[Q] Model #? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my TF and I want to root it. I see that people are saying B70 and 80 have trouble rooting. How exactly do I check which I have?

It's not a model number it's your serial number.
Look at the bottom of your tablet near the charging port or on the back of the box that it came in.

Found it
I checked under the tablet. Its a B70
Quick ?: What would happen if i were to try using the root toolkit? Would it just say that it cannot root or would it brick the tab?

check the first digits of your serial number, if its B80 or higher, you're out of luck.
if it's B60 or below, check out the sticked, "unbrick" thread in the dev section (can also be used for rooting). there are also several threads regarding NVFLASH-based rooting. this is always the simplest and clanest IMO.
if it's B70, then it depends. this is the time when they switched NVFLASH keys on the device, so they may work, they may not.
the only other root method requires honeycomb 3.0. sadly, you can't downgrade from 3.2.
i believe the peeps that brought us the previous root methods are working on a new one (an possibly finding the new nvflash keys)...so offer up some chickens to the root gods, and hope for the best.

Just search the Development forum or browse the first page. There's a one-click root if you have Linux (or a LiveCD if you don't) or a couple of other methods. Unless you have a B70 version, in which case i don't think there is a root method yet.
Use the one click method, it's so simple that even i did it with no problem
I used mashi's post for 3 TF's... Just what you find easiest to follow.

[Q] New Eee Pad Transformer Owner Look For Root

Hello everybody! Like the title says, I just got my TF101 2 days ago. I immediately came to look for the rooting process but not being very savy in the whole ADB process I was intimidated quite a bit. I ran into the whole B70 deal so I did a little research on XDA/Google and I have a B80 model. Am I to understand that I should just wait for an updated root process or am I missing something here?
Ya you will just have to wait. if you can exchange it for a b60 then you can get on with it but if not you will have to wait. b80 just means it was made in august
Hey Hunter,
Same boat as you. I must have sunk 6 hours into trying to root it until I finally realized that was the problem I was running into (made me feel like such a huge n00b-c4nn0n lo). Basically, the nvflash method fails for me everytime and I always get an error that says something like "failed to write to USB". Similar for you?
My girlfriend got a Transformer today that was still a B50, not sure what is going on in my area but everywhere else has new units in!

Is it true that i will loose OTA updates?
I just got used to the honeycomb interface so im not in the mood of installing a custom ROM yet, i just want to have root in order to install certain apps that requiere root.
Thanks in advance!
You will loose OTA updates but the interface won't really change, it'll just speed up!
Yup exactly the same. Has anyone heard anything new?

So I'm getting myself an ASUS Eee Pad Transformer for Christmas, does this device have the ability to have an unlocked bootloader? (I will be installing custom ROMs and overclocking)
Thanks in advance!
Yes, any future devices are completely rootable. No doubts.

it all depends on the build number in the serial. The devs here figured out a way around it regardless.

So in that case - yes on unlockable bootloader, yes on root (obviously).

You should be fine with the app that the devs developed. There's also a recovery installer app to get CWM installed properly too. Then flashing ROMs should be easy. There are quite a few on here running custom ROMs with a newer serial#, so no worries.

As far as I know if u got a Pre-B70 device u can still root with Universal Root Toolkit using APX mode.
I am havin a B80 transformer and updated bymistake and am stuck.
If ur on 8.6.5.21 and hav a B80+ Transformer all you can do is Wait for a new Exploit
I have a B70, cannot root with .21! Shame, will wait for update.

Try using the Universal RootKit here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185104
I've successfully used it on my B50 and just this morning used it on a B60 model for a family member. It may still work for a B70 edition.

Agreed I've heard lot's of success stories for the B70 with this tool. I'm a B80 so I'm screwed (for now I hope), grrrrr Asus.
i just got a transformer for Christmas and its a b70. Will attempting that root method brick my device if it fails? I was following a root guide and stopped part way through just after i updated, came back and it said it wanted to update. Oops. Gotthe .21 update

It shouldn't brick it if you do it right, but there's always a risk associated with rooting a device. Some B70 users have had luck with the following rootkit, but not all B70's will work on .21 with this method:

Did you tried to root with RazorClaw ? Maybe it works with B70 AND .21...
(It doesn't work anymore on B80 AND .21...)

Razorclaw don't work anymore on .21 version, regardless of your serial number.
If you have serial number before B70 (and some B70) then the methods (like this) using nvflash work.

[Q] Are there any viable root on a B80 with ICS yet?

I'm seeing a lot of old root methods or root methods for B70 or lower versions of the TF101. Are there any roots for the stock ICS firmware yet that is compatible for the B80?
ViperMOD can be use to root any tablet, regardless of the serial number.

Is this the official site? http://vipermod.tiamat-dev.com/vipermod-primer-tool-transformer-prime/
It says for the prime but I assume it works for the TF101?

That method was simple and effective. I'm surprised the mods removed it, because frankly, it looked like the cleanest way to root all current transformers on latest firmware.
Ok, thank you. I'm going to use that root method.
Edit: I ended up using viperMOD and it worked flawlessly.
