iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: S3 Declared Victor
1 day ago by Mike Johnson
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been out since May and recently met its biggest rival, the iPhone 5. The comparisons and reviews – and even some teardowns – are flying. So let’s have a crack at it too.
iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3
Because Apple is famously reticent about internals like clock speeds, RAM and processors, teardowns are necessary to see if the facts stand up to the Apple hype. So the following details aren’t coming directly from Apple’s specs sheet but what the top tech testers are discovering about the iPhone 5 after some “dissections”.
So, let’s begin. The phones, as we can see from sales figures, are hugely popular. The iPhone 5 got more than five million pre-orders in its first three days, and Samsung expects to have sold 30 million Galaxy S3 units by the end of the year.
Dimensions: The iPhone 5 is 123.8×58.6×7.6mm and 112g in weight. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 136.6×70.6×8.6mm and weighs 133g. Ignoring sizes, as the two phones have such different screens, the iPhone 5 wins out on weight and thickness as this is how things work in the world of portable consumer electronics. One point to Apple.
Screens: The iPhone 5 has a 4”, 1,136x640p resolution screen that’s LED, IPS and TFT. It’s housed in Gorilla Glass. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8” 1,280x720p Super AMOLED screen that’s protected by Gorilla Glass 2. The iPhone 5 is easier to handle with one hand, but the S3 is way better for browsing and films, so it’s a draw here. However according to the folks over at DisplayMate, the S3 deserves an extra point as its display is more “high tech” than the iPhone 5. The S3 shows the full gamut of NTSC versus only 72 percent in the case of the iPhone 5. Advantage: Samsung.
Connectivity: The iPhone 5 has 3G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802. It also has that proprietary Lightning dock that you’ll just love to spend $30 on a new connector for.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has the same connectivity of the iPhone 5 but also has Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, Wireless Charging and DNLA There’s also a “one size fits all” microUSB cable, which means you can borrow a mate’s cable regardless of the smartphone he or she has. Winner: Samsung Galaxy S3
Memory/storage: Both have 1GB of RAM, along with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. However, the Samsung Galaxy S3 wins by a mile with its up-to-64GB of microSD memory expansion. The US Samsung Galaxy S3 also has 2GB of RAM so that is another point to note. Winner: S3
Processor: While Apple won’t reveal the architecture or frequency of the chipset, it looks, thanks to tests, that it’s based on two Apple ARMv7 cores (making it somewhere between A9 and A15). The frequency can go up to 1.3GHz but generally sits at 1.06GHz, and its A6 chip is helped along by a triple-core PowerVR SGX 543MP3.
We know for a fact that the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 1.4GHz Exynos 4412 chip with four Cortex A9 cores (international model), and the graphics is handled by a Mali-400MP GPU. There’s no contest here, although Apple fans will insist that iOS doesn’t need four cores. However, for multitasking, games and apps, the S3 should perform better (on paper at least). As for the US version of the S3, it boasts a higher clocked 1.5GHz dual-core processor. It may be short of 2 cores but it gets a 2GB dose of RAM to give it that extra kick. Winner: Samsung Galaxy S3
Camera: The pair are on a par here, with 8MP cameras with LED flash, simultaneous HD video and still capture, autofocus, touch focus, face detection, geo-tagging and image stabilisation. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has smile detection, but this doesn’t beat the iPhone 5 BSI sensor. User tests say that the iPhone 5 takes better photos in low light. One point for the iPhone 5.
Battery: The iPhone 5 has a Li-Ion 1,440mAh battery that’ll give up to eight hours of talk on 3G. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 2,100mAh battery that gives almost 12 hours on 3G. However when it comes to real life, though, users are reporting that the iPhone 5 does live up to its specs sheet but the Samsung Galaxy S3, despite its bigger battery, can’t lay claim to more as it tops out at around 8 hours as well. So it’s another tie here.
Operating system & apps: OSs are hard to compare fairly. There’s always going to be friction between iOS and Android because it’s a matter of taste more than anything else. If you like customizing the heck out of phones, go for Android, but if you prefer something streamlined out of the box and all you want to swap is ringtones and wallpapers, chose iOS.
The iPhone 5 has the advantage of being pre-loaded with iOS 6, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S3 is still waiting for Jelly Bean in most areas though. So while we can’t compare iOS and Android, we can say that in having the latest update and its features, the iPhone 5 has an advantage over the Samsung Galaxy S3.
iOS 6 might have Facebook integration, but Android ICS gives you the same integration with every app you care to install, like Google+, Facebook, Instagram, Picasa and Imgur.
Apple Maps has become the whipping boy of the year, whereas the S3 and TouchWiz have nifty features like Palm Swipe, Direct Call, Pop-up-Play and Smart Alert. I also found Siri to be better than S-Voice, but this could all change as soon as Jelly Bean brings Google Now. Then there is Google Maps of course which is preloaded in the Winner: iPhone 5. Taking all this into account, we’ll have to call it a draw again.
Design: The iPhone 5 wins hands down. Sure, there’s no great redesign, so it’s still as classy as ever, only lighter and slimmer. Samsung used a slightly more expensive looking plastic for the S3 than it had before, but it still looks gaudy. Advantage iPhone 5.
Conclusion: The Winner: The SGS3 gets four points and the iPhone 5 gets three. The S3 got its points for display, memory, connectivity and processor. The iPhone 5 won on camera, design and dimensions. The phones drew on battery life and OS.
no surprise here.
I'm pretty sure that the iPhone gpu and CPU are more powerful. Having more cores barely means anything because most smart phone task aren't multi threaded like computer tasks. With gaming unless you have a tegra 3 quad core there are sadly no games that take advantage of the quad core exynos 4412 or the s4 pro. IPhone gaming will definitely be better also because it gets so much attention cuz its the only iOS phone

Cube is well known in China for its cost-efficient digital products, since its entrance into the android tablet market in 2010, it has published dozens of MID products, among which there are U9GT, U9GT2, U30GT. Most of its products have done quite well in the Chinese market.

U9GT3 is a rather wordy successor to the popular U9GT and U9GT2, it is Cube’s sixth dual core android tablet after U30GT(Pea), U20GT(Wall-nut), U30mini, U19GT(Sunflower), U23GT(Snow Pea), U9GT4, and is named “Cherry” after the explosive role in the famous PopCap Game “Plants vs Zombies”. Unlike most android tablets which use WSVGA or WXGA displays, Cherry has a very different 8 inch XGA IPS display that is very nice for web-browsing and E-book reading. I recently received the 127USD device for product review, and I am now sharing what I’ve found with you guys.
1.Design
Cherry’s front and back design is quite similar to that of iPad2, an XGA IPS display surrounded by bezel which comes in either white or black, a silver battery cover to its back, except it is much smaller in size (200mm*155mm*9.59mm).
The most noticeable difference comes from its side design, which adopts a “razor sharp” concept that allows the thinnest part of the device to be as slim as 1mm.
However, “razor” proves to be little more than just a concept, the actual body depth of this tablet is 9.59mm, which is a shade slimmer than Galaxy Tab 2 P5100 (9.7mm), but feels quite porkier than Galaxy Tab 8.9 (8.6mm) and the super slim iPad Mini (7.1mm).
2.Features
Cherry offers a feature set that is quite similar to its rivalry products. The first thing you will notice is the XGA IPS display screen, which offers great vibrant colors and desirable brightness.
Whether watching videos, surfing the web or using android applications, the screen can provide a user experience that is remarkably like using a full-sized computer.
While I expected to see notable pixilation in full screen, the reality is that the image remains sharp with great color saturation.
Although the 4:3 display isn’t recommended as a video player, one of the selling points for it is E-reading, the 8 inch screen offers as much as 35% more vision field than 7 inch screens.
Unfortunately, cherry doesn’t have a rear camera, and the 0.3 mega-pixel is okay, though far from ideal for video chatting through QQ or Skype. The device offers internet access through Wifi only, and Cube doesn’t seem interested in making a cellular version of it.
U9GT3 has 16GB internal storage, which is quite generous in comparison with lots of other Chinese tablets which only provide 8GB storage. And a TF card slot which supports cards up to 16GB could accommodate the majority of users.
Besides, Cherry also offers on its body a charging port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a reset hole, a micro USB data port, a speaker gate, a power/standby switch as well as a volume rocker. But according to my experience, the data port isn’t that scientifically designed, the wire can go off the tablet very easily. Also the speaker is quite low in volume, which is quite common in Chinese tablet products from MP4-turned-tablet-manufacturers. And unlike most dual core tablets made in China, Cherry doesn’t have an HDMI port, possibly due to its low price.
3.User Interface
Cherry ships with not the latest version, but the most mature version of Android: Ice Cream Sandwich, and adopts a WIN8-like user interface that is exquisitely designed by Cube, it offers five home screens including a Start home screen, a social networking home screen, a gaming app home screen, an office app home screen, and a home screen of other favorite applications. Even the application drawer has been designed very metro-like, and all the shortcuts and widgets will change to cubes once they are dragged onto the home screens to fit the screen interface.
At the bottom of the screen, you'll find a permanent control bar that includes virtual back and home buttons, as well as an icon that brings up a list of open apps, which can be closed with a swipe to the right.
Meanwhile, tapping the lower right part of the screen (with the clock, Wi-Fi, and battery indicators) brings up the notifications box, which includes quick controls for turning on/off Wi-Fi, quiet, and screen rotation lock, among other features, plus you can access the brightness setting on the fly and tap into the full Settings menu.
4.Hardware
As is mentioned above, Cherry has an XGA IPS display to its front which offers vibrant colors and great brightness.
At the heart of the device, Cube has provided a peppy Rockchip RK3066 Dual core 1.6G processor (GPU: [email protected]) and 1GB DDR3 RAM. Although it does not blow anybody out of the water as many tablets have already come to the era of quad-core processor and 2GB RAM, it still provides plenty of power to run the device smoothly over a wide variety of applications.
According to numerous benchmark tests, Cherry did better than most dual core android phones and tablets. What should also be noted is that in the Quadrant Benchmark test, Cherry has beaten Transformer Prime in test scores.
5.Battery Life
Cherry features a 4500mAh Li-Polymer battery that offers about 8 hours of on-Screen usage on a charge, Actual battery life will, of course, depend on how we use the tablet. and variables like high brightness and heavy downloads or streaming will zap the battery a little quicker, but we found it comparable to seven-inch competitors. According to my test, Cherry offers 6.5 hours of video playback (50% screen brightness, Wifi off, full volume), better than most of its rivalry products.
Unfortunately, Cherry doesn’t support battery charging under shutdown state, but it doesn’t necessarily result in low charging efficiency, a full charge only takes 3-3.5 hours, while the charging input is 5V-2A.
6.Internet and Connectivity
Tablets are popular choices for sofa surfers, allowing for large screen browsing without the hassle, heat or weight of a laptop. The XGA IPS Screen makes Cherry even more of a surfer favorite, 4:3 display shows much more webpage content than similar sized wide-screen devices.
But here also lies the biggest issue of Cherry: the Wifi connectivity of the device is quite poor due to its metal back cover.
According to my test, cherry’s data reception is almost as good as Galaxy Tab8.9 while it is placed closely to the signal source (within s meters) without strong signal blockers, and thanks to its better processor, it performed even better than Tab on web browsing.
Yet once it is placed 5 meters and a wall away from Wifi tethering, its data reception is much poorer than that of Samsung Galaxy Tab.
A stock Android browser and a UCWEB browser come preinstalled on Cherry, both offering up tabbed browsing, offline reading and thumb-nailed bookmarks which can be synced to your Google or Sina account.
7.Video Playback
RK3066 is arguably the best processor for video fans, it supports almost all video formats to at least 1080P. Hardware decoding of all kinds of videos is also the key strength of this China-based Chip Maker in comparison with industry leaders such as Samsung, QUALCOMM, and Texas Instrument.
In my test, Cherry has no problem playing any Full HD video, no matter what format it is. The only problem is that with the 4:3 display, a great percentage of the screen will be wasted during video playbacks as most videos come in widescreen.
8.E-reading
As is mentioned earlier, Cherry is born for E-reading fans, while B&N’s Nook tablets and Amazon’s Kindle Fires all bundled with wild screens and are not ideal for browsing and E-book reading. Cherry, on the other hand, provides an 8 inch XGA screen which is quite comfortable for readers. IPS display’s brightness and vibrant colors also contributes to my joyful experience reading with Cherry.
9.Gaming
The Dual core Processor Cherry embodies is powered by Mali-400MP4 as its GPU, the same with Samsung’s famous Exynos 4410 and Exynos 4412, and can be seen as a guarantee for high performance and great compatibility for gaming. According to my actual test, Cherry doesn’t disappoint, almost all games can be played smoothly on it.
10.Verdict
Priced at $127, Cube U9GT3 is one of the best android devices below $150. The tablet is solidly built and it doesn’t look cheap by any standard. Similar to most tablets made in China, Cherry has lots of desirable aspects, but also many defects.
We Liked:
The 8 inch XGA IPS display is one of the biggest talking points on Cherry, which is ideal for E-reading and browsing;
The tablet adopts a solid build and is quite well made, showing no cheapness at all;
The delicately designed Metro UI is also a plus for this tablet, and allows Cherry to stand out from its competitors;
The powerful RK3066 dual core processor with Mali-400MP4 guarantees Cherry’s high performance on everything from video playback to gaming;
@$127, it is one of the most cost-efficient devices on the market.
We disliked:
Wifi Connectivity is Cherry’s Achilles' heel: data reception can be much poorer than other internet devices while there are signal blockers;
At 470 grams, it is notably heavier than most similar sized tablets, mainly due to its metal back cover;
Battery life is notably shorter than market leaders such as Galaxy Tab and Nexus 7.
Below is the official press statement i got from Samsung this morning during the unpacked ceremony. This is the best i could compile in a single post without making it looks too messy because there's a lot of specification table inside.

At Samsung we’ll never stop pursuing innovation conceived by people, so we can inspire them in return.”
Meaningful Moments - Gives Greater Enjoyment
A rich life is one that’s filled with meaningful moments and the GALAXY S 4 captures and shares those special moments. The GALAXY S 4 has the world’s first Full HD Super AMOLED display to showcase images at their very best. Its 5-inch large screen has 441ppi for stunning viewing quality. Users can select 8 different ways to combine the two photos taken by the front camera and the rear camera. At the same time, the ‘Dual Video Call’ function enables you to make and receive a video call with friends and family while showing what you are looking at during the call.
The camera functionality extends beyond Dual Camera, as the device is also equipped with 12 outstanding shooting modes including ‘Drama Shot’, which allows you to see all the action in one continuous time-lapse, and ‘Sound & Shot’, which uniquely stores sound and voice together as the picture is taken so those special moments are captured in the truest form imaginable, exactly as they happened.
These meaningful moments can also now automatically be stored in a photo album, with the new ‘Story Album’ function. Photos taken by the GALAXY S 4 are automatically gathered and sorted out according to your timeline, geo-tagging information, or a specific event to create a photo album. These unique story albums can be ordered and delivered as an offline photo album through a new partnership with Blurb*, so you can keep those precious moments safe to look at and share time and time again.
True Connections – Brings People Together
Samsung GALAXY S 4 enables true connections with the people in our lives. It is more than a personal device that can be enjoyed by one user - it makes the most of our relationships allowing us to easily share and experience many of life’s pleasures together with family and friends, wherever you are.
With its ‘Group Play’ function, users can enjoy music, photos, documents and games with those around them without even requiring a Wi-Fi AP or cellular signal. This innovative feature enables users to connect directly with others to share, play and co-create content and entertainment instantly. Its ‘Share Music’ option allows users to have the same song playing on multiple phones in sync to create the best party atmosphere.
The GALAXY S 4 brings all people closer together by breaking down language barriers. It makes international travel a joy, with ‘S Translator’ which provides instant translation, using text or voice translation on applications including email, text message and ChatON. This instant translation is possible both from speech to text and text to speech and ensures that you can rely on the correct information whilst abroad.
The GALAXY S 4 supports HSPA+42 Mbps and 4G LTE which means wherever you are in the world, you can rely on perfect connectivity. Especially, the LTE version supports up to 6 different band sets which allows it to function in most LTE coverage areas as well as enabling global LTE roaming. Furthermore, TDD/FDD LTE Dual Mode version will be introduced later this year.
Effortless Experience - Makes Things More Convenient
In today’s world, we are all looking for smart ways to make life easier and less stressful. The GALAXY S 4 ensures that tasks are effortless with innovative features that detect your face, voice and motions to enable screen control with no need for finger touch activation.
‘Samsung Smart Pause’ enables you to control the screen by where you look. When you are watching a video, the video pauses when you look away then it starts right up again when you are back. ‘Samsung Smart Scroll’ allows you to scroll the browser or emails up and down without touching the screen. It recognizes your face looking at the screen and movement of your wrist and then scroll the pages up or down accordingly.
‘Air View’ allows users to hover with their fingers to preview the content of an email, S Planner, image gallery or video without having to open it. You can even see a magnified view on the internet browser, or a phone number saved in the speed dial on the keypad. With ‘Air Gesture’, you can change the music track, scroll up and down a web page, or accept a call with a wave of your hand.
With ‘S VoiceTM Drive’ you can activate commands via voice control for optimization when driving. Once connected with a car Bluetooth, the phone automatically turns into driving mode converting text to speech so you can easily and safely check messages with no need to look at the screen.
‘Samsung Optical Reader’ makes life yet more effortless, by automatically recognising text, a business card or QR code information, and providing useful functions such as translation, call, text message and search.
At home, using ‘Samsung WatchON’, the GALAXY S 4 will transform into an IR remote to control your home entertainment system including TV, set-top box, DVD player and even air conditioner. In addition, you can enjoy various content including live TV, cable TV and VOD based on the rich information provided by EPG (Electronic Program Guide).
Empowered Living - Takes Care Of Your Health and Quality of Life
The GALAXY S 4 empowers your life by keeping you up-to-date with health and wellbeing information using the new ‘S Health’ software. The combination of sensors built within the device systematically and automatically monitors your health, surroundings and so much more to help improve your quality of life. Also, users can easily check their health conditions using food diary, exercise diary and sleep monitor to stay fit and healthy. (Certain functions are enabled by specific accessories.)
To further protect your wellbeing, ‘Samsung Adapt Display’ provides an optimal viewing experience, customised for each type of application, and ‘Samsung Adapt Sound’ offers an optimal level and type of sound, personalised for each user, to make the most out of life.

This is now officially the most powerful mobile device on the planet. It has a PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU, but is clocked a 533mhz (normal core clock 233mhz) at this speed, it's on par if not faster than the ipad 4!

Eh. Different tastes and all...
Personally, I like a mixture of both BUT, I do favor looks more than internal components. The latter is exciting at first but in the long run, the look of the phone is what's going to be always in my face.
I loved the S2 look, it was perfect for me. S3 just went fugly. S4 looks like S3 so yeah, not my cuppa tea. May look for another phone to toy around with this year.

Why the differing processors per market? International version to have the 8 core while US one with the Qualcom 600. Anyone know why?

Its because the 8 core doesn't support 4G LTE in America, and Qualcom 600 does. Or opposit...

Haha, yeah, 1080p, yummy! Love the new design aswell. Its the S3, but with some nice improvements, like the colour (black myst wootwoot), and the aluminium bar on the side just finishes this perfect design. I am impressed.
Some thoughts about S IV and S III
I watched unpacked live stream for a while, at least Samsung did huge effort for marketing, commercial and entertainment aspect. If I'd have GS2 or relevant model, I'd probably get S IV. In other hand while having S III, the most interesting in my case would be bigger RAM, better camera and new camera/recording options.
Ofc if I'd be able to sell my current one for some "foolish" with remarkable price tag, like 500 EUR (~650 USD), then I'll probably would get that one, just for having a bit better one and again latest flagship model.
It will be a great device if they manage to sell according to LG Nexus 4 Price

The American version isn't going to be as powerful as the international version & not because of the CPU but because of the GPU! PowerVR 544mp3 is way better than Andrino 320.

So is US getting the octa core one or the quad core one? Like last time, i do not want to compromise on cores, if its needed or not, i don't care.

From what I have read USA = Snapdragon 600 Quad Core, Elsewhere = Octa-core Exynos
it seem that all other lte markets in europe like uk germany an soo will get snapdragon 600 too..octa eill be only 3g markets..
Yeah I just confirmed we're only getting the 16gb Snapdragon 600 version here in Denmark. Most other European countries as well, I suppose. SO wait for a Tegra 4 or Snapdragon 800 device? (I know discussed so much before)
question is who is getting octa than? lol
Re: Samsung Galaxy S 4 Specification [Press Statement]
If the main reasoning is LTE, if you have LTE in your country, chances are that you're getting the Snapdragon 600, though I wish it was the 800. If LTE isn't broadly deployed, you're probably going to get the Exynos.
I was looking forward to the Exynos. I don't understand why they couldn't put a separate LTE radio chip in with the Exynos SoC.
And even if that IS the reason, I don't see why Samsung would even bother with the Exynos in the phone at all, considering that LTE is popping up all over the place.
I'd like to see a map showing which countries have LTE and the percentage of deployment of LTE in those specific countries.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S 4 Specification [Press Statement]
If you guys want the Octa core Exynos then wait for the Note 3 by then they would have found out how to put 4gLTE on the Octa. Just remember that Samsung doesn't give out Exynos source so getting Cyanogen on it would be harder I think with the Exynos CPU instead of Qualcomm snapdragon 600

its confusing because all articles are 100% sure that exynos has LTE chip...
i am for exynos only because of gpu.. that thing is powerful..annd aderno 320 is below par i think...
