Anyone else having issues with 5GHz wifi becoming unresponsive and needing to be turned off and immediately back on to kick it into working?
I've got Smart Network Switch and Download Booster (switch to mobile data if wifi is no good; use wifi + LTE) both switched off, so they shouldn't be a factor.. I even switched them back on and then off just to be sure that they were in fact off.
After a painful day spent trying to transfer data to the new phone, and installing all of my usual apps - having to disable and renable wifi at least 50 times throughout the day - I decided to switch from using my 5GHz wifi to 2.4GHz (same router), and it now seems fine. Switching back to 5, and I end up back with the same result - wifi will work fine for a while before stopping.
My Galaxy S5 has no issue using the 5GHz (and neither do any other devices I have), so it doesn't appear to be the router (Asus RT-AC87U) at fault unless there's just some compatibility issue with the S6.
Phone is G920I (Australian version, 64GB)

Pretty sure this is a Android 5.0 problem. My nexus 6 has this problem as well. I have the AC68U. I am getting my GS6 tomorrow so I will see if it has the problem then. No problems on 2.4 like you.
Turn off the stupid Smart Network Switching.
noticed exactly the same thing, all other devices in the house are perfect, but the S6 loses connection now and then even when next to the router.
No issues using my 5ghz wifi network and the S6, have not had to disable/enable it once for any reason. Tmobile version.
You might try getting yours replaced, 50 times in a day is insane.
Thanks for the replies guys - oddly comforting to see that some others are having the same issue..
@byronhinson - Can I ask what brand of router you have (since both Prod1702 and I are having the issue with Asus routers + Lollipop)
I have exactly the same issue and on top of that the phone gets laggy when it losts the wifi!
However with classic wifi (not 5Ghz), it works fine all the time!
GS6 32Gb - Australian version as well
Same issue here. I hope they will fix it.
No issues here, 5ghz all day long well when I'm home
Sent from my SM-G925T using Tapatalk
I have a AC68U as well (or the T-Mobile 'Cellspot' version of the same), and my Galaxy S6 stays solidly connected to my 5ghz network all day.
Turn Off Smart Network Switching!
Problem solved..

Look at the silver lining - at least you didn't spend an entire day unawares and having to constantly switch wifi off and on to kick it back into gear, before *eventually* (after all of your transferring of data and installation of apps was done) thinking to switch to 2.4 and having it work as I did

I had the same problem and my router also is ASUS AC87U , wifi disconnected problem can solved after upgrade your router's firmware.
but there is a very serious problem I found.
on ASUS AC87U 5G wifi + Galaxy S6 , it drain battery very fast and get very high cpu usage at screen off.
it means the phone always keep running and can't get in sleep mode.
connected to another brand router it just be fine, very stable and no battery drain, So, I don't know this is ASUS's problem or Samsung's, that makes me very annoyed :crying:
hope someone can told me how to solve, thanks!

Argh - trying to update the router firmware was the first thing that I tried when I found the issue.. Stupid bloody router kept on saying that I had the latest version, but checking the Asus website shows that there's a later version from 2nd April that requires a factory reset after installing - 2 of the things fixed are around wifi issues..
Updated and so far so good, but I guess a couple of time will tell. I'll keep an eye on battery/cpu usage and see how it goes..
Hopefully a router firmware update will fix the 5GHz issue for others that are having the issue too, at least for those with Asus routers.
For all of you who are having this issue, how is your battery life?
Just got my S6 today, same router as the OP (Asus RT-AC87U) and same problem on 5Ghz. Constantly disconnecting and reconnecting to Wifi.
2.4Ghz works fine
5Ghz work very solid on other devices so i'm not really sure what is the problem.
Galaxy tab S 105 and 8.4 works fine on the same router's 5Ghz network.
5GHz for dummies
I was having similar problems, where two Samsung devices in the house were both having difficulty remaining connected to the AC87U router for any length of time. Sometimes they would continually report Authentication Error but then connect happily after a reboot. Other times, they just would not connect.
In my case, it boiled down to dumb user error. I was using the same SSID for both bands, but had mistyped a character in the password for the 5GHz band and so was only able to connect to 2.4GHz band.
Perhaps this will save somebody else some trouble!
Hi, I make my comparisons versus my Gear 2 and just what seems reasonable.
With my Gear 2 I could be in another room in the house, a good 15 meters away and no issues, with the S2 (especially with the new function of vibrate on disconnect) it constantly drops when I move room even sometimes for no reason.
Also setup the WIFI option as a backup but again half the time it shows the WIFI signal as poor and I am sat right near the router, which is working 100% fine with everything else (i.e. mobile, laptops, tablets, tv.)
i get the same, bluetooth just disconnects , don't know why. also bluetooth music earphones cut out and range poor
I have exactly the same range problem on galaxy s6 edge plus with all bluetooth devices.
It's shocking , if Samsung don't fix these issues soon , will switch to fist android wear device with lte , there lucky the urbane 2nd got discontinued
A hard reset helped but still disappointing
Below when I refer to versions I am referring to Stock NVIDIA ROM versions with N# as the NVIDIA version for the release and A# as the Android version of the release.
Does your 2014 Shield Tablet experience WiFi issues on NVIDIA 3.1.1 Android 5.1.1 or NVIDIA 4.0 Android 6.0?
WiFi issues are as follows: (slow to start taking sometimes minutes before WiFi on, fail to start, needs rebooting sometimes multiple reboots, MAC 02:00:00:00:00:00)
Battery Type can be seen in Settings > About Tablet > Status > Battery
I ask this because I have a feeling I am seeing a trend in the tablets with WiFi issues and those without WiFi issues on the original 2014 Shield Tablet.
I also believe I now understand NVIDIA's reasoning for removing the old OTAs and the old Full Recovery files.
I think those of us with B01* tablets will need a proper full recovery and/or proper attention from NVIDIA to provide fixes. Or possibly someone with a working B01 tablet that knows how to pull everything off the tablet that gets replaced during a Fully Recovery (not a simple TWRP backup) (if even possible) to then make into something that could be flashed to B01* units to restore them to true B01.
There are currently 3 battery types that can be reported on N3.1.1 A5.1.1 and higher:
Y01
B01
B01*
From the tests done so far and reports that have come in.
Tablets reporting as B01* having reliably working WiFi on N1.2.1 A4.4.2
Tablets reporting as B01* having reliably working WiFi on N2.2.1 A5.0.1
Tablets reporting as B01* have issues with WiFi on N3.1.0 A5.1
Tablets reporting as B01* have issues with WiFi on N3.1.1 A5.1.1
Tablets reporting as B01* have issues with WiFi on N4.0 A6.0
Current Tally from my own devices and those who have reported in via posting to my initial comments:
Battery Type - Count - Status
B01 - 1 - No WiFi issues.
B01* - 4 - WiFi Isues.
Y01 - 2 - No WiFi Issues.
As such I'm also adding a simple Poll to this thread.
Sorry 2015 Shield Tablet K1 owners I simply do not know enough about the potential reasons for the WiFi issues there as I have no K1 units and have done no testing with them.

I have a Y01 and a B01, neither have any WiFi issues. In fact i can't think out of the 8 replacements that I've received, that i ever came across a device with bad wifi. My issues were the screen, Sim port death, the stylus, speakers, and memory failure. My original Y01 is still kicking along nicely with BlissPop installed. B01 has the newest OTA installed, so far I've found it better then 5.1.1.
Just going to report in on the Vulkan Prerelease - 67.13|6.0.1 build.
WiFi works better than 3.1.1 or 4.0 for my B01* units.
Still experience reboots with some slow to start WiFi sessions (2 or more minutes before showing on).
Still experience some reboots where WiFi does not turn on at all.
Still experience some wake from sleep with WiFi not turning on.
WiFi returns in 1 or 2 reboots every time thus far.
WiFi return has not once lost known access points yet.
While this is improved on these units compared to N3.1.1 A5.1.1 and N4.0 A6.0 I'd still say A6.0.1 needs improvement before it is on par with N2.2.1 A5.0.1 for WiFi reliability on reboot/wake at least for my B01* devices. Still no problems on the Y01 devices for me.
Well, I can report that WiFi scanning has completely broke suddenly for me two days ago on two tablets, Y01 (A5.1.1) and B01 (A6.0). Great Aprils Fools Joke NVIDIA!
On Automatic/2.4GHz mode, the WiFi scanning can only reliably pick up SSID's from Channel 1 (immediate), and partially Channel 2 (1-2 minutes). The remaining channels are picked up very slowly and sporadically, if at all. I have to force it to 5GHz mode if I want it to pick up my 5GHz SSID reliably.
I tried changing the firmware on the Y01 tablet (Tried KitKat and Lollipop recovery images, CM12.1), but no change in the broken behavior. I just find it really odd that WiFi went from completely reliable to total sh*t on TWO tablets at the same time.
Unless a future firmware fixes this issue, this means that all my tablets are now potentially to be utterly useless when traveling as it can only reliably connect to Channel 1. Way to go NVIDIA!
Is the B01* version from 2014? I bought this tablet 3 months ago and yes, it is the new Tablet K1, yet in the settings it shows the battery as B01*...
Well I recently bought a Xperia z5 white and have problems with wifi. It disconnect when I using like watching videos on YouTube or browsing.
It seems like is sleeping the WiFi I have Mm anyone know how to solve this?
Same issue here, it's happened since I bought my Z5 6 months ago...
Also, the 5GHz Wireless tends to disconnect randomly when screen is turned off (All power saving crap is disabled I believe), so I have to stick to 2.4GHz wireless if I want to have it "stable".
I downgrade the phone to lollipop, still same problem about sleeping connection.
Can't use wifi properly. Useless phone ????
I test this firmware and 0 problems with wifi
All others versions have the WiFi dropping connection problem
I don't even know how I could begin troubleshooting. My Pixel is rooted if that matters, and is on the latest Oreo update (I am not upgrading to Pie until GravityBox is ported).
Out of seemingly nowhere, the Wi-Fi tether range is beyond horrible. Basically my phone has to be within AN INCH OR TWO of my Laptop/Nintendo Switch/etc for it to connect. It used to connect from a different room!
Does anybody know what could be going on? It's not the Wi-Fi chip (I don't think) because it connects to WiFi networks just fine. The only issue is range when the tethering is active.
I am guessing this is some sort of battery-saving mode? But I have no idea how it was "enabled" because I have been on the latest update for months.
This is making my life miserable because I use my hotspot for things like my laptop and my iPad and it's completely unrealistic to use it like this. It *WILL* in fact connect, but like I said, the phone has to be within INCHES of the device!
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Anyone? Is there somewhere else I should post it here since it's more of a general hardware issue?
