Just wondering if the pain in the ass slow USB mounting / file transfer problem has been fixed yet in ICS / are there any roms with the fix added? I really wanna change to ICS but the slow transfers were killing me. I know I can use clockwork but I find that annoying!
Thanks in advance!
I actually havn't had a problem with the usb transfer speed. Latest drivers on Win7 x64, 4.0.3 stock ROM on an i9023. Same if not better than GB. Though this COULD have something to do with Ezekeel's GLaDOS kernel - I did not try transferring with the stock kernel.
What so u mean by latest drivers? I just plugged the phone in and it installed something (drivers??) automatically and I got message saying it was ready to use, then waited what seemed like hours to transfer a few movies over...lol I am on a i9023 as well, but am using windows XP. File transfer is lightning fast on my gb daily rom.
Latest probably wasn't the right word, and i believe it was the adb drivers. Thinking about it probably has nothing to do with the transfer rates.
From what I understand it is not acutally mounting as USB storage, but ICS is capable of doing this as the nexus s has seperate partitions for system / storage, so the question is which roms have implemented this, so far I have been told Nexus Beam does, will try it later ....any others?
matr1x + ics on a nexus s 9020t.. USB still slow for everyone?
Has somebody fixed the slow usb problem yet? Still have it on ics + matr1x 17.0... Some setting or update I can install to make the usb speeds > 600-700kbps?
Thanks.

I just flashed to Pinnacle 1.3( was on Fasty III before ) and I've noticed that with Gingerbread Roms, i just cant seem to be able to Mount the File system on my Windows 7 pc.
Using USB-Debugging mode, i connect my Capy to my pc and then mount the file system, but it doesnt show up in my PC
i also tried directly mounting it as Mass Storage, again not showing up!
Tried all USB Ports, Different Cable etc etc
Weird thing is, when i flash back to Stock using Odin 1 click, ie when im on JF6, I am able to Mount the File system!!!
Another Weird thing is, that i am able to Mount my phone ( with Pinnacle or Fasty) on my friends PC, by installing the same drivers that i have for my PC
whats Wrong? I have also uninstalled all drivers and re installed them, used driver cleaners etc
Never had that problem on win 7. Don't know what to tell you.
Are you using the correct drivers?
Yea!! i am...i really dont know whats the problem! and i dont wanna format the whole thing!
Im using the drivers mentioned in the Sticky Threads...ODIN 1 click thread to be precise

When you say you tried another cable, do you mean another SAMSUNG cable or something else? The problem you describe is very often attributable to the cable. The Samsung cable that came with my Cappy worked just fine with my old computer (PowerMac G5), but refused to work with my new iMac.
I tried also using a RocketFish micro USB cable, and had zero luck with that.
After much screwing around and swearing, I tried using my wife's MOTOROLA cable, and the computer recognized the phone with that.
I'm nothing close to an expert on electronics, but I suspect it has something to do with voltages on different computers.
I suggest trying to get your hands on a Motorola cable and seeing if that fixes it. Perhaps the Gingerbread ROMs have different voltage settings? Dunno...but try a Motorola cable.
hmmmm, i just tried a micro usb cable from a blackberry....ill try out the Motorola one....thanks for the suggestion

You may have another option, too...at least for transferring files. I've been using an app called WiFi File Explorer PRO for several weeks, and I love it. You can connect to the phone via WiFi (if you have it available) and transfer files back and forth just using a web browser on your computer.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dooblou.WiFiFileExplorerPRO&feature=more_from_developer
Since I started using this app, I haven't needed to futz with a cable at all. It obviously won't help you with Odin, Heimdall, or any one-click utilities that require you to be connected via USB, but it will help you get files on your phone for flashing with CWM.
Not sure if it's an option for you, but it might help alleviate some of your issue.
Great Suggestion and seems very handy...thanks a lot!
I have erased the contents of the phones internal USB storage. Now I notice that I cant mount to my PC.
Anybody know what happening or had same problem
Have you already tried formatting with CWM?
Perhaps this thread contains some useful information for you.

I know this is a long shot but go to your dialer and input *#*#8778#*#* and make sure it looks like this pic. I fool with QPST and other things and sometimes forget to change the settings back to PDA and it will not mount. Long shot but what the hey...

Typed it in and got nothing. Using the android dialler when I pressed the last * the dialer cleared and did nothing.
Just installed the SDK so I could use (hopefully) ADB. When trying to install the Google driver rev4 windows says that rev 4 is no better than the one currently installed.
Also when I connect to the PC it says that the USB device is not recognised either.
I reckon my next thing to try flashing a new Rom via ROM manager.
well that didnt work in fact it has got considerably worse. I used ROM manager to download and install a new rom but didnt install the Gapps how daft do I feel now cos all I got is version of Blandroid running with no Android Market access to download ROM Manager.
I can access my WiFi network so I thought I would simply visit XDA via the mobile browser and download a fresh version of CM7 and then re-flash via ClockworkMod . However all I get is download fail error. I guess it doesn't know where to save the file.
So to recapp I have the following
a Nexus S (running Blandroid ROM)
a Win XP laptop that does not recognise my Nexus S (therefore cant install the Google driver to use ADB)
The Nexus S recovery is ClockworkMod and accessible.
I cannot accept that it is bricked (not just yet anyway)
I have another Laptop with Ubuntu installed. Will this help me in anyway to find a fix. I am not that experienced in Linux unfortunately.
1
i have the same problem. only thing you can try is.
pull out battery. let something metal touch the usb conecter .conecting the metal to a unload source(for static electricity.)
wait couple of hours, and try again.
if that didnt work.
2
open your nexus.
unplug all cables and screws from the main board.
again touch the usb conecter with something metal that has a ground source.
and try again.
the last step worked for me the 1st time pluging it in after i did that.
after that. usb didnt work again.
it probably has to do something with the usb phone charger and static electricity.
but i havent tested it.
will give that a try when I have a bit more time.
In the meantime I have been setting up ADB on my other laptop running Ubuntu 11.04. But unfortunately the Nexus S didnt register on the OS either. I thought you didnt need additional drivers for Linux only windows! I am really puzzled now as I thought the Linux option would have allowed me to flash a different ROM other than Blandroid (which isnt bad its just I dont have the Gapps installed)

you still have wifi/3G and CWM or bloothoot?
download the Gapps zip. put it on dropbox or any hosting site.download it trough your mobile browser and flash it trug CWM.
or use blutethoot to download it.
might be a short fix.until you get USB to work.
(this is how i do it cuz my usb doesnt work.)
I did try that but for some reason after stating that the download had started - Download Unsuccessful was displayed in the notification area. As useual I open a door only to find a brick wall on the other side.
In the meantime I am back with my HTC Hero.
Thanks for helping anyway!

try difrent download solutuins.
seeing you have HTC here.why not tranver your zip trug your hero to your Ns?(with bluethoot)
boy, i hope you haven't started tearing your phone apart yet...
since you still have access to cwm: try to format your sdcard with it. looks like you haven't done that yet.
I would try to uninstall all drivers and associated programs on your PC. Then reinstall the drivers. Windows can be very finicky as you know. Also try PDANET drivers.

The NS wouldn't connect to laptop with Ubuntu running. I am beginning to think that I have a faulty micro USB port.
Ill try the pdanet drivers later tonight - are they different from the google rev 4 drivers?

Same PC with dual boot? Yeah, try another cord and a another PC. The fact that you plugged it in and it's recognized in some way in the tray says something is fubar. I just don't know if it is the phone though. Best of luck.
Nah, different laptop and different cable. Hope that it charges OK. Gonna have to get a WiFi file transfer app working to move files to and from.
glad to help out :3
there are allot of people that have this USB isue and its HW NS related. nothing we actually can do about it.plus it also happens after changing kernels and roms(i supose) overclocking might be 1 of the reasons thus the voltages not being original.
btw, sorry for my half assed english x3
Double check the modem/pda settings mentioned in post #3. Should be set to pda to see the files on the SD.

Having the same issue. I tried that, no such luck.
My computer *did* connect at one point though... couldn't mount USB storage (wasn't prompted) but it did ask for a driver, and currently has a Samsug USB one installed. It won't accept the SDK driver (not 64-bit capable? Or NS4G? Idk...)

I got nothing when I entered *#*#8778#*#*. I simply typed it in using the keypad on the dialer. Is there something else I should be doing?
Hey guys
I been unable to copy large files to my phone or the sd card while i use the mtp or camera method. I can copy small files without a problem, but when the file is 100mb or larger i will always get an error. Is there any fix for this?
I attached a picture of the error i get.
I just copied a 350MB file and played it back w/o any problems via USB.
How are you copying the file (USB/WiFi/?) and what platform/tools are being used?
I'm using windows 7 x64 server pack 1. I'm using the original usb it came it but no luck. Tried my nexus usb and still same problem. I always get that error. I can cope other files under 100mb without a problem.
Edit: I try to copy it by my computer were the device appears, do I need a software to copy files?

Welcome to the wonders of mtp!
Are you copying to the sd card? If so it could be a bad card. If it happens on internal storage also ..well you now know why mtp suxs ass.
You might want to try the usb storage mod although that only works for the sd card.
And no you should not need any special software mtp is supported in win7
Damn MTP crap..lol.. I kept trying with no luck, but i notice that the drivers always try to install when i plug and unplug the device. I have installed the drivers before, but the phone kept trying to install with fails. Is there a way to clean my pc of all samsung drivers so that i could try a fresh install again?

I was having the same issue. was pissing me off so badly. my problem was I was using the front USB on my computer. ( I built my own) So I switched it to a port in the back of the computer and it works no problems now. Was weird.....
I'm having the same problem on a mac laptop. I haven't tried a different computer but on the same mac, i didn't have problems with MTP on Galaxy Nexus.
It took some cursing and persistence to transfer my songs over...

GS3 is a crap I sell it for Xperia S. I wish I bought the Xperia S first. GS3 is too expensive and found out that Xperia S has better screen, camera.. And regarding the Quad Core of GS3, It doesn't do much compare to Xperia S, dual core is enough, Quad Core is their advertisement to sell their phones. Multitasking in Xperia S is enough. Opening 10 apps at the same time to make the Quad Core fully functional?? WTF 10 apps at the same time?!?
Carefully check
This error indicates that the GSIII is refusing to have crap music put on it.
I got it to work connecting it on a usb port on the back of my pc and by re-installing the drivers a few times. The copying speed is very slow compared to my old phone. Thanks for the help guys.
I'm on Open Your Eyes VRBLK3,with rooted & Unlocked Bootloader. I was going to flash a ROM so I made a nandroid, etc. I went to transfer the ROM from my PC to my SD card via USB but when I plug in my phone it makes the noises windows makes for USB devices, my device shows the USB symbol in the pull down and says "Connected as an Installer". When I touch for more options they are Media Device (MTP) or Camera (PTP) and my device doesn't appear as a drive like it always has in the past.
What am I missing?
Thanks
Did you try Samsungs newest driver? I randomly get problems with usb connecting too. Usually after I flash a non stock kernel it kills usb working right for me. On windows 8 and 7

Cleanrom 5.5.1
Got it figured out, mtd does allow all file transfers, I'm an idiot, thx
tappity tap tapped on my SGS3
i have installed ALL THE DRIVERS regarding the phone. . windows doesnt regoniise it.Mass storage doesnt work too.
Yeah... if you've installed all the drivers, that's why it doesn't work. Uninstall them all, reboot, and only install the right one. Which one is that? Depends on what ROM you have loaded.
USB or Bluetooth? Does the connection work for anything else at that port?
Win XP, 7 or 8?
Froyo, GB, ICS or JB? Which exact ROM in each might make a difference too.
After answering those questions, try the search and you'll likely find the answer.

USB .
WINDOWS 8 . Doesnt work in windows 7 too.
ICS cMIUI ROM
The standard rule on our ICS ROMs is that they use the generic Google Android USB driver, not the specific phone or manufacturer driver. If you have Kies or anything else like that installed, you may need to remove it, especially if you've installed its drivers to every USB port.
Additionally, some ROMs just don't have mass storage support. Make sure you test it in recovery before you say it's a problem with the phone. If you pick a ROM that doesn't have support for something, that's your choice, not the phone's fault. After you validate that your phone can talk to the computer in recovery, reboot to system, wait for everything to finish mounting up, and immediately try to mount USB. If it works, great. If not, looks like your ROM doesn't have that support and you'll only be copying files using AirDroid, Samba-something (lots of options/second words), or recovery.
