Hey everyone, (and Merry Christmas, btw) : first time in this forum for me (I'd bet you're gonna get a huge influx of new users in here, because of Christmas and all.).
Anyway, I got my wife and daughter KFires as gifts, and, though I haven't rooted them yet, I did go ahead and install dropbox on each of them, so I could test out a few apps from my other devices:
One of the first ones I decided to try was Real Racing 2, from Electronic Arts, and it works perfectly, looks amazing...
Here's a screenshot I took of it running on my SGS2 variant:

(It's basically a Gran Turismo clone).
It's free on the Android Market:

(But, since it's free, it really wouldn't be considered warez to just post the apk here, so I will:
http://db.tt/9dClqvsF
(Relevant: there WILL be a 600+ MB data file that'll start after you install this: of course it's necessary to run the game.)
Enjoy.

There are quite a few games that work on Fire that look GORGEOUS but are not included in the Amazon App Store. In no particular order :
1) Earth and Legend. Absolutely beautiful game, looks like a mobile version of WoW. You need to have android market installed for it to work though. Best money I ever spent on a mobile game.
2) Cordy. Another graphically beautiful game. It's fun also AND FREE. Get this ASAP.
3) Sleepy Jack. Beautiful shooter game. Reminds me of that Space Harrier except more cutsey. It's not to pricey either, like 2 bucks.
4) GTAIII. Awesome retro game, runs fine on the Kindle Fire. Chanfire HD recommended for this.
Unconfirmed and untested by me, but I've read on the 'Net that the "HD" games for "Tegra" devices actually run fine on the Kindle Fire if you use Chainfire 3D and the right plugins.
great! thank alot
Anomaly HD is another title with gorgeous graphics that works on the fire with no plugin required
Need help with Real Racing 2
I need help to purchase the Full Version of this Game.
When i try to use the ingame link i´ve got a message that the Android Payment Methode must be used or something like that.

Of course you can, just back up the apk file and transfer it to your KF. Install like normal.

I just installed real racing. I can play it but the button labels doesn't seem to be in the right place. It is somewhat out of place. Anyone having this issues?
I'm running my KF with CM7.
Real Racing2 is pretty sweet. I ended up buying it cause I liked it so much.
Just finished whole career mode. Now playing Crash Bash via FPse. Very Smooth!
Damn!
The KFire is really a gaming tablet.
Real Racing works smooth! WOOT!
I really do love the way Real Racing plays, but I think the track graphics are 'fuzzy' (or over-aliased). I think the Kindle Fire can do better if they up the sharpness a bit.
Randy
Yeah, working very smooth, actuallly i didn't expect to see my KF running that gorgeous games like Real Racing 2...

Has anyone else had an issue with the required download, Says download in progress but stays on 0%...
I am on the pre alpha ICS rom.
Not sure what the problem was in ICS rom, but I was able to get it to download the required data on CM7... Game plays great.
I'm on the same page running CM9! Its stuck at 0%
Hey guys, yeah something is up with that. But up the DPI to 240, it'll make your Kindle Fire temporarily a phone lol, but then you can download the game, once it downloads it and runs the game, change your DPI back to 160 so your tablet becomes a tablet again.
I don't know why, but it just can't do the tablet version right now, the phone graphics aren't that bad but I never played the tablet version on the Kindle Fire so maybe they are 10 times better, I mean it's decent enough for me, I think it's still pretty amazing.
kay where is the downloads file? i want to un install it
any way 2 buy full version?
Thanks for posting how to get real racing on my fire. Ready to buy but in-game Buy link has connection error. Any way to buy on my stock Kindle fire?

3D game wise, I've got to agree with most of the above mentions. I grabbed most of EA's games while there were on sale for 99 cents over the holiday. NFS rocks and is most impressive. Haven't done much with the Sims yet though. Rocket Bunnies is indeed an awesome game, though it doesn't really do much with the 3D.
Dungeon Defenders looks incredible, but I hear that it's a major battery killer.
Dungeon Defenders is fun i love it, but you really need to set designated time to play it and finish all the waves, it isnt something you can just pick up for a few mins.
NFS is fun but its annoying because they havent fixed the screen going to sleep yet.
Need for Speed Shift
not working for me ._.
i recommend dungeon defenders though :'D

The 9mm on the market is not optimised for the play. Its just that because it was a play exclusive for a time, the gameloft devs got lazy and didnt remove play controls from the generic android version.

A better way of working that would've been that its not common that a Xperia PLAY optimized gameloft game gets on the market. That's more than likely what Log was gettin at because the majority of Xperia PLAY optimized gameloft games are only accessible from the wapshop.

But what about the people who'd rather legitimately own the game? Does that make them stupid? I, for one, certainly would rather wait for a legit wapshop release than play it like this.

I am sorry about that, i didnt mean taht anybody here is stupid at all but i didt like that they all said that it isnt optimized, without having tested it at all. Sorry if i hurt somebodys feeling. What i can say, the game is just awesome. Grafics is fantastic, no lag, controlls are a bit buggy but i think an update will make them better, maybe.
Me too, it sucks. They fell out with Google over market fees and such, wapshop means they get 100%.
Why don't they just release a gameloft app that has in-app billing and you can buy games in it?
Its better than their wapshop which means that people can just redistribute the apk they downloaded.
EDIT: Are the control's as bad as modern combat 2?

I pretty much agree that the game is amazing too. The only thing that pisses me off is that, while the game itself can be reduced to only take 320KB off your phone storage, there's an obligatory 8.80MB of consumption that's marked as data so that it can't be moved to the SD card no matter what. I HATE it when they do that.

I am very glad to say NO
...just as a forenote, the *bad* MC2 controls were based off those ridiculous new versions of the game (1.0.4, 1.0.5, 1.0.6) where they put this ****ty simulated analog in that makes the game nigh unplayable. If you got what I like to call the *prime* version (which is oddly numbered v3.3.9) before they started ****in' everything up... then MC2 is actually playable.
MC3 is much closer to controlling like the *prime* version of MC2... or like IE-core said, Rainbow Six - which means the controls are great. Only thing I'd recommend is toning down the sensitivity a tad bit.
Gimme 40min and I'll have a video up.

Heh, I wouldn't be surprised to find that they didn't test it at all.
Anyway, here's the gameplay video (also showing off how it controls):
One thing I'm really glad about is that they finally made the d-pad control auxiliary functions instead of just making it an alternative method of moving the character around. That'll be HUGE help when playing online.
EDIT: And since it was requested elsewhere, might as well post MY IMPRESSIONS here too.
Graphics are amazing. Controls are crap tho
Dead Space and Minecraft had the best controls.

Tiger Arcade is really a scaled down version of Final Burn, so "only" supports Capcom, Neo Geo, Cave and Toaplan rom sets.
Mame Reloaded supports the full 139 rom set and plays the Tiger Arcade roms just as fast. The catch is for the full set, newer games play slow, since the cpu of even the Tegra 3 chokes with games like Dead or Alive or Soul Caliber. I have tested those roms and they play slow on Tegra 2 and a little better on Tegra 3 (still not playable).
Simple rule, you currently need at least a laptop grade CPU to play any 3D games at playable rates. Most other games (about 90%) play GREAT!
Even a P8400 or the slowest i3 can play Dead or Alive and Soul Calieber at full FPS. Current tablet chipsets can not.
Added: Not sure how fast Mame Reloaded would be on slower chipsets, but tested fine and just as fast as Tiger Mame with Snapdragon 1.5ghz single core (View), OMAP 1.2ghz dual (Razr) and Tegra 2 & 3.
I do know that Tiger Mame and the older Mame4Droid 34 (Mame4all) played great on the Incredible.

It played real slow on the Razr, View and Thrive. All 3D games play slow, but not a surprise considering most lapstop chipsets a few years ago played them slow too.

I don't know what games you tried but I have more than a hundred 0.139 roms on my samsung galaxy tab 10.1 right now and they run really smooth with Mame4droid.
Just look at all the options offered by Mame4droid, you'll see Tiger Arcade really pales in comparison to it.
Same issue here.
I tried MAME4ALL, Tiger Arcade and MAME4droid.
- MAME4ALL is okay, runs well but compatibility with recent games is limited.
- MAME4droid seems to be too greedy with the Play's resources and games are generally too slow or laggy (even the old ones).
- Tiger Arcade is overall the best compromise though it lacks the ability to remove the auto framerate, which is annoying.
I'm surprise with all the positive reviews for MAME4droid on the Play. It seems to me that the xperia play is not powerful enough to run smoothly this emulator. Again, MAME4all is ok, but I had no luck with MAME4droid so far.
Do you confirm?
Anyone succeded in runing smoothly Mame4droid with an xperia Play?
I use Tiger Mame and it works incredibly well. I mostly play KOF and old shmups which sadly lose a bit of appeal when played in stretch mode (without it my eyes burn from trying to focus on something so small). With sound on games run a bit choppy on my stock r800i but with sound off everything runs perfectly and since I mostly play in the break room at work where I don't want to bother people it works out alright.
Quick question which I'm hoping is allowed but apologize if it isn't: Roms have a ton of versions, bootleg 1, 2, etc. What are the differences between these roms in most cases?
@croakerbc, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is considerably faster than the Xperia Play (which, given the forum, is the device being discussed) so obviously your results will differ from ours. From what I've seen on youtube alone I wouldn't recommend Mame4Droid Reloaded on the Play.

It's finally here! It took almost a year but the best game of all time it's finally available on Android! Those of you who already have CT on your emulators are probably wondering why you should get this. Well, THIS IS NOT THE SNES VERSION it has all the extra dungeons and re-hauled menu from the DS version.
For those who haven't played it yet and are on the fence due to the price: this is not excitement speaking, this IS the best game of all time. So do yourself a favor and play it. $10 for over 15 hours of gametime plus great replayability is a good deal in my books.

Probably you are right, the price wouldn't go down for a little (long?) time, but probably I would buy it because I've liked dragon Quest and I haven't played chrono trigger only because it isn't in italian (yep, I probably can play the game in English, but in italian it is easier for me) and the ios/android version is the only one officially translated
Is this version better than emulating the original Chrono Trigger from PS1 via FPSE?

The original Chrono Trigger is on SNES not PS1! If it is not xperia play optimalised it is not worth buy. Better - buy CT on PS1 and play it using fpse or epsxe. For me (and for many People of the world) is the best jrpg of all time.

Ditto.
It would be worth the £10 if it was optimized for the play, the IOS version was slated so i'm not sure how good this one is going to be. Just emulate the SNES rom
I'd probably try it(at least it came out) but unless buttons are fixed or I get the custom button mapper working(no root) I'll probably stick to the ps1 port via psxperia. I've been reading reviews and apparently, the game doesn't fully download to full game to your phone and requires updates now and then; I guess that is to deter illegal downloading? Also if I do decided to get my phone rooted in the future, does it allow rooted phones to play or has that been blocked too as that seem to be the trend?
After playing it for 2 hours I can confirm that it works on rooted phones. Touchscreen controls are easy to get used to, not a big deal. However, the game does download files from time to time and therefore requires a constant connection to wifi or 3g. ****ty move from Square Enix but I'm not surprised.
If you are passing this one to play the emulated PS1 version, at least do it right and play the SNES one instead. The loading times for battles and menus are atrocious on the PS1 version.

Not to mention you save 500mb on sd just for slightly better music. Snes = 5mb, PSX = approx 500MB
Always thought snes was one of the best choices for emulating on Xperia play as there is no fiddling buttons around (e.g. L2,R2) it's a perfect match to our pad. Also check out SuperGNES has a great UI with cover art.

Well, okay okay, SNesoid it is! The PS1 version did not got any advantages besides the music? I played the Nintendo DS version and there were animated cutscenes in manga style...

On ps1 version there are cutscenes in anime style. But nothing special. Music is same as on snes. DS version has additional quest (as I remember).

Just dropped by to say that I finally beat my replay of this wonderful game. For those who decided to emulate you definitely missed out. The new dungeons are a very nice addition, didn't get the new ending though. Worth every damn penny.
Eh, without the XP gamepad being usable, it sounds like I'm better off sticking with my existing copy of the DS version .
Curious, has anyone tried to run the game without an active connection to either wifi or a cellular network? I'm also not a fan of apps that regularly download in the background, especially if there's the potential for it to need to do this with large files.

I remember the game downloading stuff only at 3 points: when you enter the map on 600 AD for the first time, somewhere in 2300 AD, and after entering the bridge for the 1st time in 600 AD. After that I would just start the game, hit the home button, turn off wifi/data, and keep playing without a problem. I cleared it that way without an issue.
Well, I do have a very great steam collection but I dont have the proper pc hardware to stream them to the shield. (Im sure I could through using some app like splashtop gamepad thd) the price, not sure if the shield is really worth the 349$ price tag but then again, ive bought an ipod touch 4g with 32gb for 299.99 which had terribly outdated hardware at release so I dont really have ground there. Im big with emulators and the gamepad makes this phenominal for emulators. If this was rooted and cwm was flashed on, you could possible gain access to the OUYA appstore adding a whole new library of games. Theres many android games I enjoy playing on my nexus 7 such as GTA 3/vice city and shadowgun thd which would be much greater with a gamepad. Is it worth the 349.99 price tag given my position? Pretty much the only down side would be not having pc game access (not natively anyways)

well for me the steam streaming is a big part of why i want one. but i also want one for some other reasons.. such as the amazing amount of power packed into a tegra 4, the fact that i don't already have a tablet, and the fact that nvidia rarely disappoints. (and its just too cool of a device to pass up).
my main concern is that i hope nvidia gets alot of android devs onboard to program there games to the nvidia controller. games such as Ravensword, and asphalt.
don't know if this helps any but just my two cents.
If the android games not optimize for nvidia shield, then you can use the game mapping tool like gamekeyboard from google play store to map the game with the shield controller. Hope this help.

Quite a few android games do support gamepads (have a feeling asphalt might, the GTA games definitely do as do dead trigger and shadow gun) and should work with the shield already.
I'm quite interested in loading a shield up with emulators. Be interesting to see how well dolphin for android works on the tegra 4.

asphalt im almost certain won't have support (not right away anyways). no other gameloft games have gamepad functionality either unless you count support for gameloft's own gamepad. I'm also not sure I need it as I already have a nexus 7 tablet which is suprisingly easy to slip into a pocket. I am a gamer though so I feel the need to be on the cutting edge and even with the 1.7ghz overclock my nexus 7 still feels quite stressed on certain games. Dolphin will definitly be great but i feel it wont flourish on nvidia shield as i believe tegra 4 lacks open gls 3.0 which is something snapdragon has.
I think asphalt already has controller support see in the picture if I'm not mistaken this is built in controller support.

Thats not controller support. Thats tilt control. Completely unrelated.
Although according to google it does support a gamepad

For those that have been digging for a video showcasing the android aspect of the shield.

Here's a nice offer: Tell me the full name for Asphalt as listed in the Play Store, and I'll load it up, tell you how it is.
Also, I'll try loading the Dolphin emulator. I've played a little with emulators on the device, but didn't have much luck with an emulator that would play the one PSOne game I actually had the ISO for (Thrill Kill).
I think it is just asphalt 7 or something like that.
the dolphin team i believe are using super Mario sunshine as a test ISO. However so far no devices have been able to emulate at more than 1/3 speed.
As wrc1010 has posted above, the application game keyboard allows for users to map function for hardware keys.

Not much luck with Asphalt 7, since it crashes on the infamous "Checking License" loop. Trying some hacks to get around it, but it takes a while, plus I actually have *work* to do.

No, bugfixes for Shield.
And sadly, in regards to Dolphin emulator, it doesn't like Super Mario Sunshine at all. It doesn't even load it. I grabbed the only one on the Google Play Store I could find, so it's also possible that I'm not using one that actually *works* with the game. So if others have links to something better (or an APK), be glad to keep trying.
Asphalt 7 does *not* support controller natively.

Did you try out the game keyboard app? I think it allows you to map onscreen commands/gestures to physical input.

No, I just did a test to see if native support was there without having to root or anything else.
I see, if you had an interest in adding gamepad support to games I highly suggest it

I think YES
I think, you should by a Shield. The Tegra 4 is oneof the fastest ARM-CPUs, that are aviable on the Market. For a price of 300$ i definitly would buy it.
