had the same exact issue(s). That was very bizzare.
Hopefully this post becomes a sticky and/or more wide-spread to let people know (Who were in a similar situation) that they are not crazy and they can fix there phone and get it operating/running like it should have been from day one...
Now of course, the phone number(s) to get a hold of HTC...
I actually got two numbers from T-Mobile, but never had to use the second one... the first one I list is the first one I called and took care of everything with... the second one is for any of you who may (For whatever reason) run into an issue with the first number or can not get a hold of anyone, etc. The toll free numbers (For those inside the USA) are:
1st number: 888-356-2375
&
2nd number: 888-716-3594
EDIT: Here are some more phone numbers you all can use if you happen to be outside of the USA ( If you're country isn't listed, check HTC's website and choose your continent/country from the drop down menu at http://www.htc.com/us/support/hotline ):
HTC United Kingdom: 08458900079 - Mon - Fri 8:00 am - 6:00 pm
HTC Global Warranty Service: 44 1279 206906 - (Mon - Fri) 9:00 am - 12 pm (Sat)
HTC Customer Service Worldwide: 886-3-3753252
HTC Customer Service Canada: 866-449-8358
HTC Customer Service Australia: 1300-482-482 - (Mon - Sun) 8:00am - 8:00pm AEST
Good luck and feel free to post any questions/issues that arise before, during and/or after your replacement is issued.
Take care and have a great day everyone!

P.S. I forgot to mention in the first post, to let you all know that the new replacement shell I received from HTC did indeed fix all of the hardware related issues (With the power and volume buttons) that I was experiencing; and am now happily using my Sensation as a backup phone to my SGS II, however, it is the first one I got to try ICS on, which is running like a champ! Thanks again everyone!

Hey thanks for details.. let me put whole post in two lines
"Those T-MobUS users or others who had power+ volume button issues may contact HTC with mentioned numbers to get a replacement as that solves the issue"

LOL. Ya thanks. You're right though, I could have summed it up in a lot less words (And probably should have or at least included a summary)... but some times I get carried away... oh well... better to have too much information than not enough

This is old news. During the summer, it was widely known that you could do this and do it for free. HTC was sending them out to people and not requiring your old one. People began scamming HTC and now look at what happened...Hassle was implemented. Good going you little craps. (You know who you are).

Oh... my bad then... I def didn't see/find any posts about it during my research, so I really wasn't sure how long the recall had been in place. But hopefully this will help at least one person out. Didn't realize they were doing it for free (Like they still should be) when it first began; however, it is understandable that if they were getting ripped by dishonest dinks who take advantage of the "honor system", then I guess it doesn't take many to spoil it for everyone [and is a little more understandable]. But to me, it was def worth it anyway... thanks again everyone!

Had the same problem..........
I had the same problem with the on & off button. I couldn't get the screen to stay on long enough to slide the ring. It happened after I installed a few free apps from the Market. I didn't have a problem like this until these installs. I found out that this LED program I installed caused the buttons to work improperly. Since I took if off a couple of weeks ago, I have had no probs.

Glad to hear it! Def glad this issue isn't as wide-spread as I thought... Or maybe it WAS and everyone just got their new shells over the summer when the recall was first issued?

thanks alot you F's!!!

My shell made quecking noises when pushed on the bottom end. Wrote a mail to htc and within a week or two I recieved a new one... Without having to send the old one back, nor paying for the shipment.
This was 4 weeks ago...

perhaps it's different for HTC US.
damn people here in the US... someone posts "free", even if it's a scam, people go apesh**t, leaving people with legitimate problems having to deal with the hassle.
ugh!

Hmm... that's weird, cuz I placed my order no more than 2 weeks ago... but you're probably right. It probably is different for HTC USA cuz of our stupid, greedy, American asses

For me, the volume buttons fell off entirely and I ignored it for a bit by using volume+ but it became very anoying having to unlock to put on vibrate or to silence a call or to simply browse recovery.
Called htc after submitting an email with support and they covered everything for me. I'm in the us of assholes by the way. I'm surpriced they assisted me so nicely but maybe that had to do with the fact that I had gone thru 9 sensations until finding the golden apple between the limes.

My volume button fell off, but i taped it back on. I think i may give them a call.

Glad I could help some people out! Keep us updated!

What about Europe ?

Confirmed:
I just called the first number and got a replacement back cover coming for my Sensation (I lost my volume buttons).
The didn't offer me any options, just that they where gonna tag me for $1 and ship the cover. Once I get I have 15 days to ship it back on my own dime (or they will charge my card $55).
I'm just happy to have a volume rocker back again!

I made this post back in August and people thought I was lyin...lol Oh well.

Ya, lol. Funny how things work out haha... Wish I had seen your thread back in August... Might have saved me $300 (From buying my Samsung Galaxy S II). But I needed a working phone at the time and had just given up on my Sensation that same month... Just glad this post is helping a few others, hopefully it will save them the headache(s) I went through...

You're right (Although I do not know what country you are in, so I will list a few larger ones; if you do not find the number you need here, or want to see if there is a closer office, go to http://www.htc.com/europe/contact/ and scroll down 'til you see the section that says "Customer Service", click on the button that says "Contact Us"; then when the new window pops up, click on the "Call Us" tab and choose your country from the drop down menu). I probably should have put this in my post originally... (And have now added the following in my original post):
HTC United Kingdom: 08458900079 - Mon - Fri 8:00 am - 6:00 pm
HTC Global Warranty Service: 44 1279 206906 - (Mon - Fri) 9:00 am - 12 pm (Sat)

Hope that helps!

Call AT&t Mobility to have Captivate shut down issue resolved with a new phone

So after months of shutdowns and BS from AT&T and Samsung, AT&T has finally come through. I spoke with someone in the "Office of the President" and after checking into the issue, they overnighted me a NEW Captivate (my phone was purchased in August, so I am well out of the 30-days). Their statement was that the defective phones are not supposed to be in the new lots or refurb lots, as it is against their procedures to knowingly sell defective phones. I would suggest taking your complaints there. The number is 1-800-331-0500. Be firm and upset, but be respectful. They will work with you.
I hope this helps to resolve the issues you are all having with swapping out your defective phones with a NEW Captivate.
It will help...eventually. I did the same thing, the first phone they sent me started doing the same thing (worse even) and rebooting withing 48 hours. I called them back complaining and the woman told me they knew of the issues and unfortunately they were recycling the phones that had issues for a while. She assured me this would not happen this time around. They sent me a 3rd one at that time (with next day shipping) and I recieved it on Monday. I'm happy to say I haven't had any problems with it...YET.
We'll see. I could tell the first one they sent me was an obvious refurb (the label under the battery had only one string of numbers and nothing else on it). The one I recieved this Monday was labeled and looked like an actual new one. The other one also seemed to have had a different screen, not near as good of color and would look bad at an angle, this new one seems perfect thus far.
Good Luck!
I still have until July if I have more problems to get even more Captivates as they told me they will keep sending them and will NOT replace for a different phone.
I'm just curious, when you do this, how long do they give you to send the old phone back?

You use the same shipping box to send it back, prepaid. If I remember correctly it's about a week before they will follow up and then after about two weeks you get charged the full price for a new phone.
The paperwork in my box stated you have 10 days.
They tried to talk refurb, but I had already gotten one of those and it shut down on me 5 times the first morning I had it. I sent that one back with a nasty note. This is definitely a new phone, with orginal packaging. The build date is 12/26/2010 (according to Samsung website) and it's a 1012 revision. I am hopeful...

Comes loaded with JH7. I have no idea what the 3 button download thingy you mention is. I haven't gotten into rooting phones, and etc.
What do you think of this:
I went to a warranty center and had my phone exchanged, only to find out (not until I got home) that the IMEI of the replacement phone also falls within the range of potentially problematic phones.
So, rather than settle for what they gave me, I went back the next day and asked if they had any newer phones or, more specifically, any that weren't in the range of IMEIs that have been identified by Samsung as possibly having the shutdown problem. They didn't, so then I called the 800# and talked to their Android specialist.
The specialist told me that I shouldn't worry about it, since all of the bad phones had been removed from inventory. I found that hard to believe, but was at a loss for what to say, so I ended up doing the master reset and was scheduled to talk to them again to see if that did the trick.
Should I leave it at that and assume he was correct telling me that all of the bad phones had been removed from inventory, or should I force the issue and "demand" a newer phone, so as to avoid possible problems 3, 4 or 5 months down the road (or worse, after the warranty is up)??
Anyone have any first-hand knowledge of whether AT&T took all of the bad-range phones or I'd stock? Anyone been told something similar by AT&T?

I am on my 4th replacement from the warranty department. They have not removed the affected phones from inventory. This 4th phone has it and is going back. I am in the middle of trying to get them to send me a new phone. I had called. they referred me to some specialist and they took my info and are scheduled to get back to me... I hope it all ends well.
Only refurbished phones
Hi,
I talked with android specialist on their warranty dept number, but they are adamant and reiterating that they can only give refurbished phones. My phone is 32 days old. 2 days over their normal 30 days return period
I feel being cheated. Is there a way to do something about it?

Have you tried bringing it back to the AT&T store? They're usually a little lenient about the 30 days.

This phone was purchased from amazonwireless.com. After talking with 3 different reps I was able to convince them to send new replacement phone. But they didn't promise to send me a new phone (IMEI not in defective phone's range). Lets see how it goes with new phone. Else my only option would be to get refurbished phone from AT&T.
Contact the better business bureau, the FTC, and any other complaint site. They actually responded to my BBB complaint - so it may be the best one to go thru.
After my THIRD one I got lucky and when I went to the AT&T store there was a Corp rep there. They didn't believe me at first that the warranty department told me I have to keep getting the same phone, then they called for me. After they found out I wasn't joking I got a replacement...not just a replacement, but a different phone all together (NOT the Captivate). Seems everyone at ATT is well aware that basically this phone has major defects.
Oddly I do know two other people that have one, and they have never had a problem, funny how I had a problem with my original and ALL 3 replacements....Then again, this 3rd Captivate I had when at the att store I found out was actually my original phone shipped back to me again!!! WTF!
Damn, I bought my phone on launch date and not a problem (now that GPS is fixed with custom roms for me )
Looks like those jokers at ATT just cycling defective phones and hoping for customers to just give up on wasting time and stop contacting them.
Thats ATT for you, or any big corporation for that matter.
If it weren't for the custom roms, I would feel similar. Wasn't very impressed after using stock captivate for a while. I'm glad I didn't go through that!

Have her call 877-707-6220 to explain. It's the Executive Level of customer service. I have come to learn that the people in this department can do anything - if you are nice enough to them. And, they are well aware of the shutdown issue.

REPAIR centre delay? UPDATE: device is lost|NEW UNBRANDED REPLACEMENT. ARRIVED!

HTC took my Vodafone branded Sensation to repair it as i had bought it over ebay and cell reception wasn't as good as other sensations.
Whoop de doo UPS came and collected my phone on Tuesday 21st June and HTC received it on Wednesday 22nd June at 10AM. They told me it will take 7 working days to repair.
10 working days later (14 days later) they still havent fixed it and have no updates for me.
Anything i can do?
UPDATE: 13 Working days since it has been in repair. I have escalated this 3 times and checked with them everyday.
I get a call from the Supervisor they Repair Center have lost my Flagship Device.
They have no Sensations in stock. so they are offering me an alternative device (obviously all cheaper than the Sensation)
Now they are looking into trying to issue a replacement Sensation from HTC. very annoyed
Update: Rang up the HTC Care Team today. Because they lost my Vodafone branded device. They have decided to send me a brand new unopened unbranded Sensation. which i would receive in 3 working days also
http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/uk/p_htc_item.aspx?i=185326
a free Bluetooth headset as compensation.
well glad that should be sorted, and will update when i receive it
Update 13/07/11: New device has arrvied from HTC. unbranded and sim free, and this one has a more noticably flat screen than the previous devices.

You can do more. Writing in to head office helps.

I've never seen more forum police/wanna b mods in one forum than here. Keep your panties on boys.
'to the op. tmo did a similar thing with me. Tell you now, be patient and you'll get your sensation. Reason why you need to be patient is if they are out of stock, not much of anything you or they can do to speed it up. tmo lost my sgs n they were out of stock, I had to wait 3 weeks.

I know i think they will know how it feels when it happens to their Devices
I understand the need to be patient. I spoke to a Supervisor and he has escalated a request for HTC to send out a new device not the repair center. as its not the network provider (e.g. Tmo) who took my device. it was HTC themselves.
They have mentioned they will be sending a new Sensation. Brand new and i did ask for a free accessory such as the car kit upgrade or the DLNA wireless box.
just have to wait and see. but yeh at the moment my Desire HD has gone for repair as i broke it. the sensation went for repair under warranty for faulty WIFI. im currently using a blackberry where The LCD is cracked and the bottom half is just a white blank screen. so im not the happiest and can only use the phone for answering calls really

OP that sucks. TMobile offers loaner phones when they have to send one out for warranty repair, does your carrier not do that? Good luck, let us know if you got the flat glass

OP that sucks. TMobile offers loaner phones when they have to send one out for warranty repair, does your carrier not do that? Good luck, let us know if you got the flat glass

Update 13/07/11: New device has arrvied from HTC. unbranded and sim free, and this one has a more noticably flat screen than the previous devices.
yep definitely it feels flat but looks a little curved. much better i think.
Can you elaborate on the flatness of the screen? The screens on these are flat with curved edges. Is that what you mean? The sensation screen isn't entirely curved like the Nexus S.

With my sensation HTC lost. when u get to the edge of the screen on either side you could feel the curve. it was substantially curved. now with the new unbranded device, i can hardly feel the curve on the edge, it feels flat. like just one straight glss, but looking at it, you can see a slight curve on thescreen, only very slight, not as much as the earlier sensations.

UPS/ Replacement phone!

Let me start of by blaming myself for this incident.
I should of checked the package before I signed for it and let the UPS driver go.
Today my replacement was delivered and all I got was an empty box.
Upon delivery I was watching my niece and didn't think twice about it, I grabbed the box signed for it and went to check on her.
Afterwards I went to check out the replacement only to find out the box was tampered with and there was nothing inside.
I immediately called T-Mobile to make them aware of the situation.
They said they will investigate the situation and get back to me.
At this point I'm not sure what's gonna happen, I hope I don't get charged for it, but either way it will be a learning experience for me.
I have read about people going through this just never thought it would happen to me.
Please anyone else getting a replacement phone
** Check your UPS package **
Before you sign for it.
If anyone else had this happen to them I would like to know what happened at the end?
Did you end up paying?
Did you also called UPS?
The Tmo rep told me no, but should I call them anyways?
....
You should call UPS, this happened to me but not with a phone so I called UPS because I received an empty box
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
My idiot UPS guy never lets me open the box until I sign for it. I get alot of big packages, and he doesn't stay and wait for me to open them. I'm afraid something like this will happen to me in the future :L
Anyways... Good luck man. Hope you don't have to pay for the phone.

T-Mobile will definitely issue you another G2x. When they say they are investigating all they are doing is waiting for someone to pop a sim card into the reported stolen phone. They are making sure that you don't have the phone so the minute someone else uses the phone then you will receive a call back.

Yes, they were going to, but I no longer needed it! So I told them not to send me another one.
You see I was stuck on the S/W screen like many so I went ahead and requested a replacement.
The next day I got it running again and I called T-Mobile to cancel the order, but was told it was too late.
They told me to either send replacement back or my original phone.
I have some screen bleed on this one and I was going to see if my replacement was better.
Guess I'll never know now.
....
Sounds fishy. You ordered a replacement, had it stolen, then didn't need another. Lol
Not saying your lying but giving you my 3rd person view.
I did the same thing except I returned the placement. The one I got has nasty screen bleed and by the time I got mine, I already had mine fixed.
Shouldn't be no big thing but who's to say you didn't take the phone, sit on it for a while, then sell it?
Basically be careful with your story so you don't end up eating the cost of the other one.
I had a similar story where they dropped it off at the empty house next door where it sat for a week. I called and reported it stolen but they said it was delivered and I went looking for it. T-Mobile seemed as though they were going to charge me for the replacement until I found it. I told them what happened and had to PAY to send it back.

I agree his story does sound fishy, but you never know. He could be telling the God honest truth. If it was me I would of let them send another phone because T-Mobile keeps notes of everything and they might have him down for suspicious activity.
Also in your case I honestly would of never let T-Mobile know I found the phone next door at an abandoned house. These two stories would raise flags. I'm not calling any of you liars, I'm just looking from the outside in and from where I stand the stories are sort of hard to believe. I hope you guys understand.

Yeah, it does sound fishy, but I'm telling the truth!
Why would I bother lying on here there nothing for me to gain,
I just want to make people aware of my situation so it don't happen to anyone else.
Tmo has everything on record, including when I tried to cancel it!
I could of had them ship me another one, but at this point didn't feel like possibly going through the same thing again.
But it is what it is, I wish I had the handset for resell and this was all made up. Unfortunately it's not, and I just might have to pay for it.
It's a mistake I might have to pay for and definitely learn from.
I just hope Tmo can somehow lock the serial number so that handset can't be used.

I don't think you lying cause like you say what can you possibly gain by lying to us (the people of XDA)? As long as you never put your sim card in the phone of question then you will not be charged at all. T-Mobile won't lock the phone because at the end of the day they still get paid for that phone through insurance and because whoever is using that phone most likely is using it on T-Mobile service so they will continue to get paid one way or the other.

To me this is like your luggage getting stolen at the airlines. I don't understand how the employees get away with it. They can follow packages and luggage every step of the way. How is it that they can't figure out which employees are stealing?

I'm pretty sure they have an idea, but without solid proof they can not even accuse anyone of stealing since its the law. All they would do is probably set them up and hope they take the bait. I would definitely assume its UPS stealing it rather than T-Mobile because they weigh the boxes before they ship and I would think UPS would question why the package weighs the same as an empty box and possibly take note of it since they are partnering with a major company (T-Mobile).

ha yeah I had this problem. 4 times in a freakn row I had this problem - yes that's right I got 4 empty boxes delivered from UPS. I jacked around with them for 2 months about this as matter of fact. My end result was the 5th time there was actually a damn phone in the box - however the whole thing (among many other problems) pissed me off so bad I canceled my contract. My theory is that someone at one of the UPS hubs was stealing the phones. Talked to several people at UPS about it and probably 25+ people at t-mobile about it.
In my case, after the 1st empty box, I had a friend make a video of the UPS guy handing me the box, and then me opening an empty box so there was no "you lie" excuse from t-mobile. The phones were being delivered to my office via a UPS driver we see 3 times a day here (we do lot of biz with them) - so either t-mobile was sending empty boxes or some UPS employee was ripping them off.

Honestly when you're watching a 3 yr. old little girl and shes running around the last thing you're worried about is the weight of the box.
Like I said I blame myself for not paying more attention, but when it's never happened to you and you've had several replacements delivered you don't think nothing of it.

Not that you said it, but just for the record it can also be the package handler (the person who loads the truck) stealing it instead of the driver. I had a friend who used to work as a package handler and his thieving ass would steal the phones until one day he was caught.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I'm in charge of the shipping department for a well known retailer and we have issues more than I would care for with UPS. What usually happens is somewhere in their hub someone cuts opens the box, opens the box the product is in, steals the item, puts the empty product box back in the shipping box, and then tapes the box up. Nobody finds out until it reaches the destination.
I hope that perhaps T-Mobile messed up and that you can get your replacement phone quickly.

When I had my Vibrant replacements they would just leave them by the door and now with the G2X Ive had to sign for both replacements.
I guess it depends on driver.

The op story sounds more legit than the kid who received four empty boxes and did not check any of them or make better plans for shipping after the first three turned up empty. At least the op is aware.

Verizon's headache of customer service...

Restored my phone to stock two days ago and updated from Froyo to Gingerbread. Official HTC/Verizon update. Guess what? Broke my internet (in the best way to say it.) I had flaky 3G connection and no 4G at all. Most of the time, it would be at 1X or no data connectivity at all.
Went through all the steps of soft resets, pulling battery, factory resetting, toggling mobile network state, toggling data connectivity, toggling roaming, toggling between CDMA only and CDMA/LTE. You name it (in the range of things that didn't void warranty) and I did it. Nothing.
So I call customer service, and the woman said that she WOULD send out a SIM card, but it'd be faster for me to go to the Verizon store and they'd replace it for free, no hassle. So, went down to the store (It's only about five minutes from my home) got it switched out, bam. Had 3G, that was it. The rep was pretty busy and wanted to rush me out, so he said "It's fine, just give it ten minutes. Thanks for coming by." Twenty minutes later, sitting in my room and notice that...oh darn, no internet connectivity at all. Went through all the basic steps again, and nothing.
By this point, raging.
Call their tech support and they say that they're sending me a new thunderbolt (yay!) So, yesterday it came in (after I had to call Fed Ex and correct my address because the woman completely got it wrong lol) Unbox it, put in my SIM and SD cards and my battery, start it up. Worked just fine. Praise Jeebus! Left it that way for the rest of the night because I didn't need to use my phone, but when I made a call this morning, I realized that my phone speaker was making a grinding metallic buzzing like noise...
Great.
So I call in, and the techie I talked to told me to call Asurion since it was a CLNR (Made me mad since they said it'd be a brand new phone) and they told me I'd have to pay a deductible! So I hung up and called Verizon back (still using a rather polite tone after all the bull****) and quickly gave them the whole story and informed them of how Asurion wanted me to pay $100 for a new phone because the phone I had JUST gotten was broken and was shipped that way. They apologized, said they didn't know why Asurion would do that, and said I should have another Thunderbolt on my doorstep tomorrow.
If this one is busted as well, I'm going to throw away Mr. Nice Guy and raise hell. I've been with Verizon for almost four years now and they just keep giving me the runaround. This is absurd. Not the first time some crap like this has happened because of a malfunctioning phone.
Whenever you call VZW, you should ALWAYS choose the "cancel account" option at the teleprompt. It will automatically escalate your call to a high level tech who actually knows his/her **** and is authorized to make more changes than the low level peons.
If there's something wrong with the one they send me tomorrow, I'm calling them right off the bat and asking to be transferred to their retention department lol. Same thing, I guess. I'm going to rage and tell them give me a NEW phone. Not dealing with another broken refurbished phone. Some warranty THAT is.
What makes me even more mad is the fact that they sent me to Asurion when I found out that Asurion no longer handles ANY of the warranty issues. So they knew I'd be charged to pay for a new phone because THEY screwed up.
I had the exact same thing happen...no 4g. They sent me a new SIM, nothing. Sent me a new phone, buzzing in the earpiece. Only difference was that I happened to notice it right away when I was testing the phone. Called them back and they just sent me another replacement phone, no questions. Never had to go through Asurion because it was broken when I got it. Weird that they made you do that. Second new (refurb) phone I got worked great and 4G is back.
The Thunderbolt I got today was a brick. Seriously? lol. I called Verizon to cancel my account due to all the bullsh*t and the supervisor said she'd send me a brand new Rezound instead of a CLNR Thunderbolt. Well, nice knowing the Tbolt and everyone on the forum. Best of luck to all the devs, I hope Twistd gets ICS up and running for you guys
I've been with VZW for 12 years, no bad experiences...wish they'd send me a Rezound!
It doesn't seem like Verizon had bad customer service. You got a lemon of a phone.
They're sending you a brand new Rezound. Doesn't sound like bad customer service to me.

OP...So YOU broke your phone (voided warranty, Verizon needs not offer any assistance in fixing it). Then blame them for the software issue you created? To top if off you get a "free" upgrade from Verizon (refurbished of course), and then are surprised that it is not of the highest quality. Sounds like you need to jump back in to reality, as well as take responsibility for your own actions before "raging" against others for them. You should be jumping for joy that you got a new phone, not crying about it.
I have had to deal with all major cell phone vendors as part of my job. I can tell you without any question what so ever that Verizon has by FAR the best customer service of all cell phone vendors.

He was very patient and calm until the 4th time he was wronged by either broken phone/software in which case i believe was not his fault, then he raged, tbh some people would have already raged way before this guy did. Also i dont think he meant verizon is bad at customer service but he was frustated after getting like 3 diff. broken phones which is also not his fault. Just my 2 cents

Ha. Ha ha ha. I had forgotten I posted here, actually.
A software issue I created? No. I don't call returning to their stock image then updating to THEIR update MY issue. The rep I spoke with said that it wasn't an unknown issue. No, I only got a "free" upgrade after they sent me a phone with a broken ear speaker and one that didn't even turn off.
I'd be glad about the new phones if they weren't junked as well. My first Rezound pretty much burned out, and the new one has a yellow tinted screen with pink soft keys instead of red and horrible light leakage.
I understand where you'd be coming from if I had said "wahwahwah" about it all.
But Jesus, you can't tell me if you had gotten two bad phones in a row you wouldn't be raging. And now I've gotten two more that were junk.
Please, tell me more about how I have to jump into reality.

Sense of entitlement? Right.
Yeah, they care so much that one of them sent me to Asurion when it was clearly a warranty issue with the first refurbished that I got. Not to mention the woman that told me she had written a few notes on my system to aid in the process after all of it to get the Rezound...when she never did. The next rep I spoke with had no clue what I was talking about. So, once again, sense of entitlement? Please. Do elaborate after you understand that their software update broke my radio connection, the second phone I got was busted, the third was busted, the first Rezound burned out after a week, and the new Rezound has horrible build quality issues.
Might want to actually read my first post before you try to act like I'm being a "Waaaaaaaaah gimme new phone because I had one issue!"
Out of maybe 12 times I've had to call Verizon due to busted phones, I've had 2-3 that I would actually rate as satisfactory. The others certainly weren't pleasant. I know the busted phones are completely HTC's fault (at the time of the original post, I thought it was Verizon who certified the devices. Yes, ignorance on my part), but that doesn't excuse how many times I've pretty much gotten very cold and bitter treatment.
Is there a point to this thread? If not, mods please close.

I think he himself caused a mismatch in radios. I don't believe that a factory reset that takes you back to Froyo replaces the radios with Froyo compatible radios. In any case it sounds like a case of rooted incompatible radios that was causing his issues.

I understand the OP's frustrations. I have been with Verizon for 6 years now after my company was bought out by them. I could have went somewhere else at that point but I stayed for the sake of the reputation I had known Verizon to have among others I knew.
I went through a point of time where 2 of us on the plan had bad phones, known issues etc. They shipped out warranty replacements and they didn't work right either etc. I have had good customer service from them before, but I think its really just the luck of the draw with them. We went through 12 different shipments before they finally decided to send us phones that worked. This was not the fault of any screwing with the phone's technology, this was stock.
In Verizon's defense, this will always be an issue. Companies with high customer service ratings will always have at least 1-2 peons that don't care working for them. And it may just be the luck to get that 1 peon on the phone at the time....
Don't give up on a company because of one bad situation if you have many others to look at as good. They are a good company (for the most part) with some bad seeds...it happens to most if not all.
Glad to see your phone was taken care of!!!

At&t warranty replacement discussion thread

I've created this thread so anyone (like me) that has gotten a warranty replacement for there hox through at&t can discuss there experiences with them good or bad, as well as what software it came with and things of that nature.
with that being said, i myself am waiting on my third replacement from them as of now. the first being sent back because of frequent signal loss and a (what sounded like) a blown speaker phone. the second one i have now is going back because the colors are darker than the should be and the whites are horrible looking tan and kind of pinkish on different screen. only fix was to turn the brightness all the way up and kill my battery faster than i should have to. also, as of now, both replacements have came with 2.20 installed on them. maybe three times a charm on a decent replacement as well as a different software version. if anything i can live with 2.20 as long as the phone lives up to the $150 i paid the first time.
reserved for update when replacement arrives. replacement has arrived and ive posted a reply in the thread about it instead of here.
I got my first One X on 9/10 as a refurb with 1.85. I had a GS II and received a replacement with issues followed by 2 DOA replacements, so they gave me a One X (long story involving over a month of calls and "troubleshooting" ). It was a full kit with charger and SIM, and whoever put the SIM in mangled the hole for the tool. It also has some sort of crack or blemish in the screen under the glass. It looks like stuck pixels, but it changes color by angle. I got a replacement on 9/17 with 2.20 installed. The screen was already scratched, and the screen protector had been removed and reapplied crooked and bubbly. I sent that one back and am still using the first one so I can root. I'll try again for a replacement in a few weeks if I can't get used to this screen issue or if 2.20 is rooted. Or I may just take the offer for early upgrade and discounted GS III.

I was going to thread crap, but what the hell..
My refurb replacement was cosmetically perfect, but the volume rocker is a tiny bit loose, and I get some creaks from the screen, but I only notice them when I'm cleaning it, wiping it down. I'm not enough of douche to complain about these things.
[Reserved for snarky thread crap comment in.near future]
I'm not really a proponent of calling people out, but I seriously question peoples' OCD when it comes to these stories of "this is my 9th replacement device" and so on. (edit: didn't necessarily mean the previous sentence to apply to anyone in this thread; I just know how these replacement complaints can go) If you convince yourself enough times that you have a hardware or software issue, that issue will begin to appear. It's called FEAR. False Evidence Appearing Real. Been there, done that with a Blackberry and I'm not going down that road ever again. It's simply not worth the anxiety.
I've had one issue with this phone and it had to do with the SIM card error. It could have been the card, could have been the phone, but since I was within my 30 days the rep just exchanged it out to be certain.
this thread is for good or bad discussion on your replacement. and if your calling someone a douche for complaining or not on here then remove your post, cause as much as you would like to not believe it you just complained in your own way the things you obviously dislike about your replacement. and i reserved a spot for hopefully nothing but good things to say about my coming replacement. its thread trolls like you that keep people from xda anymore. its you dont like a thread go read a different one, i didnt make you spend time coming to mine or reading through it.
Mine is solid so far, got it yesterday... only problem is that it came with 2.20

Easy there, defensive.
I was pointing out how some people get with these replacements. I thought I made that clear when I outlined my experience. I hope you get a good phone!

You want to flip out at the warranty dept and demand the customer retention dept. They are the people that can make it all happen. I had an atrix that was having issues. After my 3rd replacement the gave me a 250$ credit, let me upgrade early and I was able to keep the atrix and sell it.

thanks i'll keep that in mind. but i pretty much guess i wont have any problems with this one. it'll be crazy to get three bad replacements, but i guess it could happen. they are refurbished

If you have a certain amount of faulty devices they will usually ask if you want to switch to a different model (they give you a couple of options).

Here is my full story of how I went from the Galaxy S II to the One X for free.
On 8/15 I called AT&T about my Galaxy S II with an issue. They were back ordered so I was offered a Skyrocket. The Skyrocket is slow, sluggish, and poor battery compared to the Galaxy S II, so I refused and called a service center daily until they had one. That one had a different issue. I called and politely asked for a different phone. After talking to retention, warranty, and resolution I was denied everywhere (resolution offered early upgrade, but not until October, an offer I may still take them up on). They had the Galaxy S II back in stock so they sent me one of those. It came with screen burn in and black splotches on the screen, so they sent me another one, and it was the same. All the phones had date codes in 8/2011. At that point they wanted to troubleshoot the second one some more. It was randomly shutting down, and they had me try factory resets, new battery (they actually sent 2) and a new SIM. After a month of calling several times a week, I was finally offered the One X. I would have taken anything that wasn't the Skyrocket. I was actually hoping for Atrix HD because I wanted dedicated HDMI and MicroSD. But, I wasn't given options, just a One X or try another Galaxy S II. I have worked in a call center long enough to know being nice is far more effective at getting what you want vs yelling. I received a refurb with charger, and I had to send back my Galaxy S II. But, my contract was not extended so I still qualify in May 2013.
I haven't decided yet if I want to get a GS III in October, or wait for the GS IV next year. Either way my wife will probably get this One X to replace her iPhone 4 (she qualifies in July 2013).

well, i got my new one x today. gotta say i love it like my first one. ive got all my stuff on it, set it up how i wanted, and tested everything. its my third replacement because the last two had problems. its perfect and now im just waiting for root to come to 2.20 because it seems every phone at&t is sending out it updated to 2.20 before shipping. i think they do this because of the new root patching it does. well anyways, i got it and i love it!! goodtimes!!!!
I had issues with my backlight becoming intermittent. It would go out and required flexing the phone to get it back on. It was probably a loose connection on the backlight. I was running a custom Rom with super CID. The techs at the store and the repair center failed to notice. It shouldn't have made a difference anyway because the problem was hardware. I had a launch HT23 and received a HT25 refurbished replacement with 2.20 installed.

well here is my story
my hox came with 2.20 i got the phone 2weeks ago exactly. i found out while in the store that they are manually updating the phones to 2.20 i thought to myself ok thats odd. then i later found out no root for 2.20 as of yet. so i started having issues with wifi dropping off for no reason then it would come back. that didn't brother me to badly until i started to experience a very odd issue with the back button would say 40% of the time it would turn on the vibrate function n wouldn't turn off until i hit the back button again that got me pissed 2 weeks old n i have to deal with this i ended go back to the store they told me nothing they could do nothing for me except to return the phone n refund me the money i spent minus restocking fee i got pissed and walked out. i got a hold of customer service because i am a business customer they bent over backwards and sent me a NEW one i informed them i know of the issues with the refurbs my friends have been thru this so she and her supervisor allowed it to send me a brand new White one but here is the kicker they told me to keep my Current one X i thought that was odd so i call back they also informed me to keep it so i guess ill find out what software version i get and also if i have to send this one back at some point if an audit catches it and then i will complain more..lol
My Interesting story for the day
What did say to get them to send you a new replacement? I'm also a business customer, though not the owner of the account. Just curious how you played that angle. I'm debating whether to get my phone replaced, but have concerns about refurbished units, many of which confirmed in this thread. Thanks.

i think its because my phone is only 2 weeks old and i told them i would not accept a refurb unit due to issues i have read here and my friends have experienced i am also not the owner on the account but i am an authorized user its all how u talk to them dont demand anything kill them with kindness and talk to them as a human being and joke around with them n tell them u have already reset ur phone 2 twice and the problem still is there and blame the 2.20 update for causing software glitches and there are known hardware problems also the rep was nice enough to tell me that there was a recent bulletin about wifi and software issues related to the 2.20 update. also try to call back at a later time to get another rep and also remember this if you cannot make head way with 1 rep try again if the second one cant make it happen call back again n talk to a supervisor and inform them u know about issues with refurb one x's having issues.
Thanks for the info.
My phone has shut itself off overnight a couple of times in the past few weeks. Seemingly randomly. If it happens again, I'll give your idea a shot.
