[Q] ICS Nightly Builds - any tips ? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On build 17. Liking the tweaks and fixes so far.
Couple of issues, and to see if anyone using the builds has a working app or fix please ?
1. Builds mention fixing and moving USB storage. I cannot for the life of me get a 1tb WD Elements NTFS drive mounted. Can't do it in settings, but in the Moray Rom I was able to use USB Mass storage mounted to create a mount in the mount folder. I understand the app/s may be the issue, I tried another and it sees the drive, but won't mount it.
I don't know if its related, but super user stops responding if you try and access its settings, but seems to work when setting apps privileges ? Also busy box seems to hang when that is clicked on as well ?
2. This might be pure chance, but I usually install a new build every morning if there have been changes. Does anyone else have to reset their router when trying to setup wireless for the first time on setup. Its quite bizzare, I am sat next to the router, full signal strength, but when I enter the password, the bars drop down and it never connects. It reverts back to 1 bar and stays at saved. If I click forget, the Wifi icon goes back to full bars again, until I try my password again. The only way round this, is to reset the router. Then it connects first time.
Any tips greatly received. If I can get my HD mounted this setup is fine for me to use when I work away in Africa. No wireless where I work, so this turns into a brick

[Q] Wifi signal?
Does anyone get a weak wifi signal with their Nexus S? Whenever I connect to my at home wifi I never get full bars and something I'll just randomly lose signal. Also it seems to go pretty slow. I used to have the Mytouch4G and it work flawlessly with the wifi. Anyone else having this problem?

OMG yesss I do.
Just about a room away I loose signal, almost completely. = 0
IDK, but I see more flaws every day that passes
Mine's been working fine over Wi-Fi. I'm pretty glad it does too, because my only data option with it is Wi-Fi..
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Wifi has been working great for me. It reconnects automatically and doesn't drop. The signal seems on par with my nexus one.
Speed wise, is it on par with the 3G network?
[Q] Wifi does not work anymore after rooting :(
So, I unlocked my Android 2.3.1 and rooted it ... But if I click on wifi so I could connect to my modem it says Error and wont even search or anything. I tried reseting too but still no luck .. What is the problem and how to fix this ??
That's odd, I didn't have any issues with wifi as I connected to Android Market to downloaded ROM Manager during my rooting process earlier. Have you tried flashing a custom ROM on your device to see if it'll fix it?
No I didnt, would that work? .. A friend told me to install a new "kernel" but I dont want to overwhelm my android with custom made kernels .
your problem is you used one of the quick methods of rooting your phone, which used a kernel that wasn't from the exact rom you have.
if your on stock 2.3.1, you will need the stock 2.3.1 boot.img, and then you'll need to root it manually the long way via adb command line. search the nexus s development section for how-to's. they are all there.
i too had this problem, had to install MoDaCo ROM to fix it, but i dont regret rooting, i now have custom rom and over clocked cpu on the nexus s
you have two options, either to flash NANDROID backup to un-root and return to stock or install a custom ROM, i choose MoDaCo bcoz of its UI, it looks and feels just like the stock one.

Yes, that's the point of MoDaCo roms, to make minimal changes to the look and feel of the phone, but to improve performance with his custom optimizations.
[Q] Nexus S wifi issue. Unable to access wifi from my nexus s.
Hi Guys,
I was able to connect to my wifi network for a day. I am using windows 7 machine as hotspot with connectify. From second day I am unable to connect to any wifi network. I did factory reset my nexus s but no results . Can some one help me how to solve this issue?
Observations:
*when i use static ip, It shows connected but the bars are in white instead of green color and i am unable to browse.
*When i use dynamic ip I am unable to connect to wifi. It shows obtaining Ip and never connects.
*In connectify when I was able to connect to wifi the device is shown with an android device name. but now the device is shown as unknown.

[Q] Nexus S Wifi Settings - force close
Hi all,
Just got a new Nexus S - all was well at home. Took it to work today and noticed something very odd. It was fine until entering the wifi settings menu - at which point it dramatically slowed down. I got two 'not responding, close or wait' messages before being able to join the network.... all other settings are fine - just the wifi area.
Weird - wondering what could cause this... too many wifi networks broadcasting (am in middle of London)...?
Anyone seen anything similar?

Too many WiFi around you shouldn't cause that.
Try rebooting and setting again if you haven't already.
Hmmm - rebooted and still have the same issue. At home, or even a block away from the office it all works fine. But in the office itself, although it connects and uses the wifi fine, the settings page is VERY slow to load and gives me the wait/force close message.
Out of interest - I also have 'wifi analyser' from the marketplace. This too is very slow and unresponsive when in the office.
So - it is definately something to do with the wifi here.... but have not got a clue what. Before I join the wifi, or when I am physically somewhere else it all works fine.
Wifi is WPA-TKIP, the key is a very long jumble of letters but surely that is not an issue.
Strange eh!!!

[Q] Possible WiFi problem?
Hi there, just bought a Nexus S, also used to have Nexus One.
The thing is for some wireless networks even though I enter the password correctly, it says connected and still there is no connection at all. (I mean browser tries to connect but at the end it says page could not be found) I even tried with an ad-hoc network that I created with my laptop but still the problem exists.
At home I'm able to my network without a problem. The type of network I'm trying to connect is: WPA2 Personal with AES. Is there any known issue about AES at Android system? Afaik there is no way to change the encryption used right?
this might actually not be a nexus S issue.
some modems/switches/routers are configured to block certain devices/applications/package's
we have a modem and router with both wifi.
but my psp/nDS cant connect to the modem, but can connect with the router

i have a similar problem. My Nexus S connects to my router only within a few hours after a router reset. Then it stucks at "obtaining ip" and never connected before I do another router reset.
My home wifi is WPA2 type, and for WEP type wifi my NS never got connected.

[Q] Liquid 3.2 = dead wifi/gps

I just upgraded my Droid X to Liquid 3.2 (full SBF to 602, ota'd to 605, rooted, then flash to Liquid). I love the ROM, but it appears that my wifi and GPS are now broken. Wifi tries to turn on but then turns back off after a second or two; GPS won't even attempt to come on. Anyone know a fix for this?
Edit: I rebooted into recovery, wiped cache and Dalvik cache, and tried again. Now the GPS appears to be working, and the wifi stays on. However, when I try to connect to my home network, it drops off after a second or two (once it connects, it keeps scanning, and then it disconnects). I logged into my router and saw that my phone was briefly hitting it, but all the router log showed was the transfer of an IP address, nothing useful for troubleshooting. Does anyone know of a log file on the phone somewhere that might indicate why it keeps dropping off of my wireless network (yes, I've double checked the password, and yes, the wireless network is functional right now).
I'm out of guesses at this point, so I'm hoping someone else can help me out.
Hm. It gets curiouser and curiouser...
I've been tinkering throughout the day, and if there is any generalization I can make, it's that between wifi, GPS, and airplane mode, one of them (occasionally two, but never all three) will work at any given time, but every time I reboot a different combination starts working. Go figure.
Help anyone?
you got same problem i got. let me know what you figure out. I will post if i figure it out
I could not figure out wifi, so I went to vortex. I like the liquid but the wifi is a big problem and I did not have a lot of time to mess with it right now. I may by another droid x just to mess with things of this nature. If anyone comes up with wifi solution please post.

[Q] Wifi Hotspot not working after installing CM9

I installed CM9 on my phone and it seems to be working fine, except few issues. One issue is that when I enable WiFi Hotspot, it fails to start.
When I go in settings, I can provide settings for WiFi Hotspot. After that, when I enable it, I see in notification area that wifi is being disabled, but after that hotspot option becomes enable again, wifi remains enabled and not hotspot is available for my computer to connect to.
I installed a teethering app from Play store and that works, but that creates an adhoc network only. I was able to use wifi teethering with HTC image, before installing CM9.
I have S-ON.
Does anyone else has seen this issue, especially with Cyanogenmod 9 Stable (cm-9.1.0-doubleshot.zip) on this phone
I've been using the CM9.1 + drain fix + USB fix ROM you'll see in the development section since November. I'm on r8, but they're up to r9b now. This is much better than the plain CM9.0 for our device as it fixed a couple of major issues like battery drain and slow USB transfer rates. I used WIFI hotspot and tethering for the first time last Thursday, and it worked first time no problem. No additional apps needed. Got my laptop hooked up to the internet and able to VPN into work network in a moving car (somebody else was driving honest!). Not sure if that helps answer your question directly, but it certainly works in CM9 series ROMs, and if you don't have 9.1 you should go get it1.

Thanks davidf9. I will try CM9.1.
From where I can get drain fix and USB fix?
Couple of other issues, I am seeing are: 1. no keyboard lights for caps lock or Alt buttons. 2. For some reason my barcode/QR reader/Google gogle apps are not able to lock on bar codes and when they snapshot they get scrambled image. Also, some other apps (like 3d compass) having distorted view from camera. Camera app itself working fine.
Have you see any of these issues with CM9.1?
The battery drain and USB drain fixes are built into the ROM by scverhagen, you don't need to separately apply them.
As to your other questions, the caps and alt LEDs don't work for me either I just hadn't noticed! I don't have any problem with my QR code scanner, but I don't use the other things you mention so can't comment.
I installed scverhagen's build cm-9-1-(3-0-53)-r9b.zip (MD5 1c16aafa8d0220d44b5b7ea22e7fb24c) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32192055. I cleared Delvik cache, battery stats cache and cache partitions before installing it.
It fixed camera / QR Code Reader issue, but HotSpot issue is still there.
I did some more research and found some suggestions about "fixing permissions", turning wifi off and rebooting. I tried these and got Hotspot temporarily once, but on next try it failed.
I guess I need to collect logs and see what's going on. Thanks for your help.
You did a factory reset/wipe while in recovery as well didn't you? Several guides around here recommend doing the whole sequence several times over. Look for some of Strapped365's posts.
As I said, the hotspot worked for me first time, no problem. Just what was built into CM, no new apps. Must have been lucky. Sorry can't help further.
I didn't do a Factory Reset this time . I did that for when installing Cyanogenmod ROM, but I didn't had time to reinstall all apps and do all the settings again this time around. May be I will retry on weekend.
Thanks for the great help.
If S-On, you'll always have to fastboot flash boot boot.img thru ADB or your network never will work.
The PROPER way to wipe before a flash is as follows:
1. Wipe dalvik TWICE.
2. Under 'Mounts & Storage' format system.
3. THEN factory reset on the first CWM page.
These are the minimum requirements for a complete wipe.....
Thanks. I didn't do step 3 for this ROM installation. I am thinking of taking a Titanium Backup of all the apps, following your steps and then restoring apps after installation.
I am hoping this will save me from hassle of re-installing all the apps and configuring them.
That it will do. Just be aware that reinstalling them in a different ROM with their data sometimes causes an issue with an app. It will put them all back though....just not on your different pages that you may have them on.

Wifi disconnect

Recently I have been experiencing Wifi disconnects every 2-3 hours. I have tried Wifi settings by clicking on connect, tried choosing forget and resiging in and tried the app Wifi fix but all the app tells me is it is "completed" but it is not. The only way I can get it back is to reboot but then it only fixes it for a couple hours. I thought it might somehow be connected to the rom (CROMI-X 5.2.4) though it has never happened with any rom before. So, I reinstalled a older rom (CROMIX 4.7.0) which was always stable for me in the past but it started doing the samething.

Go into setting/wifi/advanced In there make sure you WiFi region is set to your area... Try unchecking some or all of the optimization for the wifi... See if that helps, let me know.. As always thx lj
The only thing I have checked in Advanced Wifi is Notifications Wifi on during sleep is set to never. As for right region I.m not sure what you mean, my mac and ip address' are correct.
Check your router as well. In my experience routers cause a lot more wifi problems than people realise.
It's worth rebooting them every now and then. Also download wifi analyzer and make sure you aren't on a channel with a lot of neighbours.
DIdn't you have a NetGear router? The latest firmware was known to cause issues. Did you downgrade it?
I rebooted my router and I moved to another channel, so now I will wait and see. What I do not understand is when I lose wifi on the Asus I will ask my wife to check the wifi connection on her tablet and hers is fine?
Well guys, I did everything you suggested and it is still doing it. I am now running 5.3a. Has anyone everheard of the wifi just suddely breaking on the Asus? The reason I ask is that even though I broke my Asus warranty I do have a square trade warranty.

Try flashing back to pure stock from Asus or a clean install at least.
When doing a clean install but I want to save whats on my internal card can I just move /sdcard to my pc before I do a full wipe or should I move other stuff also? What do you suggest?

If you just wipe from TWRP it only wipes you apps and data. You won't lose any media stuff so pictures, music, videos etc will stay. You should do a titanium back up if you want to restore apps and data.
If you choose format you will lose all so yes you would need to backup to either your PC or external SD. But you don't need to format to do a wipe.
Did a clean install and now wifi no longer stops.
I am having another problem, playstore apps updates or new apps do not seem to ever finish d/ling, the blue line just keeps running forever. I have tried stopping and restarting but that does not seem to do anything.
Should I post this as a new question?

Lost LTE and internet access on some Wi-Fi networks after flashing Cyanogenmod

This is the first help post for anything tech-related that I've ever posted- I'm usually good enough with Google to fix my own problems, but this one has me flustered.
Until yesterday I was running DigitalHigh's GPE ROM but decided to give Cyanogenmod another try after some persistent lag issues. Everything went fine during the install until I noticed that I was stuck on 3G no matter what I did- airplane mode, reboot, clear the cache, try to update APN settings, etc., nothing helped. Additionally, while the phone will connect to my home wireless network, it has a ! next to the connection symbol despite my being able to use the network with my laptop. The funny thing is, this only happens with some networks. Neither my home network nor the network at work will give me internet access, but if I plug an ethernet cable into my laptop and create an access point that way, I'm fine.
Here's what I've tried so far after scouring these and other forums:
-Reverted back to the previous ROM
-Flashed new firmware
-Flashed two new kernels
-Tried every different APN setting I can think of
-Popped out my sim card, waited a bit, and popped it back in
-Rebooted countless times
-Cleared every cache I can think of
-updated TWRP
There's probably more that I can't think of off the top of my head as well. Does anybody have any idea what on earth has happened to my phone?
