Force Close Error popup - Motorola Atrix 2

I was getting a force close error on my Atrix 2 and tried everything to fix it. The error I was getting was.. "The process com.motorola.service.main has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
I even returned the phone to the store and got a new one, and later that same day started getting the error again. I figured out the solution if anyone else is getting this same error.
The email situation on this phone is the most unintuitive thing I have ever used. For sync purposes I logged in with my gmail credentials in the "Accounts" section. That also included my gmail email account in the "Gmail" app. But in order to use my other email addresses I had to use the "Email" app. Instead of having to use two apps for email, I decided to enter my gmail address in the Email app as well... that was the problem.
I ended up leaving my gmail address in the accounts entry of the phone, but I turned off notifications for Gmail and Email... and the Messaging app (wow, isn't that redundant?) I installed K-9 Mail and am happily viewing all my mail in one application with no force close error.
I hope this helps someone.

That is an android thing not a Motorola thing.
I have several different email address from several different companies. What I do is set up my gmail accounts to retrieve my email from the outside email accounts and then I only have to set up my gmail accounts on the phone. I can send a receive email from all accounts that I have set up.
For more info on setting that up go here http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=21288

Thanks for the link. I didn't know that gmails mail fetcher would work with other accounts. It looks like it limits to 5 email addresses though. Personally I have 9 email addresses so that wouldn't be an option anyway. K9 really seems to be the best option for me.

As much as I love android, I have to admit the iPhone email system is much more intuitive than the stock '3 different apps' in android to handle email.

It is not an Android issue, just that Motorola did a horrible job of handling it. I have had the original iphone, and the first 3g, I hated them, and I was sent a cease and desist letter from Apple, because I was one of the devs there helping with jailbreaking etc. I have to admit that they did a great job of integrating an all in one solution.
The True Android systems that do not have some "front end" over it, like Moto, HTC, and samsung do, don't have that issue, because they don't come with apps for anything like that on them, you get to install your own e-mail solutions that you like, from the market.
Try a true Google device, and it will only come with the ability to get Gmail, and usually no other email apps are installed by default.
That is why there are some great apps that allow an all in one e-mail solution if you like, including exchange and such, if you want that too. I do have to admit though that Android is WAY more flexible than the iphone for things like this though, but it is still more for someone who likes to tinker and play to get things working they way they want.

I'm a pretty intelligent guy. Im a programmer and I study Theoretical Physics as a hobby. It took me 3 days to figure out what Motorola was trying to accomplish with their email / messaging apps.
I love the versatility of android though. I'm looking forward to a custom ROM release for the Atrix 2.

Hence the reason why you probably like android.
Your wait for custom ROMs is almost over. The reason the dev section has been kinda quiet lately, is because the few devs we have in here, me included, have been hacking away on ROMs since there is a way to recover now.
I will be releasing a couple myself next week, and I know others are coming shortly after that. Mine will all be close to stock for right now. Others are trying to port some great ROMs for us all here, so that is coming too.... just hang tight a little longer...

Sweet! Thanks for all your work!

[Q] How Do I Get My Apps Back???

Hi,
When I first got my phone a month ago and not knowing what I was doing, when prompted to log into a Gmail account, I set things up with my tertiary/third-most-used account. Little did I know the consequences. When I decided I wanted to now set the phone up with my primary account, I discovered that the only way to do so was with a hard reset!
Well, after going through that process and now wanting to download and install several dozen Market apps that I previously had installed (several of which I'd paid for), I logged into Market, only to find a message saying "No downloads from Android Market."
I assume that Market doesn't recognize my new Gmail address as belonging to the same person as the one I was using previously (even after I added it). Is there a way that I can associate the two accounts for Market so that I can get my apps back?
Thanks!
This might be a dumb question and a little too late, but is there a reason you NEED the phone set up with your most used account? If I'm not mistaken, it ought to be painfully easy to set the phone up with a second google account for things like gmail and calendar and such. You might even be able to get contact sync from a second google account, with apps and such just syncing from the old account that you already used for that purpose.
I'd have at least given that a try before doing a full wipe, but you might have reasons I haven't thought of yet.
Not a dumb question at all. In fact, I'm the one feeling pretty dumb right now, for jumping the gun like I did. I did have a couple of other reasons, but I'm beginning to see that it wasn't as

...worth the cost. The other problem now is that I'm deluged by mail from my primary Gmail account. It also goes to my ISP account, where I can read it much more efficiently.
I can see another hard reset in my near future. :-(
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I can tell you from experience (I've flashed a few roms...) that a hard reset isn't nearly as hard when you're syncing to the google account that has all your contacts and apps attached to it...
Silas, you lost me. What do you mean that it isn't as hard? Because you don't lose as much data? Are you talking about doing a hard reset without switching accounts like I did?
Would I be better to reset again (not a big deal at this point) and go back to the way it was, or not? Would I get my apps back (I hope)?
FWIW, I use my Gmail accounts only to collect and back up my email accounts, and for quick searches. I thought I might start using Google Calendar, though, and thought it might be better to use the one in my main Gmail account. Possibly I could sync the same calendar to both accounts, though -- could I?
And finally, is there any way at all to get my paid apps back with my current setup?
Thanks, everyone.

This might help you. Go into gmail and click the account address in the upper right corner. At the bottom is an option for adding an account. You should be able to let you apps back after adding that other account back. Hope it helps. If not, at least I tried.

Well, I thought I had replied a couple of hours ago, and here's my message, still waiting to post. Sigh....
Thank you, ZeroRilix. Unfortunately, no dice.
When I did that, there were already three accounts there. After hard resetting and setting up my primary Gmail account, I had also set up my other two Gmail account in Accounts & sync in Settings. However, when I viewed them as you suggested, it said that neither of them had been synced. So I made sure that Contacts, Calendar, and Mail were synced for all three accounts. When I went into Market and viewed My Apps, all I saw were still the few I had downloaded since the hard reset.
Thanks, though....
No prob. Everything you've already tried should've worked. I might suggest contacting Android Market and letting them know what's going on. I have included the link to the appropriate form to fill out. Sorry your still having issues, and maybe they can help you further. If you get the issue resolved, post back here so users who might run into this same issue cam fix it. Good luck!

I thought for sure I'd replied to this, but I can't see my response anywhere. Don't know why I'm having such trouble posting.
Thanks very much for this. I sent a support request yesterday and will let you know what they say. Unfortunately, it's Saturday, and I assume nobody's there to answer. Why do things always go wrong on the weekend?
Hi,
Here's my latest update. Not wanting to wait till Monday or later for a reply from Market Support, I decided to try posting my question to the Android forum at androidforums.com. I got a couple of helpful responses and I'm back in business. Here's the thread for anyone interested:

The short version is that I started over the way I had initially and all my apps downloaded automatically!
Thanks again for the help.

Um - the built-in email app? Just set it to push delivery. I'm assuming you are using an Exchange server for email?
for true push you want k9 mail in the market. there was also maildroid but people prefered k9 even though they had nearly identical features.

How is ActiveSync's push not "true push"?
well i havent cared to check lately to see if it improved but if you installed k9 on the captivate and had both running k9 would always give you a notification long before the stock app. but im thinking back almost a year, the email stock app may be improved now, lately i have only used my phone for checking email not replying or composing but i remember the stock apps being limited. k9 seemed more fully featured, could attach any file type and had a global inbox for all your accounts.

Well, I used "Improved Email" which is a slightly modified version of the stock app - primarily because it lets me setup multiple Exchange accounts. But anyway, I routinely get notifications of new emails on it before my desktop notifies me (granted, my desktop is running in "Cached Mode" - but still...).
oh sorry. due to insomnia my brain isnt working. yes the stock app may have push for exchanger servers but it doesn't for personal emails. k9 might not be "true" either but it is much faster than the stock app can be on your gmail and other accounts. i need to watch how i word things but what i was getting at is in many cases k9 is very near real time notifications for most email accounts.

In that case I defer to your experience. I don't really use my Gmail account, so I have no idea how quickly it delivers email. I only assumed the poster was using Exchange because that's Blackberry's claim to fame - and I've never understood why Blackberry users seem to think that BB is the only way to get their email immediately - Exchange server has had that functionality baked in for years.

well the gmail app delivers the gmails fast but that app sux for full time use
i used to use k9 and killed notifications for gmail and email. now i stopped caring, i dont have a work email anymore and i stopped using my other personal email from an isp i no longer use so im down to only my gmail but use my computer to reply now as nothing in my life is that urgent at the moment that i need to reply from my phone where ever i am. i may be out of touch with what works now.
Thanks for the help guys. FYI it has nothing to do with thinking that bb's are the only phones that can get instant email. Just some people arent as tech savvy or forgot since they havent owned htc/wm phones in a long time OR never owned android like myself.
I do appreciate all the help however guys!

Hotmail/Live settings with custom domain name

I can't find anywhere how to set a Hotmail/Live account that has a custom domain name. On Windows Mobile, the Windows Live app set up seamlessly. If I had a @hotmail.com domain, it would be easy. But my 'Live' email doesn't use the hotmail.com domain.

Sweet! that did the trick, at least for the email part. Everything I was reading had me trying settings for and Exchange email. Just about every page I found had me tweaking hotmail.com settings, and one combination I tried sync'd my calender and contacts, but only downloaded one email.
OK, went back to the Exchange settings over the pop3. It was working correctly before, I just didn't realize it doesn't back sync earlier emails.
My company email is [email protected]xyzcompany.com and I used m.hotmail.com as the server and it seems to be syncing correctly.
OK, this thing won't keep any email that is more than two days old. No matter what number of days I select. It syncs contacts and calender just fine tho.
*scratches head*
SI don't know that it would help but they just released an official hot mail app in the market. I know it isn't the greatest solution but it may solve your problem.

Hey thanks buddy. I searched the market for an 'official' MS app. I was looking for "Windows Live" as my search words, and all I found were 3rd party apps.
It seems to work pretty good. And handles multiple hotmail/Live email accounts.
Now if I can just keep all my contacts straighten out. This phone like to sync toooo dam much info, and I've been deleting duplicates and redundant info for days now! Ah.. gotta love the learning curve that comes with a new (to me) OS.

End of email turns into chinese?

I'm having a rather odd problem, whenever my friend and I are replying back and forth over email,
the bottom of the email keeps turning into a complete gibberish slab of what seems to be Chinese/Japanese.
The last reply shows fine, but the ones before it are garbled.
I'm running ICS on an asus transformer prime, not rooted and using stock email app.
I have one hotmail account (used to correspond with my friend) and one gmail account on it.
Id gladly supply more info if requested.
Anyone have any clue as to what on earth is going on?
- Sven
Are you using the "stock email app" which means the "Email" app (as opposed to the Gmail app)?
Yessum, the standard email app, not the gmail one.
Ive done some tests to try and replicate the problem, to no avail.
Ive emailed myself from one account to another and replied back and forth about 10 times,
but I can not get it to "chinesify" the older replies lower down the email.
So im not sure exactly where this weird corrupted crud is coming from.
My friend describes it as "there are a buncha blocks at the bottom",
I assume its the same Chinese im seeing except he is missing the font for it.
If theres another good email app (with widget/alerting!) that would solve this,
id gladly give it a spin since in my opinion the standard one isn't all that amazing.
People mention K-9 but that seems to be very phone oriented, not at all for tablets.

[Q] Alternative Email Clients

So I have had my 12.2 since the second week of April. My 2 week return period came and went as I do like this tablet a lot. Coming from an iPad and working in a MS world I really loathe the Samsung default email client. The font size is horrificly large. The font settings in the client and the system itself seem to have little to no effect making it look fugly. (yes im aware this is an opinion)
Outlook is great on my phone but looks like a** on this tablet.
I am a Hotmail/Outlook user (I do have gmail but been forwarding to Outlook for 2 years now and I suppose I could go back and try the Google client if need be)
I was curious as to what other clients the other 12.2 users are rocking...
*note - not rooted........yet*
First, try changing to a different font other than default. There are several which come with the P900, as well as a large number you can buy on the playstore for 99 cents. Some make the default Samsung email client quite usable IMO.
That said, look at cloud magic. It's a great all in one solution.
I use Aquamail. It has a number of user configurable items and seems to work very well. For Web outlook connected to my enterprise account I use OWM Web email.

I second Aquamail. I've tried a handful of exchange compatible ones and this one is currently tops on my list followed by Touchdown.
K-9 for me, using IMAP servers. Took a little digging to figure out how to configure a couple of things, but once I did, it's been very intuitive and flawless for me.

I love K-9 too, but they need to release a tablet UI skin. The mobile UI leaves a lot to be desired when you go into tablet portrait mode.

I almost always use it in landscape on the tablet, so less of an issue. Just wish I could get some of the "Send..." options like Reply as visible commands!

Does cloudmagic work with multiple exchange calendars? Currently I'm using Touchdown and generally it works OK but my exchange account at work has calendars for meetings, on-call shifts, car use, and a bunch of other stuff. I haven't had any luck as of yet locating an app that could do this. Despite that KitKat supposedly supports it.

i'll add my vote for k-9. been using it for awhile, does everything and works really well with multiple accounts from multiple sources (9 email addresses spread over gmail, yahoo, and live) keeps everything color coded and organized so i know exactly what came from where.
google client... ugh. as far as i know there is still no way to disable 'conversation view'; where it group emails together in coversations with newest on the bottom, so you're guaranteed to NOT notice new messages and be unable to find anything.
-lq
I could never get K9 to work with the exchange servers my company uses. I've tried a few others including purchasing licenses Touchdown and Moxier. I ended up settling with Aquamail which seems to be the most stable and reliable app yet for my needs. The widget settings are just right as are the theme settings (I like transparent scrolling widgets and dark app themes) and the UI itself works well on tablets.
[email protected] works great!
