SGS 4G poor camera - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hi guys
I used to have SGS i9000 before i bought SGS 4G. I love our incredible ROMs and I've managed to do things I didn't do with the i9000.
One thing that is always the same on all ROMs i tried here is the poor camera results.
On the i9000 I videotaped a concert in the dark on HD and the result was crispy HD video regardless of the lack of flash.
I also took good quality still images on the spot.
On the SGS 4G on all ROMs i get louzy unfocused blured videos and it takes ages to take a poor still image.
This is unclear since both models have the same 5MP camera.
My wife's SGS 4G is the same as mine, so it's not a specific phone problem.
I'd be glad to hear and read your insights regarding this issue. I know dsexton did some camera tweaking but i haven't tried it. I'm on Valhalla final now.
Thanks.

My camera is pretty good at taking still pictures, video quality on the other hand is kinda iffy. In my opinion, our camera is somewhat better than most 5MP cameras out there. Then again, it's just my opinion.

Mine works well for both still pictures & video. low light sucks due to lack of a flash but otherwise I can't complain.

I am on Octane-V3.0 XPLOD and the tweaks worked for me on the rom.

Why are the pictures so poor??

I am coming from a Vibrant and although by the time I bought this phone the Vibrant was laggy, GPS was hit and miss, and allot of apps would force close, it still had a very good camera. I don't understand why this camera at 5mp takes such poor pics. I have a very good camera but sometimes I do forget it, it's too heavy, or I don't charge it so having a nice camera on the phone would be beneficial. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

You really think the camera is bad? Seems better than the hd2 I had. Have you blown them up on a computer and looked at them or are you just going off the phone? Maybe im just easy to please its really fast and works pretty well
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
No I haven't blown them up I just zoom in from the phone itself. I take the same pic with my husbands iPhone4 zoom in and it is still crisp and clear, with my phone it is very pixelated.

I saw another post around here discussing this, and in it someone said to change... from widescreen to 4:3? I believe..? I don't have the phone yet so can't look in the phone for ya. It's here in the forum tho.
I think the pictures are pretty good. Here are a few I took a couple of days ago:
Speaking of "pop"... Those reds look really nice and deep. Nice choice of images.

Strange. I started the other thread because mine were NOT so good. There are limited settings in the default camera, and I have set mine to the highest resolution and do not see any other adjustments in the setting menu.
At the wide mode, my files were only .6 - 1.2 mb (compressed I am sure). Yours are 3 mb - and much better quality - are you using the OEM camera?
I get MUCH better shots using the 360 Camera app - but not when using the stock camera app. If you are using the stock camera app - is there a setting I have missed?
I vaguely remember a post that said the camera is not set to 5MP by default. You have to set it to 5MP within the settings.

I set it to 5MP first thing - so-so pictures followed.
I use Camera 360. The uncompressed images look far better than when using the stock camera app.
It's unfortunate that the stock camera app doesn't allow manual compression settings. But that's why we have developers.
stock camera compresses the s out of the shots.
Go vigenette or camera 360 (all these were taken using either of the 2)

heh, I could have been in any of those pics. I was at Don's Bogam BBQ the other day (down the st from pic #3), playing with my new MT4G at dinner.

[Q] Better camera app?

Been playing around with the camera since yesterday and I have to say I'm mildly disappointed. My Samsung Vibrant shot excellent photos for a cell phone camera (my daily driver is a Canon 5DMKII).
Looking at the specs and the size of the sensor this should be a dead ringer for top camera, but the dynamic range seems to be worse than the Vibrant and compression more heavy.
Are there good camera app alternatives that can use the Optimus/G2x hardware?
There is...
I've been using Vignette with my G2, and now that I have a G2X, this app comes in handy even more... besides taking really good quality shots... you can set the volume button as your shutter button. Voila: you got a physical camera button on your G2X.

This is the MIUI Camera app. It's a full screen camera app. Works better than default app. Download it and change the extension to .apk and install it via package installer or adb.
Camera 360 is a wonderful camera app
Makes ur camera work amazing wonders
Worth buying
But there are ways
I purchased mine abdbyave no regrets
very hi def and even made my mt4g camera look amazing

Try lgCamera from the market, there's a free version too. It's made for LG phones, so hopefully it will work well.
It adds support for autofocus in video mode! I hope that feature works for the G2x

This is a great app. Thank you so much for the post. I recommend this for all G2x users!
i personally would not use MIUI as HD 720P seems not to work
BUT on the plus side it is made by XDA-Developers
they always make good stuff and are the leaders in innovations for the smart-phone market
(shameless plug maybe I'll get a cookie for it )
i don't see how this app would do anything to improve image quality on the G2X
as the app was generally made to replace the clunky and overblown GUI software that came with the Galaxy S / Vibrant,
so how will that improve the image quality on the G2X
as DataJunkie wants, he did not ask for a better GUI but better quality pictures
maybe i miss-understand
anyway the app can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996867
and a review of the app here
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-miui-custom-camera-app-on-samsung-galaxy-s-vibrant/
Just my 2 cents,
i realize i did not try or test this app on the G2X,
so my 2 cents maybe worthless
.
I use camera 360 ultimate, i love that app, is awesome, it has hdr mode and a few other modes, you should try it.

Strange I used to switch between camera 360 and vignette on my MT4G but now when I try those apps on this phone it seems really anyone else notice this?

These are all really good suggestions, thanks guys.
I think I'm going to do a test with 3 different camera apps and lock down the phone on a tripod to compare. I'm interested in knowing how much the camera is held back by software and how much it can be improved upon.
Now all I want is a cameraphone that can shoot RAW.
Where can I get camera 360? I can't find it in the market?

I know, it's weird, you have to type it as "camera360" or else it won't show up.
Okay i see it now, thanks

I was disappointed with the Camera app on my MT4G and went with Camera 360 due to extensive compression (at leat 2 to 1) on stock app.
I think this one is much better, and it makes large files per picture which indicates it does not compress that much. Have you checked out all the settings?
The flash goes off too soon with Camera 360, just tried it out.

did you ever find out the result?
I like Camera Zoom FX the best then Vignette. Both of these have hardware hotkeys. Camera Zoom FX has stable shot mode that Vignette doesn't have. Camera360 Ultimate is ok for me. Stock camera app seems to have brightest flash and very noticeable.
Does anybody have a .apk of the MIUI app? I'm having a hard time with the .zip :/

Poor up close pictures

Hi all,
Got a slight issue here, not sure if i'm not doing it right but i have tried all kinds of settings and nothing worked.
Anyway, heres what happened...... A butterfly flew into our work and was bugging everyone pretty much all day it eventually landed pretty much right next to me and i wanted to test out the macro on this phone, so i switched to close up and attempted to take a picture but it just came out all blurry, so i changed to different combinations of settings, always getting the same results, it kept focusing past perfection to blurriness??
Either way it was really annoying, I don't actually give a **** about butterflies i just wanted to be able to take a pic up close?
I'm running coredroid at the moment however i believe the camera is the native Sensation one. ??
Any ideas?
I notice that too. It focuses amazingly, and then instantly goes blurry. You have to be a couple of inches away before the macro works.

Is there a decent guide for the sensation camera? I find this to be worse than the desire hd. E.g. if I take a picture of my dog with flash his eyes are always glowing (flash reflection) on the sensation, but never on the desire hd

The camera is good enough for a phone. Buy something dedicated for that kind of work. And never use flash for making pictures, ever.

Poor close up photographs is a general photography issue. Having trouble avoiding blurry photos up close goes for any type of photography when you're taking shots handheld. That said, I just tried the close-up setting on a wireless mouse and a pen, and at about 4 inches away I'm getting clear shots even though I'm in low light right now.

But my point is flash works great on the desire hd and it's shocking on the sensation. That's not how it should be!

You obviously don't know anything about photography. Flash is absolutely needed in cases where there is insufficient lighting. Otherwise the output will lack detail and be noisy. If the direct flash is too intense, you can always use a reflective surface to produce a softer lighting.
Are you using the macro setting for the camera?

This camera sucks

Is it just me or is the camera on this phone horrible? The .3 megapixel camera my parents got me when I graduated high school 11 yrs ago took better pictures than this phone. I have it set to highest quality settings and have Valhalla booster pack but the pics suck. They are never in focus either. I could do the tomahawk chop (Atlanta Braves thing) while taking a picture with my G2x and have better results. I just took a picture of my dog 5 feet away and its blurry

Look for dsextons camera tweaks first in his AS tweak thread in dev section then his Bravio tweak in the general section. You need to flash them in that order.
They made a nice difference for the camera on my phone.
Check if the lens on your camera is clean. Pictures get really blurry when its not. And try to focus before taking the picture, that helps

Yeah i had that problem once i just has to actually wipe the camera lens on the back
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I'm also always disappointed from the pics i get. I'm currently with dsexton702 modded bravia engin camera, using ZOOMFX camera with 3MP to be able to shoot fast.
I once had SGS i9000 which has the same camera device and pictures and movies were much much better.

Camera wont focus in the dark

The camera on my Atrix 2 won't focus in the dark because the flash will not turn on for it to focus. I can take flash photos, but it first focuses (at least attempts to) in the dark, then the flash goes on and the photo is taken. I have the 2.3.6 SuperCharged V5 ROM on my phone. Is this a problem with the ROM or is it across all Atrix 2s?
Thanks
I noticed the same problem, and I'm still running stock rom. I haven't tried any other camera apps to see if they'll do better, but it could be a possibility.
i usually use stock browser and have the 'flower' or macro setting on....takez great pics that way!
may be trying lgcamera can help. there is a news of xda about that.

All atrix 2 phones. Our cameras and most droid cameras are lame imo.
I dont know why we still havent matched upto the iPhones camera.its been years since the first iphone and we still have cameras that hesitate/lag before a shot is taken?....craziness. the iPhones camera could take a rapid succesion of clear shots like its nothing.but our droid phones not only hesitate and sometimes take shot before flash but also unless you have 3 legs like a tripod the photo takes a lifetime to focus.
its impossible unless using some third party app which may take the shots but as far as i know degrades the true 100% camera quality.

I have been using an application called HD Camera from the market. Really pumps the photo up. Takes 3 pics rapidly in different exposures, only drawback is both you and your subject have to be still. There's 2 of them a free and paid. No flash with free. Just my 2 cents worth.
Edit....HDR CAMERA is name.
