Camera will open and operate normally. If the front-facing camera (ffc) is attempted to be activated the ffc will not open. The screen will go black and become unresponsive. I can only press the home button and get back to the home screen. If I try to re-open the camera app it then will not open. After the ffc attempt the camcorder also will not function. All failures seem triggered by the ffc failure. I must restart the phone and regain back camera functionality but it doesn't fix the ffc failure. Has anyone had ffc failures with their copy of this phone? I don't think that it is software but that is what I'm trying to determine. I flashed Bulletproof 1.1, CM7, Unity and the camera exhibited same behavior in all of those roms. After that, I reverted back to stock out of the box. Same failure of the ffc.
I have used this phone for about 5 months without any previous camera errors/failures. I was trying to get gtalk video to work around the time the ffc failure began. But now that I'm back to stock and the failure remains, I don't know.
1) Has anyone experienced ffc failure?
2) Could this be software related?
3) Has the new GTalk video apk broken anything for anyone?
TIA
i just tried this, and the front cam works perfectly, and i can switch back and forth between front and back camera with no problems. i'm on the very latest OTA that installed the video Gtalk.
could it be your phone's hardware? did it work before?
I'm figuring that it MUST be the hardware. Just odd that it began right when trying to really utilize the ffc for the first time. I have utilized it here and there in months past several times. Thanks for your reply. I guess it is just hardware failure. Happens.

Is your camera locking up (No pre-view picture)?
When I select the camera icon, I see the camera menu in the lower part of the screen and I can even take pictures, however I see a black image instead of the pre-view photo on the screen. This issue goes away by soft resetting the phone; however it usually comes back after few days and the only way to see the pre-view image is by resetting the phone. The strange part is that the camera can actually take pictures but I cannot see the photo before taking it. Have you heard of this issue? The phone works just fine otherwise and I like it a lot.
Thanks,

Are you running stock?
I can't speak for whatever potential issues might be caused by any of the custom roms in circulation, but on a stock phone, obviously it shouldn't be doing that.
I can't imagine what hardware issue would produce intermittent preview-ability that's temporarily remedied by a soft reset, yet still manages to capture the photo itself, but there's a first time for everything.

My stock camera application (and Camera360) and camcorder applications both exhibit this behavior. A soft-reset of the device usually temporarily resolves the issue (i.e. allows me to use the camera for a short period of time). However, after my phone has been on for a while any app that uses the camera just locks up (eventually have to force close or soft-reset).
It is rather annoying. The only information I found seems to indicate that there may be an issue with the API within FroYo itself. Hopefully when we get the update to GingerBread the problem will resolve itself.
I also read something else about something to do with an LED widget that caused someone problems but I'm not using any LED widgets, so I'm not sure what that's referring to.
Hopefully there's a fix out there somewhere or we get the 2.3 update soonish.

Hmmm...
This is the first thread I've come across that brings up this problem.
My stock (rooted) phone, my mom's stock phone, and my dad's stock phone have never encountered an issue like this, but then again, maybe we were the three lucky ones...
EDIT:
That's not to say you guys are crazy... maybe we just haven't had the right combo of circumstances to expose the problem/bug on our phones.
Now that I think more about it, I did have an issue when I ran barcode scanner once, about a month ago. That of course uses the camera. As soon as it identified the barcode, and I pressed the 'search web' button, it just froze (image still visible), but the back key/screen input was unresponsive. The only thing that worked was the home button, which, instead of going to the home screen, displayed the screen you see when you are about to end a call with someone on your phone. Thing is, I hadn't made a single call that day. That screen was also unresponsive, but when I pushed the home button again, it finally got to the home screen.
I then went into manage apps in settings and FC'd barcode scanner and the dialer/phone, just in case. I even uninstalled barcode scanner because I thought it might have a phone-specific bug that I didn't want to deal with.
I don't know if there's any correlation between the yours/OP's issue, but it sounds like it's ****ed up in a similar way. FWIW.

I think I managed to fix mine by wiping my dalvik cache. On the downside, my current drain used to be around 5 when my phone was in standby and now it is around 45. On the upside, I haven't had a problem with the camera or camcorder since then.

Mine ended up being a hardware issue. Phone was exchanged with at&t. Haven't had an issue with the camera since.
Just wanted to update for the OP.

Hi, I'm having an issue with my Nexus 5 which is that the front and back cameras as well as the back LED no longer seem to function. This happens in the stock Camera app where as soon as it is opened, an 'Unfortunately, Camera has stopped.' message comes up and blackness is shown. This also happens in third party apps such as Snapchat where the message 'Snapchat was unable to open the camera. You may need to restart your device ' comes up. In addition, upon attempting to use Tesla LED, the back facing LED does not turn on.
The likely cause that I can see is the recent screen replacement that took place. I ordered this[1] online which came with a new set of cameras as well as a new screen. I took the motherboard, battery and rear case from the old phone and attached them to the new set of cameras and the new screen.
After performing the replacement, everything else worked except the cameras and the LED.
Upon seeing the issue, I tried swapping out the new rear facing camera (that came with the screen replacement) for the old rear facing camera that was in the old phone (the camera still worked before the replacement). After swapping the rear camera the issue was unchanged.
I have tried the following in terms of software fixes:
-Other camera applications - they crash or are black
-Clear cache and application data for the stock camera app - no effect
-Change to ART - no effect
I would greatly appreciate any help or advice that you can offer.
I'd reinstall stock rom and gapps, if they still don't work you know it's a hardware problem for sure. Then troubleshoot from there.

I factory reset the device and tried the default Google Apps, still having the same issues.
Any suggestions for hardware trouble shooting?

As for hardware trouble shooting, being that you know the original cameras worked, all you can do is check the connections . I'd unplug them and plug them back in.
I'd also try flashing the 4.4 stock camera zip and see if that works.

I tried reattaching all of the physical connections and that did not seem to make a difference.
In regards to flashing the 4.4 stock camera zip, would you be able to give me a little guidance as to how that process would occur?
Thanks so much for your help so far.
You'd need to root, install a custom recovery (twrp), use titanium backup to uninstall camera. Then boot into your custom recovery and install the camera zip.

Sorry for such a long response time.
I updated the phone to 4.4.3.
Interestingly the back facing camera appears to have started working. The default camera application still fails to open, but when I use another application (Snapchat) and have it set to try the backfacing camera first, everything seems to work ok. However, when I switch to front facing the application says that it can't find the camera.
In addition, the back facing LED has begun to work again as well.
Previously, I had switched out the new rear facing camera (that came with the casing) for the old rear facing camera hoping that it might changes things. I recognize retrospectively that my method of testing was flawed as it seems as though regardless of whether one of the cameras is/was working the application would not open.
Hoping that the replacement of the rear facing had caused it to start working, I swapped out the new front facing camera for the old one. Upon testing, the issues with the front facing camera seem to persist.
At this point I'm not sure how to proceed. The lack of functionality of both front facing cameras (the old and the new) would seem to suggest an issue with the connector on the motherboard if the problem were hardware based. I'm not sure, though, if the problem could somehow be in software.
One software phenomenon that I observed is that as soon as I try to use the front facing camera, the back facing camera stops working again requiring the application to be reset. This occurrence has led me to question the causation between the update and the new functionality. It is possible that in my testing of the device before the update, I had simply been opening the front facing camera and upon seeing it fail, and trying the back facing camera and seeing it fail (because I had tried the front facing camera), that I assumed it was not working.
If you have any recommendations on how to proceed I would greatly appreciate hearing them. If not then thanks for all your help.

Any updates mate? Did you made it work ?
I opened my nexus to fix the gps. Everything worked fine, until suddenly gps stopped working. I opened again, remove the fix, still the same.
Then my camera stopped working as well. "Cannot connect to camera" or something like this it gave me.
I've updated from 4.4.4 kitkat to android L latest build, and gps works but the camera app crashes, as well as any other camera on market ( either black screen or crash ).
Any help for me ?
Any answer it will be appreciated.
Same exact issue with front facing camera after glass replacement. Anybody find a fix yet?
I have a weird camera bug on my phone.
Since a few days ago, every time I switch to the front camera, the camera app crashes and I have to force close and delete data to get it working againg.
This happens on multiple roms with multiple camera apps, so it has to be hardware related.
I opened up my phone to change the screen a few weeks again, but everything was working fine after that until now.
Now the thing is, I opened up the phone again to see if maybe the cable went loose, which it didn't, but when the back was removed the camera was working correctly.
Closed up the phone again, same thing as before, front camera does not work.
What could the reason for this be?
It's software not hardware. Mine won't take screen photo's. It says not enough memory with 4gigs free. I use a widget with extensive reboot /recovery options and that has a screen grab that works. I've had the bugs you have and had to switch roms, providing it's software
How can it be software when the issue persists on different roms, stock roms and after factory reset and with different camera apps. Added to the fact that the front camera worked when I tried it with the phone back removed
First off, I have not seen this anywhere else, but appologies if i've missed it!
Even on a completely clean install of the M preview, upon opening camera, and once passed the 'OK, GOT IT' button, camera closes. Every time. Regardless of what i do, clear cache, update, remove updates etc. Happens on Preview 1 and 2. Doesnt happen in 5.0/5.1/5.1.1. I thought it might be the fact the camera was damaged being reported in some new way to the system, forcing the closure (i ripped the cable slightly when repairing another part (i know, dumb, but i slipped)), but have since replaced with a new part and still have issues.
Has anyone else had this, and fixed it? Thanks!
Hello, I have the same problem. Unfortunately, my problem persists on older versions of android. My problem seems to be the front facing camera, because with a third party app, the rear camera works. I replaced the front camera, but it still does not work in any app, and the Camera app still does not start. Tried removing the front camera - app again stops working.
That is the same for me. Snapchat will use the rear camera fine, but doesn't register the phone as even having a front camera

Same here! I can take photos through Tinder, and download them to my phone (although sometimes the Tinder app will crash too). But whenever I open the Camera app I get the "Unfortunately, Camera has stopped" message. I've tried multiple reboots, closing the app, not closing the app, resetting the cache, etc. Nothing works.
I believe this all started when I tried to take a "selfie" one time (I guess that's God's way of telling me never to do that again). When I switched to the front camera all hell broke loose. Now I'm guessing it's "stuck" on the front camera and I can't run the app even to switch it back!
Yesterday, I could use my rear camera normally without problems. Now every app that uses the rear camera (Camera, Snapchat, etc.) crashes instatnly without giving chance to switch to front facing camera. Tried factory reset like a million times without any luck. What could be the possible reason and how can i get it back to work ?

Same problem here...any fix for this?
same problem here, any solutions?
add another person. My wife's u11 just stopped working no matter the resets, forced RUU updates (stock) and everything.
Spoke to HTC they said they'd fix it but said they have no timetable on when they'd return it! They're falling apart.

This is U11 life thread and not u11, and its related to a not working camera module and not the whole device. For HTC repair i can tell you it takes something between 3 and 12 months to get the device back. No joke you can read about these long repair times a lot online.

same issue here. No fix but to confirm it's a hardware issue, I use Google voice commands to say "Take a selfie" - which launches the camera app with the front facing camera selected.
If that works fine, then it is likely a hardware issue with the rear camera, you can contact HTC, though your mileage may vary.
If front-facing camera is also not working, that could indicate a software issue you could try resetting the camera settings back to default. Other possible causes might be the disk / sd card where photos are being stored when camera is launched....
Back camera stopped working completely here, no picture, just black and the camera app closes after 5 sec. Resetting camera app did not help. Other camera app (open camera) has the same problem.
Front camera works from “long tap / selfie cam”
