Browsing Books - Kindle Fire Themes and Apps

Hi guys,
So here's the deal. I have GO Launcher EX installed on my kindle fire and I have set up everything to where I want it to be now. I got calibre and transferred my books into the KF.
Now on the Launcher's main page, I'm trying to open up the "Amazon Kindle" app to read my books but the only way to make this work is to open up the old launcher and open the book. Then, with it open that is the only way I can have the Amazon Kindle app to do anything at all. If I do not open the book beforehand, the app does nothing when I select it.
My question is. Is there a way to browse my collection of books on the GO Launcher itself or a different app for it?

Probably not the most elegant solution...but on my wifes KF, she prefered the GO Launcher interface to the original KF one so we downloaded the Kindle app for Android from the market, installed it, logged into our Amazon account and checked our registered devices for the market version (the KF also still shows as a registered device and the market app shows below that in the 'Registered Kindle Reading Apps' section) and now when she purchases a book she has it sent to the Kindle for Android app on her KF instead of the KF device itself.
I don't know how the market app compares to the KF native app but she's happy so I am too (at least for now).

I have had issues as well. Rooted and using ADW, the Kindle app would do nothing when pressed. After a while, it just starts to work but only opens the current book I am reading. Have to go back to the original launcher to see all the books. Strange.

Missing Market Apps

Hi all, I have read a lot about missing apps in the market, but it seams to me that there is an unusually high number missing from my rooted Kindle....
Could someone please confirm if the following apps are also missing from their market?
Be Weather
Weather Bug
Go Launcher EX
Dolphin Browser HD
Weight Watchers Mobile (the official app)
I see themes for a lot of these, but not the main apps.
Also, I tried the fix.apk file that I have used on my phone, but it didn't get me what I was hoping for. Thanks
Don't have a fire yet, but can confirm from a few other places that these were removed from the Amazon marketplace for the Fire. You can still sideload them though. Seems this was done a few days ago once everyone started posting that this was a way to get rid of the carousel.
I noticed that, too. There's obviously some sort of filtering going on.

Not on mine either. Perhaps since the Fire isn't one the "compatible" list they are not even available to download.

Thanks everyone sounds like the market is also very limited.

i have go launcher ex and dolphin hd running right now. I did sideload them, i just did it when i was sideloading all the google apps and such. You might do some apk searches on the web. Otherwise it may take a couple weeks for them to be available for the fire (widgetlocker has already updated for the fire, for example).
The Android Market does not contain all of the available apps. It only contains apps that are compatible for your device. So if you have a Kindle Fire it will only show you apps they are compatible with the KFire. That does not mean that you cannot sideload those apps from the Internet.
But, not all sideloaded apps work though.

When I first got my Kindle, I was able to download Go Launcher Ex from the App Store, then when I had a friend get it, it was gone. Ended up sideloading it, but yes, there appears to be a filter.
It really would be quite awesome if there was a way to override this filtering in the android market for those that are rooted. I would love to take my chances.
Google Voice App Receives, but no way to send texts
I read through all FOUR pages of the Kindle Fire forum but did not see anything about this.
I have successfully installed (side loaded) Google Market and Maps on a rooted Fire. I also installed Google Voice (all apk's from my EVO).
GV runs and displays incoming texts, but there is no way to write or send a text. When you click on a text conversation, it opens but there is no text box to write in.
Clicking menu does not give a "compose" option.
Since GV sends texts over the Internet, I am puzzled why this does not work.
I downloaded another texting app and that one does work, but it gives you yet another "phone" number, which just confuses my contacts (they dont know who is texting them).
Anyone got GV working?

Log into your Kindle Fire, Kindle App, and MP3 App as different users

Ok, I understand this probably doesn't pertain to many other Fire users, but maybe it can help a few of you in the same situation as me.
I have my own Amazon account, but my wife and I share kindle and mp3 since buying books and music twice is just dumb. On our phones this is fine because each app allows you to log in as anyone you want. The Kindle Fire combines log ins for all Amazon services, and even puts your name up in the corner. This sucks because I would rather use Joe's Kindle, not Heidi's, and I shop Amazon a lot, but we use my Wife's accounts for books and music. So I was having to live without my music while having my wife lend me books over and over, which then stopped them from being available on my phone... I know, first world problems. Anyway, after rooting (not necessary for this, though, you can just side load) I noticed there was an update in the Android Market for the Kindle app, which I instinctively downloaded. It allowed me to install it over the system app and log in as my wife, without affecting the rest of the accounts on my Fire. Only down side is I no longer have access to the books tab (its empty), and have to use an alternate launcher to use the kindle app now since it doesn't show up in the native app list. Oh well.
After that worked, I decided to try it with the mp3 app, which I pulled from my phone and side loaded, since the one on my Fire didn't show as needing an update in the market. This time, the native tab didn't go dead at least.

Edit: After a reboot the music tab works again, updated post.
I have been working on this for a while and just figured out that if you rename the system app com.amazon.dcp.apk to com.amazon.dcp.apk.bak it will essentially seperate the amazon apps from the device allowing different logins for the apps.
Edit: Here's a link for anyone not familiar with renaming apps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385301
Sounds good, my mp3 player app reverted back to linked after a second reboot. Just one question, does this kill the tabs in the native launcher? No big deal if it does since I've switched to ADW, just curious. Probably going to reroot my Fire tomorrow and use your suggestion, and disable the Amazon Appstore redirect, too.

I just checked and all the tabs seem to be working fine.
Ok, that works, but it stops you from registering your Kindle. Don't know exactly what that means, but it's a little concerning since I dropped $45 on the warranty. Does yours just say "My Kindle" in the corner? I tried registering it in settings and it won't go through. Oh well. Think I'm just going to copy all the music over to my account.

Unfortunately I bought mine used and have been having trouble trying to get it registered so mine has always just been "My kindle", that was my driving force behind trying to figure this out. Sorry I was unaware of that issue.

Rooted and eBooks not showing on Kindle app?

Just rooted my Kindle Fire and installed google apps and go launcher all using the Kindle Fire Utility. Everything is running fine but I am having trouble getting my ebooks that I upload from my computer to show up on my Kindle. They showed up before I rooted in the 'Books' section but now I can't access them even though they're on there.
I've tried quite a few different methods and i can't get ebooks to show up in the stock launcher with my Fire rooted. I just use the Kindle app from the Market with Go Launcher and place the books in the kindle folder.
Thanks, installing from the market and moving the ebooks to the kindle folder worked perfectly.

Try putting them in the sdcard/kindle folder and ONLY place the .mobi file (the book file) into this folder. Then reboot and open the kindle app and enjoy your books. You are welcome in advance.

How to remove installed app from market

I am rooted and familiar somewhat with TB . I have a hide my text app from the market which works well and even hides the icon, but it still shows up under the market as installed. I tried destroying market link but no luck.
Anyone know what I can do here?

Try uninstalling it via the Play Store instead of doing it directly via the phone.

I don't really understand exactly what you're trying to do, but what I think you're saying is that even though you've uninstalled the app it's still showing that you have installed it in the past, so you want to remove your history of having installed it?
Try going to the Play Store, then click the upper left icon to bring up the side view, then go to 'My apps.' Once there to to the 'all' tab and search for the app you want removed from your installation history and press the x on the right side.
Thanks guys... But sorry I wasn't clear. I want to keep the app, it was free, but not have it show up on the play store as being installed

I think I did what you said in your original post. If you go into Titanium Backup and then click on the app you want to hide, then go to the special features tab, then under "play store/market" click detach from market. The first time I tried it it actually didn't work... So I tried rebooting the phone and it still showed up, however, after going back to Titanium backup and toggling between attach and detaching from the play store/market it seemed to work. Try messing around with it a little more and see if it works.
EDIT: My mistake, it still is showing up in the all tab of google play, but not the installed tab... I'll keep messing with it.
Alright, guys (@Jaeryl, @Josh McGrath), here's my recommendation.
Instead of using Titanium, try copying the actual .apk of the text editor app from /data/app to the external sdcard. Then, go into Google Play on your PC and completely delete that text editing app. Refresh your device so that the app is also removed from there.
All you have to do now is go back to where you copied the .apk, install it, and voilá - your app is effectively eliminated from the Play Store, but is also still installed, just like you wanted.

I was actually about to suggest this... if you can't figure out how to do is you can always uninstall the app then just download an apk of the app online. I read that if you install it as an apk it won't be associated with the play store and thus won't show up.

That's exactly right.
See, Google Play can't and doesn't detect every app on your system, just the ones that came from the store itself that are being synced to all your devices. Think about it this way - a Nook Touch device uses the Barnes and Noble bookstore, and when you buy a book from the bookstore, B&N remembers it anr syncs it to all of the devices hooked up to your account.
However, if you download a PDF or ePub book from the Internet and sideload it onto your Nook, B&N doesn't know or care about it - all they care about is the products you purchase from them. And this means that that sideloaded book will not appear on your B&N account, nor will it be synced to your other devices.
Hopefully that little analogy helps you understand it a bit better.

From Google Play store, tap and hold on the app you seeing as installed, you will see remove or delete option there. Remove it, so you would never see that app again in installed list.

COMPLETELY 'GOOGLE-IZE' YOUR AMAZON FIRE TAB (Confirmed Working)

Hello there folks, my name is James Hamilton, and I am from Trinidad and Tobago. I have been the owner of an Amazon Fire Tab HD8 (5th Generation) for the past year and a half, and many times I used to be pissed off with the fact that my 'Tablet' did have the Google Play Store, and apps like Facebook and Twitter never updated to the most recent one because of Amazon's backward behavior.
It wasn't until I stumbled across a video on YouTube that allows you to operate your Fire without the use of an Amazon account. Not only did this save you from the restrictions of having to go to Amazon's Appstore, but it disabled the ads on your lock screen too! So, with these experimental hands of mine, a wild imagination and much tinkering around, I managed to get my Amazon Fire Tab to look and act like a normal Android Tablet, and if I haven't bored you with this (somewhat) lengthy introduction, I'd like to show you how to do the same with yours.
Now, I am a nice person, and I would have liked to post links with these little goodies, but seeing that I am new to the page, I can't post external links... SMH!
DISCLAIMER:
I have tried this on my own, and it did work. If, however, you manage to corrupt your device, or something happens, causing it to go loco, I will not be held responsible for any damages caused.
Now that that's out of the way, let's 'Google-ize' your Amazon Fire Tablet.
THINGS YOU WILL NEED.
. Of course, your fully charged Amazon Fire Tab. (Could be any one from any generation...)
. A back up copy of your data on your Fire tab. (You will need this!)
. A fully functional WiFi network.
. Google Installer (apk file) on your memory card. This will download and install the latest version of Google Apps for your device.
Get it here...
---- You can also use RootJunky's Supertool to install the Google Play Store, but I will be using the Google Installer.
. Launcher Hijack (apk file) on your memory card.
. Google Now Launcher (apk file). This is optional, in the sense that you can download it from the Google Play Store after. Your choice!
Get it here...
Now let's do this!
STEP 1: FACTORY RESET YOUR FIRE TAB.
You can either do a hard or a soft reset on your tab. The following video gives a full demonstration on how to successfully reset your tab...
This is also the reason why a back up of your data is required, because, by doing this, you will be kissing your personal accounts and data... GOODBYE!!!
Note: Your Fire Tab will take a pretty long while before it starts back up, so please, be patient with this!
STEP 2: LOG INTO THE TAB WITHOUT AN AMAZON ACCOUNT.
By doing this, you'll be disabling system offers and killing (most of) Amazon's functionality on this tablet to the core. This here requires special attention and detail. You may have to go into a wifi network, and come back out to get that 'NOT NOW' option, but whatever you do, DO NOT SIGN INTO A WIFI NETWORK, or else you may have to start over from step 1. The following YouTube video gives a demo on how to do this successfully.
STEP 3: SET YOUR FIRE TO INSTALL REQUIRED APPS.
Go to 'Settings', then into 'Security'. Tap on the 'Apps from Unknown Sources' option, tap OK on the pop-up window, and you're all set to install exterior apps.
STEP 4: INSTALLING GOOGLE APPS.
NOW, you can sign into your WiFi Network... (You know you wanted to... lol)
Using the Silk Browser, download the ES File Explorer .apk file, and install it as soon as it is downloaded. If you don't install it immediately after it's downloaded, it'll be impossible to find it, and you may have to do it again, so, let's do it correctly the first time.
After installing the ES File Explorer, at this point, you have many options. You can use the above step to install the Google installer, or you can use the ES File explorer to install it if you had it pre-downloaded to your memory card.
After you installed Google Installer, run it, tap on 'Install', and it will download and install the latest versions of Google Play Store, Google Services Framework, Google Account Manager, Google Play Service, and the Google Calendar Synchronization Service.
If you prefer to use RootJunky's Supertool, a PC and a data cable will be required to follow this option though....
STEP 5: MAKING GOOGLE NOW YOUR DEFAULT LAUNCHER
Using your available options now (Silk Browser or ES File Explorer), you can use either options to install Launcher Hijack. This will override the Fire Launcher, and give you the many available options of customizing the home screen of your Fire.
After installing Launcher Hijack, it's best to install Google Now Launcher. Now you have 3 options in which to install this. Via a browser of your choice (Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Silk, because the Play Store should be installed and running by now), via ES File explorer if you have it pre-downloaded on your memory card, or via the Google Play Store, which, of course, is the easier option.
Open Launcher Hijack, and if Google doesn't show up, click on the three descending dots on the top right hand corner, and select 'Launchers Only.' If it still doesn't, disselect 'Hide System Apps'. It should show up now. When it does, a pop up will appear. Select OK. Next, Go to Settings, go to Accessability, scroll all the way down and tap on 'To detect home button press,' and tap on the switch to turn it on. Now, tap on the home screen, and there you have it, your new Amazon Fire 'Android' Tablet.
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
-You can use any launcher you want, but I prefer the Google Now Launcher because of the ability to install widgets without problems, the file size, and the real stock Android look.
- You may want to install other apps from Google like Gmail, YouTube, Google+, Drive, Photos, Chrome, Contacts, etc. to get a better android user experience.
- All of Amazon's apps will still be there..., TRY TO AVOID THEM! They're the bloatware now! lol
I hope this helps, and if you have any questions, feel free to comment a question, and I will answer. It may not be immediately, but I will answer.
God bless y'all!

Thanks for these instructions. I have a Fire HD 8 and one thing I just can't seem to get working are app notifications...push notifications from apps won't show up no matter what settings I try to do. Permission settings are all set so that apps are allowed to show notifications, but no dice. I even did a factory reset and followed your instructions as above to 'Google-ize' it, but no go. Any ideas?
