Restoring a backup is a know bug with CWM 3. You can try bhundven's KJ6 voodoo kernel, also in the dev section. It comes with CWM 5 which will let you backup and restore properly. Note that any backup created with any other CWM version won't be restored.
do what fb said but if you have apps/texts/contacts that you want to save then restore just the data and then back all of that up through the phone and then flash the kernel

I haven't tried to restore with bhundven's kernel, but, it's still beta and i saw a post about it not CWM working 100% yet, so,
This is what i always do :
1. Make sure you have both your current GB kernel CWM flashable zip and Bali 3.3 Froyo kernel CWM flashable zip on your SDCard.
2. Go to CWM, install from zip, choose zip, choose bali kernel.
3. Once kernel flashed, go to advanced, reboot recovery
(if you accidently reboot system you won't get pass bootloaders cause Bali's a froyo kernel, don't worry go to CWM through volume down+power+plug in)
4. Once back in CWM, perform backup.
5. Reboot recovery.
6. Flash your GB kernel and reboot system.
To restore do the same steps.
It wotks great all the time.
Hope i helped.

I have rooted the SNS using Clockworks recovery and then flashed it using the CM7 RC 4 mod. Now i am trying to restore the nandroid backup taken before the flashing. It fails saying the /cache partition not mounted.
Please help me how to revert this to the original android 2.3.3 GRI54.
If you have not tried this recovery, you may want to give it a go. Also try the fix permisions option.

I can't restore my CWM backups. I get an error saying unable to mount system.
I'm not using ROM Manager and I even tried reinstalling the same ROM that I made the backup from and then restoring the backup, but it still doesn't work. I'm using Octane 2.x with DrHonk's KJ1 Kernel and my CWM version is 3.0.2.8x
I've seen several posts on this issue, but haven't seen a clear answer. Some people say it doesn't work and others have said it does. If anyone can provide some help, I'd appreciate it. I like to try out different ROMS and with other phones such as the Vibrant (yes I know this phone is different) I have always made a backup with CWM and if I didn't like the ROM I could go right back to my previous one with very little work. I know I can use Titanium and I do that, but you can't restore everything so I end up having to redo a lot of stuff.
If anyone can provide some help with this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
From what I understand, you'll get that error when you restore a GB backup. Froyo works fine.
As a work around, you can boot into CWM, flash Dr Honks Bali kernel, then goto advanced>reboot recovery. When CWM boots again, you can restore your backup.
Another work around that I've seen mentioned is to boot into CWM, reflash the ROM of the backup you want to restore. Once the ROM flashes, goto backup/restore>advanced restore and backup the data only. That way you get the system partition from flashing the ROM, and your old data partition from your backup.
I haven't tried either of these methods. Guess I probably should have disclosed that first, but this is what I have gathered by reading some of these threads.

This is mostly correct. Just left one thing out. Make sure after you flash Bali and restore your nandroid that you also reflash cwm/voodoo kernel.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'll try to doing an advanced restore of the data the next time since that sounds like the least painful method. If that doesn't work I'll try the bali kernel.
Please keep in mind that you CANNOT perform an advanced data restore from Froyo to GB. It will cause issues, such as incoming calls going directly to voice mail.
If you are moving from Froyo to GB, be sure to create a backup of your apps and data using Titanium Backup. Restore everything once you're on GB and it'll work fine.

I followed the first suggestion, flashing Dr Honks Bali 3.3 Kernel and it worked great. Just make sure you re-flash your old kernel before you reboot and you'll be fine. Thanks for this.
I did a nand backup before flashing official KJ6. I was on kj aosp.
Backup proccess went fine, then I tried official kj6 but didn't see much improvement so I flashed drhonk kj1 kernel for recovery, and tried to go back using my backup.
however, I got an error message:
restoring system...
Code:
E:format_volume failed to unmount "/system"
Error while formatting /system!
any ideas?
GB seems to have an issue with unmounting the system. I have never been able to do a complete restore from a nandroid backup while running GB.
However, you can do an advanced restore, and then restore your data only - that seems to work fine. So you flash the GB rom of your choice (be sure to have a modded kernel with cwm), then advance restore your data in cwm, and you should be good to go.
Its possible, just a few extra steps.
First you need to flash Bali kernel.
Second, reboot recovery
Next, restore your nandroid.
Finally, flash back
kj1 voodoo/cwm kernel

This process will work. Just make sure you have everything on your SD card before proceeding through cwm

Well, this morning after writing this post I figured I could just reflash the ROM i had and then just restore /data. I did that, however for some reason I'm missing now the TwLauncher, only GB launcher is present. It's not big deal, I kinda like it. I think it's because I flashed the official KJ6 AOSP style rom (from airfluip) instead of the one I had, which was leak kj6 aosp style, so maybe the official one doesn't include TWL, who knows. Anyway, all my apps and data is there, so it's all good now.
Thanks to both of you! **clicks thanks button**
i got kinda lost
When ever I try to format my system through CWM it keep getting an error. What I am doing wrong? I also tried to restore my phone but I still get the same error.

Just a heads up there is a Q&A section for Questions.
Did you unmount system before trying to format - therefore showing as " - mount /system" ?
Yes but I keep getting a similar error which states "error, cannot unmount /system

What ROM and kernel are you running? Can you boot into your ROM?
Currently I'm using Valhalla which I installed using Dr. Honks kernel. I can boot into my ROM but I can't restore backups

If you made your backups using Dr. Honk's kernel you won't be able to restore those backups with the kernel that is in VB. You could try flashing Honk's KJ1 kernel with SGS Kernel Flasher (easiest way) and try restoring it that way... as an idea.
Either way - I think you should reflash a kernel and see if it helps the unmount issue.
Fix permissions maybe? Don't know if it will work, but sure worth a try.
That is a GB issue that I believe is fixed in bhundven's Subtly Modified Stock kernel that has CWM 5. I think CWM 5 is the key but I could be wrong.

VB has bhundven's kernel in it already.
Damn - just noticed he said Valhalla not VB. I agree with Stephen. Flash bhundven's kernel.

Either switch to one of the latest kernels including CWM 5 and make a new backup or if you must restore this backup -

My recovery wont restore any backups I make. This may be an easy fix and I'm sure I'm asking a stupid question but I can't seem to get it to restore a back up. I get an error when it trys to. I'm on CWM-based Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v5.0.2.7.
what error do you get?

Let me guess... Cant mount system in the restore feature. I use titanium back and just use flashable roms if i need to restore... Dont know any other way around it. Maybe someone else does.

5.0.2.7 shouldn't have the issue with being unable to mount /system.
What error or message do you get when you try to restore?
I'm getting the mount/system error. I thought flashing the new cwm recovery and kernel would have gotten rid of that problem. It never did. I still get the same error.
And your trying to restore back ups made with CWM 5. Not CWM 3 right.
if the backup was made with cwm 3.x it won't restore with cwm 5.x and vice versa.
Also, GB roms had issues restoring backups made with cwm 3.x - you had to flash a clean rom, and then do an advanced restore, and restore data only.
