Bought a Rooted Charge. A lot of problems. - Verizon Droid Charge

So i bought this rooted droid charge a couple of month ago from Craigslist.
It's having a lot of issues. sometimes when i make phone calls, it will just close. When in Google Maps, it crashes.
Recently, verizon released the gingerbread upgrade. but i am unable to get it because i am rooted.
I am on 2.3.4. See attached.
Can someone help me get to the latest and greatest firmware to resolve all these issues.
Also the phone is very very slow. I am so sick and tired of this phone.
thank you so much for your help.

You have a couple choices. If you want any kind of help from Verizon you'll need to go back to stock. The best way (that I know of) to do this is to flash the stock EE4 build, and then let the phone update itself to EP4. If there is actually something wrong with the phone, you have a good chance of getting a free replacement phone from Verizon even though you didn't buy it direct.

If you want to upgrade and stay on a rooted/tweaked build, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365376
My strong suggestion is that you go back to stock, and see if it solves your problems. The EP4 build is really nice; probably the best stock build I've seen for any Verizon phone yet. If that is working for you, its still fairly easy to root & CWM that build so you can extend the capabilities a bit. Good luck!

EP1F is quite old and was not a stable release. I'd recommend this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406951
It's a debloated and nicely themed stock based ROM with a lot of tweaks applied. It's really quick...by far the smoothest ROM I've used on this phone. If you use the Odin with the kernel, you will get the latest radios and the latest kernel. This is based on the same OS version that Verizon/Samsung is currently pushing out.

Thanks for your reply.
I have talked to verizon and was told I couldn't get a replacement if I didn't get the phone from them directly.
the reason I would want to stay rooted is because i want the free tethering, but the wi-fi tether app doesn't work too well recently so I was using pdanet, which is no rooting required.
Do you know if I stay rooted and get the upgraded as suggested by you, the wi-fi tethering works?
At this point, I would really just want the phone to work. so I am really debating between stock or rooted.

Thanks, I would probably go for this "[Ep4D][Rom][Cwm][Odin]TweakStock v1.0"
But looking from the instructions, I am very confused. I am new to this ODIN thingy.
I guess what I am asking if step by step.
Where do I get ODIN software? what is "CWM"?
There are so many rom links, I don't know which one to pick, it's like a 3rd world language to me...

Verizon will replace it with a refurb, I've done it before with phones I've bought off Craigslist. The phone is a Verizon product, and regardless of where you got it , it was originally purchased from them. The tech you talked to was just giving you their uneducated opinion.

Try this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580
It has download links to Odin and instructions on how to use it. Odin is a low level flash utility for Samsung phones. The key thing to keep in mind is that you should only use the PDA button and never the PHONE button. You can also use the PIT button if you have the PIT file, but you can generally leave it alone unless instructed to use it.
CWM is a custom recovery. It is flashed in Odin. You can think of it as a higher level flash utility that lives on your phone. You can do most of what you can do with Odin with it, but you generally won't see radios flashable in it (with some exception), and you don't have to connect to your computer to use it. Generally, I use Odin to get to the latest base OS with radios, and then from there, you can use CWM to flash between roms without a computer. CWM also lets you do data and cache wipes, full phone backups, and a few other things from your phone.
You can get CWM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112804

Oh i see. there are two options to load the custom rom. I will try out the ODIN. and will report back.
BTW, do you guys use free wi-fi tethering? does it work well?

Theres been a release of the new ginger bread in odin format. Just flash that and use terminal to unroot.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App

just loaded "TweakStock v1.0 + experimental repacked EP4D kernel"
already feeling better
how do i get free wi-fi tether? do you have a link?
thanks.

People (including me) have had the best luck with this: http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...tail?name=wifi_tether_v3_0-pre12.apk&can=4&q=
After you install it, immediately reboot. After it reboots, run the app and in settings, Change Device-Profile to Samsung Fascinate, and Change Setup-Method to Softap for Samsung (master).

^^^THIS.
Even though you'll see newer versions of the WiFi Tether app, use the link that shrike1978 has posted. it's the "pre12" version and works best for the Charge hands down.

I forgot to backup my data, what do you guys use to back up and restore when trying out new ROM?
Also, the power control widget doesn't work anymore, it's a blank bar with 5 slots, but nothing shown..

I use Titanium Backup. It's one of the apps that should pretty much be in every rooter's toolbox. The free version lets you batch backup apps and data, but you have to restore one at a time in interactive mode. The pay version adds the ability to batch restore everything in an automatic mode. Some people like My Backup Pro, but I never got it to work right.
I don't use power control, so that's not something I can answer to from personal experience, but I think I've heard people talk about needing a reboot to work right once you add them.

Yes thank you! Finally a configuration that doesn't need a restart of the phone to work the second time

Okay, wi-fi tethering works great. The power control also works after reboot.
I did purchased the Titanium Backup Pro prior to upgrade, and also did a backup. and now I reloaded the app, but unable to see the shortcut, nor open it.
does the backup go to the cloud? Titanium's servers or was it store in my micro sd card?
Thanks guy for the great advice.

TiBu stores the backup to SD. It should survive wipes and flashes unless you partition or wipe the card.

Not only that, but you're also pulling 4G speeds on tether. All other versions top out at 3G speed for whatever reason.

You can create a Dropbox account for free with 2GB of storage included. Then you can tell TiBU to sync with Dropbox. This way, if you do wipe your SD or if it corrupts or something, you only need to copy the TiBU folder back to the SD and all of your data is saved. This is how I ensure redundancy of my own backups.

Dropbox tip is great.
Do you guys already enable your LTE? for me, I turn it off most of time unless i browser the internet.
because i found that leaving LTE on drain the battery very fast.

You're right. You'll save a lot of battery by disabling LTE until you need to use it.

Wifi Tether (any fixes)?

I'm obviously new to this so bare with me.
I just rooted my Sprint HTC Hero and the first thing I would like to do is use it to tether. I've tried both versions of Android_wifi_tether (1.52, 1.6) but have had no luck in getting it functional. Basically; It broadcasts the signal (I'm at work so the only way to test it was with a Macbook) just fine. The Macbook even connects to it and my phone shows "3KB down 7.8KB up" meaning it detected something has connected. Once that happens nothing else works. The Macbook indicates it has no internet connection.
I was wondering if anyone has been able to get this to work? I'm a little hesitant on installing a custom ROM because it seems like a lot of work and I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to Linux.
Also, can my phone still be updated or is that still unkown? If I install a root app and the update kills root does that mean I lose it entirely or just for anything I try to install post update?
As a side note: Someone should make a post with step by step guides to follow. What I mean by this is put the guides in chronological order.
1) Root your phone (guide link)
2) Run Nandroid backup (guide link)
3) etc.
Anyway, really appreciate the work! This is exciting.

Currently the only phones that have wifi tethering working are the ones who installed MoDaCo's ROM...something in there is configured differently to allow it to work.

How functional is the ROM?
The one thing I'm scared of is that if I install a ROM I'll be dependent on this community to make future things work?
I mean, can you still access the Market? What about future updates? Will applications I purchased already still be available?
Like I said, I'm still fairly noobish.

No sweat! If you look at my join date and postcount, you can see I'm not exactly the veteran around here either.
The MoDaCo ROM doesn't modify very much yet...just adds functionality (it's not the heavily optimized kernel that the GSM users have for example). I'm finding it fairly stable...there's a few quirks but those have fixes pretty easily found so far.
I can still purchase from the market...the stuff you purchased already is tied to your google account, not your phone. I bought Docs2Go before I rooted and flashed and I was able to redownload and install without any hassle or added cost.
On a custom ROM, future updates do depend on the person who is building the ROM. However, MoDaCo has proven pretty reliable thus far in keeping up with releases so it's a bit of a trust thing, do you trust MoDaCo to continue that trend or would you rather place your trust in the manufacturer? (It's a preference thing and willingness to risk either way).
The upside is that once you root to a recovery image (Not even changing your OS), you can take a Nandroid backup of your phone, which is an image you can drop back on there to get back to stock/manufacturer spec (as if you never left).
Any changes to your phone since the backup will not show up but that's kindof the risk.

This is somewhat confusing for me. My phone is currently rooted. If I restore it factory default will it still be rooted?
If not,
Then should I restore to factory default first, take a Nandroid back up (this looks difficult), then root my phone?
The recovery image is basically replacing the "Factory reset" image, right?

Ah ok...the recovery image is like a second mini OS you are booting into that has menu options and specializes in updating your phone with a custom ROM, running Nandroid for backups, and enabling you to mount your SDCard to your computer, so installing that doesn't actually do anything to your phone's running OS.
Nandoid takes a backup of the phone's OS (the one you use every day) as it is right now. It places the backup onto your sdcard under a folder called "nandroid" (where you can take a copy of it and put it on your computer to be safe). So whenever you Nandroid your phone, it's taking a snapshot of how your phone is currently configured (the whole thing) and if you restore from that three weeks from now after doing a bunch of things...it restores to the phone as if you hadn't done anything to it in those three weeks.
So to make an example: if you take a backup of your phone right now (rooted, right?) and then you do a bunch of things to it...then restore from that backup, it's as if you didn't do any of those things you did since the backup (but it will still be rooted since you backed up a rooted phone).
Second Example: If you nandroid your phone when it's running MoDaCo's ROM...when you restore it, it will be running MoDaCo's rom and configured however it was configured then.
I wouldn't worry about trying to get to factory default first...HTC has an official utility that can get you back to the state your phone was in when you first openned it out of the box. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622)

[Q] Stuck at Red (Stink) Eye

Need anybody's help!
I rooted back in June, so here's what I had (from memory),
PBJ kernel, voodoo lagfix, and CWM recovery (might be old).
Anyway, I edited the secgps.conf in another post about fixing GPS. I made
a back-up of the original. Anyway, in the other post, he states to reboot,
then it will take awhile but after the first GPS lock, it should work faster.
Well...I rebooted, and it was still way-off...even worse than before. After 10 minutes, I rebooted...then got stuck with the Red Eye at boot.
I took out the battery, plugged back in, etc. Still stuck at Red Eye...even plugged into outlet...letting it go...still that way for over an hour.
Any method of getting in, and just replacing the secgps.conf with the original, then try rebooting? What are my options? Don't want to wipe out everything, especially if I have the voodoo lagfix?
Help! Thanks in advance,
Sara :$

well if it won't boot you can't replace the original file, unless you know about ADB and how to use it... you may need to go back to stock with the PIT file and start over, its not a huge deal and doesn't take long plus the roms out now are way better than the older ones
Dear anoninja118,
I actually let the phone sit for an 3 hours while I worked...it finally got through boot.
However, I thought I had lost root... most of my apps were gone...bloatware came back that I had frozen.... getting force closures on all the apps.
I went into ADB and I still have root (although Superuser app shows no listing ).
I put back that original GPS file rebooted...but nothing..things remained the same as previously stated.
All my files are all intact, have CWM, but it states no voodoo lagfix. Any ideas on how to repair? Can I just switch to another ROM? Keep my files/data?
Thanks,
Sara

well what rom were you running? you could just reflash it (shouldn't need to wipe) to return it to 'normal'... also if root was lost I can upload superuser.apk, just flash it and you'll get root back

Yikes...being new to all this stuff, and I did it a few months back, I don't believe I flashed a ROM. I think I did jt1134's kernel (Root / Voodoo Lagfix / CWM Recovery), then I might flashed the PBJ kernel that was available at that time.
Ironically, I've been having many issues with bluetooth and GPS problems recently, and heard that there was a new Gingerbread update. I wanted to wait for the official release, then have one of the programmer gods make a new kernel/ROM. I am not ready to jump to GB yet, and I want to keep all my files. I backed-up many of my apps with Titanium back-up, and saved via DropBox.
Anyway, I thought about reflashing...but if I do the jt1134 scenario...it's via Odin..won't that erase everything. I guess all my stuff is on the SD card, right?
Thanks so much for helping out a damsel in distress,
Sara

yes any Odin flash will wipe all data thats not backed up, if you use titanium backup for apps, export a contact list to your sd card that you can import later and you should be fine you'll just lose settings and things like login info for apps which you will have to set up again after... and yes you could do jt1134's method again or you could just flash debloated rooted stock EE4 in CWM (which will be exactly like what you're using) as well as one of the newer kernels, if you want to go the Odin route I would suggest Gummy FE 2.0 or Humble 1.6 as they are both very stable and tweakable/themeable plus come with all the goodies like root, CWM, custom rom and kernel (however if you wiped data and both caches in CWM you could also just flash the rom .zips right over what you're using instead)
Thanks for helping again. So, if I understand correctly, I could use CWM to get debloated rooted stock EE4, and I would still have my data?
Sorry I got confused with "(however if you wiped data and both caches in CWM you could also just flash the rom .zips right over what you're using instead)". So instead of Odin, I could just use CWM with wipe data and cache to flash a new ROM, correct?
That's what confuses me...when to use CWM and when to use Odin? Oh, should I update to the newest CWM (I hope that's easy) first?
Thanks so much...hate to bug you on the weekend, but I need to get this fixed before Monday for work!

you can use either one CWM or Odin, unfortunately you will lose data no matter what... I only said that you could use CWM instead since you already have it and it might be a little easier that way, but both ways will work

Annoying problem after update to gingerbread

i updated my phone a week ago to the latest update; 2.3.6.
Here's the problem:
-everytime i open my messages or the dial pad, it closes on me instantly. Like sometimes, when i open my messages, it goes to my last conversation. for the dial pad, everytime i dial a number in, after the first three numbers, it closes on me and brings me back to the home page.
-i cannot go past 145 words texting. if i do, the message does not send and says fail. sometimes when it says fail, it actually sends though. weird bug/problem...
-the phone has become REALLY slow ever since the update.
thank you!
~Calvin
You need to give the people here more information to get help. To start with - are you rooted? And how did you do this update (e.g., via Kies Mini)?
It is a know issue about text if you are on kg6 modem but kg4 works great.

The symptoms you give are similar to those if you restored system data using TitaniumBackup or similar (other than a handful of the critical things that TiBackup marks in green). GB system data is generally incompatible with ICS system data.
I made some notes on my migration that might be helpful.
I switched (back) to KG4 modem since the short text limitation of the "official Samsung modem" annoys me as well.

i shouldn't have rooted my phone or updated it lmfao. i don't understand this, sorry to say. i'm a loss child haha.
You can fix the long SMS sending issue by either switching over to 2G/GSM or by flashing a different modem (search the dev forum). Anything KI3 or earlier will work. As for the dialer/messaging apps force closing, you can fix that temporarily by rebooting the phone, but the only real fix to that is either to go back to Froyo or flash a custom ROM. (CyanogenMod is pretty nice!)
It's a shame that Samsung made their official Gingerbread release so buggy...

Kies Mini has been known to do weird things sometimes - you may have had a bad experience with it yourself. At this point, you have several options:
1) Suffer with this crap version of GB.
2) Try Bryan's Heimdall One-Click to go back to full KJ6 stock (unrooted) or stock with a custom kernel (root). You can find these at the top of the Development section.
3) Try one of the nice custom GB or ICS ROMs. You need root - look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V/Rooting
In any case, you should read the Wiki, and then read it again, before proceeding.
An alternative to running a One-Click, which I think is a bit complicated for just rooting and getting to a custom ROM, I'd suggest using SuperOneClick. It's completely automatic, just plug it in and push root. Then install SGS Kernel Flasher and flash a *kernel* with CWM (like AntonX's or bhundeven's kj6). From there, you can flash any GB ROM pretty easily. I think Lumin's guide is an excellent resource: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470716
thank you guys! really appreciate the help!

Back to stock..

My maps gps lock got totally f*cked by synergy 1.7 so it was suggested to go back to stock and reroot since flashing new rom from clean wipe did not work.
A lot of links and methods are out of date, so I was wondering what the best way to get back to stock at this point.
I have the latest odin on my computer, I guess I'm looking for the most recent or most reliable stock image to flash.
Thanks

I think a lot of people recommend the root66 stock..... But I'd try noSympathy's image

I'm rooting immediately after so whatever is a proven version will make me happy

They're both rooted so no need to do after. Both are tried and true, noSympathy's is based off the last OTA but some people like to start from scratch so that would be root66.

I want to get back to unrooted stock.
I can't seem to locate the route66 stock image

It's up to you but it's just more work to go unrooted then root yourself. Check the development threat there maybe an un rooted image there

My main reason to flash stock was I was told that would be the only way to restore my faulty gps lock.
Do you think flashing a stock rooted image would do the same for me? Or should I flash unrooted image then start fresh? Time is not a concern, im patient

Flash back to stock then root. Click link in sig.
i tried this......still having the same issue, switched from CM10 back to stock and had issues with my GPS being way off, like by 3300 meters off haha.....so flashed back to stock, still had the issue, so i used the rooted stock image and flashed that and i'm still off by about over 2k meters.....don't use my navigation or maps all that much but when i do need it i'll have a bit of an issue lol
I had issues with my gps for a few days. If was real flaky but got better with synergy 1.5. I have since move to 1.6 with a fresh install and am still okay. Check out a app called gps status. See if you can see any gps satellites. Maybe in that app clear your agps state in tools. Then if that doesn't work try to download gps assistance with the same app in the same settings. Make sure your out side for this stuff with your gps. It's probably not gonna hit ya sitting on the couch.

and used this method for rooting:

my gps doesnt work at all
After Odin back to stock, non rooted image my GPS is fixed.
Now on CM10, loving it. Not sure if I'll ever try synergy again bc of that nightmare situation.
I use my gps pretty much all day. I needz it

New AOKP JB issue with radio
Well I am trying to get something fixed and I am going through a complete restore to do this.
But just so you are aware the new AOKP JB release will kill your data. I learned a hard lesson with this when trying to recover and nandroid back to my previous rom. It killed my data completely and would not allow me to do anything with data in any rom. I used the root66 stock rom in hopes it would work, and that didnt even solve the issue.
Right now I am restoring a factory image through kies and seeing if that will do what I need. If it does, I am sticking with stock roms for awhile until AOSP roms have more time to develope with less bugs.

It sounds like you may have lost your IMEI or MEID. I hope you made a backup with QPST.

Well it turns out I still had my imei present on my phone and even after a factory reset like I did wit kies it still didnt work. Initially I wasnt able to get past the activation screen on the root66 rom, but I was able to with the stock factory image from kies in which case this allowed me to follow the steps in this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1838791
Once I did that my phone rebooted and everything came back as it was never gone, well except for all of my data on the internal sd card, but that is to be expected.
After 2 hours of going through numerous steps I finally found a fix, mind you not the most simple of fixes, but a fix none the less.
I think I am just going to stay stock for awhile like I mentioned and wait for the OTA that comes out in 2014 lol, unless in review of AOSP roms the issues present now are gone after sometime.
Tks
Nice. Tks
Gps works like a champ on beans!
Gps seems to work substantially better on cm10 than on stock....ran the GPS test and i locked onto 14/19 satellites.
Beamed via NFC through the local store to the internet from my SGS3.

Cant connect to google services.

Well, strange issue here that I'm going crazy over. Recently I've rooted and such but run stock Rom on my one s. I downloaded a google play patcher and freedom apks to check them out and suddenly lost connection whenever I would open google play store so I knew right away it was a result of those apks. I uninstalled them and tried again with no luck. I then reinstalled google play store apk and cleared all the data/cache with still no results. At this point I decided to back up my important apps via titanium backup and did a complete factory reset. Setting my phone back up it asked me for my google account to synch contacts and such. Full signal 4g and full signal WiFi both fail to connect to google. Aside from trying to flash a new Rom and try I'm at a loss. I don't want to use a custom Rom I only want root access on my phone. Does anyone know how I can fix this ? I know the google patcher and freedom jacked my phone up and I do intend to avoid them for good now. Thanks.

Reset wont work if the patcher patched an apk. If you got TWRP or CWM you could try flashing gapps to see if that works.
Thanks for the quick reply ill try to figure it out. Would gapps be on already or do I have to go find it somewhere?

Get gapps here and make sure you get the right one.
Thanks again but how do you determine which one? I run stock Rom. Those appear to be for cyanogenmo. Would I need to flash that beforehand? I'm not experienced really in doing any of this and I know its not your problem so I really am quite thankful for the assistance. The only thing I've done is unlock bootloader, flashed TWRP and installed superuser. Flashing other rims I wanted to avoid as I'm content with the stock and didn't want to move away from the familiar. If its the only way to recover my google access then ill have to though I guess.

If its 4.0.4 then use the one for CM9 and if its 4.1.1 then you want the CM10. If that don't work and don't want custom rom the you need a RUU to get it fully stock.
Well phone told me 4.0.4 so ill give it a try. Thanks again, ill report back if it worked.
Well, I downloaded, booted recovery, flashed it, rebooted and now all the google apps just force close so I can't even get the connection error. I'll try flashing a Rom later or the ruu. If anyone has any ideas much appreciated.
Did you clean cache and dalvik-cache after you flashed it? You also need to clear the data for the google apps (done in settings -> apps in the phone) alt. factory reset it.

Yup already done. Both actually, I cleared the data/cache in the settings and I did a factory reset twice. No luck. I'm going to attempt flashing a custom ROM if I can find one that is actually decent but most appear to have issues with WiFi or something that'd drive me nuts. flash the partition patch is recommended like with the viper but after readying 20 pages I have no idea still wth they're talking about.
As far as I can work out, it seems the wifi issues is mainly with t-mo devices. Ive never had any wifi issues on mine with hboot 1.14.
I have a TmoUS HTC ONE S S4. Not entirely sure what hboot is. Like I said i'm still kinda new but I did read enough to see that there's WiFi issues so I don't want to push it. Ive been reading through all the ICS ROMS and half seem to be outdated and broken.
If you want an ICS rom, go with ViperS 1.2.1. Great rom
hboot is listed in the bootloader.
Viper is the rom that's apparently having wifi issues from what I read where it says to flash the partition or whatever and I couldn't find out what they were talking about. I'm checking out some JB rom now called jellybam, if I can manage to install it hopefully it works out. As for the hboot thing still no idea lol I'm honestly not going to try to figure it out. I simply want my phone with root access and working google again I don't want a custom rom at all but I apparently have no choice

Try Viper 1.2.1 and if you have issue then there is a TrickDroid thats T-Mobile base so it should be fine there.
I've successfully flashed Viper 2.0 and have access to google again now finally. Only issue is that sine I had the 4.04 update my wifi no longer works so I have to figure out how to fix that. There's flashing of something but I have no idea what he was talking about as he simply said that and provided no links or explanations.

You can't fix it without upgrading to JB which you can't yet or downgrade the Hboot, so you better off trying Viper 1.2.1 and see how that goes for wifi.
xD exactly the reason I didn't want a non-stock ROM lol Honestly after the headache I'm just going to keep what I have. I thought the H signal was pretty much the G network but it turns out that it's fast like my normal 4G which it keeps bouncing between 3G and H. Makes no sense to me but as long as i'm not down in the basement I should have 4G signal. All this flashing and having to reinstall everything and update blah blah just isn't worth the trouble and effort. I have half the mind to revert back to stock rom and just reroot and leave it there hopefully working.

I think this is the best time to do it since you not settled with it yet and I like I said there is T-Mobile TrickDroid so you wont even lose wifi calling and also pretty much stock.
For some reason that didn't work either. I relocked bootloader, reflashed stock Rom and rerooted. Everything works again, thanks again for the help though guys. This thread can be closed now.
