You can use every bootloader with every recovery.
You just need s-off to flash a custom recovery.

So... I have a S-on Desire S unlocked with HTCdev, rooted with superoneclick but I can not get the 4EXT recovery working. App is installed and all my partitions are ext4.
I get the red triangle when I go in to Recovery but I even haven't flashed anything. Just trying to make a backup first.
Is there anything else I have to do to get the recovery working ?

Try flash recovery in fastboot. 100% need to work then

Do you mean I have to install it in fastboot?

In start I was on clockworkmod but later I got cache probelms and I changed to 4ext but clockwork I did flash in fastboot.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium

OK. I uninstalled 4EXT and flashed the recovery image with adb / fastboot.
Now I have a recovery indeed. Thanks man...
I used this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1314629 more specific the quote from "Skanob " how to flash it.
Next step is to install the (touch) app again end see if that works to...

[Q] Installing ROM on HTC Desire S

Hi All,
I was wondering if there was a way to install a custom rom using clockwork mod with s-on hboot 2.00.0002 or something like that. Any help appreciated
Use this - (assuming you already have Clockwork Mod) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257731
Since you are hboot 2.00.002, you have to go through an additional step after that. Extract the boot.img from the ROM and do this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19071114&postcount=37
yes exactly CORRECT ...i did the same and running on CM7.1...
do i have to be s-off?
No, just unlocked via HTC dev
Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
i am already unlocked using htcdev so do i just go ahead with the above tutorials?
Help: Tried to backup rom using rom manager and got an icon of a phone with a triangle with an ! In it in red what do i do?
Did you flash CWM?? You need to flash a recovery using fastboot.
Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
i installed from rom manager and then went down to backup current rom and then got that icon after phone rebooted
Try flashing via fastboot. That icon is in stock htc recovery. Alternately, install 4ext recovery using 4ext recovery control app
Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
how do i backup first?
You need to get 4ext recovery to backup (i'm assuming that you mean nandroid backup, and that you are rooted. If not, then you must flash recovery via fastboot. )
Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
i'm not s-off and the app says i need it what do i do?
Did you unlock via htcdev.com? Does your hboot say unlocked? If yes, it should work fine.
Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
it does say unlocked but it is still s-on what do i do?
Ask madmaxx, the maker of 4ext. I think you are good to go, but you need to be sure.
Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
does it conflict with clockwork mod and do i have to uninstall it?
It automatically removes CWM, and takes it's place.
Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
so how do i s-off and if so does that mean downgrading?
Dude, THERE IS NO NEED TO S-OFF !!!! You can't do that without a downgrade, an UNLOCKED bootloader is the best you get. It's 99% equal to s-off. The only difference is you need to flash the boot.img of each ROM after flashing.

[Q] Bricked HTC Sensation 4G ?!

Today , i successfully rooted my HTC Sensation 4G, everything was working totally fine, but then I wanted to install and custom ROM , called Super Villain Shensation.
I followed everything like the instructions told me to, but it says that the installation was aborted. and when i want to reboot my phone, it just stays on the white HTC logo screen, and doesnt do anything. I am able to get to the bootloader, but when i try recovery the same thing happens. what do i do !?
First of all, it is not bricked. Moving forward you need to re-download the ROM to make sure it is not a corrupted download, then try to flash again.
In order it would be:
-re download ROM again (I would personally suggest a ginger bread ROM that doesn't require you to flash firmware and such)
-download super wipe
-put them both in your sd card, somewhere where you could find the files
-go into your recovery and flash the super wipe zip (found in the Android Revolution thread)
-flash ROM
-let it boot (it will take about 5 minutes)
-done

Sent From Space Using My ICS Flavored Sensation
Need tothrow the pg85.img zip on the root of you're sd card then boot into bootloader. Follow on screen instructions.
Sent From Space Using My ICS Flavored Sensation
Go to your bootloader like previous poster said and paste this file in the root of your sd card.
-Press the up volume rocker once you get the prompt to do it
If everything goes the way is suppose to go, you will be able to get into recovery again and flash whatever ROM you like.

What is you hboot if it's 1.18 or below and since you're r now s-on you need to run an ruu for ics that is closes to you stock rom. To upgrade your firmware to an ics compatible firmware. If it's 1.2x then you can htc-dev unlock and if you want s-off use jb then flash 4ext recovery even if your just htc-dev unlock. If your just htc-dev unlocked in 4ext enable smart flash. Now your good to go!

[Q] Need Help - Xe (ICS) bootloader says S-OFF but superuser says not rooted

Hi
I have a sensation xe. I rooted it before upgrading it to ICS (before is GB).
I upgraded it by flashing official ics rom due to I previously installed clockworkmod recovery which stop me from normal way of upgrade.
After upgrade everything's fine, but superuser and clockworkmod gone.
When I install superuser it says binary not found. but I checked my bootloader it says S-OFF.
What should I do?
Android - 4.0.3
Software number - 3.32.401.105
Hboot - 1.27.0000
Radio - 11.22.3504.07_M
Nevermind.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G with Beats Audio using xda premium
I don't know what is that, I think not.
I flashed it using RUU_PYRAMID_LE_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_3.32.401.105_R_Radio_11.69.3504.00U_11.22.3504.07_M_release_251961_signed.exe
If you find it locked you have to unlock first with htcdev.com but many user won't recommend it but at this time I think it the only way to unlock the bootloader, install the custom recovery(CWM) and install the superuser(root the phone).
You can get the details on this post.
But I already have it rooted before upgrade. I thought it will remain rooted? coz my bootloader shown S-OFF
OK, you have S-off. I guess you should be able to flash Revolutionary firmware from Boot loader, then use fast boot to flash the recovery, then flash root from the recovery you installed earlier and voila.
Sent from my Sensation using Tapatalk 2 Beta-6
Or, flash a firmware that contains recovery and then flash super user (just make sure its the correct firmware.) (I don't remember exactly where I seen this firmware, but I'm sure I have. Maybe here or somewhere else)

If you are S-Off you can root it again (because you flashed a RUU you lost root)
1) need to have a custom recovery (CWN or 4EXT). There is a nice tool to instal 4ext recovery HERE or download this PG58IMG. Just put it in your sd card and flash it from bootloader.
2) Then Download and install from custom recovery the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Done!

They don't recommend it because it doesn't unlock the bootloader completely. Read more and please don't recommend it, it's incorrect. His bootloader is already unlocked, hence he is s off. As already mentioned he needs to root and install Recovery.

Correct. By revolutionary you install CWM and then you can switch to 4ext. same as I did but in his case he doesn't need to use Revolutionary because already unlocked and s-Offed (and also because Revolutionary doesn't support Hboot 1.27). He needs just to install a custom recovery by a PG58IMG and superuser to get root again.

Hboot has nothing to do. The OP wants just root the phone again after upgrade to ICS.
Also, I think we are hitchhiking the thread with OT postings.
That said, this is my last post here.
For the OP: Follow instructions few posts above and good luck

My HTC One S still says S-On in the bootloader!

I bought it yesterday and when I tried to go with the rooting process, when I rebooted into the bootloader, it said ***UNLOCKED*** and above that it said ***TAMPERED***. I figured that it was already unlocked so I resumed with the process. I installed the CWM recovery and the SuperSU.
However, it still say "Ship S-On" in the bootloader. Am I free to flash ROMs or am I supposed to get it to S-Off somehow?
S-Off rooting has not been achieved yet. Unlocking bootloader and rooting with the current methods will allow for custom ROM installation.
hTc One S
One s doesnt have S-off yet,but you can flash rom s anyway .you will just have to fastboot the boot or use twrp recovery ,
I would stick to fastboot tho as twrp doesn't always flash the boot for me.

So I flash the ROM first. Then If i want to install a kernel, I install through fastboot? In that order?
For example: I flash This ROM first and then I reboot into fastboot in the bootloader to flash This Kernel?
Ya you can flash kernel first or last doesn't matter , just fastboot boot.IMG reboot to recovery and flash Rom

I am having trouble flashing a new custom recovery. i am currently using twrp 2.4.3.0 and having issues when installing new roms. I don't know how to fix this. Please help.
Is your bootloader unlocked or are you S-Off? Did you happen to relock it or anything?

No. If your bootloader is unlocked, then recovery should be flashable. Try to flash 4ext recovery using 4ext updater that is free from their site.
