Hi,
Not quite sure when this happened, but my front camera no longer works. Rear camera fine, but when I switch to front camera in the camera app (or any other), I just get a freeze for a few moments and the viewer just shows black.
Based on what I've read in other posts I've tried deleting the camera cache data, and also doing a hard reset (though I'm not sure I did that correctly).
Transformer is a B40 running Stock Rom 8.6.5.21-20111216, ADWLauncher.
Can anyone help? Has anyone experienced this before? Might be helpful if someone could post a step-by-step to the hard reset thing as I can sometimes be a bit dense about stuff like that!
Cheers

Hello all,
I'm hoping someone an help with this.
I have already asked a few people, but no-one has been able to solve it just yet. I have faith though.
No matter which ROM I use (was using Vegan initially, then tried TnT Lite and even the stock TnT) when I try to use the camera it seems to "crash". The app loads, and I can interact with the app, but the camera screen seems to crash (colored lines for a split second, then nothing) then goes black. I can still change settings in the camera (such as change to video etc) but the camera screen is just black. When I click the shutter button to take picture, the picture appears at the top right in the little box but is just a green square.
Anyone any ideas?
Does it sound like a software issue? Or hardware?
I'm really hoping software as I don't want my tab to be broken.
I have not tried an nvflash yet, but probably going to do that tonight and fully reset it. Might that help?
Thanks in advance!
Mine was doing something like this. I found out with mine that when I opened the case, the camera had popped out of it's spot and wasn't pointing out the keyhole.
Hi, I'm having an issue with my Nexus 5 which is that the front and back cameras as well as the back LED no longer seem to function. This happens in the stock Camera app where as soon as it is opened, an 'Unfortunately, Camera has stopped.' message comes up and blackness is shown. This also happens in third party apps such as Snapchat where the message 'Snapchat was unable to open the camera. You may need to restart your device ' comes up. In addition, upon attempting to use Tesla LED, the back facing LED does not turn on.
The likely cause that I can see is the recent screen replacement that took place. I ordered this[1] online which came with a new set of cameras as well as a new screen. I took the motherboard, battery and rear case from the old phone and attached them to the new set of cameras and the new screen.
After performing the replacement, everything else worked except the cameras and the LED.
Upon seeing the issue, I tried swapping out the new rear facing camera (that came with the screen replacement) for the old rear facing camera that was in the old phone (the camera still worked before the replacement). After swapping the rear camera the issue was unchanged.
I have tried the following in terms of software fixes:
-Other camera applications - they crash or are black
-Clear cache and application data for the stock camera app - no effect
-Change to ART - no effect
I would greatly appreciate any help or advice that you can offer.
I'd reinstall stock rom and gapps, if they still don't work you know it's a hardware problem for sure. Then troubleshoot from there.

I factory reset the device and tried the default Google Apps, still having the same issues.
Any suggestions for hardware trouble shooting?

As for hardware trouble shooting, being that you know the original cameras worked, all you can do is check the connections . I'd unplug them and plug them back in.
I'd also try flashing the 4.4 stock camera zip and see if that works.

I tried reattaching all of the physical connections and that did not seem to make a difference.
In regards to flashing the 4.4 stock camera zip, would you be able to give me a little guidance as to how that process would occur?
Thanks so much for your help so far.
You'd need to root, install a custom recovery (twrp), use titanium backup to uninstall camera. Then boot into your custom recovery and install the camera zip.

Sorry for such a long response time.
I updated the phone to 4.4.3.
Interestingly the back facing camera appears to have started working. The default camera application still fails to open, but when I use another application (Snapchat) and have it set to try the backfacing camera first, everything seems to work ok. However, when I switch to front facing the application says that it can't find the camera.
In addition, the back facing LED has begun to work again as well.
Previously, I had switched out the new rear facing camera (that came with the casing) for the old rear facing camera hoping that it might changes things. I recognize retrospectively that my method of testing was flawed as it seems as though regardless of whether one of the cameras is/was working the application would not open.
Hoping that the replacement of the rear facing had caused it to start working, I swapped out the new front facing camera for the old one. Upon testing, the issues with the front facing camera seem to persist.
At this point I'm not sure how to proceed. The lack of functionality of both front facing cameras (the old and the new) would seem to suggest an issue with the connector on the motherboard if the problem were hardware based. I'm not sure, though, if the problem could somehow be in software.
One software phenomenon that I observed is that as soon as I try to use the front facing camera, the back facing camera stops working again requiring the application to be reset. This occurrence has led me to question the causation between the update and the new functionality. It is possible that in my testing of the device before the update, I had simply been opening the front facing camera and upon seeing it fail, and trying the back facing camera and seeing it fail (because I had tried the front facing camera), that I assumed it was not working.
If you have any recommendations on how to proceed I would greatly appreciate hearing them. If not then thanks for all your help.

Any updates mate? Did you made it work ?
I opened my nexus to fix the gps. Everything worked fine, until suddenly gps stopped working. I opened again, remove the fix, still the same.
Then my camera stopped working as well. "Cannot connect to camera" or something like this it gave me.
I've updated from 4.4.4 kitkat to android L latest build, and gps works but the camera app crashes, as well as any other camera on market ( either black screen or crash ).
Any help for me ?
Any answer it will be appreciated.
Same exact issue with front facing camera after glass replacement. Anybody find a fix yet?
First off, I have not seen this anywhere else, but appologies if i've missed it!
Even on a completely clean install of the M preview, upon opening camera, and once passed the 'OK, GOT IT' button, camera closes. Every time. Regardless of what i do, clear cache, update, remove updates etc. Happens on Preview 1 and 2. Doesnt happen in 5.0/5.1/5.1.1. I thought it might be the fact the camera was damaged being reported in some new way to the system, forcing the closure (i ripped the cable slightly when repairing another part (i know, dumb, but i slipped)), but have since replaced with a new part and still have issues.
Has anyone else had this, and fixed it? Thanks!
Hello, I have the same problem. Unfortunately, my problem persists on older versions of android. My problem seems to be the front facing camera, because with a third party app, the rear camera works. I replaced the front camera, but it still does not work in any app, and the Camera app still does not start. Tried removing the front camera - app again stops working.
That is the same for me. Snapchat will use the rear camera fine, but doesn't register the phone as even having a front camera

Same here! I can take photos through Tinder, and download them to my phone (although sometimes the Tinder app will crash too). But whenever I open the Camera app I get the "Unfortunately, Camera has stopped" message. I've tried multiple reboots, closing the app, not closing the app, resetting the cache, etc. Nothing works.
I believe this all started when I tried to take a "selfie" one time (I guess that's God's way of telling me never to do that again). When I switched to the front camera all hell broke loose. Now I'm guessing it's "stuck" on the front camera and I can't run the app even to switch it back!
I've searched here and on other forums but can't find an answer to some camera related problems.
I'm using 15.1 Osprey June, 1st build on my Moto G3 2Gb Ram (XT1543).
PROBLEM 1: front camera not working.
This is happening for a long time, since I was using stock ROM (my phone came with 6.0, but that time both camera worked fine).
Don't know when this starts, cause i didn't use front camera very often, but when on 6.1 this already happened, the change camera icon simply disappeared.
I've tried all tricks, format the phone, boot on safe mode, clear chaces, etc.
I've used Lineage 14 for a while and now I've made a clean install of 15.1 and same thing.
Back camera works fine for photo and video using Footej Camera — the first time I opened this app, there was the change camera icon; I clicked and get that camera error message, and now the icon disappeared again. Installed MotoCamera_Mod_6.2.5.16 and same thing: back camera fully functional, front camera no icon or options.
Didn't drop my phone, but i'm considering some hardware problem.
Anyone has a link to a DIY fix (or at least try)?
Here in my country, the cost of the repair probably does not pay...
PROBLEM 2: Instagram stories not working
photos works fine, a click the button and can add to my story, but when I record video, after it's finished the buttons doesn't appear and the app freezes.
on "hands free" the image freezes during record, when try to make a boomerang "an error occurs" message appears and the **** goes like this...
I've removed and install back the app, have the last update, etc.
Is someone else having this problem?
thanks!
problem solved!
if someone else is having similar problems, here's the (obvious) solution:
just do a clean flash!
I did it and everything is working now (instagram stories, other camera apps functions and GPS).
except the front camera, probably due to some hardware stuff.
I'm facing an issue with my camera which I couldn't find anything about via a web search. So I would like to know if anyone experienced something similar?
I'm running the stock rom and didn't tinker with the phone.
Since yesterday my rear camera is really slow an only slowing blurred images. The whole phone seems to be running really slow and unable to handle the data. Switching to the front camera takes ages but once it's active it's working normally.
If I try to use the camera several times I end up with a black preview image. A reboot returns the camera to the previous laggy state.
Changing to a different camera app yields the same behavior. Could be an issue with the latest patch for Android 12 I i installed around the same time or my hardware is fried...

I would try a system reset if possible, I know its a pain but if it works problem solved, You could also try going back to a different build via android flash tool , just a couple of ideas although extreme ,would narrow it down even more to a hardware issue over corrupt software. Hth

I feared that I would have to do this. Factory reset and flashing an older version didn't help.
Now I can hear that something is moving inside when I shake the phone. Time to crack it open and have a look.
Thanks for the suggestions.
